Johnny Depp & Amber Heard threw a celeb-filled, ‘intimate’ engagement party

Johnny Depp

I’ve had my doubts about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard making it to the altar. That’s probably a terrible reaction, but I feel like Amber’s going to wake up one day and run for the hills. So many scarves, you know? So much midlife crisis. Of course the lack of a prenup might get them married faster than I think will happen. Plus I do think Amber truly is counting on Johnny to help her become the next Angelina Jolie, so yeah. They’ll probably get hitched, and I’ll enjoy covering the hell out of the ceremony details.

These two crazy kids will release ceremony details, right? We’ve already heard about their planned intimate” barefoot ceremony on Johnny’s island. Johnny and Amber also held an “intimate” engagment party on Friday night. Johnny and Amber arrived arm-and-arm together (the Mail has that photo here). We have pictures of their guests, which included Steven Tyler, Marilyn Manson, Mandy Moore, Ryan Adams, Jerry Bruckheimer. Plus Johnny’s mom! TMZ says the party had “medieval touches” and was held at the Carondelt House, which looks pretty cool. Here are some party details from Us Weekly:

Private couple, private bash! Johnny Depp and fiancee Amber Heard finally celebrated their impending nuptials with an intimate engagement party in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, March 14.

Depp, 50, and Heard, 27, enjoyed a party at The Carondelet House, an insider tells Us Weekly. (The stunning private brick house was created in 1928 as an Italian Villa to host special events.) The former Rum Diary costars arrived an hour after guests, which included Marilyn Manson, Steven Tyler, Mandy Moore, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Rick Ruben.

The stunning bride-to-be wore a white silk spaghetti-strap “vintage dressy” ensemble for her big night, with her blonde locks down. Depp, meanwhile, went for a casual black suit and matching top hat. Heard’s sister arrived with the couple, as well as Jack, Depp’s 11-year-old son with his ex partner Vanessa Paradis.

Once inside The Carondelet House, the future spouses enjoyed a bite to eat and listened to oldies rock songs. The playlist included retro classics from the ’60s through the ’80s like “Wild Thing” by The Troggs, “Tutti Fruti” by Little Richard, “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis, “These Boots Are Made For Walking” by Nancy Sinatra, and “We Got The Beat” by The Go-Go’s.

[From Us Weekly]

I don’t know about how “private” this bash was if the media managed to get all these photos. If they truly wanted to be quiet, Amber and Johnny could have had a party at his castle. No one’s asking them to stay at home all the time, but they’re not too private if the media got all these details. Maybe I’m being too harsh.

Here are some pictures of the attendees. Johnny’s mom looks absolutely thrilled for her son. I wonder how many of these engagement parties she’s attended over the years.

Ugh…I dont even know. Also 50 and 27. Gross.

    • Liv says:

If they’d be truly in love, then so be it. But she’s so obviously famewhoring, it’s disgusting.

Also has his mother really got french nails? Ugh! So tacky!

      • Tiffany :) says:

I don’t see how you can say that she is “obviously famewhoring”. I mean, tons of women have crushed on Depp over the years, I don’t see why she should be shamed for liking the guy.

    • Jules says:

So over him, and Bradley Cooper.

    • danielle says:

WOnder how much amber enjoyed hanging out with all those rich old men who probably like to talk about stock options and their health. Has to be crazy boring!

      • V4Real says:

Please, I think the last thing Steven Tyler and Manson are talking about are stock options.

    • V4Real says:

@ someone It’s not so much the age that bothers me. Wasn’t John Derek over 30 years older than Bo Derek and she wasn’t even 20 when they married. They stayed together until his death. To me something just seems off with Johnny and Amber.

      • Calcifer says:

I feel the same way about the age difference, it’s not what bothers me most. It seems that illusion plays a big role in their relationship: she is hungry for fame and blinded by it, he is blinded by her youth and beauty.

      • Tracy says:

Yes, age aside…. It just seems painfully obvious that she is using him. I never thought I would see the mid life crisis version of Johnny Depp that would fall for this.

