Michael Fassbender met with JJ Abrams about ‘Star Wars’: Fassy the Jedi?

wenn20975344

I’ve been ignoring most of the speculation about the new Star Wars movies. JJ Abrams is involved and the trade papers and nerd-blogs have been all abuzz for months about who will and will not be cast as various Jedis or Skywalker relations. Benedict Cumberbatch’s name has been batted around a lot, and I think Bendict probably wants a part, but he’s trying to play it cool. Meanwhile, this week’s rumor was too good for me to ignore. There’s a remote possibility that Michael Fassbender’s name has come up for some part. Fassbender: Jedi Knight? Fassy: The Han Solo Heir?

The Star Wars: Episode VII casting speculation game continues — and The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision has a few names to add to the mix: Michael Fassbender, Girls star Adam Driver and Hugo Weaving.

Never has a project attracted so much ink about meetings, but such is the passionate interest in Star Wars. Last fall, every few weeks there was a breathless reveal of a meeting, with names such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan, Jack O’Connell, Alex Pettyfer, Saoirse Ronan and Sullivan Stapleton coming up. And those are only the names that leaked out.

With all the actors being tossed around — including a report this week that Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemons was meeting with director J.J. Abrams about a role — Heat Vision thought it was time to check in on Star Wars in general.

Sources confirm Plemons is on the list to chat with Abrams for Episode VII (and possibly the entire trilogy), with a meeting set to take place this week. But he is only one of a long string of actors on Abrams’ meeting list.

As usual, Disney and Lucasfilm are declining to comment, as are the agencies of the respective actors. The project has changed significantly since Oscar winner Michael Arndt split as writer on Episode VII in the fall, with duties taken up by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

According to multiple insiders, the reason for the parting of ways was not due to a timeframe issue, as has been reported, but rather due to a difference of opinion of which characters to emphasize.

Arndt is said to have focused on the offspring of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), with the original trilogy’s heroes taking on supporting roles. Abrams, however, wanted Episode VII to focus on the classic trio of characters, so audiences could have one more chance to enjoy them before a fitting send-off. The new characters, the offspring, will now be in supporting roles, according to these sources, and take center stage in Episode VIII and IX. Some characters have disappeared from the Arndt script and new ones are being added.

Star Wars creator George Lucas, who directed the 1977 original and each of the most recent trilogy, was also involved in the debate, according to insiders. But Lucas, who sold his Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, acquiesced to Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy, who now runs Lucasfilm.

So with Abrams and Kasdan now overhauling the script, that means many of the actors who had auditioned have been nixed for various reasons. For example, one actor who met with Abrams in the fall before the overhaul was Mud breakout star Tye Sheridan. But sources say that at this stage, there is no need for such young actors and thus Sheridan will not be involved. In another case, one part that was initially conceived as a 20-year-old male is now being rewritten to be 40 years old.

Abrams is, according to many sources, casting a wide, wide net and meeting with “everyone.” Even those who have copped to a meeting, such as Ronan, say that.

Abrams has continued meeting with actors while the new script is taking shape. According to sources, he met with Fassbender in December. Girls star Driver is being eyed for a role.
While most names come with no identifying character, Weaving does. Weaving, according to two sources, met for a part to play an Imperial commander.

The latest bit to surface this week is that Abrams and Lucasfilm are now searching for a twentysomething female actress who is either of mixed race or black. The rumor is that Obi-Wan Kenobi had a daughter or granddaughter.

Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

[From THR]

I hope JJ meets with Lupita Nyong’o. She could be the daughter of Mace Windu, right? Who else should JJ meet with? We’ve got Fassbatch/Cumberbender in the mix (hopefully together, in some kind of sexy sandwich), so who else? I wouldn’t mind if Clive Owen was in the mix. I bet that man knows how to handle a lightsaber (mmm…). Who else? Emma Stone might be interesting, although her career really doesn’t need a Star Wars infusion, I think Emma would be an adorable heir to Carrie Fisher. For whatever reason, I’m feeling Fassbender as Obi-Wan’s heir too. And then Cumberbatch? God knows. Hopefully a villain: Darth Cumber.

I think this story is only as a result of the FassBatch Dance-Off 2014.

EDIT after Lucretia’s post below: Ah right, I only saw it yesterday online and it was a bad tabloid so I figured they made it up.

IF it’s true, why is everyone dying to be in these movies?!? JJ’s record with movies isn’t exactly stellar.

    • Sarah says:

Jedi’s aren’t supposed to have children – at least the old ones. That’s why the Anakin/Padme relationship was forbidden. If they go with Obi-Wan, Mace, etc. all having secret love children, I think a lot of Star Wars fans will lose their collective minds.

