Cate Blanchett in pale pink Givenchy at the SAGs: fabulous or unflattering?

wenn21005458

This is the heavy-hitters/Best Actress post! Let’s start with Cate Blanchett, who is pretty close to a sure thing now for the Best Actress Oscar. Cate has picked up the Golden Globe, the Critics Choice, a slew of critics’ awards and now the SAG Award for her role in Blue Jasmine. Which means that she has a really, really good shot of picking up her first lead actress Oscar, her second overall (she previously won the Supporting Actress Oscar). And you know what? I’m glad. Cate’s performance in Blue Jasmine was wonderful and funny and awful and brilliant. She deserves all of the acclaim.

As for her gown… she wore Givenchy. As in, Riccardo Tisci designed this. It looks like a maternity gown, right? I think I would have loved this if it was on Kerry Washington, but on slender, elegant Cate, it’s not quite right. I love her in pink, of course, and I like the way she styled it, but the design is just too “maternity” for her. PS… Cate’s shoe game is great.

And here are Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson, both nominated for Best Actress at the SAGs. I feel like Meryl has made her peace with losing the big awards, so she’s not really bothering to get all dolled up. This frumpy black dress is Stella McCartney – Meryl wore Stella to the Critics Choice Awards too. Blah, she needs to find a new designer, Stella’s designs are doing nothing for her. Emma wore vintage – 1930s William something. She also wore FLATS! Louboutin flats, but flats none the less. I love her look. It’s the look of someone who knows she’s going to lose to La Blanchett and she wants to be comfortable yet fabulous.

Cate’s dress is pretty meh but, delighted that she won her performance was fantastic in Blue Jasmine.

  2. Christin says:

I like Emma’s vintage dress. The other two dresses, not so much. The dresses that pass as high fashion these days are mostly “meh”.

Cate’s dress is too billowy, especially when viewed at a side angle. The front v-shape with the wide band of sparkly fabric looks a bit cheap.

  3. lisa2 says:

I don’t like what any of these fabulous women are wearing.

but my favorite thing was Cate giving Matthew M. shade for his speech which was ridiculous to to say the least. I’m glad that he has been doing some great work.. but he is getting on my nerves. becoming too pretentious.

anyway Congrats to Cate. Hard to believe it was her first Best Actress win.

    • Kiddo says:

I didn’t watch, what did she say? MM gives me the inexplicable skeeves.

      • Stef Leppard says:

She said, 29 seconds? Matthew M talked about Neptune FFS, can I please have five seconds?!
        Or words to that effect.

    • lower-case deb says:

i have a feeling that, if Oscar was watching the SAGs tonight, it will be looking foward to a Cate rub down, the buffing of gold-plated gluteus maximus 🙂 will make other statuettes jealous i’m sure.

    • Lark says:

Eh, I thought she was just joking with him. They seem pretty friendly.

      • lisa2 says:

you can joke and shade at the same time.. She just make a remark about his speech when they were telling her to cut her time.

  4. Mimz says:

Not a fan of any of the looks but hey they dont need to look like sexy mermaids, their personalities and natural beauty speaks volumes!!

I cant wait to watch blue jasmine!!

    • Pri says:

True that their personalities outshine just about everything, one might not even necessarily have to watch Emma’s movies to know how fabulous she is, but this is an event, an awards show no less and one that’s gonna be televised, they could surely have tried. Neither looks good, except for hair and makeup. And someone needs to give that Riccardo Tisci a lesson on female forms! He just can’t dress anybody properly. I’m so ugh with him now that I’m inclined to believe that he’s a really good con artist who faked his resume and and talents and used unfair means to get into Givenchy…. I know avant garde fashion is not for commoners to understand but this is absurd! Absolute shit! Shit! …Blah…I’m gonna start ranting now…..Byeee*embarrassed now* (but you get the point, right?).

    • bella bella says:

Mimz, Just make sure when you watch Blue Jasmine that you are not feeling even slightly blue, or anxious, because I left that movie SO stressed out, I was exhausted. Cate is brilliant, though, even if the movie is like going through a wringer.

  5. Miss M says:

Blanchett is in my “I can do no wrong on the red carpet” list. But , loved the color and the idea. I didn’t love the execution, too much fabric in a slender body.

I love Emma Thompson and I wish she (Or Dame Dench) had one some of the awards.

    • Julia says:

+1 on the Queen Cate comments- she’s divine, her posture lovely, that particular dress not so much of either. Bad execution….

  6. V4real says:

Love Kate but she looks like she’s wearing a bib.

    • Sarah says:

That’s exactly what I said. The way it moved was even worse than in photos! Now I find out it’s Ricardo T. Oh why Cate?

    • Malificent says:

Yup. My first thought was — if you’re going to wear a lobster bib, at least wear a pink, sparkly lobster bib.

    • ncmagnolia says:

My thoughts exactly- a maternity bib, specifically. I thought Cate still looked gorgeous, but the dress was not my fav.

