GQ calls Theo James the next Robert Pattinson or Leo DiCaprio: really?

Theo James

The Divergent promotion continues without pause. This story won’t be as interesting as a Twilight-slamming, nature weapon-wielding post about Shailene Woodley. She does have a co-star, and his name is Theo James. He plays the Four character and is (potentially) poised for franchise superstardom if the movie does well. I have my doubts that there are enough fans of the series who aren’t upset about the trilogy’s ending. Seriously, the ending is a slap in the face and ruins all three of the books in the space of a few pages. No spoilers.

Theo sat down with GQ to talk about starring as an attractive male character in a young-adult franchise. This is a similar situation as with Sam Claflin, who was cast as Finnick in Catching Fire and quickly realized that “some people get a little obsessed.” Sam had a right to be frightened because the nature of the Finnick character is to draw throngs of adoring fans. The same goes for Robert Pattinson, who couldn’t shoot a non-Twilight movie in NYC without teenage girls chasing the dream of the Byronic Edward Cullen. Kellan Lutz would like to think that Kellan Lutz has the same problem, but Kellan Lutz is deluded.

Will Theo have the same issue with a raging fandom? GQ is betting on it. We already covered GQ’s Theo photoshoot from its March issue, but now they’re releasing more bits and pieces from the interview. The journo dares to title the piece, “Is Theo the next Leo?” LOL:

His own teenage reading material: James, who studied philosophy in college but looks more like a mediterranean shipping heir than a bookish brit, plays a disillusioned badass who helps start an uprising in the dystopic near-future. James admits that he was at first hesitant to do a YA project, though growing up, “I probably pretended I was reading, like, Sartre or something, but it was all Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.”

Soon to be a household name? While he’s starred in a bunch of British TV, James, 29, is not well-known to American audiences apart from a short-lived cbs cop show (not terrible) and a notorious Downton Abbey cameo in which he died having sex with one of the ladies (honestly, just weird). The magnitude by which that’s going to change is silly to speculate about. Maybe in a few months, when Divergent becomes the next Twilight/Hunger Games and theo James the next Rob Pattinson, he will settle into being the kind of person who is photographed at Lakers games wearing beanies and cord necklaces. For the moment, though, there’s a wide-eyed disbelief at the world he now inhabits. Still, he seems to be getting an inkling, warily, of what’s to come. Near the end of our conversation, I asked if he’d seen a montage of his clips someone had strung together scored to “SexyBack.” “That’s hilarious!” he exclaimed, then paused. “Oh f—.”

[From GQ]

The title of the piece is so cheesy and was chosen not only because Leo DiCaprio was a teen idol but because Leo and Theo rhyme. Duh. The RPattz comparison is even more obvious. Summit Entertainment is desperate to draw parallels between its current stars and leading actors of successful YA franchises. That’s why Hollywood Reporter came out swinging last week with an announcement that Shailene is the new Jennifer Lawrence. I think Theo has even less of a chance than Shailene for making such a “prediction” come true. He’s a good looking guy but seems so wooden. Is he dreamy? I don’t see the need for him to worry about throngs of fangirls. But I could be wrong.

He’s definitely attractive and he could be like Pattinson, BUT to say he could be the next Leo? I would have to see his acting in a few various projects before I would ever get close to making that claim. Whether or not people like him, Leo is a good actor and the comparison to him is stupid.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I think he’s hot, hotter than RPattz for sure. But he’s nowhere near Leo’s league when it come’s to acting (or hotness IMO, I know a lot of people don’t find Leo attractive so that’s probably just me.)

    • T.C. says:

100% hotter than Pattinson but no way is he going to reach the same height. Fangirls feel in love with Sparkles because he played Edward a fictional character they feel in love with. Not sure the Divergent fans swoon over Four the same way.

  2. Crank says:

No. Just no. He’s going to be more wooden than Liam Hemsworth and as dull as ever.

    • QQ says:

This! He is basically a cardboard cut out of a “cute boy”

    • Peasantswife says:

Now this dude is hot, forget the Benedict or the Liam, they pale in comparison mmm

      • Crank says:

Oh I’m not denying his hotness, I’m just saying he’s not the next Leo or next huge thing. I kinda have a thing for Leo so I’m slightly biased lol.

    • mom2two says:

I wish magazines would stop comparing people. But you can certainly see the Summit promo monkeys at work here. If I am Theo James, I’d be hoping I’m the next Leo and not the next Pattinson.
He is good looking but he was terrible in that Golden Boy series and I’m not impressed with him in the Divergent trailer either.

