Yesterday we reported that Halle Berry accused Parade Magazine of repurposing her suicide story to sell papers. I re-read what she wrote, and while she didn’t say outright that they used old interviews to make up the quote, that’s exactly how she made it sound: “It wasn’t my wish to go into all of that again in this time of my life. I talked about it on Larry King Live and Oprah when it was relevant, and I felt like it was important to help other women and share it with them… It wouldn’t be my wish to really revisit that period, but this outlet did and made it seem as if it were current again. Because I have a movie out, some magazine has sensationalized some old material and it’s not something that I want to talk about. It’s 10 years old and I’m so past it.”

Parade says that Halle did talk about that quite openly with them, that her quotes about trying to commit suicide with carbon monoxide in her car after her failed first marriage are all on tape and they can prove it:

All of the quotes in the April 1 PARADE profile on Halle Berry came from a candid sit-down interview between Ms. Berry and PARADE writer Emily Listfield on January 25, 2007. Ms. Berry talked very freely (on tape) about the challenges she has faced in her life, including her failed marriages and suicide attempt. It is unfortunate that Ms. Berry has chosen to respond to media interest by backing away from what she originally told PARADE.

This week’s National Enquirer says Halle didn’t just have that single suicide attempt. They say she tried to kill herself in a second incident that she has not talked about, and that it followed the breakdown of her second marriage with cheating singer Eric Benet:

And when she learned hubby No. 2, Eric Benet, had cheated on her while she was filming the 007 flick “Die Another Day” in London, a despondent Halle tried to kill herself – this time with booze and pills, says a source.

When Halle got word of Eric’s womanizing, she exploded and started throwing things around her rented apartment, the source says.

Luckily, the disturbance altered a staffer who found Halle after she’d swallowed a load of sleeping pills and washed them down with alcohol, said the source.

The staffer called a doctor, who treated the actress in her room.

That’s really sad for Halle and I won’t bash her too much for trying to deny that she was talking about it again. She should have kept her mouth shut, though, as she’s not doing herself any favors by accusing some magazine of using an old story when she was all too willing to share. It helps to hear that celebrities have rough times too and the fact that Halle got through it is inspiring, even though she’s trying to take back her words and is getting busted for it.
