Scarlett Johansson: I’ve never dieted or gone to a gym

spirit 2 181208
Scarlett Johansson has a new interview in In Touch in which she’s promoting her latest film, He’s Just Not That Into You. The film was top at the box office last weekend with an estimated $27.7 million despite mediocre reviews. I like Scarlett and enjoy her interviews because she seems smart, funny and down to earth. Her singing career is misguided to say the least, but no one can be perfect. In her talk with In Touch, Scarlett says she’s happier than ever after her marriage to Ryan Reynolds, but she does share her ire at stories that she’s had plastic surgery, because they’re just not true. Scarlett also denies every dieting in her entire life or even setting foot in a gym. Does that mean she never exercises or just that she doesn’t go to a gym?

Is it hard to maintain privacy?
I have good training about how to keep myself out of the spotlight. And I have friends that I can trust as well as a family who gives me unfailing support. So, it’s not that difficult.

What’s the strangest rumor you’ve heard about yourself?
The plastic surgery stories really drive me nuts.

Why is that?
It’s so false. A photo of me as a 14-year-old is juxtaposed with a photo of me at 24. Then they’ll say: “Oh, the nose looks different!” Why don’t they say: “Oh, did she get new breasts?”

It’s refreshing that you don’t subscribe to the scary-skinny craze in Hollywood.
That’s the biggest nonsense ever! Count me out. I don’t understand what’s supposed to be sexy there. And besides, I like to eat to much.

Do you diet?
I have never been on a diet in my whole life.

Do you have to work out a lot?
I’ve seen gyms only from the outside. I feel very comfortable with my body.

How do you describe your fashion sense?
My own style is, of course, very important to me. I love glamour – I am a girl, after all. When I go to a movie premiere or party, I like to get styled.

What about when you’re at home?
I don’t run around in unaffordable clothes. Jeans, T-shirts and cowboy boots will do. Outer appearance is only of secondary importance to me in real life. Values, the right convictions and the courage to stand up for one’s beliefs are much more important.

Are you optimistic about the year ahead?
Of course. I have a president who I like, a husband I love above everything else and three movies coming out that I’m proud of. At the moment, I am happier than ever before!

[From In Touch, print edition, February 16, 2008]

I love how she says that she doesn’t “run around in unaffordable clothes”! That’s so nice to hear from a celebrity, although Scarlett has modeled for Louis Vuitton, the ultimate in frivolous brand names. She doesn’t really condemn other people for wearing luxury goods, so maybe it’s not fair to call her on it.

I’m one of those people that really has to exercise and watch what I eat or I gain weight. I find it hard to believe that gorgeous women like Scarlett Johansson can get away without dieting or exercising, but she’s only 24 and things were much easier for me at that age too.

Exactly–when I was 24, I actually lost about 15 to 20 pounds, because I wasn’t drinking like I did when I was in school. I was a size 2 or 4 without dieting and without going to the gym. Flash forward eight years later, and I’m a 10 and I’m on a diet and I have a gym membership. Just wait till that metabolism slows down! It was a slap in the face for me!!

  2. saffron says:

Things certainly change with age. I was 105 pounds at 24… and 30 pounds heavier at 36.

But Scarlett is a gorgeous woman and it’s refreshing to hear her speak, as a Hollywood actress who has a healthy, real outlook.

  3. Orangejulius says:

Yep. She’ll get there eventually if she wants to keep making movies.

  4. Baholicious says:

I bet if you put your ear next to her head you could hear the ocean.

  5. Diva says:

    “or taken an acting lesson.”

I actually liked Miss Scarlett at one point. While I loved Vicky Christina Barcelona, she was so weak in it. Then I saw He’s Just Not That Into You on Friday and she was literally painful.

  6. barneslr says:

I just don’t like her. She comes across as having a very superior attitude. I almost would put her in the Gwyneth Paltrow category. She just gives off a vibe that says “I’m ever so much better than you little people…”

Did she hire a blind make up person, or what? What is up with the 1/2 pound of pink blush in that header pick? Gak.

  7. MoJo says:

I believe that she doesn’t work out, though it sounds like she doesn’t remember that some people exercise simply to remain healthy, not to change their body.