      • CarnivalBaby says:

Agreed Sarah…What the hell so all this time Obi Wan was carrying on some secret relationship too…Beware of these love stories, like the love triangle in the most recent Hobbit sometimes they add absolutely nothing. Unless he fell in love with someone when he was alone and hiding in Tattooine. I could by that.

  2. Lucretia says:

This story was in the Hollywood Reporter on Saturday before the dance-off, so I don’t think it was prompted by that. I hope Fassbender would play a hero rather than a villain, if he winds up in the film, which is probably unlikely.
I would also suggest for mixed-race or black twenty-something woman: Gugu Mbatha-Raw. (A little older, but she doesn’t look it.)

  3. blue marie says:

Why? I loved the originals, but not really a fan of the 3 newer ones. Also, is cross-nerdization allowed? I mean, if you’re in Star Trek then you shouldn’t be in Star Wars right? RIGHT?!? There are rules man..

    • Lindy79 says:

I agree. At least there has to be a considerable gap between franchises. If BC is in it and is a villain, all people are going to think is Khan.
Likewise for Fassbender, X-Men 2 is out this Summer, so the Magneto connection will be too fresh imo.

I just have a feeling these movies will be a lens flarey mess.

      • blue marie says:

You’re right, I had forgotten all about X-Men. (shame on me)

      • LadyMTL says:

I agree as well, there’s a limit to how many franchises a person needs to be in, IMHO. I mean, JLaw is in Hunger Games and X-Men and already I think that’s borderline overdoing it, why do Fassy and Cumberbatch need to be in Star Wars exactly? I wouldn’t mind if they had cameos or something along those lines but anything more than that would be a bit silly.

And yes, it probably will be a god-awful festival of lens flare. I’m getting a headache just thinking about it.

      • Lindy79 says:

I really don’t get why Cumberbatch is so keen to be in it. He’s not out-right denying it when asked so it’s probably a possibility…I don’t know, maybe he just enjoyed making Star Trek and the big budget element that came with the promo tour so wants another go.

I’d honestly rather see him try comedy or something lighter that isn’t a period piece but I guess he’s might not be being offered those type of roles.

      • Because it’s Star Wars! Nothing shaped my movie-going experience like Star Wars. I was obsessed as a kid. Maybe they were too? But I am suspicious of this new direction to give the old characters a “proper send-off.” I’ll add “schmaltz-fest” to your “lens flarey mess.”

      • Green Girl says:

Since Cumby has said he grew up watching those films, I can’t blame him at all for wanting to be in the movies. I mean, who wouldn’t? I am a very casual fan and even I’d jump at the chance to be an extra!

And being in a franchise is a great way to make some major bucks, especially if your character can be in a number of movies. You make bank on a franchise, and then you have the flexibility to be in those little indie films that pay very little or be in a small play for three months if that’s what you want.

I just hope they start finalizing stuff, if only because it seems like we’ve only heard rumors of this film for months.

      • Green Girl says:

@Lindy – I would love to see BC in lighter fare, too. Perhaps he doesn’t want to start doing those films, though, because it can be easy to get typecast?

      • Delorb says:

To say nothing of all the light saber jokes.

      • Mairead says:

Cumby, like Fassy, is a total dork – bless ’em.

      • Jessica says:

@The Blower’s Daughter: Re the focus on the old characters and the “proper send off”, I’m pretty sure they already had a proper send off… at the end of Return of the Jedi. It was a proper enough send off for 30 years, but now suddenly it isn’t. I think JJ has a fantasy–that he’s had since he was a kid–of making a Star Wars movie about Han Solo, so that’s what he’s going to do. It will probably be a nostalgia fest to satisfy his teenage wet dream. I’m even more worried about the project now since they’ve let that out. I was happy when Kasdan came on board to co-write (since he wrote Empire and Raiders), but now I’m worried.

    • mom2two says:

I really think Fassbender and Cumberbatch are two people who least need another franchise right now. I mean, Fassbender has X-Men and Cumberbatch could easily return for another Star Trek movie. I am sure if they are cast in SW, they will do well…but think outside of the same 10 actors Hollywood.
Even without those franchises, Hollywood is dying to work with these two and they certainly do not need the franchise career boost. Why not give the roles to actors who could use a break?
I agree 100% with you bluemarie.

PS: I feel the same way about Depp playing Dr. Strange. I am sure he can do well with the part but does he really need another franchise fresh off the heels of PoTC?

    • Jessica says:

lol, I agree. Khan can’t be in Star Wars.

  4. Luna says:

    Yes, please!!

  5. Mia4S says:

I am a massive fan of the original three movies (what prequels?) and a fan of Abrams new Star Trek movies….and I could not be LESS excited about new Star Wars. Hey children of the 80s! Remember the perfect victory of your heroes?….well here’s how they got old and died! Fun. Plus the need to have everyone be the son or daughter of? Lazy. Ugh.

