2014 Golden Globe nominations: who got snubbed & who made the cut?

wenn20584249

Ugh, I absolutely HATE the way the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did their nomination announcements today. They split up the announcements – first they did all the TV noms and the noms that very few people care about, then they were so exhausted from that process that they decided to take a 20 minute break before announcing the film noms. So, let’s get to it.

TV nominations – you can see the full list here, I’m only going to do some highlights from TV. First of all, YAY for Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany – she finally got a major nomination for Best Actress! I’m also pleased to see that Josh Charles’ work on The Good Wife is finally being recognized because OMG he is killing it this season. The HFPA seems to love Andy Samberg too – his new show (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) got several nominations. The HFPA also really liked The White Queen which… I saw a few episodes and it was not all that. It also kills me a little that Zooey Deschanel is still being recognized for New Girl but Mindy Kaling is not being recognized for The Mindy Project. Mindy > Zooey.

As for the film noms… here you go:

BEST PICTURE – DRAMA
“12 Years a Slave”
“Captain Phillips”
“Gravity”
“Philomena”
“Rush”

BEST ACTOR – DRAMA
Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave”
Idris Elba, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”
Tom Hanks, “Captain Phillips”
Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club”
Robert Redford, “All is Lost”

BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA
Cate Blanchett, “Blue Jasmine”
Sandra Bullock, “Gravity”
Judi Dench, “Philomena”
Emma Thompson, “Saving Mr. Banks”
Kate Winslet, “Labor Day”

BEST PICTURE – MUSICAL/COMEDY
“American Hustle”
“Her”
“Inside Llewyn Davis”
“Nebraska”
“The Wolf of Wall Street”

BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL/COMEDY
Christian Bale, “American Hustle”
Bruce Dern, “Nebraska”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Oscar Isaac, “Inside Llewyn Davis”
Joaquin Phoenix, “Her”

BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL/COMEDY
Amy Adams, “American Hustle”
Julie Delpy, “Before Midnight”
Greta Gerwig, “Frances Ha”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Enough Said”
Meryl Streep, “August: Osage County”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – MOTION PICTURE
Barkhad Abdi, “Captain Phillips”
Daniel Bruhl, “Rush”
Bradley Cooper, “American Hustle”
Michael Fassbender, “12 Years a Slave”
Jared Leto, “Dallas Buyers Club”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – MOTION PICTURE
Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine”
Jennifer Lawrence, “American Hustle”
Lupita Nyong’o, “12 Years a Slave”
Julia Roberts, “August: Osage County”
June Squibb, “Nebraska”

BEST DIRECTOR
Alfonso Cuaron, “Gravity”
Paul Greengrass, “Captain Phillips”
Steve McQueen, “12 Years a Slave”
Alexander Payne, “Nebraska”
David O. Russell, “American Hustle”

Surprises? American Hustle is well-represented, which is a change from the SAG nominations. I tend to think Hustle will be a bigger contender for the Oscars than the SAGs really reflected. It’s good to see Amy Adams get a nom! And it’s also great to see Oscar Isaac make it to the big time. I have no idea what Kate Winslet is doing on the Best Actress short list, and I really doubt that she’s a contender for an Oscar nomination. Still no Michael B. Jordan or Octavia Spencer for Fruitvale Station, which is just depressing because that film was amazing. Still, it’s good to see IDRIS on the Best Actor list, isn’t it? And I’m enjoying how The Butler didn’t get any nominations, not even for Oprah (is this a snub?). Also – Wolf of Wall Street is officially making its entrance into the Oscar season, it seems.

    Yay! So happy for TYAS.
As for oprah am happy its happening this way must she be nominated anytime she chooses to act? 🙂

    • ANDREA1 says:

Why are they snubbing michael B Jordan and Octavia Spencer 🙁

      • kw says:

I think fruitvale came out so early, so people are forgetting about. They do a re-release in theatres if they want to make it into awards season this year.

      • JojoAnn says:

Honestly? I think theres a ‘black folk’ quota in these nomination processes and Chewitel and Idris have filled it. Now, its obviously not official policy but you can bet your butt its part of the elimination criteria.

      • kw says:

        @jojo ann True.

      • Spooks says:

I’m really happy Barkhad Abdi got nominated. I hope he gets an Oscar nom too.