        Rethink the prenup, Johnny!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I agree with Calcifer–she’s changing her public personna, after getting with him. It’s not even that she’s being more private. it’s that she feels the need to talk in almost every interview that I’ve read from her about how she’s NOT going to talk about her boyfriend–who’s Johnny Depp, in case you didn’t know. How she’s a serious artiste, not a celebrity, when all she is is the #HOTGIRLWITHBIGBOOBS……and doesn’t even do that well.

She’s famehoing it up in a more subtle way—we’re used to the daily pap strolls, the ring flashing, talking ad nauseum…she just lets her pr do the dirty work. She’s on the Dailymail at least two or three times a week–for NOTHING.

      • Calcifer says:

You are right, Virginia, she’s pulling out all the stops in her quest for fame . It is amazing to see such ambition in action though. So Heard might annoy me, but the stronger response is amazement at her game (and to see where it will get her!). I was never very impressed with Depp by the way (though he looked sweet and had a certain ‘little-boy-lost’ appeal when he was younger), so his behavior is not a major disappointment for me.

      • Blue Sky says:

I was reading yours & Virgilia’s comments, & I was wondering, it’s funny to me, something about this whole messed up situation does not seem right….. The News stemming from this engagement party… Makes it sound as if all is ” just wonderful”….. But I have a bad feeling , it seems the more this progresses, the worse that feeling gets, & I can’t really pin point it- Ive never felt she has really loved him- but even w/ the sentimental speeches , tears, joy & happy faces: I don’t feel good about this- how about you all, & I can’t understand supposedly y close friends & family don’t notice? What’s your opinions?

        May-b it’s just me, idk…..

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

He looks like her father in the first picture. He’s starting to show his age. Why does he insist on wearing such idiotic get-ups? My, I’m cranky today.

    • Blannie says:

I agree about his get-ups. His clothes always look about three sizes too big for him, like he’s playing dress-up with his dad’s clothes.

    • kri says:

I’m wondering if he is losing his hair or maybe some of it fell out after he fyed it blond? God, he was so beautiful-and I’m not talking 20 years ago. Five years ago, he was still dreamy. Now he looks like a wizened, tiny pimp.

  3. eliza says:

Steven Tyler’s outfit is missing his lovely Crocs he so adores. What sofa did he rip apart to achieve that look.

  4. Audrey says:

I imagine that Johnny will look as awful as Steven Tyler as he ages

It won’t last but I do think they’ll get married.

  5. mimif says:

Steven Tyler needs to stop it. Right. Now.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Could his pants be any tighter without injuring him?

    • Liberty says:

whenever I see Tyler, i can’t look away, I am always sort of astonished. Yet, he does not bother me somehow. I would pat him and send him right out the door that way. He is happy in his land and pants. He was just born to bring — that.

  6. bns says:

Well, that was quick. In the past his engagements lasted a lot longer.

  7. MrsBPitt says:

Wow…Johnny has lost all his sex appeal…I remember when I thought he was the sexiest thing (after Brad Pitt, of course) on the planet…its all gone…all the looks and charisma that came smoldering out of JD are lost…and its not just that he has gotten older…he has lost that special something that he had…thanks Amber 🙁

  8. MonicaQ says:

Manson, wow, takes me back to my powerman 5000/Korn days in middle school.

I usually don’t flinch at age differences but holy cow, that’s a politician-esk gap.

  9. Johnny’s 11-year-old son is closer to Amber’s age than he is. Groooossss.

  10. Kroll says:

This is happening, people. Johnny will finally walk that aisle. I suggest you all make your peace with it.

  11. lisa2 says:

I freely admit I have never been a Johnny fangirl. I have a friend that loved him. So I watched his films as a OK I’ll give it a try. It just never happened for me. But I think he was talented.

I think those Pirate films ruined him. He just got too comfortable in that skin and it became his own.

I guess the wedding is happening soon.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

Transcendance in april looks different and whatchable and i can’t wait Black Mass

      • Truthtful says:

@don’t kill me: transcendence looks as awful as the previous bunch…. he is so lost!

    • Rhea says:

ITA. For some reason I have a feeling they would get married as he never before pushing his relationships out in the public so hard like this.

  12. GeeMoney says:

Well… I guess as long as they are happy.

I think they’ll actually get married, and I would put some money on the fact that she’ll have at least one baby by him.

