Walton Goggins on praise for his trans performance: ‘It made me cry’

Timothy Olyphant

These are photos from the Season 5 premiere of Justified, which aired last night. I will not spoil (except to say that Raylan declined a beej from an unlikely offerer) but readily admit that I am an extreme fangirl of this show. Even after last season’s mind-numbling waltz into the Drew Thompson mystery, I’m still here. Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins are back for more bromantic action. Oh yes, Olyphant looks slick and got a haircut. As for Walton, his hair looks a dreadful mess, which (as any loyal fan knows) is the precursor for an excellent season.

More photos from the premiere appear at the bottom of this post. First let’s take a brief detour for a Walton Goggins interview. This isn’t as amazing as his thoughts on femininity, but it will do. Walton is posing here for Justified, but he’s also discussing his captivating turn as transexual, Venus Van Dam on Sons of Anarchy. He came onto the role in a roundabout way, but he did a a wonderful job:

“You know it was a conversation with Kurt Sutter who is an old friend of mine from The Shield. We were talking about how I could participate in Sons of Anarchy and the restrictions based on Shane from The Shield and how a character like that could be seen in the world of Sons of Anarchy. I kind of off handedly said that the only way we could do it is if I was a transgender. He sent me a text about a year later asking were you serious and I was filming Django at the time and was about as masculine as I could possibly be and I said ‘about what?’ He said ‘about playing a transgender’ and I said, ‘why do you have pages’ and he said ‘yep.’ So I said send them and when he did, I was just floored. I was blown away by this woman who is elegant, refined, sophisticated, funny and a three dimensional human being. Regardless of their sexual orientation and it’s been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I was stopped by someone the other day walking into the grocery store and it was a transgender and she said, I want to tell you how much I admire what you did. I didn’t want to be the jerk who assumed it was for Venus, so I asked this person what are you referring to specifically. She said Venus and she said thank you very much for liberating us from the definition of victim and misfit and drug addict and thank you for giving us a voice with power behind it and someone who has fully accepted who they are and has something to contribute to the world and that is a light in the world. Outside of what any critic or fan would ever say that conversation for me alone was the most important endorsement that I have ever received as an actor. It was an extraordinary experience and I was with my wife at the time. It really made me cry.”

I love this interview, and it’s hard to imagine Walton crying at all from the tough guys he plays on the tellie. He also has an upcoming guest spot on Community, which should be interesting. I’d still take Olyphant first, but Walton is a tough competitor. These pictures are proof.

I’m including photos of Jacob Pitt (who is a closet fan favorite) and Jere Bruns (who is hiding his amazing Botox brows behind glasses) in the gallery. Also on tap are the ladies of Justified. My pretend girlfriend, Joelle Carter, looks great. Erica Tazel is working it and will hopefully get more screentime this season. She deserves it. Natalie Zea (who recently got engaged to Travis Schuldt) is back as Winona, who will spend most of the season offscreen in Florida raising Raylan’s baby daughter. Amy Smart also joins the show this season as a social worker who gets down and dirty with Raylan. I can’t wait.

Timothy Olyphant makes every other man look like a joke. He is so sexy and confident and let’s not even start with his sense of humour. OMG.
Why don’t you post his Conan interview? He was hilarious.

  2. Tiffany27 says:

I love Walton Goggins and I think he’s hot. Yep, I said it.

  3. blue marie says:

What a lovely story, although I didn’t watch SOA I kinda wish I’d seen this now. I might just have to go look it up.

  4. mom2two says:

Walton Goggins is absolutely terrific as Venus in SOA. I am glad people on the street are stopping him, he did such a good job and Venus really is a well written character. I’d love to see him get a guest star emmy nod for it but the emmys don’t seem to like SOA, so his great performance will go ignored.

  5. GiGi says:

I literally just watched that episode (are there more with Venus?) of SOA last night. I’m obsessed with this show – there are so many really great actors there. Except ol’ One-Expression Maggie Siff.

Anyhoo… I loved Walton Goggins as Venus. He was so perfect. And I loved that he wasn’t some sad, pathetic character. The transexual people I know personally are professional, average folk. Not junkies or “deviants”. He really did a wonderful job with a great character.

I believe there are 3 episodes that Venus is in, Orca Shrugged (S5) was the first. Its a fantastic character, I hope Kurt Sutter finds a place for her next season. He did a twitter Q&A last night and said he would love to find a way to make that happen. Walton is amazing !

I love those two guys and Justified way more than I can ever put into words!
Walton is always amazing, I’d recommend checking out some of the films he made with Ray McKinnon (Rectify), and I’d have a hard time picking his best performance because they’re all so great.
I am so happy Justified is back, the first episode was really good, and I can’t wait to see where they’re going with the whole season (and I thought Season 4 was fantastic). I do hope Erica gets a little more storyline, but the show has always had an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great actors and characters.

  8. Dani says:

I’ve loved Timothy Olyphant since I saw Catch and Release like 10 years ago. Swoon. So handsome.

  9. Sweets says:

    Timothy Olyphant… *Dramatic sigh*

Now, this man is my forever dong.

  10. icey says:

I also love that Walton Goggins. In the extras for The Shield’s final season, he gives a truly loving thank you speech to the cast and crew and wept his way through it. I love a man who is not afraid to have his emotions expressed in tears. I’ve seen him get emotional in a couple of interviews as well.

My stars – there’s just everything right about Timothy Olyphant

  12. doofus says:

I love that the character name “Venus Van Dam” is a nod to The Shield.

on that show, his character used the alias of “Cletus Van Dam” a few times.

  13. vv says:

I love him. I love Justified. I love Boyd…and I am stoked to hear he will be on Community!

  14. d says:

Oh god, I love Justified. It’s one of my all-time favourite shows. I’m glad Goggins is recognized; he’s such a good actor. And never in a million years would I ever want a man like Boyd in real life, and yet somehow, Goggins makes me want him. Olyphant’s no slouch either! He’s also enjoyable to watch in the movie The Crazies. Justified really does have a great cast; I like everyone on that show, even Dewey, poor thing!

  15. Mr. Stinky FishFace says:

Ughhhhh The Shield is my all time favorite TV show and Walton’s character in it was just…heart wrenching. Now watching him in SoA (which I just binged watched my way through) makes me feel like I need to rewatch The Shield. He’s such a classy guy and so is just about everyone else from those shows. Soooo glad Charlie dropped that 50 shades of crap movie!
