The Cut published a lengthy essay-like blind item as a tale told by a personal assistant to a single mother/celebrity/actress. You can read the full piece here – it’s very, very interesting, and offers a glimpse into how crazy some (most?) celebrities are. This PA was a live-in assistant who basically did everything for her employer, even breaking up with the celebrity’s boyfriend, smuggling drugs to festivals and read her books for her.
Breaking up the actress’s boyfriend:
I broke up with a very prominent actor boyfriend of hers. She said, “Oh, we’re done making a movie together; it’s not really going to work; I’m sort of seeing somebody else. Could you just tell him to back off and leave me alone?” And she said this over the phone, over Christmas. She told me, “Accept the date on my behalf. Take the date. Go instead of me.” So, that’s what I did. You would think sending a text is the worst — no. Sending your assistant to break up with him is the worst. He had no idea it was coming, either, which was sad. Because when I was talking to him on the phone before, he was like, “Great! She said yes! Tell her I’ll see her here; I’ll order us her favorite wine,” and I was just like, “Okay!” Ugh. I felt horrible for him. I was like, “You do not deserve this.” That breakup was two weeks into the job. That was my initiation — Oh my God, this is what I’m doing?Morning schedule:
By 7 a.m., she’d want to know everything that had happened in the news, what she should be aware of around the world. I was very well informed at that point. If she was up for a job, I’d go through the script with her. She was shooting a lot, and on those days, I would have to be her alarm, and wake her up at 4 a.m. And then later in the day I would drive her child and the babysitter to the set to visit her, and I would have to be around, in case the kid threw a fit, to take them back.The celebrity would pick up her assistant at the bar?
To escape, I would have to physically leave her house at certain times. I took a lot of weekend trips. Sometimes the nanny would let me stay over at her apartment — I would drive around the corner and hide my car and hang out at the nanny’s apartment on weekends, just to sleep. And I would leave the house and just go drink a lot. I would go down the street from her place and walk to a couple of the bars. The bar owners knew me, and they understood, because she would pick me up sometimes — they would be like, “Trust me, I know what you have to go home to. These next few rounds are on us.” I would drink, and then go back and feed her, and then go to sleep in the office.The celebrity thinks her palm reader is a therapist:
Once I got called in as an emergency because she said, “I need to see my therapist.” So I had to leave my family and drive over and pick her up, because she was like, “After therapy, I can’t drive.” That’s fine, I get it: So she’s in with the therapist, and I’m sitting there in the car, reading, and I remember seeing the therapist’s name — but she wasn’t a therapist. Oh no. She was a palm reader. She was a palm reader that we got a discount for in the gift bag at an awards show. She was a psychic.Drug smuggling:
I started to check all the details on the things I had to do for her. Like when I had to go to pick up her quote-unquote “herbs” — I didn’t realize until then: Oh crap, I’m a drug runner. She said “herbs” because she was being holistic, and I was naïve and thought it was something herbal to help her calm down. Once when we went to a film festival, I flew out early so I could lay out the clothes she would wear. When she got in, she was like, “Did you get my stuff?” What stuff? “Oh, I put some stuff in your bag.” Oh my God, I went on a f–king plane carrying drugs for you? I could have gotten arrested! You could have at least told me so I knew what I was doing, and put it in the bag that’s not checked! What are you doing to me? At least ask and say, “Hey, do you mind carrying for me?” Not that I would have said no, but at least I could have put it in a concealed location.The actress has STDs:
I would go pick up her medicine for her, all her pills, and after that I started checking every little thing to see what it was. I was like, Oh my God, I know exactly what she has now. I realized I needed to warn whoever was with her about certain STDs. I called the ex-boyfriend, and I was like, “Hey, you need to get checked out. I don’t think she’ll ever call you.” And he was like, “Oh, sh-t. Thanks.” This was seven months after the breakup.
While the drug smuggling stuff and the breaking up with the woman’s boyfriend stuff is excessive, some of the PA duties just seem rather average. I’ve worked as an assistant before (not in Hollywood but God, my boss was THE BEST) and that kind of job attracts anal retentive, highly organized people who know what they’re signing up for. A lot of this PA’s complaints just seem… I don’t know, like, she’s just bitching about exactly what her job entails.
So, who is the actress? Michael K theorized that it sounds like Kate Hudson, and that’s a pretty good guess, IMO. I’m also getting some January Jones vibes, for real. And not just because my computer iced over when I was writing this.

I think it’s Charlize. Kate doesn’t care about seeming like she is up on news & politics. She isn’t a regular at Cannes. She has also been with more musicians than actors in the last few years.
Also I’ve heard friend of a friend type of gossip that makes her sound that she’s awful in real life.

