Debbie Matenopoulos’s nasty divorce is all about money

As Celebitchy reported last year, Debbie Matenopoulos’s husband, Jay Faires, left her in a very public way. Debbie admitted that she found out on the internet that Jay had filed for divorce, which was a hokey story considering that most likely Debbie would have been formally served with divorce papers.

Now I’m starting to think that perhaps Jay Faires decided to leak the divorce filing before Debbie had a chance to be served. It seems like Faires and his lawyer can’t stop talking to the press about Debbie. The latest salvo is an aritcle in People magazine about how Debbie pays for nothing in the multi-million dollar home she kicked Jay out of. According to Jay’s people, he’s still paying the bills on everything, even though Debbie makes a six-figure salary.

Debbie Matenopoulos’s estranged husband is seeking spousal support from the E! host, saying she “pays for nothing” related to their multimillion-dollar Los Angeles home after the pair “continuously lived beyond our means,” court documents show.

Jay Faires, 45, an L.A. music executive who makes $37,500 per month before taxes, is demanding that Matenopoulos, 33, either help pay the mortgage, agree to refinance, or move out and sell the home, according to his filing.

“Notwithstanding the fact that [Matenopoulos] earns at least $225,000 annually, she had her lawyers send my lawyer the cable bill and her cell phone bill to pay,” Faires says. “If [she] wants to continue to live [in our home] and won’t agree to sell, she should be paying all expenses associated with her use and occupancy, i.e. the mortgages, property taxes, utilities, insurance, gardener, pool, alarm, etc.”

Faires, who filed for divorce on Nov. 12 after five years of marriage, admits that the couple have “continuously lived beyond our means during our marriage.”

He says he has moved out of the residence, and that Matenopoulos “has changed the locks and the alarm code so I can’t enter the house.” Faires says they owe approximately $1.5 million on the home, which carries a monthly payment of $11,671.

He adds that he’s had the property appraised recently at $4.3 million, but alleges Matenopoulos “won’t even consider selling [the home] unless we receive somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million.”

“[She] apparently believes that at some point in time [the home’s] value will increase by some $3.5 million,” Faires says. “She also apparently believes that I … pay all expenses … while she lives there and pays for nothing, and waits for a real estate miracle to happen.”

A hearing is set for Feb. 23. An attorney for Matenopoulos was not immediately available for comment.

[From People Magazine]

I side with no one in this case. Jay and his lawyers seem like sleaze-balls trying to damage Debbie’s reputation. Debbie seems like an airhead who doesn’t realize there’s a recession. I did find all of the money stuff really interesting though. I can’t believe E! pays Debbie that much – all she does is co-host (with two other people and a team of “guests”) one half-hour entertainment show and the occasional red-carpet thing. Over-paid! But she’ll probably need the money soon.

I do not enjoy any show this girl is on. Please go away.

  2. CC says:

I don’t believe for a second E! ONLY pays her $225,000. She’s not worth it, but it’s network television and they typically overpay people.

Barbara Walters is again congratulating herself on dumping Debbie.

  4. Ron says:

That’s on the low end for a host on a nationally boradcast show. Local news anchors in LA make anywhere from 1.5-4.5 million a year.

Who told these idiots that posing with their mouth hanging open was attractive?

  6. nag says:

I think it is great they have said they have lived beyond their means in the article.

It makes them a real couple in the real world instead of just us seeing them in an ureal life that some groups of people wished they could have.

  7. Alaina says:

I know it’s not the point of the story but what I can’t get past is the idea of Debbie making $225,000 working for E! Does she have other jobs we don’t know about? I like her as a host and everything, but wow! That’s a lot of money.

  8. vdantev says:

And the deep punctures she left in her husband from those f’ing rib bones sticking out.

  9. Tia says:

She is such an idiot. Please tell me the 15 minutes are over. I love how she judges peoples fashions and hair. Yet she is often so tacky it is funny.. WOW a wierdo !!!!!

I don’t know the law in California, but where I live, the grounds for divorce is a year-long separation, and during that time if one spouse is living in the matrimonial home they BOTH split the bills (which is likely why bills get sent to the husband), because they will be splitting the equity in the house when it is sold, or one spouse buys out the other.
In this economy, I imagine she wants to wait on on selling the house so that any debts will be offset by more equity
The guy must know that, if he still wants part of the equity, he has to pay part of the bills…
I would be surprised, however, if she is paying nothing. Likely they are each expected to pay half. He is just being increadibly petty, especially considering his income can more than handle the expense until they sell.

Let’s be fair, when the bulk of your photo experience happens in Blender Magazine– you probably only have two faces: “open mouth”, and then “biting lip”.

I think she should move out if he is paying the bills

Watching/listening to this woman speak makes me want to punch someone. Preferably her.

  15. Kitty says:

    A) he filed for divorce, so the burden should be on him until financial matters are resolved.
B )when the divorce is resolved in court his payment of all this stuff will be taken into account.

  17. Vibius says:

I dont blame him at all. They are worth the same ammount of money so why should he have to pay for her to live in luxury?

  18. Maritza says:

I agree, she is an airhead. I can’t stand her! She is so phony and the way she stands with her arched back and her hands on her hips, please… it’s so annoying!

  19. NotBlonde says:

How the heck do you live “beyond your means” when you are making $37,000 a month before taxes?? Even if you take half of that away he’d still be making $18,500 a month…wtf? Talk about being an extremely irresponsible couple of spenders.

  20. ChristinaX says:

I’m apathetic about this woman either way, but my god, those facial expressions are so tacky.

It always looks like she’s posing for a porno or something.

  21. Lia says:

She is SO annoying that I have to turn off the volume when she’s on. She acts like she’s on speed or something all the time, and the silly poses she adopts are pitiful to watch. I think she imagines herself to be something so completely different than what she really is. What an embarassment.
