Julia Roberts in a pink Valentino jumpsuit at the SAGs: cute or terrible?

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loathed Julia Roberts’ Valentino jumpsuit. Like, I think this was the SAG look that I hated the most. It wasn’t just that I thought it was unflattering or that I felt sorry for her, which would be my reaction if someone else wore this. I actively hated this on Julia and I hated her a little for choosing it. She’s 46 years old and she chose a bubble-gum-pink Halston-esque jumpsuit?!? It was the wrong style for her body, the color was cloying and way too cutesy and it just did not look good on her at all. She tried to save it with some light, attractive styling, but it just didn’t work. HATED it. Ugh. It was like she watched American Hustle and thought, “I could do THAT.” Also: I love that Julia keeps losing. But I’ll give her some credit: she’s a gracious loser, for real. She manages to look genuinely happy when Lupita wins. I think Julia will be fine if she loses to Lupita. Julia will not be fine if she loses to Jennifer Lawrence.

And once again, I loved another Oprah look at an awards show. Whoever’s styling Oprah these days is doing a bang-up job, right? Oprah wore this rich purple Badgley Mischka gown which flattered her figure really well. I loved the gigantic brooch too.

And here’s a little Liza Minnelli, just because. It was like she needed people to carry her in.

Another abomination chosen by JR – she needs to take a page from the Oprah handbooks and PAY A STYLIST to make you look good.

    • gefeylich says:

Exactly, but I also think this is a willful “I don’t give a fuck, ALL RIGHT?” from Roberts. She’s above it all, you know – so “beloved” and “revered” that she can show up anywhere looking like a rat’s ass and it will not “dim her light.” Actually, that’s Cate Blanchett, Julia, but no matter.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Presumably she has access to any designer or could spend any amount of money. This looks like it came from Old Navy. Maybe a belt would have helped?

  2. Stef Leppard says:

Julia’s dress would’ve been 1,000 times better if it wasn’t that hideous pink color!

  3. eliza says:

That jumpsuit needs thrown back into the dumpster it was fished out of.

    • Decloo says:

I don’t think it can be termed a “jumpsuit” unless it has short pants.

    • i says:

That jumpsuit reminds me of Gumby. Sure that dates me but the suit has the same effect on Julia. Also there’s something very wrong with the crotch tailoring.

  4. Tiffany says:

Also something else I did not like about Julia Roberts, as how everyone’s moment managed to be about her. She might as well have pushed The Streep out of the way when they were introducing their film. Gracious loser or not she knows how to play it.

    • lisa2 says:

I saw that too. And Merly looked a bit..WTF are you doing. She was ridiculous doing that. Trying to hog the mic and she kind of shaded Meryl for her mistake.

      • Kellie says:

Also, wasnt Julia the first idiot of the night to say “playback” when the film clip was meant to play?
        I was like-WHAT?
        Even I would know better.

    • lucy2 says:

I noticed it as well, she kept pushing her way into the middle even though they were supposed to be sharing the space. It seemed like she kept expecting Meryl to take a step back, but she didn’t.

  5. Lindy79 says:

I liked the idea of julias outfit but saw some side angle pictures and it wasn’t great. Its not structured at all.

  6. TheCountess says:

I just can’t fathom wanting to wear a jumpsuit to a red carpet event. The logistics of a trip to the ladies room alone would be reason enough to stay away.

I might hate it less in black, but that pink is horrid.

  7. Marianne says:

I saw pics of Julia Roberts on Wireimage, and I honestly didnt even realize it was a jumpsuit. I figured it was a Pink dress with a split in it. I actually thought it was an improvement…but now Im not so sure.

  8. bns says:

Best she’s looked all season, but that’s not saying much.

  9. LaurieH says:

The only excuse I can conjure up for Julia Robert’s Pepto-Bismol jumpsuit is that she hopped into Valentino’s time machine, set the clock back 40 years and hopped out thinking she was at Studio 54. Oh look! Oprah is wearing the color purple. Actually, the color is nice on her, the dress is flattering for her figure, but it is ill-fitting. The sleeves are entirely too big and long. And she needs to lose the broach; it cheapens the dress. She also needs to wear a better bra. And then there is Liza who, in my book, can simply do no wrong.