Despite not being a fan of hers, I like her attitude on clothes and looks. It’s one thing I can admire about her. But one day, I’d really love to hear one of these girls go, “Hell, yeah, I work out to look like this!” rather than all these gorgeous girls letting us know that they were born perfect.

@Diva, I thought she was great in Vicky Cristina Barcelona! She played vapid, flighty, pseudo-artsy so well! (I wonder why.) Shame Rebecca Hall didn’t get much attention for her awesome work in that.

  8. Ron says:

Barneslr–you are absolutely on the money. She does have a superior attitude and can be very condescending and nasty. There are great stories about her dating back to when she had just finished The Horse Whisperer. Ryan Reynolds exercises alot–maybe he can fill Scarlett in on what that’s all about. He’s airbrushed to within an inch of not knowing who it is on Men’s Health this month.

  9. Annie says:

But I mean, it’s definitely possible to be thin and fit without ever dieting or going to the gym.

I’ve only been inside a gym a handful of times, and mostly it was to keep my sister company. LOL And I’ve never ever ever calorie counted (thank god) or dieted. I love food far too much.

And my hollister jeans tell me I’m a size 1.

So /shrug. Some people just have good genes.

  10. NotBlonde says:

You guys are gullible as hell if you think all of this is true. Every celebrity says they don’t diet or exercise. Or they say they exercise 30 minutes a day or some other nonsense. Scarlett’s weight has gone up and down the last few years and the only thing that will do that is exercise. It’s likely she has someone come to her house so she can slyly get away with saying she’s only seen gyms from the outside.

“Unaffordable clothes” are different to her. Her jeans, t-shirt and cowboy boots could easily run upwards of $1,000. They did a style thing of her in some magazine, I forget which one does this…where they price a celebrity’s outfit. Anyway, I recall she was in one next to Lindsay Lohan and she was wearing $500 jeans and a $300 top with a really expensive bag (forget how much it was).

  11. krystle says:

i just feel like celebrities should humor us a little and say that they eat veggies or take long walks instead of saying they don’t diet or exercise at all. that HAS to be a lie!

  12. I don’t doubt that she’s never been to the gym. She has no muscle tone. & Saffron’s right, her metabolism is about to shut down in 3,2,1…She should work out just for the cardiovascular benefits.

  13. lrm says:

Actually, shifting nutrition intake will do that-ie,less meat,no cheese [read one time SJ counts cheese as her vice],less bread…that definitely changes one’s weight w/o excercise…
oh yea,and ladies, thyroid imbalance is a major factor for many women in weight gain….regardless of diet or excercise. just sayin’. you even find that in poorer countries where women are only basic grain and legume diets….there can still be overweight women which defies logic [esp when they are often doing laborious work all day long….]

  14. Baholicious says:

God, a really nice pair of Lucchese cowboy boots alone can cost a grand…always wanted a black and red pair with a cuban heel. Dream on Baho.

  15. Zoe says:

    yeah, metabolism!
I had that bod at 24 too, now I (literally) have to work my ass off to keep my body looking good(ish).

Her time will unfortunately come and her heart will look like a greasy potato.

She def. comes off as snotty and superior.

Some people just hate gyms tho, and get lots of exercise by keeping busy (and sex of course, is GREAT excercise).

So, I guess what I’m saying is, EVERYBODY GO GET LAID and you too can look like Scarlett Jo.

(if she did work out, she wouldn’t need the clown blush)

  16. BluePlanet says:

Some people like myself go to the gym and because we enjoy it, and for our health, not because we’re uncomfortable with our bodies.
I recommend starting in your twenties at least, because as you age, if you have no muscle, your metabolism will grind to a halt.

  17. Annie says:

Rofl. If sex counts as exercise…

Ok, then I guess I take back my earlier statement about not exercising much.

  18. california angel says:

I have to exercise and have had to since I was 14. I’m 24 and my metabolism has never been on my side, so yes, it is totally genetic. I really like the feeling that I get after exercising though, I get out my anger and it really helps when I’m feeling a bit bummed.

  19. MaiGirl says:

I liked her in Girl with a Pearl Earring, but otherwise, she trades on her looks and is in no way a good actress. It’s funny, because I have always thought of her as a butterface. Other than her massive natural rack and nice curves, I don’t really get her appeal (but, I guess for some people, a hot bod is enough!). I do like what she has to say about the lollipop/gristle goddess trend. I wish some of the celebrity stick insects out there would take some notes.