      • Esmom says:

@jojoann, I could believe that. The rundown of the other non “black folk” nominees struck me as depressingly predictable.

  2. Simmie says:

I’m really excited that Daniel Bruhl got a nomination. He was great in Rush and I’m pretty excited if this means he’ll be showing up places wearing a tux, but Rush is sort of a surprise for Best Picture. It was good but not Best Picture good.

    • Anna says:

I absolutely love to see them both there. Now I am actually keeping my fingers crossed for Hems in a tux on a red carpet!

      • Marty says:

@Anna- it’s a nice surprise right? I think Daniel was really fantastic in Rush. Although it probably would have recieved more noms if it wasn’t such a tight race this year. Just so many great movies that came out recently,

    • harpreet says:

I loved Rush, as a person who has never seen an F1 race, it was amazing.

I am happy it is nominated here, along with Bruhl who was fantastic as Lauda, I don’t think it will be nominated at the Oscars.

      • Simmie says:

Yeah, what impressed me most about the movie was how interesting it was, even for someone like me who has less than zero interest in racing.

I’ll be more surprised to see it get Oscar noms, as opposed to mild surprise that it cracks Best Picture here. I did really enjoy it, I just don’t think it was a standout film from everything I’ve seen this year.

  3. GeeMoney says:

I’m sooooo happy that Idris Elba got two nods this morning! YAY!

I’m also glad that 12 Years a Slave got lots of love today, too.

    • ANDREA1 says:

Yeah happy for Idris and also Twelve years a slave I hope it equally get some love from the academy too.

  4. Olivia J. says:

Yay, Tati! I’m glad to see her recognized after her Emmy snub. She’s doing some of the best work I’ve ever seen on TV.

  5. Yelly says:

Sigh, Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed and starred in Don Jon, a pretty good movie. Snub.

  6. SOA says:

Sons of Anarchy snubbed again!!! WTF is wrong with Hollywood???? SHAME!!!

    • Jenna says:

After the season six finale, Mr. Hunnam NEEDS some form of recognition.

    • Spooks says:

JUSTIFIED? Why is there no Justified?

    • sputnik says:

the most recent season of sons of anarchy has been appalling. it got horrible reviews and people stopped watching in droves. it’s not the fault of the actors, but it’s no surprise it’s been ignored.

      • SOA says:

That is just not true! Reviews have not been horrible and I know more people are tuning in year after year. The ratings are off the charts! These award shows just look stupid for ignoring this show for whatever political reasons they are doing it. The viewers know!

      • Marty says:

@Sputnik- I’m not sure where you’re getting your info from, but SOA’s ratings continue to grow every year. This last season finale was their most watched yet.

      • sputnik says:

i stand corrected on the numbers. i just saw the viewing figures. you’re absolutely right. the reviews however have been horrible. on respected tv critic blogs like time, hitfix, av club and huffpo the reviews have been very bad all season. the finale was especially derided.

the award shows have never really given any love to sons of anarchy, even when it was more of a critical success. i think it’s a bit too genre for them. same with things like walking dead and game of thrones.

  7. Anna says:

HOW ARE THERE NO NOMINATIONS FOR FRUITVALE STATION?!?!
    ARE THEY CRAZY?!

  8. Tiffany27 says:

I feel like Fruitvale Station would have done better had it come out later and not over the summer. The movie was amazing.

    • LadySlippers says:

Hopefully the Academy is seeing/hearing this and going back to revisit the movie.

The other sad issue might be that no one is stumping for it. 🙁

  9. Aiobhan says:

Most of these nominations are fantastic. I am so happy for Julie’s nom and All the Her nominations. I wish Adele and Lea had gotten a nomination. I guess they were not eligible.

But why is supporting actor and actress lumped together but best actor and actress are separated by genre?

  10. rep says:

Happy The Butler got nothing, it was boring. Captain Phillips and Fruitvale Station two wonderful movies, just gripping. Even though I knew what the ending was. Sometimes that can be a deal nreaker for me.

    • Nik says:

I don’t get why The Butler is getting so much hate on here. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the movie but I thought Whitaker and Oprah (yes, Oprah) gave great performances.

Many of you haven’t even seen American Hustle and Wolf of Walk Street…yet it’s getting support because what the critics say *eyeroll*

      • kady says:

The Butler was very corny. The acting, the storyline. It was heavy handed. And I thought the whole panther thing with the son was a huge part of the story, so to call it The Butler was a little misleading.