  10. Renee says:

I like he detailing at the top of Julia’s jumpsuit but it was not flattering around her hips and the color did absolutely nothing for her. I think that Oprah looks nice but she needs to do something different with her hair. Something random, I also like that Oprah has never had plastic surgery.

  11. Audrey says:

That’s just not at all flattering on her.

She could do much better, she’s a pretty woman with a great body. Hope her Oscar loook is better

  12. T. Fanty Fan says:

Pepto Bismal pink is not a color any adult should wear

  13. Frida_K says:

Oprah looks beautiful in the farther-away photo but up close it is clear that she needs better foundation garments. She is a bustiferous woman and she needs support.

Even so, the color is truly beautiful on her and she certainly does look luxurious in it, so aside from the one quibble, I vote “yes” on her ensemble.

Julia’s, on the other hand…it earns a big old “no bueno.”

  14. Kiddo says:

I thought Julia’s outfit looked good from the front, but like someone said above, I don’t love the pink. I like the color of Oprah’s dress on her, but I feel like the cut made her arms look bizarre and the asymmetrical top portion either accentuated a disproportionate breast area, or it created that effect. Don’t love it.

    How old is Liza?

  15. Granger says:

    No, no, no, no, no.

  16. Zara says:

Julia is gorgeous and she was awesome in August: Osage County.

    • PHD Gossip says:

Thank you employee/agent/hanger-on on Julia’s payroll.

      • Marianne says:

Or they could have actually liked her in A:OS. I did too.

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah. I’m not a huge fan, but she has been good in some films. I haven’t seen the latest, but I’m a bit clueless on the relentless vitriol.

      • Zara says:

I am not an employee or an agent or whatever. I liked her in August: Osage County and I think she is pretty. What’s wrong with that?

  17. MollyB says:

    She has VERTIGO!

  18. A Mascarada says:

Oprah looks great. Roberts… no comment.

  19. anon says:

I do not like Julia Roberts or Oprah, but I do like both of their outfits; they both look great.
Julia, FYI: you’re not America’s sweetheart.
Oprah, FYI: you are not God!

  20. enya z. says:

If you look at that facing-front, spread-legged pic of Julia and scroll your screen so that her feet are hidden, she appears to be wearing a dress and oblivious of the fact that part of her body is missing.

  21. Sprink says:

See, here’s what happened with Julia’s jumpsuit: she (rightly) fell in love with the absolute AWESOMENESS of the flared legs, which will flatter and instantly cool up any woman. Unfortunately, doing so caused her to turn blind from the top up.

I would have LOVED for her to go full American Hustle and actually wear a Halston halter style a la Lauren Hutton. That would’ve been far more interesting.

  22. Nicolette says:

No, no, no on all three.

  23. floretta50 says:

JR has alll that money to be able to look stunning and comes out looking like a dish rag.

  24. Christin says:

The question remains – Does JR have a stylist? I’m starting to think she has a team of stylists, namely her children. I could see a little girl or boy picking out some of the looks she’s worn lately. That would actually be kind of sweet. However, I think reality is she’s just style challenged.

  25. MrsBPitt says:

Yuck, yuck and yuck…that is all!

  26. Christo says:

Honestly, I don’t hate it, but perhaps that is because I am comparing it to all the 80’s sofa/couch patterns that have predominated her wardrobe as of late. In other words, it is nice to see a solid color on her. Additionally, it is great to not see the same iteration of the Diane Keaton-esque/Mens Dress shirt rip-off that she has been wearing for the past 5 years. With all this being said, it looks like she was a character in American Hustle.

  27. J.Lee says:

Julia your colors are blush & bashful! The color is way too precious. Cream or white & I would have loved it.

    • gabby says:

Ha blush and bashful agreed. Honestly, I saw the headline of jumpsuit and thought ugh, but it actually doesn’t look as bad as it could have been.