I was thinking Charlize too, also because she has never really seemed the mothering type and I wouldn’t put it past her to get a black child just for publicity. And no I don’t think every body who adopts foreign or minority babies is just doing it for attention and publicity but I do think some of them are. Someone like Madonna comes to mind as well.

@FLORC – You are right that cold sores are a form of Herpes, but it is a completely different strain to genital herpes. It is absolutely no indication of genital herpes infection if someone has cold sores. I for one have had cold sores since birth and most definitely did not get them from sleeping around (or my mother sleeping around etc).
bluehare – yeah, most people don’t know that it’s estimated that 85% of the world has herpes. People with it often test negative. A lot of carriers never experience a symptom in their lives. The ironic thing – negative testing, symptom free carriers are the ones spreading it but also the ones perpetuating the stigma that it’s a slut’s disease.
So many folks adore Theron and ignore the stories that have floated around HWood for years about her diva behavior vs her public persona. She is not a nice woman by several accounts.

Visual effects supervisor Ed Taylor was ask about working with Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, Will Smith and Charlize Theron.
He went into deal about working with Spielberg saying he was “much down to business, knew exactly what he wanted. Said that Smith was “Great and funny guy” and Angelina Jolie was down-to-earth, polite and funny.
Now when it came to Charlize Theron the only thing he had to say that “it was nice to meet her” which says a lot without saying much at all.

The PA is no longer with her. Also in the article it states that this was the first PA that wasn’t family to last longer than 6 months.
This person was not with the actress for years. She lasted longer but was not long term.

I remember when Nelson Mandela died we saw much footage of his life and the people he associated with. One of them is Theron, he praised her. They hugged and she cried, it was a very sweet moment. That is a very serious statement to make about Charlize’s views of apartheid. May I ask where you read it? It would definitely change my view of her and, tbh, I find it difficult to believe. Whenever I have seen Charlize speak of her upbringing she has always spoken eloquently about how lovely the country and it’s people are (often mentioning her nanny with whom she was particularly close). I would be really shocked to find any such statements attributed to Charlize by a legitimate news outlet because, basically, I would be shocked to find that she felt that way. To assert that she shouldn’t have been allowed to adopt her child because of statements that she supposedly made seems a great insult and stretch. Of course, if you are right then I would agree wholeheartedly with you. So any more verifiable info about this statement she made?
Of course, disliking her on account of perceiving her to be a biyotch or because she hangs with Handler is fine. I don’t care that she hangs with Handler and I like her edgy bitchiness. I also think she is extremely talented and very beautiful. My real disappointment about her is that she is involved with Penn. I keep hoping that it’s a short-lived, and deeply regretted mistake.

I agree that Charlize doesn’t fit at all. Also she used to have a huge fandom here on CB despite, and likely because of, her perceived bitchiness. I still like her despite and because of it! Lastly, I believe her acquaintance, and perhaps friendship, with Handler is what has lessened her fandom on CB. For whatever reason it seems anyone friendly to Handler is equated to a Jolie hater and thus follows that persons decrease in popularity here. It seems very “high school” so I hope I am wrong. At any rate, Charlize is truly talented, lovely, successful and, perhaps, bitchy so she would probably fit in well here!!!

The author stated that she had been hoping to get in on the production side of things. With a crappy PA job the hope is always to use it as a stepping stone to something else.
This type of behaviour is pretty standard for Hollywood and Fashion. Easiest way up the ladder is to be an assistant. You put up for the opportunities it opens up ie it’s a stepping stone to an otherwise closed industry unless you have connections, but as my first boss said to me, you don’t want to stay an assistant too long because then you are stuck and a masochist.
I could never put up with these people. I mean you have a life on your own and then you have to give it up for some crazy celebrity! I understand when it’s just for a short time, but everything else is not normal, it’s humiliating.
I agree with you. I intern at Dior (I just mostly help in the couture department and did almost nothing but me being a 17 year all it was exciting) last summer and many assistants were treated like this. I was shocked a little bit to see this but then understood this is normal there. I was appalled by that, I think people should respect others work even if they are the onesin a position of power. Otherwise you are being an idiot.

She’s never had to do a single thing for herself, momma always made sure she was taken care of. No idea how to cook or clean because someone else was paid to do it. I mean it’s pretty standard Hollywood upbringing, but Goldie is pretty lax and let her and her brother do whatever they wanted, so if they didn’t want to bathe or brush their teeth, that was their prerogative. I think Kate’s cleaned up a bit but go back through her earlier photos, girl was just an unwashed hot mess.
She always looked clean to me but her hippie chic style could prove me wrong.
The poor hygiene must run in the family. Goldie Hawn was /is FAMOUS for being a non-bathing, foul smelling celebrity.

