Taylor Swift dropped $20 million on two Tribeca lofts: smart business or excessive?

Here are some photos of Taylor Swift, out and about in NYC on Friday. She was hanging out with Lily Aldridge, the wife of Caleb Followill and a Victoria’s Secret model in her own right. Why has Swifty been hanging out with so many models lately? First Swifty went on road trip through California with Karlie Kloss, and now she’s doing a Sex & the City brunch with Lily Aldridge?

I actually think the SATC reference is more than apt. It looks like Taylor has bought herself a luxury Tribeca loft, also known as a $20 million shag-pad. The paps got shots of burly men moving Swifty’s stuff into a building in Tribeca on Friday too, and that explains why Taylor has been in New York for more than a week – she’s been preparing the apartment! Here’s more:

She has a number of luxurious homes across the United States. And now it seems Taylor Swift has added to her extensive property portfolio and snapped up not one but two apartments in New York’s trendy TriBeCa neighbourhood.

The 24-year-old is said to have splashed out around $20 million for the adjacent lofts, which were previously owned by Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson. Taylor seemed to avoid any heavy lifting by taking a stroll with Victoria’s Secret Angel Lily Aldridge as her belongings were moved into the luxury apartment.

According to The Real Estalker, Taylor may have purchased two lofts in the prestigious building, which also counts Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen among its residents. Speculation mounted after the I Knew You Were Trouble singer was spotted visiting the building several times, shortly after director Peter Jackson listed his two apartments for the combined asking price of $21,500,000.

The smaller of the two dwellings isn’t exactly tiny, boasting three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, while the larger one is a whopping 5,869 square foot penthouse with six bedrooms. Both are tastefully decorated with hardwood floors, exposed beams and wooden columns giving a homey feel. And there’s plenty of space for Taylor to store all her designers threads. A 25 foot long hall lined with 10 closets opens out into a dressing room, while the large master bedroom has a fireplace to snuggle up next to.

Not short of places to lay her head, the pop princess already owns homes in Beverly Hills, California and a penthouse duplex in Nashville, Tennessee, which she considers her main residence. Last year she also splashed out on a $17.75million mansion in the upmarket neighbourhood of Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

[From The Daily Mail]

It will be interesting to see how much time Taylor spends in NYC in the coming months/years. Will she really try to be a New Yorker? Is she searching for a boyfriend? Will she have a weekly brunch with Samantha, Carrie and Miranda (Swifty is totally Charlotte)? Or is she just expanding her real estate portfolio because she’s an incredibly wealthy woman and she got a good deal on these lofts?

I barely own more than 3 pairs of shoes (sneakers, cleats, and a pair of Docs) so I can’t imagine owning that many houses. I mean, don’t you have to pay the power bill to all of them? And water, trash pick up, HOAs–

Wth am I talking about? I’m thinking about this like a pleb.

    • QQ says:

Can you imagine also having to maintain 2 or 3 homes? And having clothes on the ready in all three places, Do they ship em to you? Or you have a selection of clothes? Do you have a person that stays there or must people be dispatched to freshen up your joint upon your arrival
      Gahhh so many logistical questions!!

    • Kiddo says:

The taxes are what would kill you, I’d think.

      • MonicaQ says:

That too, good god. Florida has no tax on something house related (well, I’ll find out here soon as I meet with a Realtor soon) but jeez.

  2. Aria says:

    Where’s my daily Goop story?!

There’s something really off about this Taylor girl.

  3. We Are All Made of Stars says:

Oh no SO WHAT GUY LIVES IN TRIBECA? 🙂

Seriously, another silly celebrity engaging in ridiculous amounts of excess. How much does one person need? What a story.

  4. Noel says:

I’m looking for an apartment in NYC, Swifty, want to let me stay there rent free? I’ll paint your toenails and listen to you wax poetic about boys.

  5. Allie says:

I’d love an apartment in NYC if I was rich but I find buying two huge lofts way too excessive. Also, I love the difference in styling between these two ladies. They’re only a few years apart but one looks chic, the other one looks like a tween. Three guesses to which is the tween.

