Emilia Clarke versus Kate Mara: who has the cuter Marie Claire cover?

May 2014 - Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke and Kate Mara have individual Marie Claire covers for the May edition – other cover girls include Lupita Nyong’o, Elle Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen. With the exception of Lupita, I can see why MC decided to jam so many actresses all in one month: they’re sort of bland. I mean, I love Emilia Clarke because she is the Mother of Dragons, but her interviews are pretty milquetoast. She’s just happy to be working, I think, and she enjoys the GoT gig. Kate Mara’s a trickier person to judge though… I think there’s some sisterly rivalry between Rooney and Kate, and Kate seems hyper-aware of it. Anyway, you can read the full MC profiles here, and here are some joint highlights:

Emilia on her future: “Personally, I’d like as many children as I can pop out, I reckon. You come from a happy family; you want to create a happy family. And in the same breath, I’d like to be on stage at England’s National Theatre, doing Miller and Chekhov. Give me a Sam Mendes/Tennessee Williams combination – that would be glorious. And to be making some Oscar-worthy movies with Scorsese. I’m always looking for the hard road. That way, you remain interested and interesting. Hopefully.”

Emilia on working on GoT: “To be employed by HBO, I was like, ‘I can die now.'”

Emilia’s life away from the dragons: “I get to go home and walk the dog and no one really cares in the most glorious way. They’re more intrigued about whether people are picking up the dog muck from the path.”

Emilia’s “favorite person on the planet”: Ryan Gosling. “I don’t know him. I’ve just read this interview where I’m like, ‘Okay, you’re now officially beautiful and intelligent.'”

Kata Mara on getting rid of her red hair: “I felt relieved getting rid of red – people in my family were saying, ‘Red hair is your identity – you’ll ruin it!’ But I’m an actor. I’d shave my head if the part called for it. I love morphing into someone different; it makes you wear makeup differently.”

Mara on leaving House of Cards: “It was the plan from before we began the first season. It was definitely shocking, but I was quite mentally prepared for it. Everyone on the show was so sweet about my leaving. The nicest thing is people’s reaction that they will miss Zoe’s character.”

Mara on working with Johnny Depp & Paul Bettany in Transcendence: “For a movie this large, it didn’t feel huge. Except for the occasional explosion. A lot of my scenes are just me and Paul—intimate. My favorite kind of project. I would love to be in a love story. My favorite movies to watch are relationship dramas.”

Mara’s dating Max Minghella: “Our only issue is he insisted on buying me an iPhone, and I wanted to stay with my BlackBerry. I know I’m in a movie about technology, but I’m not interested in it at all. Nor do I pay attention to politics. I’m not the person looking for the next big thing. Just the next good role.”

[From Marie Claire]

I truly didn’t know Kate was with Max Minghella, son of the late, great Anthony Minghella. That’s cool. I like Max Minghella a lot – he shows up in surprising places. He guests on The Mindy Project as Danny’s brother and he mixes it up with various movie roles too. He’s a cutie. I bet they make an adorable couple. Meanwhile, Emilia says that none of the dudes who think she (or the Khaleesi) is sexy ever ask her out. Someone needs to ask out Emilia! Who would I put her with…? I’m trying to think. Maybe Chris Pine?

Thanks for the spoiler for those of us who have to wait for House of Cards to come out on DVD because we don’t having streaming. I’m not sorry to see Mara go. I couldn’t stand her character.

I never recognize Emilia without the blonde hair.

Can’t say I’m crazy about either cover. I used to subscribe to marie Claire, but it bores me now.

You can all skip your oj since I’m such a little glass of sunshine this morning.

    • Kate says:

I hated Zoe on House of Cards (delighted she is gone) and sort of felt like Kate Mara may have just been playing herself. I’ll have a hard time watching her in something else.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too. I saw her face and I felt dislike, which either means she was playing herself and she’s a whiny little sneak, or she’s a really good actor and has me convinced she’s a whiny little sneak. Lol time will tell.

      • QQ says:

The.way I cheered when she bit it! OMFG!! that was amazing and so well deserved, she was The Worst!

that said I NEED those star earrings with everything Ive got!

      • Rachel says:

I will fight you for those earrings QQ. I’m on my way to google star ear cuffs.

      Haaaaaaaa! ♥ Awesome.

  2. GlimmerBunny says:

I love Emilia, but she looks so much better with the Khaleesi wig! Kate, on the other hand, is much prettier with dark hair.

