2014 MTV Movie Awards Open Post: Hosted by Hiddleston-cringes

wenn20270375

Here is your Open Post for this year’s MTV Movie Awards. Our host this evening (for the Open Post) is Tommy Hiddleston and his dorkathon from last year. I actually watched last year (as I will this year), and I was honestly startled by just how twee and uncool Tom Hiddleston was when The Avengers picked up a few awards. He made me cringe, quite honestly. But thankfully, Tommy made up for it by dancing and twirling and singing and Snake Hipping his way back into my good graces post-MTV Movie Awards.

So, will this year’s ceremony have a healthy dose of cheesball? No. Tommy isn’t nominated for anything specifically, although “Loki” is up for “Favorite Character”. It was already doubtful that Tommy would show up, but I just saw that he did fly to London to attend the Olivier Awards tonight (we’ll have those photos for you tomorrow, so do some deep breathing, Dragonflies). So: Loki’s in London, not LA.

There were some big name people nominated, and maybe some of them will show up. Jennifer Lawrence? Possibly. Lupita Nyong’o? Could be. Leonardo DiCaprio? Sure, why not. Jennifer Aniston might be there. Johnny Depp is definitely going to be there. Eminem and Rihanna will be performing “Monster” for the first time together. Channing Tatum is getting a special “Trailblazer Award” and there will be a special tribute to Paul Walker. And the whole thing is being hosted by Conan O’Brien.

The awards show begins at 9 pm on MTV (obviously), and I think MTV is doing an in-house pre-show at 8:30. I’ll be live-tweeting, I guess. You can follow my Twitter here.

I’m pretty sure that they give the awards to whoever they can get to show up. So if Jennifer Lawrence will show up, they’ll give her a few. If she can’t, then they’ll give the awards to Shailene Woodley, and if she can’t show up, then they move down the list…
If memory serves, all of the big names who show up win at least one award.

    • Huh says:

The last democratic MTV awards were when the twilight kids ruled, it seems the industry and assorted pr agents got fed up with their die hard fans sweeping everything year in and year out, and so the year the hunger games was coming out, they did away with fan voting, and instead had pr agents and studios cook up their own categories for desperado clients (see ‘the favorite dirtbag award’ won by Jennifer Aniston for whatever movie she did a couple years ago).

They also had hunger games win over twilight in a few categories before their fanbase grew to what it is today – then last yr they did fan voting again in part….this year they’ve gone back to studio and pr agent categories and nominees (no fan voting) and of course once again Aniston gets a nod for a dumb paid for award ‘fav shirtless,’ (eye roll) – does anyone out there really think there’s a contingent of preteens and teens heavily voting for…Jennifer aniston…or Jason Bateman..for anything? Come now. Lol

Mtv awards were always not serious, and now, because so many olds are trying to stay relevant by having their pr agents create award categories for them and lean on youth oriented MTV, they’re an especially painful joke. But I’ll be pulling up Rihanna and EMINEM later on youtube.

      • Camille (The Original) says:

Zac Efron won the shirtless award, so no, I guess no one voted for her in that category (or her PR couldn’t afford to ‘win’ it for her *shrugs*).

    • Isadora says:

Haha, Mila Kunis just won Best villain just because she was the only nominée who was there. And she was probably the worst villain in this category (she’s not a bad actress, I think, although I’ve only seen her in Black Swan, but I mean… Fassbender, Cumberbatch, Sutherland? C’mon.)

      • Adele Dazeem says:

Completely agree. I know Mila Kunis is the MTV demographic, but for her to win over those other performances is an absolute joke. She won over the BAFTA-winning and Oscar nominated Barkhad Abdi? She won over the Oscar nominated Fassbender? Not to mention Cumberbatch and Sutherland? Her win was utterly ridiculous….but so MTV.

      • jammypants says:

Her performance was major cringe. In fact every oscar nominated actor in that Oz movie were absolutely dreadful. Shocking really. Makes me think Sam Raimi is an awful director with actors. Good thing RDJ backed out from that mess.