January would have the money for a PA, but I don’t think she’s making her own movies – which is what this actress does. Its also why the PA stayed so long, because she was hoping to get into the production side.

I’m a little concerned at that little tit-bit at the end where the assistant takes it upon herself to disclose another persons medical conditions. If the actor boyfriend and her boss had been apart for 7 months, it may be that the boss was infected after they dated and therefore didnt need to inform him. Hell, it could even be that the actor boyfriend infected her. Either way, disclosing another persons medical conditions without their express approval is way worse than the stuff she claims was done to her.
STD testing is suggested every 6 months. The PA likely would have known if the infection had happened before or after dating this particular person, since the PA handled everything.
It’s your RESPONSIBILITY as decent human being to contact all the partners you’ve had between tests if something shows up in the new results. Sure, you could be contacting the very person who gave it to you, but maybe they don’t know they’re even inflected.
Disclosing another persons medical conditions without their express approval is kind of shady, sure, but I bet the ex-boyfriend is glad she did and so is every person he’s been with after.
I would say disclosing someone’s medical condition is slightly worse than planting drugs on someone. Maybe they are equal but planting drugs on someone going thru an airport ranks pretty high up there in the jerk department. They both are criminal actions though.
If she figured out they were drugs what were they. They must not have looked like common drugs for the assistant to be fooled. Maybe they were just herbs.
The excerpt skipped a few details that say why the PA was so miserable – namely that she had to live with the celebrity and be at their beck and call for 24/7. From the 4am wakeup call all through the celebrity’s random whims. Reading between the lines, it’s gotta be overwhelming to have to spend every day caring for am adult the way you would a toddler.
ETA: Though I should also say that none of this is unusual for a Hollywood PA. It would suck as a regular person job, for sure!
Yes, and you can put a toddler in time-out for bad behavior you can’t do that to a man-child or a woman-child. I guess money and power do strange things to people, but I really think you have to already have that ugliness in you to begin with though. Not all persons in power positions behave that way.
We’re not talking about everyone in power, though – we’re talking about a lot of Hollywood. It’s a group of people that share the same profession, that typically draws insecure, ‘artistic’ people. That’s not to say that every single actor in Hollywood treats their assistant like crap, but this is definitely not unusual.

I kind of agree. It’s a horrible job in some respects, cool in others and you know that when you sign on.
I feel sorry for a lot of Hollywood PA’s – they put up with a lot.
At the same time, I can’t understand why anyone would work for someone like this. I’d rather have no job than deal with someone’s over the top shenanigans.
I also think that if you take a job where you have access to someone’s private matters, you are breaking a trust by this kind of disclosure, and you’re just as bad as they are.

My first thought was Reese, actually. I know the former assistant only refers to one kid, but I think almost everything else matches up.
Or Sandra. I like her, and I’ve never head anything bad about her, but wasn’t she the one dating Matthew McConnaughey when he was arrested for smoking p*t in Texas? As for the PA job, this further confirmed that I could NEVER be an assistant to a celeb. I’m just not cut out for that type of work. I would be fired for saying “ummm you do it yourself” too often.

The only things out of the ordinary here are breaking up with the boyfriend and smuggling the drugs. Everything else sounds like ordinary assistant duties. If the celeb was really, truly bitchy and a pain to deal with, I wish the PA had given those details instead of acting as if it’s terrible to wake up early and watch the news.

Blind Items are great! They’re a lot of fun to try and figure out. Some people dismiss them as being utter nonsense, but I’ve always thought they really are the juicy tidbits that celebs don’t want known about them. After all they have to maintain their “we’re better and more perfect than ordinary people” attitude. Blind Gossip has some great ones, and they will go back to older items when they are eventually revealed.
Compared to other blinds, this PA sounds like she got off easy. Lainey had a blind from a while back where the celebrity got the assistant to walk through airport security with a baggie of coke. The most popular guess was Gael Garcia Bernal.

Even more scary is that most people don’t even know they have one and are potentially passing it on. At least this person is taking medicine to reduce her chances of infecting someone else!

Right?! And herpes too. I’m always saddened/amazed that people don’t know about these things or say “wear condoms!” as though they’re 100% foolproof. I only found out after I was diagnosed with the herp (judge away- I was with boyfriends only, got tested every 6 months, yada yada…) that the only way you know if you have them IS WHEN YOU HAVE AN OUTBREAK!!! Isn’t that insane?! All those years of getting tested, I thought the one scary STI was being looked after. Yes, you can have blood tests, but there are a lot of problems there too. One in five people are infected (a carrier) and aren’t aware as the virus can remain dormant for years.
I’m a normal woman, I have a husband, a beautiful baby and am a hard-working professional. If I can get an STI, anyone can. So before you say “eww STIs!” like an immature teenager, you have no idea who has what- you can even have something and not know. Hardest thing I’ve ever been through in my life and I don’t wish it upon anyone.
My neighbour (also a professional woman) got herpes from her then husband. He was sleeping around and ‘brought’ home several STIs to her. Sweet guy, eh?
So I won’t shame you regardless of how you aquired your STI. We all make mistakes or come by it accidentally. Shame rarely helps anyone.

