Scarlett Johansson’s new gig: ‘I have been pushing SodaStream to my family for years’

This ^^ is a photo of Scarlett Johansson at a big announcement event on behalf of SodaStream. She’s the new brand ambassador for SodaStream, and they did a photocall and ScarJo is giving interviews on behalf of her new gig. Unfortunately for all involved, SodaStream rolled this out in the middle of Golden Globes weekend, when there were a million new photos to cover, so “ScarJo’s New Job!” got buried.

Luckily, ScarJo sat down for an infomercial-type interview with People Magazine to promote her gig. I’ll get to that in a moment, but I’d just like to take a moment to point out again that Scarlett is more model than actress these days – she’s the “brand ambassador” or “face of” so many brands, I’ve lost count. I guess her strategy is to pay her bills with all of her modeling gigs and then she gets to make small, important films (in between Marvel adventures). It’s not a bad strategy at all, it’s just that Scarlett is EVERYWHERE in advertising, so seeing her endorse SodaStream is just like, “Ugh, on top of everything else?”

In the Oscar-nominated film Her, Scarlett Johansson plays the voice of a complex operating system that falls in love with a man. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the husky-voiced actress is speaking out about her French fiancé, Romain Dauriac.

“I’m very happy,” Johansson, 29, says about Dauriac, 31, a journalist who manages a creative agency, in the new issue of PEOPLE. “He’s my buddy.”

The couple, who got engaged last August, do not want to “rush through it” and plan to take their time in planning a wedding. “Being engaged is an exciting time to enjoy and to really savor,” she says.

In the meantime, Johansson, who is the new Global Brand Ambassador for SodaStream, stars in a Super Bowl commercial for the bubbly beverage maker on Feb. 2.

“I have been pushing SodaStream to my family for years. I buy it for my friends as housewarming gifts and I have it everywhere I go,” she says. “When I film I have it in my trailer and they outfit the whole craft service table with it. I have it everywhere just because I love it so much.”

Johansson, an avid cook, even makes tasty meals at home to go along with her carbonated drinks.

“I cook, but I’m no pro,” she admits. “I was making a white chicken chili and I had to let it reduce for a little while, so I was like, ‘Let’s go build a snowman while we wait.’ I got a little carried away … Three hours later, I was like, ‘Oh no, the chili!’ I went back inside and the house was covered in smoke. A pro would have not made that mistake. Make sure to check every five minutes if you are reducing something!”

[From People]

I like the feigned ingenuity of burying the infomercial within an article where she also talks a little bit about her wedding plans and cooking skills. Remember that when Scarlett complains about people wanting to know about her personal life – she’s perfectly willing to discuss her personal life as a quid-pro-quo to promote her endorsement deals.

As for the details about cooking… I enjoy cooking, but I’m not a marathon cooker. If it takes longer than 20 minutes to prepare, I’m not making it. That’s the secret to not burning food – know when to fold ‘em and walk away. I do wonder if Scarlett felt the need to talk about cooking because… well… her ex-husband’s new wife is ALL ABOUT cooking and baking. Am I making an unnecessary connection?

As for the wedding plans or lack there of… God knows. I think that either Romain and Scarlett will never end up marrying, or they’ll do it in a really low-key, secretive way. I’m also including this hilarious photo of Romain from just last night, at the Sidaction Gala in Paris. He was seated next to Chloe Sevigny!!! I bet Chloe gave him an earful about everything.

    Chloe has the glossiest hair.

  2. Anna says:

    Romain? Pronounced like the lettuce?

    Oh God..

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

Please ! Romain is an ancient french name like Marcel or George

    • Skye says:

It’s French so the -main part is more like a short “e” sound in English, and you wouldn’t really hear the “n”. If I remember right. (Madame Fernandez would be so proud. Unless she’s morte.)

  3. Jegede says:

Mango, D&G, Moet and Chandon, and now Soda Stream.
Good for Scarlett but I find it tiresome how she goes on about her artistry, the market corners creativity and all her pretension while taking endorsement deals by the bucket.
Same as her “don’t call me sexy schtick” while posing for men’s mags
And I agree they won’t get married.
Like Kate Hudson, Amy Adams, Jennifer Hudson they’ll stay engaged and then eventually call it off.

  4. Kate says:

What the heck is soda stream?

    • FingerBinger says:

A machine that turns water into soda or sparkling water. I have one and I love it.

      • Macey says:

How is it for making diet soda? I am a diet pepsi ADDICT, must have at least 1 or 2 a day. I dont really like other sodas tho, except maybe a regular Coke when Im sick in stomach but thats about it. Just wondering how the flavoring is and if the taste resembles Coke or Pepsi.