      • Dingo says:

I think it was pretty bad – yes the actors was okay. And actually Oprah was rather good – but the story was so so corny. And I don’t think it was Whitaker’s best acting – but I do think it was mostly because the story was to foreseeable.

  11. Jennyjenny says:

How the heck Is Brooklyn Nine Nine getting nominations ahead of The Miny Project?!? I watch both and Mindy is so much better! Also, I agree- the New Girl, especially Zooey, doesn’t deserve a thing. It is such a bore this season. Mindy 4 Eva!

    • JojoAnn says:

Mindy Project must be an acquired taste, nobody I know likes it. I used to be a major Mindy Kaling geek, now I just dont know.

    • hiddlesgirl85 says:

&jennyjenny: I agree with you that The Mindy Project is hilarious. It’s such a shame that it is not being recognized at all. Now, while I also enjoy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I can agree that The Mindy Project trumps it.

    • Sumodo1 says:

Brooklyn 99 is must-see. The comedy pacing is quick and laugh-out-loud funny. Andy Samberg is hilarious in it.

      • emmie_a says:

I agree. Brooklyn 99 is a must-see! I just discovered it a few weeks ago and have watched all the episodes quite a few times – I am hooked.

I absolutely move Mindy — but The Mindy Show is not all that great. It’s cute and there are a few good characters but it’s so scattered and it’s like they’re searching for the right angle but haven’t found it.

Off topic: I just discovered The Goldbergs and I’m hooked on that show too. I didn’t watch it at first bc the critics totally panned it but it’s a great show – good 80’s memories!

  12. truthSF says:

Which film has the most nominations?

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      12 years and american hustle

    • Bubbles says:

Sadly, we’ll have to endure another year of “oh so down to earth” Jennifer Lawrence. But, on the plus side, Amy Adams got nominated.

      • Barbara says:

Well, I am surely happy about that! She earned her nomination stfu.

Good to know we’ll have more “down to earthness” this year. Better than Oprah.

      • M. says:

        @Barbara: Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more!.

      • Bubbles says:

Did you just tell me to STFU? How very mature of you. No wonder you’re a huge JLaw fan.

      • T.C. says:

        @Bubbles,
See it as another year for you to bitch and moan about Jennifer Lawrence. If Lawrence gets an Oscar nomination and nothing for Adams you can do a Kanye style rant about Lawrence stealing Amy Adams nomination when they ain’t competing in the same category. LOL.

      • LAK says:

T.C. : it’s more than 10yrs and i’m still bitching about GOOP stealing Cate Blanchett’s oscar!!! Kanye Style.

        Bubbles: go right ahead…..

      • CC says:

        Better than “it came truuuueeeeee!”

      • moon says:

@Barbara how do you know she deserved it when you have yet to watch the movie? I don’t think it’s been released yet

      • MisJes says:

@moon, American Hustle has been released here in Australia, I saw it last night – and she really was phenomenal, completely stole every scene she was in. The film as a whole was fantastic, I recommend seeing it!

  13. Violeta says:

Idris and Chiwetel with 2 nods each, yes please! Barkhad and Lupita yes please!

Big BOO at the Fruitvale Station snub, but I hope it snatches all the ISA awards and other indies circuits then!

  14. Deb says:

Where are the noms for Sons of Anarchy??????

    • Tiffany27 says:

SOA never gets nominated which is too bad. Did you see the season finale?!?!?!?

    • Lindy79 says:

It never gets nominated for anything…Downton Abbey getting nominated is a joke, it’s pure scenery with little substance.

If there was such a category, SoA should be nominated for it’s brilliant use of music to frame a scene. Sutter gets it right every time, after every episode I’m online looking for the music, finale closer song was amazing, have not stopped listening to it.
Breaking Bad, given that it was it’s last season will pretty much win everything it’s nominated in.

      • Esmom says:

I don’t watch SoA but it’s funny to me to see BB and Downtown both nominated. I enjoy DA but it doesn’t even approach the same league as BB.

  15. Hannah says:

AAAAAH, Taylor Swift got nominated again! And Tina and Amy are hosting again! Please let that be golden!

  16. Mooncake says:

Yay for Breaking Bad & Brian Cranston!

