Amy Adams in navy Gucci at the Oscars: killer or underwhelming?

The 86th Annual Oscars Arrivals
Amy Adams was one of the most gracious losers at last night’s Oscar awards, along with Sandra Bullock. I have to give it to Amy especially, she looked genuinely pleased when Cate Blanchett took home the Best Actress statue, when she was passed up by the Academy for the fifth time. Amy’s film, American Hustle, didn’t win in a single category. This wasn’t Amy’s year, but like DiCaprio she will get her day eventually, I’m sure of it.

Sartorially, this wasn’t Amy’s year either. She wore this strapless navy blue Gucci Premiere gown that fit her perfectly but was underwhelming. It was a lovely gown but Amy didn’t bring the glamour with her dress or styling, and that seems to have been her intent. While interviewed on the red carpet, Amy emphasized that she wanted to be true to herself with her fashion, saying that the dress “felt like me.” Maybe she needs to feel sexier. She certainly oozed appeal in American Hustle. Her styling could be throwing me off, too. This dress would have a different personality if she’d had long, loose hair. That style is too severe. I do like that she went with simple, bold jewelry.

For the Vanity Fair Oscar party, Amy wore this single shoulder white gown with a straight full skirt. (I don’t have a designer ID for it yet.) She showed more skin and took more of a risk, and it shows. This is a perfect party dress, While I like this better than her Oscars gown I don’t think that she could have switched the two at all.

I love the color of Amy’s red carpet dress, and the fit looks great, but otherwise it’s very underwhelming. To be honest I thought that most of the fashion was kinda meh, borderline boring. I miss the days where there’d be at least one gasp out loud, wtf is she wearing kind of moment.

    • LadySlippers says:

@LadyMTL: I thought the lack of statement jewelry brought this down a bit. All she needed to make this a grand slam ensemble was blingier earrings and bracelet. Plus I would have liked to have seen a slightly bolder lip on Amy. Those two modifications would have boosted her look a ton.

      • Kiddo says:

I think she looks gorgeous, but a necklace would have added to the look, maybe something bold, like the red color in her earrings, rather than sparkly jewels.

      • Ray says:

That, and loose long hair. That updo was too yawn. I would have loved to have seen her pay homage to her character on AH she loomed beautiful throughout that whole movie

      • Decloo says:

She told one interviewer that she wore her hair up because of the rain.I guess she gets the frizzies.

    • Tapioca says:

She did navy in 2011, with a skin-tight, high-neck, cap-sleeve sparkly number with loose hair and a massive emerald necklace and it was my favourite outfit of that year.

It was all a bit underwhelming this year – they must invite Cher or Celine Dion or Bjork again!

      • Chinoiserie says:

That dress is one of my favorite Oscar dresses ever, slightly different and so gorgeous. This dress in comparison is much more plain. I hope that if she is once the favorite to win something she will wear something really stunning. But she said that she has not felt like herself before in her dresses so maybe this really is her, and it seems to suit her personality if not the event.

      • Kiddo says:

@Chinoiserie, She looked confident and not awkward at all in this dress, which translates a lot better than a design for design’s sake. I think that’s why I like this look so much.

    • Aura says:

I thought this dress screamed that she knew she wasn’t going to win… Would this be the dress you chose to be remembered by for all eternity?!

    • QQ says:

Yeah There was no *Gasp!*moment at all this year! AmyAdamsIslaFisherjessicaChastain was pretty sedate and Boring, not on Nominee status, More like presenter steeze

  2. Tanguerita says:

I really liked her dress – perfect fit, lovely colour and it suited her very well.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Me too. But I love her so much she could have worn anything and I would like it.

  3. Kristen says:

Pretty but boring dress, bad hair (her hair is like an amazing free gorgeous accessory when she wears it all down and Veronica Lake), FANTASTIC EARRINGS.

  4. smee says:

AA looks divine in that dress! Navy blue is totally her color. It fits her perfectly and she has an amazing figure. The hair is a bit severe.

But she should NEVER wear a white toga dress again tho……….

    • danielle says:

I REALLY don’t understand the trend of changing for the after party. Isn’t it enough to wear one beautiful look in a night?

      • Decloo says:

I agree. This seems really narcissistic, especially when you are not a nominee or a winner. I get that this just puts you in more photos and showcases TWO designers but it’s not like we haven’t already been bombarded with red carpets.

  5. Deb says:

    *meh*

    • emmie_a says:

I agree. It’s not bad but not good either.

I don’t like her after party dress at all. She needs some color.

  6. Lily says:

I like the dress and this is Amy’s style. Beautiful but not overwhelming and she looks comfortable.

  7. nancypants says:

I really like Amy and I think she will have her moment.

I like the dress and I think she looks wonderful in it but it’s just a little….bland for the occasion.
I think she could have used just a little SOMETHING like a great necklace and earrings or SOMETHING.

BTW, I hate most red and pink dresses on the red carpet.
Just because you look awesome in red in or pink doesn’t mean you will look awesome in red or pink on a red carpet.