      • Audrey says:

I love mine too! Macey – they sell “diet soda” flavor packets, but I don’t get them. I just squeeze some fresh lemon or lime in a bottle with carbonated water and I’m set. I have saved SO MUCH money by switching from La Croix to Soda Stream. It’s awesome. But I’m not a fan of ScarJo, among other things, her feet always look pidgeon-toed to me

      • FingerBinger says:

@Macey The cola tastes like Coke to me. I find Pepsi sweeter than Coke so I use a little more syrup to get that Pepsi sweetness. The regular syrups use splenda as their sweetener so they are pretty low in calories anyway, but they do have diet versions of all their sodas,(grapefruit, root beer, etc.). They also have syrup that’s like coke zero too.

      • gg says:

I shun sodas because of the sugar and acid and can’t handle fake sweeteners, but love, love sparkling water. Everyone I know that has one adores it and I’ve only been putting off buying one because of the counterspace it takes up. It’s pretty tall. When I redo my kitchen this year I will buy one. Unfortunately the price has not decreased any the more it’s become popular.

    • Decloo says:

I’ve been using Soda Stream for years and I think it’s fab. That’s why I was very distressed to learn recently that it’s an Israeli company with its primary factory in the West Bank. It’s hard for me to give money to a company that is based in a disputed territory. Nobody should be making money on the backs of refugees.

      • Jenna says:

If it helps any, if you don’t want to keep paying cash out to the company for the tank refills (for any reason – either ethical or you are like me and just too dang cheap to constantly have to mail canisters back for refills that are almost as expensive as simply buying soda in the can) and already HAVE the tanks, long as you don’t car about voiding the warranty, it’s actually a pretty easy job to hack the machine. Costs about $70 in extra parts, but now when we need refills, it’s only $5 at our local sporting goods stores, and the canisters last more than 4x as long as the ‘proper’ jobbies. The $70 pays for a new rigging as well as a few tanks to own that are just pressurized tanks for paintball. And considering how bad my husband and I’s sinuses are, and how something fizzy first thing in the morning is more vital then caffeine for us, it has been a huge savings over time!

Heck. Forget over time, we made the money back in 6 weeks after ‘jailbreaking’ the gadget!

      • Lady says:

I heard this too & it turned me off. It’s a shame.

  5. Mia4S says:

Yeah she’s going the Clooney route of commercial endorsements to pay the lifestyle so you can do IMPORTANT films. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s also pretty clear that the story about her getting a $20 million deal from Marvel was crap. A PR move there or wishful thinking?

    • ctkat1 says:

I’ve heard from multiple sites/sources that Marvel doesn’t pay actors much (unless you’re Robert Downey Jr., in which case you get $50+ million). That was rumored to be why Chris Hemsworth didn’t do much press for Thor 2, because he was unhappy with the negotiations with Marvel.
I think that her original Marvel contract was a pittance- $800k, maybe? She’s signed a multi-picture deal, but I agree with you that she’s not making RDJ money (or the money that young actors in popular franchises make- the Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games “never have to work again” money).

She’s done a really good job with her endorsements- she’s managed to do a TON of them without necessarily diminishing her appeal as an actress (ie. they don’t make her look so cheesy and downmarket that she’s not still a top tier actress). No doubt the endorsement deals are the bulk of her income.

  6. itstrue says:

I don’t really get the Soda Stream. I don’t get excited about sugary or bubbly drinks though. Water is more palatable to me. It seems odd that in an era when people are being pushed to stop with the sugary drinks that this product is doing well. It seems like an idea whose time has passed.

    • Algernon says:

Can you control the amount of sugar going into the drink? For instance, could you tell your kids they’re having soda when really you’ve only put a fraction of the sugar in it? Maybe that’s why it’s doing well? It’s a slightly-healthier alternative to canned pop?

      • paranormalgirl says:

You have options: regular soda syrups with cane sugar, syrups with a mixture of sugar and sweeteners, diet sodas, diet “juice” blends, water flavors, etc, or you can just carbonate the water and add a bit of real fruit juice and a squeeze of lemon or lime.

I usually carbonate and use this blood orange flavored agave nectar for a little taste and sweetness.

      • Algernon says:

Oh my god that sounds good. I drink way too much sugary crap. I shall have to investigate this machine.

      • littlestar says:

A cheaper option is to just buy club soda/carbonated water and add your own juice to it :). That’s what I do occasionally.

    • gg says:

A lot of people just buy it to have way cheaper bubbly water, if you’re into that.

    • wendy says:

I hate drinking flat water but love sparkling water!
I bought a soda stream and don’t add anything at all sometimes. Other times just lemon. It turns boring flat water to exciting bubbly water. Super satisfying.
I drink wayyy more water now. So good!
The syrups suck big time. gross
But a friend of mine always makes cocktails on Friday nights and she uses her soda stream to make fun drinks.

