Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen at the Oscars: regal or over the top?

The 86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals C

Last night, when Gravity was taking home technical award after technical award, the camera kept panning to Sandra Bullock. Bullock looked choked up every time, and she looked like she was savoring the moment. The speeches from the people who worked on that film were some of the most moving, too. You could tell that the crew had a strong sense of camaraderie and that they truly enjoyed the work. It seemed strange to me, though, that George Clooney didn’t bother to attend. Yes the movie was mostly Sandra, but Clooney could have shown up to give his support.

Sandra was in this flowing strapless Alexander McQueen gown which just looked amazing. I love the way the fabric criss-crosses to the side to form that waterfall-like panel across the front. This was one of the best looks of the night, in my opinion. Coupled with Sandra’s amazing styling this was a home run. She had old Hollywood sideswept curls, a smokey eye and peachy cheeks and lips. She was tastefully decked out in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds, including a huge brooch-like earring on her left side and a stunning bracelet. This was perfection.

Sandra won the Best Actress Oscar in 2010 for The Blind Side. Her marriage imploded soon afterwards. I thought of that a few times when I saw her last night, and I thought of how expertly she distanced herself from that mess. It’s been four years and it may seem like a lifetime to Sandra. She didn’t let any grass grow under her feet after that debacle, that’s for sure. Look at her now. She’s 49 years old and on the top of her game.

  1. Marianne says:

Sandra was one of my favourite looks of the night.

    • Anna says:

For me it’s a tie between her and Amy Adams – the latter for finally finding something that fits, and styling it properly.

      • FLORC says:

Amy is finally coming into her style and it’s awesome.

Sandra was one of my tops for the night.

    • Crank says:

She was my favorite…it was so great to see all of the Gravity speeches. It’s such a good film and you can tell it was made with such care. Deserving of all its technical awards…I kind of wish it would have surprised with the best picture win, but I’m so happy for the director.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

She looked good, but I really dislike these satin strapless dresses. Weren’t there at least 3 other women who wore something similar?

    • Decloo says:

      B-O-R-I-N-G!

    • Zimmer says:

May I say she looked out-of- this world?

  2. Audrey says:

She was one of my best dressed. Love her and she looked amazing

    • Nicolette says:

Mine too. The hair, the make up, the gown, and those stunning earrings were all done to perfection. Gorgeous!!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree with both of you. She was perfectly beautiful.

    • LadySlippers says:

Agreed. Sandra looked like pure perfection.

    • NYC_girl says:

I’ve always loved her. I wish I could be her friend – she seems so awesome! I love the color of the dress.

  3. Lucy2 says:

Amazing all around- she looked perfect.

  4. chloe says:

She was one of my favorites from last night, she looked like old Hollywood glamour. I finally viewed Gravity and I loved it and thought she was great in it and I really enjoyed the movie, I felt it was well deserving of all it’s wins.

  5. len says:

I think I might be giving her best dressed. Which is kind of disappointing…that it didnt get better than this very beautiful but not very amazing dress.

  6. len says:

By the way: was Nicole Kidman there??

  7. Rhea says:

Normally, I’m not a fan of her RC look because sometimes it’s either blah or meh. But last night she nailed it. Perfection, indeed.

  8. Sisi says:

one of the best dressed. Certainly one of the better colors and the better tailored dress.

  9. Hubbahun says:

Perfection, utter perfection. She was the most beautiful woman there, IMO, even more than JLaw who looked amazing too.

  10. QQ says:

She looked great nothing to like write home about but after that Golden globes Home Ec disaster This was good Really good, The makeup, the hair… She looks like in her late 30s

    • Tulip Garden says:

I really did think she was one of the best-dressed. The more amazing thing to me is as you pointed out, she looks so much younger then her chronological age! Genetics, surgery, clean-living, or Botox, whatever it is she is doing it right 🙂

  11. Ladyray says:

    Sandra looks gorgeous!

I did watch Gravity and unfortunately, hated it. Thought it was very boring and the plot didn’t hold up to me…

  12. Serene says:

Sandra looks fabulous and that gown is gorgeous! Ladies of the Oscar red carpet, take note.

Anyone else here still wishing her and Clooney would hook up in real life?

  13. AG-UK says:

Sandra Bullock looked stunning. Love her anyway but she looked amazing

  14. Sandra looks gorgeous–I love the design of the dress. I sort of wish it had been a deep green or red, but I like the blue/navy. And her hair looks fantabulous. I’m meh on the earrings, I like colored jewels better than diamonds.

  15. blue marie says:

Love the dress, think she looks great in it but I don’t like the hair.

  16. Common Sense says:

Perfection is the right word celebitchy. WOW Sandra looks beautiful! I’d totally wear that dress, don’t know where to but I would wear it.