I have herpes too (my ex cheated on me) and I just met a guy I really like. I’m dreading the whole “I have herpes” conversation. It doesn’t help that my some of my friends are super judge-y about herpes and how gross people with herpes are. It always makes me feel terrible.

@ Karen: Aww sweets, I feel for you!! That’s the hardest convo to have. If t makes you feel better, I had to tell 3 guys (one being my now husband) and not one of them rejected me. I just had all the facts, cried a little and let them decide what they wanted to do; put the ball in their court. I had (have) no idea how to navigate this. My doctor gave me really good advice: if he’s worth it (and you), you’ll make it work. And with all the antiviral meds, it might not even be an issue. I’m so sorry for all you’re going through; it tough and embarrassing, but it does help to talk to someone who’s been there. I know how you feel- gross and it’s like a kick in te stomach when someone makes a herp joke (and have you noticed the frequency??!). You’re not gross! You’re not the first person nor the last to have these…

It is so interesting how all of us have access to the same press info and interviews and yet come away with completely different perceptions. I have always perceived Hudson to be a spoiled woman-child that is consumed by her own special snowflake status. Between her rapid cycling of retionships and her in-your-face insistence on her hippe/boho lifestyle, I’ve always thought that she is simply enamored with herself and how “cool” she is.
BTW, I throw no shade on actual hippies or women that enjoy multiple relationships. To me, Hudson kind of epitomizes a certain selfish, bitchy/cool, spoiled rotten person that does get a lot of shade from me.
Anyway, that has been my perception. I still enjoy watching her and think she does the whole media game very well as far as likeability. Lastly, she is really pretty. But, yeah, I still don’t care for her much.
It’s funny how much I agree with you. I know it reflects my own bias. I grew up surrounded by the spoiled children of the wealthy and famous and I have encountered far too many “special snowflakes” in my life. I hope it’s not Kate and that she is a sweet hippie but I suspect she might not be.
The drug and break up stuff is over the line. But everything else sounds pretty common. I’ve always gotten the impression that is not a job for the thin-skinned. With a great boss I think it could be a fantastic job, especially for someone looking to make connections in the business, but I personally couldn’t deal with the more spoiled and demanding people.

It is not a moral failing to contract an STI. The overall prevalence of herpes is 26% at least. Condoms are not perfect; everyone does not use them every time, or correctly, and to expect perfection from people in this area is ridiculous; most people do not use them with their spouses.
All it takes to get an STI is to have sex once. Or to be raped once. They are not a mark of shame.
Great point! It bothers me that people act like STI’s are a result of wanton behavior with dirty people. First of all, most of us have (hopefully) participated in wanton behavior (even if only with our spouse) so that isn’t bad. Secondly, it isn’t only crackheads, sex-fiends, and the notoriously unclean that contract STI’s, it is simply people that have had sex. The lucky among us have had or will have sex, the unlucky among us may contract an STI because of it. There should be no shame attached.

It could be any single mother in Hollywood. My initial reaction would be to pick someone who fits the description well like Charlize Theron or Kate Hudson. However, I kinda want to go with someone whose fans would least expect to have a diva type attitude, so I’m gonna go with Sandra Bullock. I’ve always felt that Sandra has a darker side that she hides very well with the help of an excellent public relations specialist. She did marry Jesse James after all and seemed happy with him until his affairs and nazi pics became public. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is an entirely different side to her that would shock a lot of people.
I’ve wondered the same about her. She really clammed up once that marriage hit the skids, but before that she seemed very happy and pleased with JJ.
But, people really praise Sandra in a very heartfelt way. And she hasn’t dated anyone publicly since Louis came in her life.

Disclosing an STD to a previous sexual partner doesn’t seem vile and despicable to me. The health dept contacts people who are on lists of those who do have confirmed cases. I’d certainly rather do that than get arrested on felony drug smuggling charges at an airport ruining my chances for future employment and freedom…not to mention family shame. Yeah….the STD thing is definitely a better choice.

Whatever else was said, the fact that the employer hid drugs in the employee’s luggage is a seriously criminal offense. That someone would be capable of doing that says to me that the employer celebrity has to be a psychopath, truly; someone who absolutely has zero concern for the welfare of anybody else. If the assistant had been caught, she may have ended up in prison and, even if not, she’d have a permanent criminal record, which would ruin her life. That is some heavy stuff to just so casually do to another human being.