  17. tifzlan says:

Fruitvale Station’s snub is really no surprise. Depressing and upsetting, but no surprise.

  18. ashley says:

Where the phuck is the nomination for sons of anarchy!!!! That show is amazing,i’m currently watching season 4 on netflix, charlie hunnam is so good. The mindy project is so funny, new girl is just meh now. It was good in season one, give mindy her nomination damn it!!

    • FingerBinger says:

Sons of Anarchy has been getting snubbed for awards since it’s been coming on. Charlie Hunnam does let the British accent slip now and then IMO. Also, Kevin Spacey is the only good thing on House of Cards, but the show is a little overrated.

  19. lenje says:

Woo hoo! I’m liking most of the nominations (movies and TV), although a bit sad that Veep only gets JLD this time. Congrats, HFPA!

  20. Han says:

Downton Abbey hasn’t been good since the 2nd season. Its soap with a good actors and good production value. But the story line is no different from any of the day time soaps really shocked that it gets more noms than mad men and house of cards in this award season.

  21. Lydia says:

Jennifer Lawrence snatching wigs again! I love it. Haven’t seen American Hustle but everything I’ve read says that she is spectacular and steals the film.

No Claire Danes? No Game of Thrones? Hahah. Oh, and Meryl Streep being nominated in the Comedy category is A JOKE. August: Osage County is not a comedy! They know she won’t win in Drama so they threw her in Comedy. Pathetic.

    • Bubbles says:

I loved JLaw. Then I liked her. Then she started to annoy me. Now I really dislike her. I also think her acting is overrated. She’s always JLaw, in every role I’ve seen her ( haven’t seen Winter’s Bone, though). I’m not happy I’ll have to endure another year of her “sooo relatable” stischk.

      • Athena says:

Wow, American Hustle cleaned up!. I’m seeing it on the 20th and I can’t wait, huge Jennifer Lawrence fan here, and love reading the fantastic reviews for Lawrence, (as usual) the rest of the cast and film.

Slightly off topic, but Jennifer Lawrence, Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock came in at #11 in the HR Most Female Entertainers List (under Box Office Queens!…WooHoo!!).

      • Barbara says:

She hasn’t done a thing to annoy except stay out of the spotlight except to promote her films, do the best she can in her roles, and be gracious to her cast and directors as is obvious considering how much they love her. THere is nothing for you to endure. You hate how much success she has and the fact that the world likes and appreciates someone you don’t. That’s fine. Don’t support her. But saying she is “too relatable” as if she trying to be when she is being herself is just bs.

She doesn’t put her personal relationships in your face, she doesn’t party, go clubbing, grab onto her stars to get attention. She earned her nominations based on her own merit. If all you see is JLAW in those varied roles, then thats your problem, because I can’t think of anything different then Tiffany, Ree, Rosalyn, Katniss, just to name a few.

      • Barbara says:

and obviously the SAG and NYFCC, and the HFPA DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU.

      • Nik says:

        @Barbara

Girl have a seat. You’re getting too passionate over someone you don’t know nor does she know you. It’s ridiculous how some of you kiss the ground Jennnifer walks on.

Unless you know her or you’re getting paid to stan out for her…it’s not that serious. Have a good one, hopefully you hear no anti-JLaw comments that might have you flip out again.

      • Han says:

@nik i actually think its the other way around. Its ridiculous how some people get so worked up because lawrence gets nominated. On movie sites i read the outrage is focused on oprah getting noms this season. I mean there is a pretty widespread consensus amongst critics and fellow actors and directors that lawrence is indeed very talented so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she gets nominated at this stage, considering those are the people voting, as opposed to the internet.

      • Nik says:

        @Han

Who is really getting worked up? I have yet to see/hear anyone going full ape shit about JLaw on something mean or unfair. From what I’ve seen the people that don’t like her stem from either being tired of her “everyday woman persona” or the fan/media worship.

I think she’s talented (though overrated) and likeable but I’m over the “no negative thing should be said about Jen or feel the wrath” mindset people have (see Barbara’s comments on this thread)

If you love her and think she can do no wrong…that’s fine and dandy. But the point is not eveyone does and those people should be allowed to express that too without having to deal with a “you must be a hater” comment.