  13. Alin says:

There should be a law against it. People should only have the right to date/marry people their own age (+/-2 years). People who dare to violate that law should get the death penalty! Just because strangers on gossip sites don´t like it and we know that is all what matters…

    • V4Real says:

We all have different opinions about what we consider age appropriate relationships. I can see how some can be offended when an adults dates teenagers. But, if a person is 18 or older and it’s their choice to have a much older partner I don’t really care. Many years ago it was the norm for older marrying younger. Many people on this site have shared stories of their grandparents/great grandparents having a large age gap.

My issue with Depp is not Amber’s age, I just think something is off about her. I could be wrong for thinking that and I hope I am.

      • Truthtful says:

“many years ago it was the norm for older marrying younger. Many people on this site have shared stories of their grandparents/great grandparents having a large age gap.”

Actually marrying older with significant age gaps were not the norm … the 20 and 30 gaps even the 15 age gaps were not common at all for one good reason: life expectancy!
So these large gaps are not normal ( as in the norm) at all yesterday even more than now!
In 1900 the age of life expectancy for both men and women were in their 40’s!!!!…. so the so called “normal” bog age gaps are just a very modern urban legend!

        http://demog.berkeley.edu/~andrew/1918/figure2.html

so now like then these age gaps retain an icky factor: they are not biologically natural!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

V4Real–this reminds me of something my mom said to me a few days ago. She said being that I am 19, that 25 year olds shouldn’t even be talking to me, because all they really want, for the most part, is a girl that they can boss around–the older ones might talk back, and so on.

But I was laughing, privately, because my mom–that COUGAR@!!!!–didn’t even follow her own advice. She robbed the cradle–my dad (stepdad, technically) was 21 when they got married–she was 34……she can’t even talk….

      • V4Real says:

@VC LOL….. Stop putting your mom on blast.

@truthful I wasn’t referring to life expectancy but age gaps. Your chart just proves how long men and women were expected to live over the years. Just because someone was expected to die at an early age doesn’t prove that they didn’t marry younger or older. Also let’s go back further than the 1900’s, there were large age gaps between women/men in some places.

    • Karen says:

      Calm down there, geez.

    • Mrs. Harrison Ford says:

I’m dead set on marrying Harrison Ford and he’s 39 years older than me so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  14. Just Curious... says:

So is that rumored speech he gave at this shindig true, because if so it was really disrespectful!

He basically (allegedly) thanked Jerry Bruckheimer for introducing him to Amber, because she is his “soul mate” and one true love and because of her he feels alive again! He also thanked the guests for supporting them through any “complications!”
This was all in front of he and Vanessa’s children btw!

    • Karen says:

I read about that on another site. I think it’s 100% false. Jerry has absolutely nothing to do with The Rum Diary so I don’t believe he said that. Maybe he made a speech professing his love, I’m sure he’s smitten and I bet they will get married.

For some reason, this party strikes me as more of Johnny’s idea. My guess is Amber suggested a small dinner with just a few people and he suggested all the celebs and making it a blowout. But who knows!

All of this just makes me SO curious about the true reason Johnny and Vanessa split.

      • Just Curious... says:

        Thank you for clarifying!!
I was shocked to read some of the things he “supposedly” said!

From the pictures I saw the theme looks like Johnny’s personality (as well as the invitations) but then I noticed some key figures in his life weren’t there like Tim & Helena, his dad, Bill Carter! But maybe they just avoided the cameras!!

    • KAI says:

I believe it. This is classic mid-life crisis speak/behaviour. “soulmate” “real connection” “never felt this way before” “life is short” “I am really happy” “I feel young again”, etc. The party was definitely his idea just like the huge blowout he had for his son’s 10th birthday where he had Marilyn Manson and Aerosmith perform.

    • Kat says:

I don’t know about Bruckheimer, maybe he knew her from before and recommended her? or maybe there is a mistake because I’ve read the quote and it sounds as he would thanked Hunter for putting them together in The Rum Diary…

But in NO quotes he used the word “soulmate” that’s sure. He said she is his one true love.

His children must be used to Johnny declaring his love for her, and OK with him doing the difference why he wants to marry her and not their mother, because it also said that Johnny thanked his children for embracing her into the family

      • Just Curious... says:

Hunter wasn’t alive in 2009. Maybe Bruce Robinson, although Amber said Johnny picked her for the part so I don’t know anymore lol!