  20. Christina says:

she’s gorgeous and everything… but i definitely believe she doesn’t set foot in a gym… she doesn’t look very toned… which is a nice change from the tanned, skeletal hollywood look of late…

  21. ziggybutterfly says:

PUUUUUUKE. I rented Vicky Christina Barcelona @ the weekend. Ugh, I cannot stand this woman. I believe her she hasn’t dieted or exercised in her entire life, but w/ those curves …her wieght is going to sky rocket @ 30-35. Except she won’t be able to lose the weight w/ exercise since she’s never done it before. She’s so smug, God, and now this new Buckley album??? PLEASE SOMEONE STOP HER!!! She’s ruining him!!

  22. doodahs says:

I saw her at a restaurant once and what a bloody production they went through so she could be in a corner where no one could see her. (Except the upheaval of moving tables and furniture kind of gave the game away). She then sauntered through the restaurant to her ‘private spot’ and didn’t even bother eating.

    Whatev’s…

  23. buenavissta says:

It’s always about looks. Doesn’t any one in Hollywood care about health? I exercise, have killer metabolism and will never ever look like her in a bikini and….I don’t care. What I do care about is being active and spry when I’m 50, 60, 70 ,80 etc.

  24. cara says:

I DO think she did the Subway “diet” though….a few yars back there were a ton of paparrazzi shots of her w/ her Subway bag.

  25. lisa says:

Wait until she gets into her 30’s. Then we can watch her change her tune.

  26. FF says:

I’ve still no idea why Reebok thought she was a good spokesperson for them.

We all KNOW she never hits the gym – wherefore the inspiration that would sell running shoes?

  27. ChristinaX says:

Great for her that she doesn’t tend to gain weight rapidly and keep it in all the “right” places. What, does she think she deserves some sort of honor because she’s built differently?

  28. vdantev says:

Yeah, that won’t make people hate you, Scarjo….

  29. Bob says:

Scarlet isn’t the first actress to discover that she can eat as much as she wants and still stay thin as long as she keeps taking massive amounts of cocaine.

  30. dovesgate says:

Yeah but how does her hair stay thick and shiny and her skin clear and nice if shes on a Jenny Crank diet?

  31. JMC says:

I don’t like her because her boobs are bigger than mine. It’s that simple!

  32. Granger says:

I’m with those who believe she’s never been inside a gym, because she doesn’t have any muscle tone. I do like that she isn’t skinny or ridiculously “cut,” though.

But I find it hard to believe that she’s never dieted. Maybe not in the more traditional Jenny Craig/Weight Watchers/Atkins kind of way; but given the business, I’m sure she’s been asked to “count calories and lose a few before filming starts.”

  33. Jesse says:

Haha! I’ve seen her inside of gym. Granted, she was moving very slowly on a cardio machine (not much of a work out), but she definitely has worked out.

  34. kate says:

You know, maybe it’s true that she doesn’t work out now (and probably also true that when she is older, she might have to), but it’s this kind of crap that makes the rest of us feel bad.

Maybe I shouldn’t be mad with her though. Maybe I should be mad with the stupid interviewer who decided to rub it in the face of their readership.

  35. Megan says:

She’s lying about the nose job, she’s definitely had one.

  36. Aspen says:

Wow…that was a STUPID thing to say.

    Congratulations on being naturally thin.

Some of us, who are “comfortable” with our bodies, still have to exercise and watch what we eat to maintain a modicum of health. I do not work out and watch my diet because I am neurotic. I do it because I am not blessed with a metabolism that would allow me to do otherwise.

MOST women are not genetically able to “love to eat” whatever they want without also having to work out in order to keep a slender figure.

I love to eat. I really love to eat cheesecake. I hate working out. But you know? I cannot eat cheesecake whenever I want, and I have to workout regularly to prevent myself turning into a landed sea mammal.

What a pretentious cow! To think I used to defend her. /shakes head

  37. Annie says:

    Hey, hey, hey.

Seems like a lot of people here are angry and jealous.