  6. CarnivalBaby says:

He could be a Sith or a Jedi, I don’t business…would love to see him in Star Wars. And Ejiofor and Danai Guriria who plays Michonne on the Walking Dead. She would be an awesome Jedi. On another note the better introduce a Obi-Wan child carefully. Jedi are not known to be having kids. I’m not sure I would appreciate. But it all depends. I am not happy the handed this to Abrams, so he better be careful, but I am open to changes.

  7. M.A.F. says:

I’m still on the fence about this whole project. I love JJ Abrams but he has a way of screwing things up. Hated Alias towards the end, Lost and that ending, Star Trek and the fact that he wasn’t even a fan to begin with, etc. He starts out strong then seems to lose the way a bit. Plus, seeing how Lucas took a dump on Star Wars with those god-awful new trilogy movies, ugh. I don’t know yet. Maybe it will come down to casting.

  8. GeeMoney says:

“I hope JJ meets with Lupita Nyong’o. She could be the daughter of Mace Windu, right?”

I don’t know why I laughed at this, but I did.

  9. Leah says:

Okay, I’m feeling a bit old and grumpy right now… but seriously, has anyone been CONFIRMED for these movies (other than the original cast that are returning)??? I’m getting a little sick of the “OMG BOB ACTOR IS RUMORED TO BE IN STAR WARS!!!11!!! He kind of looked in JJ’s direction and then they BREATHED THE SAME AIR at a PARTY once THREE MONTHS AGO!!!1! SHOE IN FOR DARTH FARTSMART” But maybe that’s me. If half the people who are rumored to be in it are ACTUALLY in it… movie looks like it could be good!

  10. Marianne says:

I would love Michael Fassbender in the movie. I think I would rather see Fassy as the villain vs Cumberbatch.

  11. Lucy says:

I could totally see him as a Jedi tbh. And I really, really hope they give Saoirse a role!!! Emma wouldn’t be bad, either. It’s true that she doesn’t really need it, though.

  12. Lori says:

Sorry, no A$$bender has lost all the hot for me. With d!ickish behaviour in regard to championing for his film TYAS and with the “dating” of Gerard Butler’s cast offs.

  13. Esmerelda says:

Ok, so I have a bad feeling about this new “JJ’s Geriatric SW: lens flare edition”.
But if they use enough Wagner in the soundtrack and avoid the kind of dialogue that almost killed Ewan McGregor’s career, IDK, maybe they’ll end up with okay-ish.
Aaaand, if the rumors are true, they’re casting an awful lot of handsome guys. I approve of this strategy.

  14. JessicaC says:

“I hope JJ meets with Lupita Nyong’o. She could be the daughter of Mace Windu, right.”

No. Because if we’re talking about the daughter that Mace Windu would not have had since Jedi aren’t supposed to have children, then she would be a bit older than Luke and Leia, because Mace Windu was from the same trilogy as Anakin and therefore a generation older than Luke and Leia. VII, VIII, and IX are chronologically after the original trilogy with Harrison Ford. If Mace had a daughter, which he wouldn’t, she would be in her 60 s or 70 s. Lupita is too young for that. If Lupita played his granddaughter, then maybe you’d be right. However, Mace Windu did not have children because Jedi are not supposed to have children which is why the Anakin/Padme relationship was forbidden and secretetive. If they gave Mace or Obi Wan a child or grandchild, people would be pissed.

    • Al says:

THIS! Obi-Wan wouldn’t have had children, and I don’t imagine Luke going to have kids either.

The only children they should have in the series are Han & Leia’s children.

  15. Mina says:

YES! I literally dreamt about this months ago. He made an awesome evil character who turned to the good side.

  16. Mairead says:

You just know this eejit would spend most of his time on set making light-sabre noises and tring to outdo Cumby and his (frankly uncanny) Chewbacca impression 😆

(apparently he’s one of the people behind getting Assassins Creed done – he went to the workshop to see the weapons and spent ages playing with them like the big child that he is) 😀

  17. Al says:

I’ve read a few of theStar Wars books that were set after the movies. My favourites were the Jedi Academy trilogy. I always thought they’d make a good third trilogy of movies if they were going to do it. I like the idea of the original characters being here in small supporting roles. In the books Luke went on to start a Jedi academy. I think Leia was a politician/ambassador. I can’t remember what Han did.

I love Star Wars, but I have a horrible feeling I’m going to hate these movies even more than episodes 1-3.

  18. Green Eggs and Ham says:

There are recent photos of Michael Fassbender and his new girlfriend holding hands in Italy; none other than Gerald Butler’s ex girlfriend.
    Civilization has been spared.
Ms. Beharie will be finally left alone from his embarrassing fans.