I thought the possible controversial part of his speech was that he “avoided” marriage until he met his one-true love. That seems like a dismissive comment of the time he spent with Vanessa, since they made 2 children together!

But of course these “quotes” have not been confirmed!

      • of course says:

Of course Hunter was dead, but he and Johnny’s promise to Hunter to bring “The Rum Diary” to the cinema, it’s the main reason why they met each other.

About his quotes, of course it would have to be some explanation why he want to marry Amber and not Vanessa. No one want to read that he loves Amber more than what he loved Vanessa, but it seems evident now. Vanessa went pregnant and he stayed, but maybe he always knew that it wasn’t meant to be.

Also Vanessa said that was something wrong since the beginning. Maybe it was this, that she knew that he wouldn’t have stayed without her pregnancy.

  15. Calcifer says:

Would Johnny Depp ever have organized a party like this in the past? Never! One of his most marked characteristics was his love of privacy. This is obviously Amber strategically planning her way to everlasting fame. She might be a bit boring in her looks and her acting, but her burning ambition is fascinating! Curious to see what her next move will be.

  16. FingerBinger says:

Johnny’s Mom is cute. That’s all I got.

  17. chaser says:

    So intimate. Much celebrity.

  18. Alexis says:

Yeah, I don’t buy that she’s into it, and not because of the age difference(say, czj and m Douglas had chemistry). She strikes me as trying to move up by any means necessary, and he’s seems like a male jlo(always must be in a serious relationship-his old partnership was failing, and heard was pretty and there). Except jLo has the good sense not to marry her latest at least.

    • Calcifer says:

It must be wonderful for her though, getting engaged to Depp! Can you imagine, all those years of having been a B-list actress, all the times she must have been rejected for roles. And now all of a sudden finding herself on top. Finally being the center of attention and people having to treat her with respect as the future Mrs. Depp… I am not saying she doesn’t love him, but I get a feeling she loves the power and privilege most of all.

  19. abby says:

Marilyn Manson, Steven Tyler, Mandy Moore? hmmmm, One of these things is not like the others.

Anyway, whatever Depp. Marry your girl Amber if she makes you happy. But here are 2 things:

    1. If you do not get a prenup, you are a bigger fool than I imagined.
    2. Anyone who needs help to become the “next Jolie” should probably not bother making the attempt. Maybe Amber should focus on being Amber and what distinguishes her from Jolie. But imo, Jolie is a non-issue since she is gradually moving away from acting, not to mention Jolie is little over a decade older than Amber. They aren’t in competition for the same roles and Amber positioning herself as “the next Jolie” is lacking creativity, especially since that misnomer was already (mis)assigned to Megan Fox. Amber needs to forge her own identity.
Perhaps more importantly, Amber should focus on what distinguishes her from the myriad of other pretty yet interchangeable faces out there with minimal to average talent.
If after a decade in Hollywood, Amber has not made a name for herself or left an indelible impression on audiences/casting directors then it’s unlikely she ever will. Has anyone ever watched Amber onscreen and, regardless of the size of her role, walked away wondering “who was that girl?” because her screen presence was so intoxicating that you simply couldn’t take your eyes off her? That you begin to question your sexuality because she just draws you in? That you pull up her screen credits on IMBD just to find out what else she might have done earlier in her career? Nah, cannot say that I have. But I have for a few actresses in the past (including Jolie) when I first came upon them, because they had that “It” factor.
Regardless, I am sure Amber will have a reasonably decent career – hey even Clooney managed to kickstart the careers of some of his girlfriends so I am sure Depp can make something of Amber, who at least had somewhat of a headstart. Will it be what she is hoping for? A small role here or there, the female lead (girlfriend/wife) opposite the male protagonist in a major film perhaps. But who knows, Hollywood is a weird place and Depp is well connected but imo she’ll forever be coasting by on his influence and professional favors.

    Nontheless, Mazel tov!

  20. Kelly says:

Who’d have thought I’d ever get sick of seeing him, but there you have it, it’s happened.