  8. paola says:

I just hope Amy will eventually get her very much deserved Oscar. Hopefully in a better role.. American Hustle was too much overacted in my opinion and too much overrated.

  9. Lucy2 says:

I loved this dress, I thought it was very elegant and modern. The color is excellent on her, but I think I would have gone for looser hair.

    • Kate says:

The weather was terrible last night in LA. That’s why her hair is up……she said so on the red carpet.

  10. blue marie says:

The dress, yes but the hair is a no. And the after Oscar dress is horrible.

  11. chloe says:

I liked the dress but she needed some bling. I didn’t like her hair pulled up like that either.

  12. Serene says:

I like this dress. Love the color and the fit on her is perfect (take note Anne Hathaway, ye of pink nipple darts)

I think blinging it up would have made this look better.

  13. I LOVED the dress, and her hair. This is my style–very simple. The color was amazing–she looked great. I love Amy so much.

I’m glad she didn’t win for American Hustle though–but still. I’d rather be nearly forty with four nominations and people WANTING me to win.

    • Lucy2 says:

I think that was her fifth nomination. She’s going to win sooner or later. I thought she was really great in AH, but in every category that movie had competition that clearly deserved to win. I do kind of wish they had one for costumes though.

  14. Kate says:

You have to show more skin to me sexy ? Ummm…well that’s a fairly crappy message to send. Good grief.

I love the navy gown. It fits her like a glove. When you have a naturally gorgeous body like that you don’t need a ton of other stuff.

There is such a thing a timeless elegance, people.

  15. Hubbahun says:

Love her and she was robbed. Robbed, I tell you!

  16. Tx says:

Can a look be both killer and underwhelming? She looks amazing, but it just wasn’t OSCAR worthy.

  17. Curious Cole says:

Sophisticated elegance, I love that Amy styled herself, although perhaps with different/more jewels I would deem it perfection. She’s turning into Meryl = always nominated, never/rarely winning. Always gracious though.

  18. Mrs. Darcy says:

Oh Amy. Her dress photographs exceedingly dull but fits perfectly and she probably looked better in person. The folds are kind of napkin-y to me, not loving it or the lack of necklace. The earrings are ghastly and the hair matron city. I feel like she doesn’t make the most of her colouring. With her red hair a green or gold dress would have looked amazing, duh. She shouldn’t be bragging about not having a stylist, it shows, in a bad way. I do really like her though and hope she wins someday.

  19. L says:

I thought she looked STUNNING. She was my favorite look of the evening. She also said she had fired her stylist and had styled herself for both looks-and I think it shows (esp compared to all the other crap she’s worn this awards season) For someone who knew she was just there to present, to smile, and knew she wasn’t going to win-it was a great look.

And she had the good sense to wear her hair up in that humid weather. It looked pulled together and perfect.

    • Shannon1972 says:

Thank god she dumped Valentino after that awful handbag episode. Maybe the stylist had something to do with that mess, so Amy had to style herself and find a gown on short notice. Not easy to do!! Gucci probably had to throw something together for her…Oscar gowns usually take months.
Considering the panic that likely took place behind the scenes, I thought she looked beautiful. That blue is absolutely perfect on her.

  20. magpie says:

Dress was very classy, but could have used some bling around the neck. Love Amy, her day will come.

  21. Val says:

    Boring.

  22. Ice Queen says:

I loved the Oscar dress more.

  23. Tiffany says:

I glad she was in a dress she could dance in with Pharell. She was so adorable.

  24. Merritt says:

I love Amy Adams, but I’m glad American Hustle didn’t win. David O Russell is a creeper. Just look up the reports about the time he groped his niece. But of course he didn’t get charged, these guys never do.

  25. Diana says:

I thought the dress was beautiful but the styling just didn’t cut it. She was lovely though.

  26. Samtha says:

She was my best dressed. A little more jewelry, maybe, but the color and fit of that dress was just divine.

  27. shellybean says:

I love Amy Adams, and I think she always looks flawless. The dress is kind of boring, but it fits her beautifully, the color is so flattering on her, and she looks so elegant, so I can’t really even find fault with the fact that it’s on the safe side. She is just always a class act. I can’t wait for the day when she finally wins her much-deserved Oscar.

  28. taxi says:

The Oscar dress is killer on her! Take note, all you sternum-rib-stomach baring women. This is what classy looks like!
I wish the updo had been a bit looser & either a necklace or blingier earrings would have amped up the look. Maybe the red earrings are great irl but more sparkle or bold gold would help.
The less said about the white grecian chorus look, the better. Amy: Do not wear white!

  29. Nina says:

Love this dress- classic and elegant and it fit her perfectly. She looks lovely and always seems the epitome of grace. She was fantastic in AH and I think, maybe better than cate, who had a far meatier and flamboyant role.

  30. Kosmos says:

The Blue Oscar dress looked great on her, but my only negative was her HAIR……she needed some softness and she looks so fab with her hair down and flowing, it would have just made the look a bit more perfect. With her hair up like this, it just didn’t give her quite the edge…..otherwise, it was stunning.
