Halloween costumes: The Afflecks, Liv Tyler, David Arquette & more

Did you guys have a nice Halloween? It’s probably my favorite holiday. Last night it dawned on me that it’s also the only night you can drop by all your friends’ houses unannounced and have them be happy to see you. We had a lot of fun.

Every Halloween I do a “skeleton face.” I know it’s a bit lame, but I look up tutorials on YouTube and I try to make it somewhat scary with shading and easy to find makeup. (Black eyeshadow, liquid eyeliner, white cream makeup, black cream makeup.) I’ve been doing that for years. As a mom, it’s a quick and easy costume. However a lot of parents don’t dress up. I know they’re busy, I don’t blame them, but I wish more people would do something. Halloween is an awesome holiday! You get to dress weird, you get free candy, and you can visit everyone you know.

So that’s why I won’t exactly shade Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner for not wearing costumes for Halloween, but I consider it a massive missed opportunity for them. They’re rich, they could go all out in ways I can’t imagine. Plus they met doing a damn superhero movie and Ben is about to play Batman! The dude could have earned a TON of publicity if he would have worn his old Daredevil costume (Garner could have been Electra too!) or if he would have worn a Batman getup. It would have been a big nod and wink to the people who think he’s not qualified for the part. *Raises hand* Instead, they got two of their kids commercial costumes (I do that too, no judgment) and they didn’t even bother to pick up something for themselves. Maybe they dress up so much for their jobs that they’re not into it for Halloween, but they’re still party poopers.

Also, I think they’re kind of peeved that the paps came along. Usually they’re game but not last night.

Violet’s mummy costume is awesome. I get the impression she did a lot of it herself.

I’m going to cover a few other people while I have you here. Can you guess who’s dressed as Bozo the Clown? I’ll tell you after the image.

It’s David Arquette! That’s some artistry right there.

Liv Tyler is my kind of mom. Is she Magenta? Awesome, love her.

I love to see what Alyson Hannigan wears for Halloween every year. She goes all out on theme costumes with her husband, Alexis Desinof, and their daughters, Satyana, 4, and Keeva, 1. This year they were leprechauns, with their oldest daughter playing a rainbow and their littlest the gold. How adorable!

Kelly Osbourne wins Halloween in this awesome Carrie costume. She was seen outside David Arquette’s Halloween party at Bootsy Bellows.

I’m going to end with English actor Stephen Merchant, who also knows how to do Halloween. He had an alien coming out of his chest. He looks so sexy to me like this. I have a problem.

Oh come now, Kelly Osbourne does not win. Carrie is one of the easiest costumes to do, just grab a prom dress and splash on some fake blood. Stephen Merchant looks amazing, he should win…mind you, I tend to love Alien costumes in general.

  2. T.Fanty says:

*side eye for the Stephen Merchant comment*

I would love to dress up for halloween, but trick-or-treating happens immediately after work, and I have yet to pluck up the courage to teach in a costume.

    • j.eyre says:

Clearly you need an intervention; Mr. Rochester teaches in a costume. Next year I am showing up at your door at 5am and forcing you into costume and makeup Heidi Klum style. The Fantlings will thank me.

(hint – you are going as DDL as a slutty nurse. Of course, it’s DDL so I will have to assign the nurse a specialty)

  3. bettyrose says:

Liv Tyler is dressed as me first thing in the morning. She totally wins!

  4. missmerry says:

I know Merchant has a new show coming out in the US called “hello ladies i believe’. he’s pretty goofy, but I can see why you think he’s handsome in the picture you posted. her looks much better with a little scruff

  5. Mandy says:

I’ve always wanted to dress like Carrie for Halloween!! I am SO doing that next year.

  6. blue marie says:

You are not the only one with a problem Celebitchy, Stephen Merchant is the crush I like to keep secret. I shall go change my name now..

    Stephen Merchant wins. 😀
Halloween gets more popular every year in Australia. I actually quite like it. It happened to fall on late night shopping at the centre i work at (trading closes at 9pm every Thursday). The centre set up a small Halloween carnival for kids and they all got to dress up. It was really cute. My co-worker and I also got some lollies for the kids in our store.

    • Spooks says:

It’s getting more popular here in Croatia, and I don’t don’t like it. It’s not our holiday, it’s imported. We celebrate All Saints Day, and it does seem a little bit disrespectful. We have the dressing up and trick or treating in February during carnival.
And why are all the parents even or going? When I was a kid we went alone, and we we’re around 8 or 9. But then again, we do trick or treating in the morning.

And what do you mean it’s the only time you can pop at your friend’s house unannounced and they’re happy to see you? You can always do that round here. It’s totally normal.

  8. Esmom says:

Agree about Ben and Jennifer, it would have been cool to see them in costume. Their business casual garb makes them look kinda stuffy. Even some Halloween themed t-shirts would have lightened the mood around them.

I love when parents/adults get into the Halloween spirit and dress up. Although yesterday a local radio dj was ranting about how childish he thought it was when he saw adults in costume. I wanted to tell him he was missing the point, it’s one of the very few times that adults can kick back and channel their inner child, nothing wrong with that at all.