  21. mj says:

I certainly don’t share in the common opinion, but… I’m not bothered by this? I used to love Depp but he’s having his weird midlife crisis thing. I’ll still watch his older movies. I really don’t mind that he’s with Amber Heard. It seems like the least insidious of happenings, even in the gossip world. And honestly aside from sh*t movies I don’t think she’s caused much harm. She’s just kinda there.

  22. Kaitlyn says:

Mandy Moore was invited? Talk about a random guest list! I feel so bad for Vanessa, now he will marry a bisexual woman who only loves him for his fame and money. It’s all about what she can get out of it.

    • Lemonsorbet says:

Ms Paradis got the best years of Depp. Why feel bad?

      • Karen says:

I never get this argument. She gave him her best years too, so they both lose frankly. Minus the lovely kids of course.

      • jd says:

Of course johnny had is best years with Vanessa no one should feel bad for van she’s come out of this so dignified and couldn’t care less about johnny or amber.

    • Paul says:

I don’t. Glad her traded gap tooth in btw how do feel bad for someone you’ve never met????

      • Just Curious... says:

Well how can you be happy he “traded her gaped tooth in?”

What’s the difference between being happy or bad for someone you’ve never met?

  23. Nroth Wset says:

Depp has never been papped so much as now. Wow he must really like Amber.(midlife crisis must be really acting up.When she dumps him, Johnny must be put on a suicide watch.
    Untill then…

  24. Penelope says:

I may be alone in this but I still find Johnny hot and Amber’s beautiful. Good luck guys!

  25. Nymeria says:

In other words, they feel the need to prove to their peers that they’re legit.

In other other words (hee), they feel super-insecure.

  26. Green Is Good says:

Let’s cut to the chase: Amber is not bisexual. She’s an opportunist . She uses people to her advantage, be they men or women. Take note how quick Amber dumped her alleged “girlfriend” when Johnny came sniffing around her panties.

Johnny may as well hand her a house and 30 percent of his cash now. This woman is going to take him to the cleaners. Although I hope he isn’t as stupid as he appears.

  27. Vl says:

Ms Heard is not aging well.

  28. balehead2012 says:

I come to this thread to read and have fun, because I really couldn’t care less who Depp is dating, but I LOVE all your comments, so funny and witty 🙂
    Steven Tyler’s outfit though….EWWW!

  29. mkyarwood says:

    Well.. his mom is cute.

  30. cool says:

well,if they are happy together and want to get married that’s fine by me.Also the place looked gorgeous and his mother is cute.I just wished the people will tune down the unreasonable hate towards them.

  31. Londerland says:

I think what bugs me about this pairing is not the age gap, and it’s not the midlife crisis-ness, and it’s not the issue of whether he hooked up with Amber when he was still with Vanessa. It’s that Amber Heard herself is so bloody boring! I’m sure she’s lovely and she’s certainly beautiful in a generic sort of way – her nose isn’t on backwards or anything – but am I the only one who finds her unbearably beige and bland? For all the “allegedly edgy Angelina wannabe bisexual artiste tough girl” press she courts, I couldn’t even pick her out of a lineup if she didn’t have Johnny Depp’s name next to her head in 150-point type.

Which is fine, but this is Johnny Depp, you know? All his other girlfriends have had something – a unique look or a quirky personality or oddball talent or a little boho mystique, something. Amber’s just…oatmeal.

  32. Maeve says:

Someone needs to tell the future (???) Mrs. Depp that Jennifer Lawrence is already the next Angelina Jolie and will be for quite some time!

  33. bobalouski says:

So, she’ll bang hot chicks while he watches. Sounds like a win-win to me. And he’ll probably get the leftovers. Win-win-win. 50 and 27? We should all be so lucky.

  34. Ted says:

Seems like he wants to use some years to be a rocker with a model girl, & she’s there to take advantage of the situation. I would not be surprised if Vanessa threw him out he started to look like he lived in a barn. He’s flipped. Not many from the movie business attending. Not surprised either. He’s just got weird.

  35. Ted says:

Yeah and it reminds me of another Anna Nichole Smith thing. Both girls from Texas. And if he is there to watch girls fool around that just sounds pathetic & desperate to me. She’s getting it all. He’s being a joke. Never thought he would do that to himself and worse to his children. Nut case.