  28. Hootysgram says:

Julia’s outfit looks like its smack out of the 70’s Dull. Unimpressive. Oprah looks like Oprah only not photo-shopped like normal on her magazine covers. Nipples showing…not a good look. She doesn’t need to care…she’s got more money than all those celebs. Has anyone else noticed she now has fingernails…which appear fake…but still…she never did all those years on her talk show. Wonder what changed in her life…that she suddenly went that route…plus she wears rings now. What-up Oprah?

  29. shellybean says:

I don’t think it’s that the jumpsuit is unflattering on her figure. I think it’s that it’s PINK BUBBLEGUM. And a jumpsuit. I do think her hair and makeup looked great, though.

  30. Josephine says:

Julia keeps choosing things that make her look thick through the waist. She has always been thick through the waist, but why emphasize it? This one comes with the bonus of making her breasts look waaaay too low. The combination screams matronly. I just don’t get it. I loathe the color as well, but that’s the least of it.

  31. Megan says:

there is not a single positive thing to say about Julia Robert’s outfit. Not a single nice thing to say.

She does seem genuinely happy for Lupita, and I frankly can’t blame her if she doesn’t like JLaw. JLaw is basically Julia Roberts- extremely overrated, and can really only play one character. However, I don’t’ think JLaw has a chance. I think this is Lupita’s and I am thrilled.

    • JessMa says:

One role?!? Compare her in Winter’s Bone vs AH or Hunger Games vs SLP. She has amazing range. Julia can also switch it up. Look at Pretty Woman and then watch Closer.

  32. Jmo says:

Oprah’s hair is magnificent! Needs a post devoted to it exclusively!

  33. Az says:

Oh Julia. My main concern with that outfit is the stripper heels. Julia CANNOT walk in heels. Remember that scene in Oceans 11 when she is supposed to glide in and instead clomps around like a baby giraffe? Bless her heart. And I LOVE Julia. But this is just a big no-no. I agree that whoever is styling Oprah is doing really, really well especially the color choices. Those deep jewel tones are just fantastic and I covet that brooch. You know what? Melissa McCarthy should talk to Oprah’s stylist!

  34. Zigggy says:

    Pink Gumby.

  35. Julia says:

The jumpsuit is hideous. O looks regal in the purple.

  36. Reece says:

The stands didn’t like it either they collapsed when she walked by. HA

  37. Carol says:

Yeah, total Pink Gumby! I thought the color was nice though. Liza looked great but poor thing is channeling major Judy Garland.

  38. StepfordWifeNot says:

I think Oprah looks like a badly-stuffed sofa – it’s a beautiful gown, but it certainly does not flatter her. She needs something with more structure like the dark green gown she wore recently.

  39. Dorothy says:

She looks beautiful! Also is very introspective and intelligent and most of all a real Mom. Heard it was Paltrow slamming her to everyone in LA (just another sicko attempt to get in with LA Mom’s) that is part of the reason that GOOP is further disliked and that caused Julia to (with priorities on kids still first) get back into acting. She and other actresses (about 90%) loathe Paltrow and her ego! Julia could be bratty when she was much younger but she has matured. She is also very shy and that can make her appear very standoffish – she isn’t – she is actually quite real. That is why she didn’t marry for PR and raised her kids away from the business in the early years – and not like some phonies who claim to do that but are still focusing on career and image, making money other ways etc. not kids.

  40. Velvet Elvis says:

Look at Julia Roberts wearing an ugly ass jumpsuit. Now look closer. Do you see her look of give a fuck?

  41. watchmaker says:

JR looks like a clown on stilts….

  42. JenniferJustice says:

Roberts does so care about how she looks, but she knows she can’t pull it off, so saying she doesn’t care and is above it all, is just a protective front so when she does fail, people will think it’s because she didn’t try. She tries, but she fails. She’s built odd – rather wide and flat. She needs to train and drop a few inches from her waiste and everything she wears would look 100% better. What she doesn’t care about is being fit. She should take a lesson from Cate Blanchet. Cate is elegant, beautiful, and classy and fit without looking skeletal.

  43. tealily says:

Who was saying they thought Julia got new boobs? I think Julia got new boobs.