    • mcsandwich says:

“Soda” is misleading. It’s soda, as in soda water aka sparkling water. You can add flavor packets or something, I’ve never done that, but it’s just a means to turn tap water into sparkling water. I love my soda stream.

    • Decloo says:

I assumed that most people use it as I do which is to make bubbly water in place of having to buy club soda or seltzer. It saves money and also means fewer plastic bottles in the world. Plus, no lugging those heavy bottles home from the grocery store. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who uses the flavored packets.

    • lrm says:

yea, that’s what I do for my kids =and myself! Just carbonated water and juice. Sometimes, I will use honey or maple syrup, grated ginger, fresh lemon juice-let it steep for a few minutes, then strain and add to sparkling water…so easy and my child actually asks for it [at 13 years old-ha!]

the machine does sound cool-but hearing you need replacement filters, etc? Naw, I’ll stick with juice and sparkling if I want soda…

    • Rufus says:

+ their factory is in the West Bank and I think it is immoral to promote a product that has been made in a disputed (colonized) area, where people have different rights dpending on their ethnicity.. a shame.. anyway, SJ means nothing to me when it comes to artistic talent..

  7. QQ says:

Word is this guy is like Anne Hathaway Ex level shady x2 with actually dangerous stuff going on but that she either doesn’t know or knows and doesn’t care

  8. blue marie says:

    Well isn’t she just smug-fancy.

  9. Jackson says:

She’s been looking a lot better lately. Lighter makeup, maybe? Tweaked a bit? Lost some weight? Maybe all of the above? Whatever it is, she’s looking very bright and light and pretty again.

  10. Algernon says:

I actually think her business approach is smart. It can get tiring seeing her in ads all the time (the same goes for Keira Knightley, Emma Watson and many others), but it does free her from having to make movies *just* for money. Also, many of her endorsements are high-end luxury brands, like Moet & Chandon and Louis Vuitton, so even with all the ads, people who don’t read high fashion magazines/live on the internet probably aren’t even aware of those ads, which keeps her saturation level down with the general public.

If I was an actress I would totally want a handful of cushy, long-term endorsement deals to pad the bank account so I wouldn’t have to worry about my next paycheck coming from an acting gig. I’d want to be able to pick my projects based on passion and interest, not because I want to renovate my kitchen.

I also don’t know if it’s fair to call her “more model than actress”. She had two movies in 2012, two in 2013, and 3-4 scheduled for this year, but Avengers 2 next year, at least. She’s working a lot, and with good people in generally good movies. When I think of “more model than actress” I think of people like Jessica Alba and, well, Blake Lively.

    • Gwen says:

I agree. It’s not cheap brands she’s promoting so compared to many others she’s still keeping it classy. The comparison with Cloony fits well IMO.

      Also I love our Sodastream.

      • Mia4S says:

Sodastream, classy? According to the NY Times story below, definitely not! (Thank you for that link) Oxfam should drop her as an ambassador if this is true. Disappointing but not surprising, she’s not unique in her ignorance, whether wilfully or just unaware. Money over principles.

  11. Diana says:

Heard a lot of criticism about her endorsing this company…

  12. Rachel says:

Does anyone else think it’s weird that she refers to her fiance as “her buddy”? I can see calling my SO my best friend or something like that, but “your buddy” is what you call that friend you know wants to be more than friends, but you’re not interested, so you take every opportunity to point out that you will never be more than just friends.

  13. littlestar says:

She’s endorsing Soda Stream? That is beyond odd. I thought something like that would be beneath her.

  14. Nene says:

She is looking good lately like during the time of the famous red dress.
The weight loss did her a lot of good. She has one of the best pouts on a celeb.

If I were an actress I’d also do exactly what she is doin’ if given the offer. It’s a great business strategy.

  15. megsie says:

I don’t drink soda, but it is an interesting product. She’s getting a lot of flack over this though. With the manufacturing plant in the occupied West Bank, I’m not surprised.

  16. Jarredsgirl says:

Can’t believe anyone would promote a soft drink maker, knowing how bad carbonated drinks are for you…

I also get a vibe from her “buddy”. I don’t buy them as a real couple.

  17. Claudia says:

It’s kind of weird for someone who’s into progressive causes (the environment) to be supporting an unethical product like this. As others have said, Sodastream is manufactured on stolen/occupied territory in the Palestinian West Bank.

  18. jwoolman says:

In the first half of the 20th Century, people had seltzer bottles delivered so they could make their own sparkling water. That’s why you see people getting spritzed from a seltzer bottle so often in the old comedies. It was a common household item.

  19. I like reading through an article that will make people think.

Also, thanks for permitting me to comment!