      • Han says:

@Nik. Please don’t put words into my mouth. I never said i think she can do no wrong, nor that i love her especially, its just that every article that is made about awards i see these over the top reactions to her nominations in particular, as if she is especially undeserving of noms or the only person who has ever been nominated consecutive years. Also please differ between not liking her “everyday woman persona” and her acting work. I don’t like say Sean Penn or Josh brolins drunken abusive personas but i can still recognise their acting talent. This article is about acting awards so what you think of her persona or her fans/media worship shouldn’t matter. I mentioned Oprah because she is someone with the money and power to truly influence people if you want to go down that route, yet some of here act as if Jennifer controls the media, critics and voting panel. That to me is truly ridiculous.
For the record i root for Lupita as best supporting actress, its the best performance in that category. Though i should say that i (like i suspect many who opioniate on Lawrence in american hustle ihave yet to see that performance) i am just reading reviews and i can’t say i am surprised she is on the short list based on the reviews. I just find you guys a bit over dramatic in your reactions to her noms.

    • M. says:

@ Lydia: +1 Zillion!…Jennifer Lawrence has been garnering huge praise for her performance in American Hustle…can’t wait to see it. I remember ABSCAM, the mid to late 70’s and it all looks so spot on!. I even had a Farrah hairdo (well, I thought it looked Farrah-Like, LOL!).

      • Diana says:

I never pay much attention to what critics say and prefer my own opinion. The critics said she was good on Catching Fire and everyone was so praising, I went expecting something different from her performance on THG and got out sadly disappointed. She is only good when she’s acting crazy/piss but when she needs to emote, to show vulnerability, girl just doesn’t cut it. I haven’t seen AH so I’ll keep my opinion until I see it but if she needs to show some kind of emotion other than confrontation or crazyness in it, I don’t have much hope for it.

      • thinkaboutit says:

She was SO good, the whole Hustle cast was amazing. I didn’t “see” any of these very famous actors, just their brilliantly played characters. I plan to see this film about 7,000+ times. For the acting and Amy’s amazing wardrobe and gorgeous cleavage!

    • sputnik says:

are any of the films in the comedy/musical category actually a comedy or musical? their definitions are very strange.

      • Aiobhan says:

@sputnik I think if it is not a full on drama with a serious message like 12 Years etc. then they will consider it a comedy.

      • LadySlippers says:

Which is crazy as not super solemn doesn’t equate to comedy. They need to rethink those categories. And the Academy needs to diversify so it’s not just the statement dramas that win.

  22. LadySlippers says:

I cannot comment on the other made for TV movies but I disliked Behind the Candelabra. It was very boring — lackluster is actually the best word to describe it. There were quite a few good performances in it but not enough to keep me interested in the show. So I’m not sure how it made a list of the best, unless it was a razzie.

    • Simmie says:

I haven’t seen Behind the Candelabra so I can’t fairly judge, but my vote for mini series is Top of the Lake. I was SO angry that it didn’t get anything at the Emmys. Now that you said that I feel justified in how angry I was.

      • starrywonder says:

OMG Top of the Lake was freaking awesome! I loved it.

      • LadySlippers says:

See? This is why it frustrated me because I went in thinking BtC would actually be GOOD. Parade’s End’s entire cast gave stellar performances, the writing and directing were also top notch. The challenge with PE is it’s not to everyone’s taste (I get that)….

But BtC is just not on par on almost any level with something I’d consider good. I can look at something and think its good even if I’m not a fan. When I’m not emotionally invested one iota in a movie/play/film/book I know that someone somewhere dropped the ball.

I’ll have to find the other TV films and watch them, if nothing other than to cleanse my palette.

      • Simmie says:

One of the most annoying things about awards is that they’ll reward mediocrity (or worse) if big names are associated with it. It’s Hollywood giving accolades to people they’ve decided they like, whether or not the specific work really deserves it. That seems to be the case with BtC.

    • Myrto says:

@LadySlippers: I completely agree about BtC. It was incredibly boring. I went to see it at the theater because of the great reviews and I just couldn’t have cared less about the whole thing. Like you I wasn’t emotionally invested at all.
I think they were nominated because it’s Soderbergh, Matt Damon and Michael Douglas (movie stars!).
OTOH Top of the Lake was amazing and it’s rightfully nominated.

      • LadySlippers says:

Myrto, I am glad it wasn’t just me that thought BtC was boring. And while I LOVE me some Matt Damon, this wasn’t his best performance by any stretch of the imagination (I blame the writing AND directing.