    • booboolarue says:

Looks like Ryan Reynolds’s cousin. . . meh.

  3. Original Tessa says:

The whole Twilight thing was like lightning in a bottle. It won’t be repeated. Let Theo be his own person, and leave the total batshit insanity that surrounded the Twilight crew to them.

    • Esmom says:

This is exactly what I was going to say. Trying to force these comparisons is looking increasingly desperate to me.

And this writer? “[He] looks more like a mediterranean shipping heir than a bookish brit…” UGH!

      • Tapioca says:

He looks like the secret love child of Rupert Everett and Ashley Hamilton.

        It’s not just me, right?

    • Kate says:

I was disappointed when Golden Boy was cancelled. Theo James is a handsome, intelligent man with a personality; always chuckle at his sense of humor in interviews. He’s also a musician.

  4. Lark says:

First of all, Sparkles and Theo shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence as Leo. I’m sorry, but no. However….I have a feeling dude is going to blow up (just cool it with the Leo comparisons lol).

I was surprised at how well he came across in an interview I read recently—he’s charming, good looking in an old-school masculine way, and he’s quite educated (went on to Bristol Old Vic after completing university). He has a lead role in a film with Dakota Fanning and Richard Gere, and apparently he’s being courted for a lot of the big movies now….and several of the critics I read said he’s a bright spot in the movies and the women were going nuts for him.

  5. PunkyMomma says:

I thought he was intensely hot in Downton Abbey.

    • Lark says:

I agree, he was good (and smoking hot) as the Turkish guy in Downton Abbey…. He’s a decent actor imo, and apparently has receive decent reviews for most of the work he has done. I like Cumberlizard, Andrew, Fassy, Eddie Redmayne, Hiddles, and co. but it seems like most of the recent British actors are pale, skinny, and look younger than their age (although Hiddles can change his look up). It’s a nice change (at least on the superficial level) for a guy with more typical rugged, dark good looks…..at least to me 😉 I think Gary Carr, the guy who plays the jazz musician on Downton Abbey, is really good too–––be nice if he gets more good work after the show ends.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too, though his character was despicable. I haven’t seen him in anything else.

    • Liv says:

Seriously? I found him so blah in Downton Abbey! Ugh! Buuuut he’s really hot as Four! Can’t wait to see Divergent!

  6. Lilacflowers says:

Theo James will forever be “Poor Mr. Pamuk.”

  7. freebunny says:

Divergent looks bad and he looks bland in the trailer.

  8. Ifhh says:

I don’t see it. They say that about a lot new celebrities.

    • Anname says:

I remember watching an interview with the Vampire Diaires guy before the movie came out, asking if he was ready for “Pattinson-level” fame 🙂

The Twilight thing was unique because it was organic and fan driven. “Theo James as the next Pattinson” is just marketing. If I had to guess I think Theo James will be more popular than Hutchison and Hemsworth, but I don’t see the Pattinson-level craziness happening. That was kind of lightning in a bottle, as someone else said.

  9. freebunny says:

He looks a bit like a Franco lost brother.

  10. maybeiamcrazy says:

Next Rob? Why would any actor would want to be next Rob? And since when Leo and Rob are counted in same category?

    • mia girl says:

Hey! Don’t be mean to Rob! 🙁
Sparkles has tons of money, international fame, women crazy about him and the opportunity to make smaller, more credible films because he has leverage.
Plus, he’s charming, funny and appears to be a decent human being.

An actor could do a lot worse.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

I don’t mean to be mean to Rob. He was in a terrible franchise and he owns it. At least he is self-aware. I just don’t get why an upcoming actor would want to become Rob. Even Rob himself is depressed about it. I like Rob though. He is harmless.:)

      • mia girl says:

I like him too, precilsley because he is more self-aware than most actors with less fame (I’m lookin at you Lutz).

But, point taken about Rob being depressed to be Rob (and about the crappy franchsie). I imagine most actors would not want that side of his fame,
except for maybe some (I’m lookin at you again Lutz).

      • lunchcoma says:

I don’t think you have to be mean to Rob to say that the two men shouldn’t be in the same category. Leo is 15 years further ahead in his career than Rob, and he’s done an extraordinary job of transitioning from teen idol to perpetual Oscar nominee. Rob’s not there yet. Maybe he’ll get there and maybe he won’t, but I don’t think he’s had a long enough career yet for him to be compared to Leo.