She didn’t go around going “HAHAHAHAH I DONT HAVE TO DIET OR WORKOUT AND I’M THIN AND YOU’RE ALL FAT!!!”

No. She just answered the questions.

And if someone asked me those questions, I’d answer the same because it’s the TRUTH. I’m not gonna sit here and say “Oh yea, I totally work out and eat right” and shit just so it can make YOU feel better about yourself.

I got lucky. Heck, my mom LOST weight after giving birth to me. It’s just something about our genetic makeup. Went from 95lbs to 90lbs and she was about 26 when she had me. She’s now coasting at a nice 120 and hasn’t hit the gym. No time.

So maybe Ms. Johanssen just got blessed with good genes and a hot husband to boot.

  38. sussquach says:

i love all these people who think they “know” a famous person from what they read or see in the media.

I don’t know SJ but I have seen her in person, dressed down, a regular girl, tiny, very attractive, a little septum ring through her nose, just crossing the street in the village like any young college-age woman. really more punk rock than i would have expected.

PEOPLE- YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR CELEBRITIES
YOU ONLY KNOW WHAT THE MEDIA WANTS YOU TO KNOW AND THAT IS WHAT EVER WILL SELL PAPERS/ADVERTISING IS WHAT THEY SHOW YOU

  39. pookynut says:

Her arms don’t look like she works out – just pretty 24-year old arms. it’s weird because I keep getting older, and the stars du jour stay the same age. You can’t compare yourself to them. When I was younger I did, and my body looked the same. Now, 20 years later, it doesn’t. And I’m not about to take human growth hormone to maintain muscle mass or get plastic surgery to look like them.

  40. Codzilla says:

Annie: If I had a dollar for every time you’ve gone on about your genetic blessings, I could pay off my house. Is a little humility such a bad thing? We all toot our own horn on occasion, and that’s perfectly fine, but excessive boasting is simply off putting. And before you jump to conclusions, I’m far from jealous: I just don’t understand the need to bluster on so much.

  41. Ned says:

Scarlett has a great feminine body but she is not even close to “pretty”.

Given her lacking talent or inability to act, I don’t think sounding stupid helps her much either.

  42. Annie says:

I do it because you and everyone else spend so much time hating on the genetic blessings of others and saying that’s it’s not possible.

That’s always the retort: Oh she’s lying, it’s not true.

My point is if a regular person can have it, they sure can too.

  43. James says:

Rock on, Scarlett. You are a gorgeous woman. No need to change a thing.

  44. ChristinaX says:

If someone on the thicker/fluffier side said something like this at an interview, I guarantee people would be standing there with pitchforks on their damn lawn.

I guess the requirement to choke down a bland celery stick and exercise everyday only applies to you if you’re overweight. It has nothing to do with me being all “fat acceptance” and bitter, but from an objective viewpoint that it’s hypocritical to praise someone who’s thin and doesn’t diet or exercise but criticize someon overweight for admitting the same thing.

…Which leads me to the same conclusion I’ve maintained all along, and that the obesity witch hunt has little to do with promoting a “healthy lifestyle” and watching what you eat or exercising.

  45. Whether it’s intended or not, the “I don’t work out” comment has always bothered me.

Like, is that supposed to impress me?
Is that supposed to make me feel bad about the time and effort I put into my workout?
Are you better than me because you eat like a bird and can run a mile in 15+ minutes, but you can wear designer clothing?
Do you really feel that insecure about yourself that you need to lie about exercise?

I mean, she’s clearly is doing something to keep her Hollywood figure. I’ll buy that she’s “naturally thin”, but that only gets you so far, and she’s been around for a few years now. I just find it amusing that she thinks she can pull one over us.

  46. Chiara says:

Enjoy Scarlett … in everything from Lost in Translation to Girl with the Pearl Earring. Her acting range is not well developed, yet, but she’s at ease in front of the camera, naturalistic, unassuming.

  47. Cha Cha says:

I totally believe you Scarlett, hence you being on the verge of flabby arms.

“Outer appearance is only of secondary importance to me in real life.”

A person who has “depth” like she says she does in real life, would show it on screen as well. But she goes for the bimbo type roles. With her Lost In Translation role, she could have gone the Winona Ryder route, but instead went the, “I want to be like Marilyn Monroe” route.