I’ll check out TotL. Perhaps it will help erase the memory of BtC.

  23. Tulip Garden says:

I haven’t seen most of these movies so what I am interested in a gossip level is “best actor/musical-comedy/film” because of Bale and Dicaprio. Seems like these two have been duking it out (in Christian Bale’s mind) since American Psycho. Also, Dicaprio probably doesn’t appreciate being surpassed by him in who is going to get the first Oscar of the two.
Also, this could all be in my imagination but I am really enjoying my fantasy scenario including fake bro’ing, fake compliments, and lots of dastardly looks thrown when no one is watching. Fun, isn’t it?

    • LadySlippers says:

Tulip! No crass gossiping for us flowers! We should maintain our obvious intellect and reason for the others to see. And any gossiping should be done in the the privacy of our garden or at the very least — behind our leaves.

*pulls Tulip closer and shields both mouths with leaves*

(Personally dear I love all the drunkenness that marinates the GG. People can’t walk nor can they give a long soliloquy without embarrassing themselves!!! Positively divine! And it’s almost well worth the possibility of getting frost bite on my leaves to risk coming out….)

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Why do you say that they’ve been duking it out? I’ve never heard either of them talk smack about anyone, let alone their “rival”. Neither of them seem very pretentious about their work at all…

    • Celia says:

DiCaprio was a producer on Bale’s film Out of the Furnace so I doubt there is a big rivalry going on these days except among their fans.

    • Peta says:

I know it’s an honor to be nominated and all, but it’s a shame neither of them (and probably Bruce Dern) were put into the Drama category where they really belonged and where it would boost their chances for an Oscar nom. Being nominated in the “Best Comedy or Musical” actor category I don’t think is a big deal to either of them and possibly even funny given they’re both dramatic actors with a capital D.

In a very competitive year it doesn’t greatly bolster WOWS or American Hustle’s Oscar chances when they have to compete in Musical/Comedy to even get nominated. Rush made it in the Best Drama category! I think Lawrence is a lock for a supporting nom though, maybe Jonah Hill too. My fingers are crossed for Scorsese.

    • Tulip Garden says:

      LadySlippers,
*Hiding behind water can* Psst, you must realize that Celebitchy IS our backyard. Goodness, I would never, ever want the other flowers to find out 🙂 And, yes, the alcohol makes the globes a veritable Par-tay compared to the Oscars. Must go time for my evening shower! 🙂

      @Virgilia and Cecilia
I am so sorry I typed this out pre-coffee this morning and I thought I had made it clear thru the “in Bale’s mind” that I was just speculating. I think the two men are both gentlemen and will behave accordingly. I also think that they are two very talented actors. I do think that Dicaprio has been on Bale’s “radar” since losing out the American Psycho role to him and only regaining it when Dicaprio dropped out. That’s all I meant that they are close in age and both acclaimed actors. The rest was just fun to imagine!

  24. Barbara says:

    Yay JLAW!
    YAY AMY!
    YAY TATIANA!!!
YAY TO THAT ENTIRE BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY CATEGORY.

    AND YAY FOR PHOENIX.

    HAHA NO OPRAH….

    • starrywonder says:

Yeah I am sorry but I really didn’t care for her acting in The Butler. Actually I didn’t really like the movie at all but that was just me.

  25. Myrto says:

I’m just glad that Julie Delpy and Greta Gerwig are nominated. They won’t win but I loved Before Midnight and Frances Ha so much that I’m happy they’re even on the list of nominees.
Although I don’t understand how Before Midnight can be considered a comedy?? Same with August: Osage County, apparently it’s a comedy? Really? Baffling.

And how in the hell is Downtown Abbey once again nominated?!! Jesus, enough.

  26. Audrey says:

We’ll I had a baby in March so I’ve seen none of these. Waiting for them to come out on video.

But I’m happy with the amount of eye candy now obligated to show up. Excited to see idris and fassbender on the red carpet

  27. lily says:

    My reaction:
Yay at Sally Hawkins, Oscar Isaac.
They actually snubbed Oprah !!! That’s amazing
I’m not surprised that they snubbed Fruitvale Salvation. GG only cares about A-listers.
Ugh at Lawrence’s and American Hustle’s noms.