I loved Emma’s vintage dress. The flats, not so much. And beautiful Meryl, she needs to stop letting Stella bollocks up her fashion game. Other than that, all three of these ladies are goddesses in their own right, and shine through any off-fashion they’re subjected to. Adore all of them!

Also, a huge thank you to Kaiser, CB and Bedhead for all these amazing SAG posts!! Y’all must’ve pulled an all-nighter, much appreciated!! 😀

    • lucy2 says:

Yes, the bib part ruined an otherwise gorgeous look.

  7. smee says:

I think Cate’s dress is beautiful, but it actually would make a good maternity evening gown (esp. the side view).

I like Emma’s dress, but I’m not sure she’s pulling it off. While I love the slits at the bottom, it would have looked better on her without that detail.

Meryl’s dress is nice, kinda dull, but I do not like the cut of her pump on her foot – not flattering.

Cate was fab in Blue Jasmine, but I’m very curious to see Osage County – the previews with Meryl look amazing!

  8. Kiddo says:

In the last photo, Meryl looks beautiful. I don’t even mind the dress there. I love vintage, but that is some kind of strange dress on Emma, the bottom has an Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves feel (but having it looked it up, that was in 1944, not the 30’s). Her face, however, looks radiant. The pink is a flattering color for Cate, especially the deeper embellishments, but the top part seems like a high-end lobster bib. Maybe if the material was lighter, and it cascaded and fell softly against her, it might have worked. It looks like the designer used a bolt of heavy fabric on the top part alone.

  9. My first thought for Cate’s dress was that Thor’s wife should be wearing it…..love the color though.

  10. Janet says:

Didn’t like the style of Blanchett’s dress at all. Thompson would have looked better in low heels instead of flats, and Streep just looked dowdy and frumpish as per usual.

  11. Flora Kitty says:

It’s not great, but compared to what Ricardo would have designed for Kim K it’s not that awful.

    • Ice Maiden says:

I actually really like Cate’s look, but I’m guessing it’s the type of dress that would look much better in motion than in photographs. That kind of pale pink colour doesn’t always photograph well, and you can’t really appreciate the flowing fabric in still pictures.

  12. Jessica says:

I’d like to think Cate’s dress must’ve looked cool at some point, but all I see is a giant bib of too much fabric and sequins. Disappointing.

  13. Maya says:

I love Cate and she looks radiant here.

Am I the only who thinks this dress looks like an Indian Saree?

    • Cobra says:

I do too. North Indian style.

    • Kimmy says:

Radiant is the perfect word for how Cate looked. I love it.the dress looked comfy!

Emma’s was fantastic. I love that she wore flats. She so tall! She looks to be almost even with Meryl who was in heels.

  14. Lark says:

I love Amy, but I can’t be the only one who finds it absurd that she snuck in but not Emma Thompson? Anyway, I love Cate but no. Her stylist does her no favors.

  15. Tig says:

I loved the color on Cate, but clearly it didn’t fit- she kept pulling and tugging on it whenever the camera was on her. I loved Emma’s flats- I wish her dress had been a tad longer. Meryl’s makeup was fab, but the dress was ugh.

  16. Marianne says:

Ugly all around. The sequins on Cate’s dress look cheap. Plus, it looks like a bib anyway.

Meryl looks so frumpy and hate that everyone always gives her a pass “because she’s Meryl”. Sorry, don’t care.

I like that Emma just went ahead and wore sandals. LOL. But don’t care for the dress really. I liked it better than her Globes one though.

  17. Tig says:

On another note- I was happy to see Tracy Ullman was there. Is she a friend of Meryl’s? Looked like she was sitting at her table. Anyway, if that’s the case, go on Meryl for being a supportive friend.

  18. LaurieH says:

For me, all three women look amazing….from the neck up. The dresses, however, are a little tragic. They may be vintage. They may be couture. They are still a bit of a tragedy. Cate’s dress has potential; the color is nice on her. But the weight and bulk of that sequined bit on the front adds a cheapness to the dress and causes it to hang in a way that, from the side, makes Cate look like she has a unnaturally high baby bump or large, prematurely hanging breasts. As to Emma, whom I utterly adore, her dress looks like something a hostess at an Asian restaurant would wear. I suppose that thing on her chest/shoulder is supposed to be a peacock, but at first glance it looks like an ornate, golden letter A for actress. Then there’s Meryl – once again dressing like a Connecticut housewife on her way to the country club for dinner. The dress is…meh. The top around the mid-section is a bit too baggy. And the black dress, coupled with the black bag, black shoes and black-rimmed glasses makes it look dour and funeralish.

  19. ANDREA1 says:

Cate’s dress isn’t flattering and I love love the fact that she shaded Matthew M. His speech was ridiculous I think all the winning is getting to his head. And I So love Forest whitetaker’s face when the camera cut to him after Matthew was announced winner that look was priceless like wtf how can you award this guy and I totally felt the same way.
On another note Meryl and Emma’s gown isn’t flattering too but they are what the crop of actresses in this generation should look like. Ageing with grace without crazy and endless botox.