  2. LadySlippers says:

When do you all at CB get breaks/holidays/vacations?????

    • Secret Squirrel says:

My posts keep disappearing into the ether… My computer I think, rather than CB censors!

Just wanted to say I’m glad Tom went to London to the Olivier awards rather than the rubbish that is MTV awards. Hope he gets to cuddle up to his favorite pillow in his favorite jimjams (can you get three piece pajama sets for men??) in his own bed for a night. I’ll just have to move my stuff over for a little while (and fix that broken window before he notices it).

  3. Macey says:

I always thought the MTV awards were about the lamest of all the award shows but I’m going to sit thru it just to see Eminem. I cant stand the song they’re doing, I think worst song on the CD imo but Ill watch since I dont get to see him much. Ill have to keep the remote/mute button close by b/c Rihanna usually sounds awful on these live shows, if her part will even be live.

    • Huh says:

Wha? I wasn’t even a hardcore Rihanna fan, but when I saw her do ‘Stay,’ featuring Mikki Echo live on The Grammys I became one…that performance was…everything….so yeah…I don’t know what you’re talking about. Also, her performance i caught on The Voice was live and also great.

      • Macey says:

I didnt see either of those but both (maybe 3x)times I sat thru LTWYL back when that was hot and she was awful, completely off key and screechy the thru the whole thing. I only see her when forced b/c she’s with Em. Look it up, I wasnt the only one complaining.

  4. lunchcoma says:

Oh, dear, I’d almost forgotten the Hiddlyhorrors of the last MTV awards. I’m glad he’s otherwise occupied on another continent.

    • qwerty says:

This guy and that Cumberbitch dude are considered sex symbols… what is wrong with some women?

      • Maria Ades says:

I’m guilty of that and sometimes I do wonder where my taste went, until I catch any of Cumberbatch’s performances. I guess his talent is what makes him so sexy. What’s underneath is more attractive than obvious ken doll handsome looks.

      • lunchcoma says:

Oh, I’m guilty of both. I like my smart dorky sorts, but some extremes are beyond even me. MTV had one of them last year.

      • Isadora says:

qwerty, yeah, I see where you come from. 😉 They don’t look like supermodels, but they are wonderful, wonderful actors, intelligent and witty. And Brits in suits, I have a soft spot for this. And while Cumberbatch is still not sexy to me (at all), Hiddleston has really grown on me to the point that I’ve become a full-blown dragonfly. I don’t know… he gives this vibe that you could actually have a meaningful discussion about great stuff with him and not only admire his physical form. I’m sold.

      • Bice says:

I love Tom Hiddleston and I regret nothing 😀

      • Hiddles forever says:

Woah I guess something is wrong with me too… I can’t stop watching a stupid Jaguar ad just to hear his voice bwahahaha

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Hiddleston is the thinking woman’s thinking man!

        I think…

      • Kelly says:

I guess we’re all defective, qwerty, since only your opinion and taste matter and are valid in this world, of course.

    • Here Here Bice. Hiddleston is the thinking woman’s pinup boy.

  5. Isadora says:

Is there an online stream somewhere?

And in my book Hiddleston can have as many awkward acceptance speeches as he wants as long as he continues to exist and wears lovely suits. Although the tie reminds me somewhat of the Bavarian flag lol.

I mostly wonder if Fassbender and Cumberbatch will show up as they are both nominated for Best villain, I think. My guess: no and no. And Chris Hemsworth? He has this absolutely ridiculous nomination for Best shirtless performance. Now THAT’S cringeworthy.

    • lunchcoma says:

I’d say there’s a 0% chance of Fassbender showing up. He hates this kind of thing. I’d give Hemsworth a 10-20% chance. He doesn’t seem to mind this sort of foolishness, but it’s not like he’s that into promoting Marvel right now, and I’m sure he’s busy with all those little children. I could see Cumberbatch showing up if he’s not working, but knowing him, he’s probably working.