  28. lisa2 says:

When I see the TV nominations it hits me that I don’t watch TV much at all. I may have seen a few of the shows..

happy for 12 Years A Slave and congrats to all the nominees. It was a great year in Movies and TV.. so many performances that could have gotten a nod.

  29. Nanou says:

@Tulip Garden, i soo agree with you. Bale vs Dicaprio !!! i can’t wait for the gossip behind this haha

So happy for my beloved Cate Blanchett !!! And Chiwetel Ejiofor !!!

  30. Lydia says:

Honestly, they should throw Michael B. Jordan into the Supporting category where he’d stand a better chance. If Meryl can be nominated for a COMEDIC performance in A:OC, then we can all look the other way when a lead actor lands in the supporting category.

  31. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Oh Lord–I can’t wait for the Golden Globes! This award’s season is going to be as a good as last year’s–too bad AnnE isn’t nominated for anything again. But I really hope 12YAS sweeps–I’ve never been affected by a film like that. And I LOVE Tina and Amy!

  32. Lila says:

Every nomination list has its flaws but the TV side of this list is closer to perfect than any I’ve seen in years. Three noms for The Good Wife, four for House of Cards, Amy Poehler, Tatiana Maslany, Homeland snubbed, Monica Potter, James Spader, Hayden Panettiere instead of Connie Britton. Be still my heart. The film side isn’t bad either but it is helped by the fact that there was a really wide range of good movies this year.

And oooh- Brad and Angelina should be there for 12 Years a Slave right? Jacqueline Bisset and Jon Voight are both nominated. Way to bring the Brange drama without even trying HFPA.

  33. Gwen says:

Julie Delpy got a nomination! <3

  34. Sam says:

Does anyone think Leo has a chance, or will it be any of the others?

    • Mari says:

My inclination is that the top two contenders for best actor (in a comedy or musical) are DiCaprio and Christian Bale, just based on what I’ve heard about their performances (particularly Leo’s).

      • Sam says:

I don’t want Leo to win, (sorry Leo fans!) bale for me is a superior actor but it would be fun if neither gets it and it goes to someone random and unexpected but by no means undeserved as everyone is talented.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I love them both, but Christian is the less douchey (and hotter) one, so I’m gonna go with him. Leo’s getting too old to be modelizing, so he’s slowly edging his way off the hit list–he’s talented, so he’ll always be on my shamef-cklist…..

And I just think Christian’s pot belly is so funny in this movie….I wonder how much fun he had doing that versus losing weight.

  35. Miss M says:

Gravity over “The Butler” for best motion picture?! Please…

    • Brittany says:

Miss M and Syko must be black. You only praise what has to do with blacks and their “culture.”

ed note– this person has been banned. We can’t delete this comment as so many people have responded to it and your comments will be hanging at the bottom, but this is definitely racist and the person is banned.

      • Miss M says:

First of all, Sorry to disappoint you, I consider myself Brazilian and not black or white. Yes, I look more “caucasian”, in case you were wondering.

Second, where in the world I’ve been “praising what has to do with blacks and their “culture.”’?

Third, you are not doing a good job at following my comments follower.

Lastly, I praise what I think is good.

ps: I have not praised 12 years a slave and Chiwetel at all. I have not understood the hype for the movie. Yes, he is a great actor, but didn’t see the mind-blowing performance that people are seeing.

      • T.fanty says:

Holy crap, that was racist and every kind of obnoxious. Spoken like an absolute ignoramus. How the hell did that comment get into a civilized conversation? Reporting you now.

Miss M – don’t justify yourself to that fool. Race doesn’t define culture. I’m white and that person is NOT one of my people.

      • Syko says:

Hate to disappoint you, but I’m white as the driven snow. Irish, German, Italian ancestry, with just a soupcon of Native American thrown in. And, unlike you, not racist. And I haven’t praised anything today, so you apparently are also delusional.

      • j.eyre says:

Since Miss M is an extremely bright and insightful person, I do not need to defend her; she has already defended herself with her usual grace and style.

I will, however, add to the comments above my absolute abhorrence at your use of quotation marks around the word culture. To imply that any group of people’s culture is some how lesser or, as you imply with your ill-meaning punctuation – imaginary – is reprehensible and inexcusable.

      • LadySlippers says:

In total agreement with the other fantastic comments on the this thread.