      • mia girl says:

@lunchcoma – I was just having some mild fun with @maybeimcrazy’s “who would want to be Rob” comment (who wasn’t really being mean).

I was definitely not referring to Rob and Leo being in the same career category. One would have to be a deluded fan to think so. I like the guy so l’m interested in where his career goes next, but as you said, he and Leo are not even in the same arena.

      • Esmom says:

maybeiamcrazy: “Even Rob himself is depressed about it.” Lol. So true. Love him though.

    • pink says:

      Hahahaha SO TRUE.
Rob and Leo in the same category? Rob wishes lol.

  11. Tig says:

He looks good, tho a bit on the short side. I think the Leo comparisons reflect the “Titanic” era Leo- not where he is now in his career. A bit funny that that the “new” Rob is older than the current one! In any event, would imagine Rob is more than happy to hand off to this new “it” guy, tho his taking off is doubtful. It didn’t happen-at least not yet- for either Max Irons or Douglas Booth, and they were both pitched pretty hard.

    • Esmom says:

I was thinking the same thing, that maybe he was a bit too old to be the new YA idol. Less likely to connect with the teenyboppers. Still smacks of desperation, as someone said above they should just let him be his own person and stop slapping this label on him.

  12. M.A.F. says:

Well, at least he is better looking than RPattz so when he ends up on all of the Sexy lists it would more sense. As for his acting, the only thing I have seen him in is that last Underworld movie so I can’t judge him just yet.

  13. Sarah says:

I have seen his work in a british horror series and the short-lived Golden Boy on CBS and liked him in both. He’s pretty likable and is very good looking. So why not – he could be the next YA heart-throb very easily. As for Leo, well, time can only tell.

  14. Amy Tennant says:

I gasped when I saw him in the trailer. I may not see Divergent, but he is a pretty, pretty man. I didn’t recognize him from Downton Abbey, but he was hot there too. I have to be careful I don’t make my imaginary husband David jealous.

  15. ZAK says:

I hate this “the new such and such” stuff. Let these people be their own person. Theo James is attractive, I liked him on Downton and I wish him good luck but I don’t see a star in the making with him. I’m not always good at telling these things but I’d be surprise if James became a big star.

Say what you will about Woodley’s dopey hippy routine and big mouth but the fact is Divergent is poised to do well and Fault of Our Stars could do very well, couple that with Sony probably forcing her to honor her contract and do Spider-Man and you have someone who could become a star.

    • Apples says:

I’m confused. Is she back in Spider-Man?
I thought she filmed Spider-Man (weren’t there some scenes on a motorbike?) and the Studio wasn’t happy with the results so scrapped it and called it a late reorganization of the series- no hard feelings?

  16. Maria says:

I’d slam it, like a screen door in a hurricane.

  17. Kali says:

Gotta be honest here, going back to when I was a teenage girl, I would’ve been THRILLED to see someone like Theo James as the “heartthrob hero” in the movies that I was watching. My era was the start of the truly pretty boys dominating in the movies aimed at teenage girls and I can remember how much it used to bug me.

I think he’s a lot better looking than Pattinson but he’s been around NOWHERE as long as Leo yet so he hasn’t really proved himself. I’m more interested to see the choices he makes in his downtime between Divergent/insurgent/Allegiant.

  18. Cici says:

The GQ piece is ridiculous but aren’t they usually when they are trying to drum up interest in the next big thing in Hollywood. Theo James is really handsome and he comes across great in interviews. He was on Letterman last night and he has a great sense of humor and even Letterman seemed to enjoy him as a guest. So even if Divergent isn’t a massive hit, I think that he’ll continue to be a working actor either here or the UK.

  19. CK says:

At least, they are giving him the same “hitch on to someone else’ wagon” thing that they are doing for Shailene. That being said, Is Divergent really going to be that big? I just get budget Hunger Games from the trailer. Isn’t the dystopian YA market kind of cornered atm?

  20. Dani says:

He’s way better looking than Sparkles. But his acting isn’t quite where Leo’s was when he began.

  21. Jaderu says:

I’m not even sure Leo is the next Leo anymore.
He’s very handsome but man, they’re really pushing this Divergent thing. Not even out yet and I’m sick of it. Thanks Shailene!!!!

  22. lunchcoma says:

Goodness is Divergent ever pushing its people hard. Let’s see how the movie does before we start calling anyone “The Next…”

  23. Lori says:

I don’t think they know who the fan group of this type of movie even is at this point. While everyone enjoys a nice looking man…….quirky seems much more popular these days than model types.