    • Mel M says:

Yeah. At least she’s smiling though and doesn’t have the opened mouth sexy face like everyone else likes to do on covers.

  3. Tatjana says:

    Both covers look bad.
I’ve never read an interview with Emilia. I love her now.

    • Eleanor Zissou says:

Emilia is really lovely, isn’t she?
Kate, not so much. She’s similar to Rooney.

  4. merski says:

How do you take a beautiful girl like Emilia and make such a horrible cover? I am baffled!

    • mom2two says:

Exactly! I think she’s 100X prettier without the blonde wig. And the girl does not need photoshop either. She is a pretty girl and whoever styled her and photoshopped that picture needs to be slapped. My only wish for Emilia was that she becomes a better actress, she is kind of flat in GoT (not that GRRM’s plot line for Khaleesi helps much). She seems like such a lovely person.

    • qwerty says:

      Yeah she looks fug here

  5. InvaderTak says:

Well lets talk about the Photoshop in the first one; her arms are t-rex like and her legs look like she’s had polio. Not good.

    • Penny says:

This!!! Yes they’ve somehow photoshopped her body weird. Terrible cover for such a little siren.

  6. Kiddo says:

The second cover is better because the first looks like it was done by an Uncle Terry apprentice with little to no experience in flash lighting. The wide angle lens, shot too close directly over Emilia, makes her head look disproportionately large.

  7. iskra says:

Ugh…both covers are ugly…..too much photo shop and they ruined two pretty girls with it. For me, Kate really looks better with darker hair and different make up. Emilia is pretty but this cover is really bad. She seems like a really nice person but in GOT she is terrible. Maybe she is better on stage, a lot of actors who are great in theater are bad onscreen. Maybe that is the case with her too.

    • Etheldreda says:

Her performance in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ was universally panned, so no, it does not seem that she is better on stage.

I don’t really get all the buzz about Emilia. She’s the worst actor on GoT (with the exception of whoever plays Shae, but that’s not such a key role) and imho only moderately pretty. Given that they must have had a huge casting call for her GoT role, it’s hard to believe they couldn’t’ have found a better actress.

      • Eleanor Zissou says:

Sibel Kekilli is really good in German speaking roles. And Shae is one of the rare characters who is better in the series than in the books. I hope they change her storyline. Osha is the other one.

And Kit is worse than Emilia. IMO.

      • Etheldreda says:

Yes, I have heard that Kekili is good in German. But that does not change the fact that imho, she is embarrassingly awful in GoT. I find it hard to watch her. Agree that Kit is pretty bad too – I’d say he and Emilia are on a similar level of mediocrity.

The quality of acting on GoT is quite mixed imho. Some brilliant actors – Charles Dance, Lena Heady, Michelle Fairley and Nikolaj Coster Waldau (yum!) and others such as the above who are fairly mediocre.

      • redtree says:

Maybe she’s a good actress but Dany’s line doesn’t help either. Most of it are too cheesy

      • iskra says:

really? I mean, i never saw her on stage so i can´t tell. I go to theater and some actors on stage are brilliant but onscreen their magic is simply lost. I thought that was the case with her too.
Truth is Dany´s lines don´t help her. They give her all this pretentious speeches she really isn´t able to pull out well. I was also surprised with Kit in season 4 premiere. He was better than usual…maybe he was prepared better or something but he was OK. Nothing spectacular but OK.
I really don´t know why they cast Emilia in GOT. At first Tamzin Merchant was cast as Dany and i think she would do much better…but then something happened and they replaced her with Emilia.

    • Seán says:

I think Emilia’s pretty good. She’s not quite the caliber of the above mentioned actors but I was rewatching Season 1 recently and she had some difficult emotional scenes that she pulled off very well. She was also very believable in transitioning Daenerys from an innocent young girl sold into marriage to a badass warrior queen and mother of dragons. However, since Season 2, she’s only really had to play Daenerys as a stone-faced warrior queen and her story arc has suffered somewhat because of that. I think most people are only excited for her storyline when the dragons show up.

I would have always said Kit Harrington was the worst actor in the show but he was actually surprisingly good in the Season 4 premiere. I could see shades of Ned there when he was standing up to the Night’s Watch.

Sibel Kekilli as Shae is pretty poor but I think writing plays a huge part in that. Shae is such a petty and whiny character. All Shae does is stomp around, moan and acts all enigmatic without being interesting. I was initially intrigued by how the show went a different direction than the books with her character but now I’m tired off her and Tyrion’s constant and silly lover spats.