I’m sorry Scarlett, I’m just not that into you.

  48. Jenna says:

Why the hell does it matter if people voice their opinions on celebrities even though they don’t ‘actually know them’? I honestly hate that question seeing how this IS a gossip site in which people can come on and rant and rave about any celebrity they want. Shove it.

    That said.

You’ve never been to a gym or at least dieted? Ha yeah, and I have never brushed my teeth in a day.

  49. lulu says:

when you see her in the movie he’s not that into you , you would see how healthy and sexy this girl is * pure sexiness*.

  50. gg says:

She looks like she never exercises. Thank god they fixed her hair. The dark color was terrible. And she seriously needs to stop with the pigeon toes on the red carpet. She’s not a four-year-old.

  51. Payton says:

I am glad that Scarlett isn’t scary skinny, and looks healthy & glowing. She doesn’t look like she works out, because she has zero muscle tone! I am 40 now, and have 2 children. I walk/run & do free weights at home. Gyms are disgusting & germy. I am a size 2, but I exercise every day, rather than watching tv like a zombie. My mom has cancer, my dad is diabetic, and my brother is obese; therefore, fear has fueled my desire to look after myself. Exercise should be for well-being & stress relief. Hopefully sexy Ryan will have a positive influence on Scarlett, before she becomes a pompous flab-monster!

  52. ChristinaX says:

I’d be fibbing if I said I didn’t like her body, because she’s not too thin or muscular. She’s fit, but she’s “soft” and I think soft bodies are way sexier than ripped.

    That’s just my opinion.

Still, though, she really needs to get over herself.

  53. Jen says:

    she’s a lucky bitch!
    stupid tat though

  54. Ashley says:

You can tell. She’s never really been skinny. She has what I’d call birthin’ hips. When she’s not styled she looks just like every other 5’2 pear shaped girl.

  55. Blah Girls says:

    what? that is totally unfair!!

  56. Jill-e-b says:

@Annie – wearing a size 1 doesn’t mean you’re fit. It means you’re thin. There is a huge difference. If you never exercise, being thin doesn’t do crap for your health. I’m just saying.

  57. Polish says:

It is impossible for an actor not go to a gym when living on your image.

Scarlett said it was good to be with people fat, but the reality is very different.

  58. honala says:

To me she’s alway gonna be a fat ho with a pig-like nose. She SHOULD shed some pounds and she SHOULD pay attention to what she wears. She’s paid to look cute so she better step it up

  59. romano says:

Well, I think she’s so full of herself and her post on Huffington is contradictory with she does for a living. She’s talking about promoting the right ideals?? Wtf?? Why does she think she has the roles she gets? Certainly not because she’s a first class talented actress. More so because she has giant boobs and lips and can look provocative. Period.

  60. Tam says:

Yeah right she doesn’t exercise or diet! I don’t understand why women celebrities are so silent about their workout and diet regimens! It’s like: ”let’s make it look like we’re effortlessly pretty and in shape, we’re just born that way!” Dunno why they just don’t come together and completely turn things around, you know, why don’t they say ”screw you, we’re in charge and we MAKE the movies and decide how we’re gonna look, screw you perverted directors!” I mean, I remember Marcia Cross saying once that she’s litteraly being paid not to eat and that the struggle with it is living hell! Geeeeeeez! Womenn!! Wake uppppp! It must be so sickening and consuming to spend so much time worrying about one’s self!

  61. Trish says:

One, Scarlett seems like such a snob person. She’s always posing with her nose up in the air and looking like she owns the world and can command everyone. There is a way to be confident without being arrogant and looking like a bitch you know. Two, she probably doesn’t work out much, considering her thick flabby arms, all the make-up that they shove on her face to make it look more angular and all the gowns that she picks to hide her bottom, which is pretty big, you can tell. So with all the right touch-ups and tricks she can pull it off so far (she’s still young) I DO think that she diets though, and even though she says she eats anything, she probably relies on portion control and calorie counting… You’re gonna tell me that when she goes out for dinner she’d dare to pig out in front of her sexy fab friends? No way! Just wait till her metabolism slows down in a few years, she’ll be jogging all day allright, just like most actresses!