  24. lol says:

    The next Leo?
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  25. Rachel says:

Why is he wearing a badge directly over his crotch in that picture? It’s very odd placement and distracting.

  26. lulu says:

can he be a heartthrob? sure. will he have the mass hysteria that leo had during titianc, or that rob had during twilight? that has yet to be determined. rob is still trying to shake off the twilight image along with being a heartthrob, and leo is still trying to get his Oscar. good luck theo, he is a little bit older then rob and leo were when they were thrown in the spotlight and that might play against him.

  27. Lucia H says:

I’ve seen him in a bunch of stuff (Downtown, Golden Boy, Underworld etc.) and he’s a pretty good actor. He’s hilarious in interviews – has that raunchy British Wit. He still loves in London and seems pretty chill about about the whole crazy fandom thing so even if Divergent is a big hit and he ends up being the next so and so, I think he’ll be just fine. He is incredibly good looking though in a very masculine and not pretty boy kind of way and this is RARE. His looks kind of remind of me Paul Newman.

  28. lylaooo says:

he doesn´t interest me … i´ll pay more attention to the other guy.. Jai Courtney.. he is super Hot. !! he used to be on partacus as Varro. http://us.cdn001.fansshare.com/photos/jaicourtney/spartacus-jai-courtney-bmp-1458183098.jpg

  29. Lucy says:

I don’t think you guys get it: THIS is the guy who stepped in right when Alex Pettyfer was about to get cast as Four. As in, had it not been for HIM, this would be a post about Alex Pettyfer. Why isn’t anyone talking about that???!!!

  30. Seriously says:

Perfect way to describe the third book! I liked the first two, but about 100 pages into the last one the whole thing was ruined for me. Even before the ending. Given how much it has been trashed on goodreads and amazon, I’m not sure that it will be as successful as it could have been. If the third book had been good, or even decent, I think they’d have a fighting chance. But I might be wrong. I hate when a series is ruined by a poorly thought out conclusion.

    • Tig says:

I ask this in all seriousness- I thoroughly disliked the last book in the HG series, and was amazed when I read they were splitting that travesty into two movies. And if memory serves, a lot of HG readers were put off by the last novel as well. Do you think that the first two movies have created such a momentum that folks will forget that and see the last two movies, spread over a year apart?

  31. Baskingshark says:

29 in Actor Years (31 in Regular Person Years) is a shade long in the tooth to be amassing a rabid following of tweenage fangirls but TJ is actually a decent enough actor and he’s handsome in a generic sort of way, so hopefully he’ll make it out of Divergent with his career alive and settle down in a nice TV cop show.

If not, he can always form a support group for Actors Who Were Supposed To Be The Next Robert Pattinson Via a Young Adult Franchise That Was Desperate To Cash In On Twilight And The Hunger Games with Alden Ehrenreich from Beautiful Creatures and that strange blond ferret-like creature who was in the Moral Instruments disaster.

  32. SamiHami says:

I liked him a lot on Golden Boy and was disappointed when it was cancelled. I think he has a lot of potential. He’s already a far, far superior actor than R Putz. He looks fantastic now, and I bet when his gets a little more age on him–maybe 10 years or so, he’s going to be amazingly hot.

  33. miriam says:

He’s very boring looking. Just scrolling down to the bottom of the comments and I’ve already forgotten what he looks like.

Pattinson is just a pretty boy with little acting ability. Unfortunately for him he will never escape the awful fanbase he has and taint of the poor Twilight films. He’s got a very long way to go to be considered a serious actor.

  34. kitty-bye says:

I like him for himself, I enjoyed his “Bedlam” tv show!

  35. Shelley says:

He is good looking. Leo is just like any normal looking guy down the street, he does nothing for me. For me, Robert Pattinson is beautiful, not many men are.

  36. CeltLady says:

He was hot in the cop show.
Actually, he was the only reason I watched the cop show!
    Yum!

  37. Leslie says:

    Kemal Pamuk ♥♥♥♥

  38. MissWilson says:

He’s very attractive AND has a British accent. 🙂 However, I wish Shailene wasn’t so arrogant and condescending, I’d be more likely to see the film without her.

  39. Evi says:

He looks like a mediterranean tycoon…
    He is Greek actually. Half
    Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis

It’s high time someone bumped off the overrated R Pattinson and Co.

    • lulu says:

sure rob would be happy for him to take the psychos he has had to deal with. he seems to be happy making indie films away from the spotlight.

    • bee says:

      He’s not half. He’s 1/4 Greek.