  20. The Original G says:

Cate looks like she got up from the table with something still tucked in. Is that colour called “death warmed over” in french?

The hemline and shoes make Emma look like a hostess in Chinese theme casino. She’s a name tag away from being culturally offensive.

As great an actress as Meryl is, she can’t even be bothered to act like she gives a f*ck by the way she doesn’t dress this year.

  21. Tsarina says:

These all look so ill-fitted. Cate’s top looks like she a giant bib on. None of these looks does it for me. I hope the ladies step-it up a notch or two for the Oscars. So far, Lupita Nyong’o in Gucci won it for the evening IMO.

  22. MrsBPitt says:

As soon as I saw Cate’s dress, my mind instantly thought “hiding a baby bump”…The color on her was beautiful, and if she had just gotten rid of the bib thing, and the dress was form fitting, it would have been stunning! Emma and Meryl may not win best dressed of the evening, but I just love the both of them…they don’t seem to take all these awards as seriously as some, (I’m talking to you Matthew) Its not the Medal of Honor for saving 5 guys from an onslaught of bullets…its an award for being the best actor, you know for PRETENDING…

  23. ray says:

the cut to emma thompson when they were announcing the nominees for best actress was phenomenal. i love her. also her hair looks so much better than when it is all poofed up. i want emma thompson to be my mum

  24. shellybean says:

Cate looks great in pink, but the design of the dress is awful.

  25. Lucy says:

Maybe these were not their best looks, but their talent and awesomeness outshine their looks, so they all get a pass from me! Also, the three of them looked like they were having a great time, especially Emma!

  26. zut alors! says:

I seem to recall Cate Blanchett having a rather pronounced underbite when she first came to prominence. Does anyone else remember that? It looks like she had it corrected. I didn’t really care for her SAG outfit. I do love that she’s very interested in fashion and it doesn’t detract from her “serious actress” vibe. I wish my girl Angie Jo would take a page from Cate’s playbook and have fun with her fashion.

  27. MerlinsWife says:

Emma Thompson looks fantastic! I absolutely love her, and it is so nice to see her in something fitted. The bottom of the dress is… not ideal… but from the waist up, she looks so good that I don’t even care.

I really like the colour of Cate’s dress; she looks radiant… but I agree about their being too much fabric. If I had her body, there is no way I’d cover it up like that!

Meryl’s dress looks like it should be on “people of Wal-Mart,” not a red carpet.

    • emmie_a says:

I agree about Emma. And the flats work for her.

I didn’t like anything about Cate’s dress — but I loved her hair color. It looked great on-camera.

  28. Megan says:

So happy Kate won but she was one of the worst dressed on the carpet. She should thank God for Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts for keeping her from the top of the worst dress list.

The only thing good about her dress was the color, but the style, the what were probably beading but looked like sequins, and the draping all wrong.

    • Tatiana says:

She is actually considered one of the best dressed woman. It is true that her dresses are not for everyone but they are always interesting.

  29. J.Lee says:

I have always loved Emma but I catch myself cringing at her behavior this awards season. Cate on the other hand was funny in an effortless way. Emma should take it down a notch or 10

  30. Az says:

Meryl Streep’s default setting IS frumpy. Look back and you’ll see I’m right (for the record, I love Meryl both as an actress and as a person). It’s only relatively recently (I’d say maybe since Devil wears Prada) that her style has improved. Emma Thompson is giving me eccentric Englishwoman vibes which… this is so not the look I want to see her espousing. Leave that to Helena Bonham-Carter. Emma is so much better than that. Finally, looking at Cate’s dress, i have come to the conclusion that Riccardo Tisci hates ALL women, not just Kim Kardashian. Although he probably hates Kim just a tad more.

  31. lucy2 says:

Three beautiful, extremely talented, smart ladies. None of which managed a red carpet win here, but really, who cares?

  32. Cirque28 says:

That’s a strange, strange place on a woman’s body to put a giant band of sparkles. Other than the huge pink cravat of doom, it would have been a great dress and Cate looks gorgeous. Meryl is beautiful here because she is so comfortable in her own skin.

  33. A Fan says:

Jeez, I thought Cate Blanchett’s dress looked great on her. She can pull off a baggy look – not all women can do that.

Plus, the colour is really good on her. I’m into flattering colours these days – what actually looks good with a person’s natural skin, hair, and eye colour (which can be different than personal preference).

    […’cause when it’s off, it’s bad.]

  34. lisa2 says:

Kerry Washington should have worn Cate’s dress instead of that horrible thing she was wearing.

  35. Maria says:

    Sigh, Cate is wonderful.
Blitzing the misogynistic red carpet focus on what the girls are wearing vs talents of the men:

  36. Charlotte says:

I actually love this dress the most from this event. It was stunning yet unexpected and it looked gorgeous in motion. She was my best dressed last night.