BTW, I’m calling for more diversity in all areas of entertainment. Does THAT make me black too? Geesh. Or does that make me an entirely different put down? (I won’t even write it as it’s that offensive)

Expand your horizons please. Or keep your bigoted comments to yourself.

    • Alyce says:

Please ignore the stupid racist comment, I’m sorry that the poster was rude to you. Now, to your original comment – I totally agree. I wasn’t impressed by Gravity at ALL. I liked the Butler but I don’t know if I’d give Oprah the nomination. I’m pretty happy with the Supporting Actress list (*assuming that I like J Lawrence in American Hustle, I haven’t seen it yet)

    • Miss M says:

@CB: thanks for banning this commenter. It took me a while to figure out what to reply and how. I hope I have not offended anyone.

@T.Fanty@j.eyre@syko@Alyssa: Thanks for stepping in and sharing your thoughts so eloquently!

@Alyssa: I liked Oprah, but I think Forest Whitaker was incredible. As for Jennifer Lawrence, I saw the movie last night. Obviously, you can tell she is too young to play that character, but she gave a great performance.

      • Marty says:

Don’t be sorry Miss M, the only person who was being offensive was Brittany.

@CB ladies- sorry if my response to Brittany was inappropiate. It was a knee-jerk reaction to her disgusting comment.

      • j.eyre says:

Marty darling, your positive traits are always on display. I have never seen you do or say anything inappropriate. Knee-jerk was to be expected here.

      • LadySlippers says:

No need to apologize. My comment that I hinted at was very rude as well.

At CB — thank you! I love being able to come here and (mostly) having very civil discussions. It’s refreshing. Thank you for all your hard work.

      • Marty says:

Aww thanks Miss J! I think because I am half black I took Brittany’s comment a little to personal. I should know better on the internet.

  36. balehead2012 says:

    Yuhu, go, Christian Bale!

  37. Syko says:

The only one of these movies I’ve seen is “Gravity” and I am appalled. Although the special effects were awesome and the movie was visually stunning, it was not a great movie. Very little story to it, and most of it being Sandra Bullock whipping off her space suit at every opportunity to show us her tiny shorts and braless tank top. I don’t know – if I was lost in space, I’d keep my damn space suit on. But then I’m not trying to add sex to an otherwise boring movie.

    • emmie_a says:

Gravity is actually the only movie I saw this year. I’m just not a movie person – I’m lucky if I see one/year… but because of all the hype I really expected more from Gravity. Technically it was stunning – but the story and the acting were just ok. I sort of knew what was going to happen before it happened so the suspense just wasn’t there.

  38. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

James Spader is nominated too! SWEET!

    • Valois says:

I’ll always and forever love him for Boston Legal :3

      • Jayna says:

The best couple with the best chemistry on TV ever – James Spadar and William Shatner. Those scenes where they sat together at night smoking cigars having these great conversations were just brilliant.

  39. videli says:

I just love Maslany. There should be more like her!

    • lunchcoma says:

Absolutely. I’m glad to see she’s finally getting some recognition. She has one of the trickiest acting jobs on television, pulls it off wonderfully, and hasn’t gotten awards recognition so far. I’m not sure if it’s channel-based bias or if it’s bias against genre shows (or at least genre shows that don’t appear on HBO).

  40. Sam H x says:

The only movie I’ve seen is Gravity, which was visually incredible to watch, I thought Sandra was really good but not enough to get an Oscar out of it. I could see it sweeping the technical awards at the Oscars though, which it ticked all the boxes. 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, The Butler, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Captain Phillips are all on my watch list though.

I’m very happy for Mr James Spader’s Golden Globe Nomination for his role in The Blacklist!! He owns that role he does, plays it with complete and utter perfection. Although, in the last two episodes, Diego Klattenhoff (Ressler) pulled off the scenes with James Spader when he gets injured and Lizzie was actually bada*s.

  41. jl says:

Hope Top of the Lake wins something, so good. Pissed about Homeland and Walking Dead. Nothing………..

  42. Jayna says:

I feel like such a loser. I have only seen Blue Jasmine out of these movies listed for Best Movie, Best Actress, Best Actor. I keep meaning to get to the movies and just haven’t.

  43. Kelsie says:

Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor! He so deserves it, I really hope he wins!