  6. OriginalLee says:

    Those legs!!

Note to self: get to the gym more often.

  7. Hello Kitty says:

    Edited: got my facts checked.
Smart in this economy! A city like NYC will always have buyers interested in paying top dollar. Not too long ago a NYC unit was sold to a Russian Oligarch for a record $88 million.

Another buyer bought a $6.5 million unit for her toddler on the off chance the kid goes to NYU or Columbia for university.

If I had a buttload of money I’d buy expensive real estate too.

    • Just Me says:

Yep. She’s setting herself up for retirement. She’s got a backup plan. VERY smart.

  8. S says:

Do the damn thing, Tay. Good for her investing in properties. I imagine she has equally good investments behind the scenes as well. She’s toned it down in her love life (publicly), seems to draw and maintain a wide array of female friendships and has crazy professional success. Can’t hate on any of that.

    • Sullivan says:

      + 1
She’s smart. She is a self-disciplined professional, which is surprisingly uncommon in her field, who hires shrewd business-people and advisors to handle the millions she has amassed.

  9. Ag says:

Is it next to a boy? It is, isn’t it? Awwwwww…

  10. Chrissy says:

IMO This is a smart investment. Real estate is the way to go –
maybe she’ll rent them out to pay off the mortgage! Especially
in New York. It’s not like it’s Des Moines and she’ll lose money
on the deal! (No offence to anyone from Des Moines….)

  11. Tiffany says:

20 in New York, 17.5 in Rhode Island and the millions in TN and LA. I did not think Swift’s been in the game this long to throw that kind of money around. Then I remember her family is extremely wealthy so there is that.

    • Jana says:

Girl is worth $150mil so she’s not depending on her wealthy for anything but guidance on how to handle her money so she can stay rich on her own.

  12. flutters says:

Good for her. I think New York City’s a good fit for Taylor right now and she’s definitely ripe for some New York City-style adventures.

  13. InvaderTak says:

Is she going to renovate them LOTR style? Going to have a Lothlorien theme now? She already has a human sized bird cage somewhere. And they did belong to peter Jackson.

  14. Abby says:

her body is to die for…wish I could have those legs. Anyways who is she?

Has been too long without a bf no

    • Just Me says:

Blind Items suggest many of the others were beards and/or business arrangements to boost her profile. Could be she’s legitimately & quietly dating behind the scenes.

  15. lylaooo says:

ok.. now I am really jealous
i´m 27 and i still can´t save money to buy a new car! its really difficulttt!!

  16. HH says:

The only thing I admire about Taylor Swift is her real estate game. Girl knows (or has a team that knows) a good market.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Really? She was criticized for overpaying on her behemoth Rhode Island house by real estate experts, including by the woman who is a self-made billionaire real estate investor on Shark Tank, I forget her name. Also, you have to pay massive taxes and upkeep on all those properties. You’re playing the long game with real estate if you’re buying for potential profit.

  17. Daz London says:

I think Taylor Swift alone is the target audience for the GOOP website

  18. Lucy2 says:

The place sounds great and will probably be a good investment, but for 1 person who won’t be there much, it’s excessive.

  19. mar says:

wow her homes must be a lot to maintain. She is at the top of her game so good for her

  20. Tessy says:

Communities should be taxing dwellings that sit vacant most of the time at least 10X the going rate. Those people who jet in to spend a week or 2 a year in one of their vacation properties do not contribute to the community. They don’t buy groceries, gas, insurance, clothes, eat in the local cafe or go to a hairdresser in the community enough to make a difference. We have a small town nearby that they actually killed. All the small business died because it got popular with those people and its now full of vacant houses used a week or 2 a year at the most. And why does this girl need 2 apartments in the same building, I bet she isn’t going to bother to rent one of them out.

  21. Viv says:

She made all that money actually doing something, being creative and now investing wisely. Good for her!

The only thing I can’t stop thinking about is: Maintenance for this apartment must be somewhere around 10 grand a month -minimum.