    • booboobird says:

it’s true. but one thing i can’t stand when the adult just slaps on that stupid rubber face mask (the best is not to bother at all not show some half assed attempt). the uglier, the better (in their opinion, of course). imagine a small child walking around in the dark and that kind of monstrousity walks by. no wonder a clown in one of the things that kids are afraid of. bozo mask gives me the creeps.

  9. Lauren says:

Stephan Merchantttttt.. I’m gonna go watch An Idiot Abroad! 😀

  10. Jayna says:

Well, on Ellen she said they went all out last year. She didn’t want to, saying aren’t we old enough to stop now, but the girls talked dad into it. She said he can’t deny them anything. So She was Glenda the Good Witch and Ben was the Tin Man. They went to another neighborhood with the girls and their little boy to trick or treat, which were characters from the movie also. They got there and none of the parents were in costume, and there she was in a big pink ballgown and Ben was in this big, bulky Tin Man costume. After a while he ditched his because he could lift it off of himself, and she suffered through trick and treating with the scratchy outfit on. She showed a photo of Ben to embarrass him. So that’s why they didn’t do it this year, no parent does in the neighborhood.

    • Ellen says:

Yeah, I think whether parents dress up is very neighborhood-specific. Ours is about 50-50, which means it’s totally parent choice. In the next nearest development, almost none of the parents wear costumes on Halloween.

    • Briana says:

My and my husbands dressed up to take our son trick a treating and when the other parents didn’t, I just don’t get why they care so much of what the other parents were doing .

Jen and Ben come off as people who cares a lot about their image even about something silly like dressing up to take their kids trick a treating .

      • Luna says:

        Last year he had Argo

      • KC says:

It’s not that they care about what the other parents are doing. It’s that Jennifer prefers not to dress up and went along with it previous years because her kid wanted her to (ex. Big Dog, Little Dog) or because the kids had talked their dad into it. So this year she finally got her way and they didn’t dress up.

  11. Nicolette says:

Love Violet’s mummy costume, she wins in my book. 🙂

  12. Ellen says:

I don’t know about parents dressing up. I think it’s totally cool when they do it, and I love the family themed costumes, but I am so crazy in the run-up to Halloween with kid costume prep and our annual neighborhood party that the very last thing I need is to come up with a costume for myself, too.

Plus, I like that the kids get all the attention for THEIR costumes. I am NOT throwing shade on the parents who dress up, too. I’m just saying, I personally like the anonymity of the holiday, and the way it’s all about the kids.

    • Evie says:

Ditto. If I were going to a Halloween party, I’d get together the best costume I could but I leave Halloween day trick-or-treating costumes for my kids.

Part of me thinks these two can’t win for losing. Had they dressed up someone would have called them out for it, especially since the paps were there.

      • KC says:

They can’t (win for losing). See: the outrage around here at Ben “campaigning” for an Oscar, which made him a low down dirty scumbag; and now the outrage at Fassbender for refusing to campaign, which makes HIM an unprofessional, ungrateful snob.

There is zero logic to be found at CB where either of these guys are concerned.

    • mom2two says:

Same here. My husband and I did not dress up. It is really busy from the time the kids get home from school, getting their costumes ready, having dinner and being done in time for trick or treating-that there is really is not much time for us to dress up. I do wear my Great Pumpkin Halloween shirt that I wear every year.
We did joke as going as Heisenberg and I would go as Marie (straighten the hair and wear all purple) but we elected not to.
Honestly, I like seeing the kids dressed up and I don’t really care about the adult costumes.

  13. judyjudy says:

I can’t shade Ben and Jen. The mister and I didn’t dress up this year. Things have been crazy and it just didn’t happen. Our kidlets look cute though.

  14. Elisabeth says:

jen and ben seem so boring. not just because they didn’t dress up but all year round.

    • MrsBPitt says:

They are boring for taking their kids trick or treating??? Someone said it up-post…Ben and Jen can’t win for losing!

  15. Emily C. says:

    GAH A CLOWN.

    Er, sorry, I just… I don’t like clowns. *shudder*

  16. Marianne says:

As for the “parents not dressing up” thing. I feel at least, you could dress up in Halloween colours. Put on some orange and black. Maybe grab like a spider necklace from the Dollar Store or something. That way, you still look festive.

  17. HD says:

Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Desinof are so tacky. They’ve got to be the most pap-friendly working actors in Hollywood. Sure their kids are adorable, but why do they whore them out as if they were two-bit reality stars hustling for MTV to pick up their new series?

    • Jamie says:

I get what you mean but the most pap-friendly is a Ben and Jen. About 3 months a ago a bloge did a poll of the most photograph celebrity kids and Ben and Jen kids were #1.

    • GreenTurtle says:

Really? I hardly ever see pics of them except on Halloween.

  18. Ally8 says:

Did u know there’s a rumor that Liv Tyler and Benedict Cumberbatch went on a couple of dates in New York a while back?

  19. Apsutter says:

Kelly Osbourne wins Halloween? Ummmmm….h*ll no. NPH and his wonderful family win Halloween every year. They wore Alice in Wonderland costumes last week and just released new pics as a monster family and they looked amazing!!

  20. serena says:

I love Alyson Hannigan’s costumes for Halloween! So adorable!!