  17. Mrs. Darcy says:

I think she looks stunning, I love everything, the colour, the drape, the hair, makeup, jewels. Probably my favourite of the night. Cate B. was disappointing to say the least and Lupita’s bones are still giving me nightmares. Sandy looks gorgeous and glowing, thank god she has a little colour on her lips, there were a lot of zombie faces going on.

  18. Micah says:

    Beautiful Gown!

  19. Kiddo says:

It’s not my favorite gown ever, but it’s one of the best that Sandra has worn.

  20. Filmfan says:

Well I know I’m absolutely alone in this but I personally loved, loved Gravity! I don’t know why, I was really moved by it the whole beauty of the film (visually and emotionally). And I loved Sandra Bullock’s performance too, but I agree that the awards went to the right people in the end…No issue with the wins at all.
And I think she’s gorgeous, one of the best she has ever looked…

    • Esti says:

You’re definitely not alone in that — I loved that movie, and obviously most people did considering how much it made and the reviews it got. I was happy she was nominated, but didn’t expect or want her to win.

This is my favorite look of the night for sure. Everything — hair, makeup, jewelry, and the dress — is just perfect.

      • Filmfan says:

Yeah well…I was just surprised at the amount of hate for the film because I thought it was like one of those universally loved movies. If it was released in 2012, it would definitely have been my pick for best picture (over Argo, for SURE).

And I think that Sandy would have been a worthy winner in 2009 if she was nominated for this performance… Anyway, I love her in general.

      • Esti says:

Honestly, I think some of the hate for it here is from people who loved TYAS and didn’t want Gravity to beat it. People seem to feel the need to tear down the competition instead of just loving what they love but acknowledging other things can be good too. (And before anyone says it: I like TYAS quite a bit, and I’m happy it won best picture.)

  21. Christin says:

Stunning look – dress, hair, everything. She hit it out of the park.

  22. queenfreddiemercury says:

I love the color on her. She looks great here.

  23. kibbles says:

She looks great here. She looked great in 2010 when she won an Oscar too. Her dress in 2010 was probably the best Marchesa gown I have ever seen. I still can’t believe Sandra married Jesse James. What a mismatch or else she is very good at masking another side of her personality that found Jesse James and his antics attractive. She was very good a distancing herself from Jesse. If she had played her hand wrong, she could have ended up looking just as bad for marrying a racist.

  24. mar says:

her face was extra botoxy last night. me no likey

  25. Grant says:

Flawless. Just flawless. I love her for so many reasons and it’s so gratifying to see her killing it on the red carpet time and time again. Last night was no exception.

  26. shellybean says:

Sandra looked great in that dress. That color is good on her. I also liked her hair and makeup. What I don’t like, though, is that her face looked really botox-y and tweaked. Makes me sad.

  27. Diana says:

My God, isn’t she positively gorgeous. She was the only one who made me wow’ last night. She looked perfect head to toe. That color is beautiful on her and the styling was on point. I’m glad she looked that good.

  28. Danskins says:

Sandra was definitely my favorite look of the night along with Lupita!

Blue is always such a beautiful color and both ladies rocked/owned their frocks well with their contrasting hues on opposite ends of the spectrum from dark royal to pale light. Classic!

  29. Lucy says:

She looked (and is) beautiful. That shade of blue is just magic.

  30. Maritza says:

    Sheer perfection!

  31. Aria says:

IMO Sandra was THE best dressed. Just perfect. I was a little sad she didn’t win. I mean Cate trully deserved her Oscar but I loved Gravity so much and Sandra was terrific in it.

  32. KateBush says:

Sandra looked amazing, gorgeous dress fitted to perfection. I love the earring too, v unusual. Her makeup and hair are great; there’s no way she looks 49!

  33. Camille (The Original) says:

Sandra looks lovely. And her dress is perfect if a little safe.

I’m so glad Gravity didn’t win best picture. And thank goodness she didn’t win the Oscar, she was one of the weak links in that movie (along with a lack of an actual story line..).

  34. taxi says:

Let’s hope she never returns to the center-part flat-ironed hair she did for so long! Her make up is great here too. The neon magenta lipstick she wore so often for a while was never flattering. Soft hair & soft makeup are terrific on her. I like the style of the dress but there are better colors for her than navy, imo.

  35. Kosmos says:

YESSSSS, she looked stunning!! The dark hair, the jeweled earrings and the dynamite blue elegant dress…..everything looked great on her….well proportioned and perfect…..she’s still America’s Sweetheart….

  36. DoMaJoReMc says:

    SHEER PERFECTION! <3

  37. Vilodemeanus says:

It was one of the best dresses of the night, and she was perfect. I’m so glad she’s gone on from her creepy ex with barely a dent. That in itself was a miracle of strength and savvy.