      • Isadora says:

I guess Cumberbatch not because of his “overexposed” stuff lately. And the MTV awards are practically for publicity only because nobody takes them seriously lol.

      • MissMary says:

Cumberbatch is in Australia for a convention thing so nope, no Cumby this evening.

    • icerose says:

Cumberbatch came last in best character category. Tom was third but the .Neither even rivalled the top 2.

  6. Nance says:

The MTV awards was actually good in beginning of the 90s, now the nominees are a joke and it’s more a teen choice awards. I stop watching it when Twilight wins stuffs , it was more or less the death of this already agonizing show.

  7. jess says:

Lupita has the ugliest dress i have ever seen. It looks like someone glued m&ms to her sleeves. I dont find conan that funny but at least he didnt have a kardashian in his 50 celebritie cameos.

    • Ag-UK says:

It looks sort of Masai to me the colours anyway.

      • AlmondJoy says:

I came to say the same thing. The colors and beading remind me of pics I’ve seen of Masai people.

    • LadySlippers says:

I actually like her dress…can’t say the same about her shoes though.

      • Sarah says:

Yeah when people say avant garde this dress is something like I think of. I think she pulls it off and this is an event to be daring. I like.

      • claire says:

LOVE the dress. Her and Jessica Alba are two of the best dressed there. They both look amazing!

      • Violet says:

Me too (and usually I don’t care for her outfits). It is edgy but still flattering.

    • Ag-UK says:

      @almondjoy
Maybe that was the idea as she is from Kenya? The bright blue shoes a no for me.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Maybe so! I think it’s a fun outfit, perfect for an award show like this.

      • LadySlippers says:

The bridemaid’s shoes have simply got to go. But I really like her dress.

      • Delorb says:

I recall her talking about the blue color as being something prevalent in Kenya. Then whoever was interviewing her (Ellen at the Oscars?) said that from now on the color would be called, sorry can’t remember. Its become her signature is what I’m trying to say.

  8. Ag-UK says:

After 30 mins I am bored but as I am in the US at the moment might as well watch. Probably a fun party AFTER but seems dull and lame and anyone who shows gets something and seems to arrange presenters winners friends etc

  9. mia girl says:

I went to the MTV Movie Awards stood for 4 hours next to the stage and all I got was a stinking, hot face mask.
    WTF was that performance?!

    I must be getting oooollllddddd…
Off to watch Game of Thrones.

  10. Damaris says:

What is Lupita wearing? Jesus Christ … Her stylists are p—ing me off.

  11. Sarah says:

Nah Leo’s not there he’s dancing w the kids at that Coachella thing. http://www.justjared.com/2014/04/13/leonardo-dicaprios-dance-moves-at-coachella-are-a-must-see/

  12. AlmondJoy says:

Hmmm this show is pretty lame… still trying to figure out what trails Channing Tatum has blazed…

Did anybody watch Pharell’s interview that came on tonight?

  13. Jessica says:

Why is it that Conan OBrian is so angry when he speaks? It always seems like he’s so angry and yelling at the audience. It really turns me off. If he acted this way when he hosted the Tonight Show, no wonder they got rid of him.

  14. amber5ash says:

SUCKED. How utterly boring. Music was crap, none of the other acts were remotely funny. I love Eminem but what the hell? Lyrics have gone to shit. Yodeling, christ save me. My sea monkeys are more interesting.

  15. Ronnie says:

Really? I saw it and it wasnt that bad. There was a bit of awkward silence after the “Hulksmashed” thing but then the audience broke out in WOOO! And he was saved lol.

Cringe is every time Alicia Keys accepts and award. Ughhhh

  16. Lindy79 says:

The last one of these I watched was 92 or 93 when T2 won for best picture.
It was a decent enough awards show then, the categories are just…no.

I’ll be too busy catching up on GoT, Mad Men and Good Wife tonight to bother watching the repeat.