On the great side though, Game of Thrones got a two season renewal!!!

      • mom2two says:

I think what helped her in season 1 was that the storyline was good and she had great chemistry with Jason Momoa (people may not think he is a great actor but he was perfect as Khal Drogo) and she got to play off of Harry Lloyd (Viserys her crazy brother). It seems like her story faltered when the show decided to make her all about “I have dragons” and now she alone anchors her storyline and Emilia just doesn’t have the chops for it yet. Unfortunately, GRRM’s plotting for her character is rather weak, to be honest and that’s not going to help her either.
Kit’s pretty bad too. I thought he did well in the Night Watch’s scene, he can do snarky well. But a lot of people in the cast can. The scene where Jon is talking to Sam about Robb, Kit really fell flat with that one. It came less across like he’s sad about what happened to his brother and more like someone remembering an old friend that he hasn’t seen in a while. Jon is not a character of over-emoting, I do get that, but there should have been some more emoting there. But again, I felt the show should have kept Sam silent in that scene and let Jon speak a little more…maybe to how he hoped those who killed his brother will get what’s coming to them…since Jon cannot avenge his brother.
PS: Yay to a two season renewal too!

      • Etheldreda says:

A good actor can rise above a lousy script, and imho neither Emilia nor Sibel is up to it. Agree that Emilia had great chemistry with Jason Mamoa, and this partially salvaged her in Season One, but she just doesn’t have the charisma to pull off a ‘dragon queen’ – silly concept I know, but then so many things in GoT are silly, yet the actors manage to make sense of it.

I too would like to know what happened with the Tamzin Merchant casting. She was cast in the pilot episode and then dropped in favour of Emilia. Presumably she got poor reactions in the pilot? I’ve only seen her in ‘The Tudors’ and tbh she was pretty bad in that. As with Khaleesi you might say in her defence that the role was poorly written, but like I’ve said, a good enough actor can still make something of a bad script.

IMHO Shae is just awful. Her acting is on about the level of a school drama society play.

      • Tatjana says:

Sibel isn’t given much, to be honest. Most of her lines are quite corny.
I’mnot impressed with Sophie Turner. At all. Her delivery is very flat most of the time, the only time she was good was in the scene when she was forced to look at Ned’s head.

  8. Fan says:

How about Emily Browning. I think she is more beautiful than anyone else in the business except Natalie Portman of course.

    • Eleanor Zissou says:

I find her face really weird. I know it sounds horrible, but I do. And Natalie looks stunning only when she has short hair.

  9. Adrien says:

Emilia is someone I never recognize outside GoT. Here, she looks like Amanda Peet. That could be a good thing, idk.

  10. Redheadwriter says:

Kate just bugs. Although I do actually like that B&W photo of her.

  11. Chinoiserie says:

I love what Emilia is wearing and she looks cute. But she has a bit strange expression on her face. Kate´s cover looks rather generic.

  12. GeeMoney says:

I don’t like Emilia’s cover… they could have used a better pic of her.

With that said… KHALEESI FOREVER! Hee hee.

  13. Hissyfit says:

Emilia is so cute! She looks way better with blonde hair though. I don’t know who that other blonde chick is.

  14. Sarah says:

I think people should give Kate a chance! (and Emilia but i don’t think she’s disliked really?). Kate can come off REALLY harsh, Rooney too, (is it a Mara thing?) BUT if you go on her twitter you’ll see she’s pretty down to earth, as much as a celeb can be. I think her bf Max Minghella has some part in that, his twitter is super dorky, in the best way.

  15. ~Z~ says:

I LOVE Emilia. She seems so nice too.
Kate Mara ~ Not so much.
Her face is pinched, and she almost always looks b*tchy.
She has a somewhat strange hairline too…

  16. JenniferJustice says:

If we’re talkign strictly mag covers, I vote for Emelia Clarke because she’s actually smiling rather than looking like she’s starting to say something that begins with “w”.

  17. GIrlyGirl says:

Anyone else tired of hearing about Game of Thrones?

or Verb of Nouns as I call it

  18. caitie says:

What the hell? Worst photo I have ever seen of Emilia Clarke – she is a genuinely beautiful woman.

  19. Elizabeth says:

They’re both a little meh, imo. Maybe they could try trading dresses.
