Britney Spears & Nine Inch Nails are friendly; Reznor might cover Britney song

Anyone who came of age with their musical tastes in the 1990s probably remembers Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor is some kind of musical god (in my mind) – he writes and produces his own music, and Nine Inch Nails is composed of Reznor and a revolving door of great talent. I’m pretty bad at describing music, especially when Nine Inch Nails is such a genre-bending outfit. Let’s just call it really cool metal/trip-hop/alternative. I lost touch with my Trent Reznor addiction, but I still have really great memories of the albums Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral.

Trent sill writes, produces and performs, quite successfully, and I apologize if I don’t really know anything about him past the 1990s. Currently, he’s sharing rehearsal space with Britney Spears! Not only that, Trent and Britney are getting along “famously” – there’s even a rumor that Nine Inch Nails might pull a Lily Allen and cover one of Britney’s songs. OK! Magazine has more:

Well here’s an unlikely pairing: Britney Spears and Nine Inch Nails!

The pop singer and the hard-rock band have reportedly gotten chummy while sharing the same rehearsal space as each prepares for their separate tours.

On Brit’s official blog, NIN frontman Trent Reznor wrote, “I can hear the thumping low end of Britney Spears. It’s been a treat having them here the whole time we’ve been here.”

Apparantly Brit agrees. The singer’s manager, Adam Leber, says, “Brit has been sharing the same rehearsal space with NIN for the past few weeks and they are getting along famously. Maybe we should ask Trent Reznor to remix Circus?”

Sounds like a double dog dare to us!

Nine Inch Nails definitely isn’t above collaborating outside their music genre. Johnny Cash recorded an amazing cover of the band’s hit song “Hurt” in 2002.

From OK! Magazine

This story totally made me go “awww…” It’s very sweet. It’s a little off-topic, but did you know that Trent Reznor and Tori Amos used to date? In their first few albums, they make some lyrical allusions to one another. I’d bet that Reznor is a total gentleman, and Britney always seems like she could use the kindness of strangers.

Note by Celebitchy: There’s also a rumored collaboration between NIN and Jane’s Addiction, as Agent Bedhead has uncovered.

Trent has done loads of covers, including Adam Ant, Gary Numan, and Queen, so I guess it wouldn’t be too far fetched. I’m pretty excited by this actually. I’d love to hear a dirty industrial version of a Britney song.

P.S. Kaiser you should totally listen to The Fragile – the next album after The Downward Spiral. It’s just excellent. After that he came off the drugs and the music went a bit political and less edgy, in my opinion at least.

  2. Kaiser says:

Thanks, Lisa! I used to just love him, so I’ll check it out.

CB – NIN has collaborated with various members of Jane’s Addiction in the past. I think Trent and Stephan Perkins are good friends.

  3. caro says:

oh my god! it’s the end of the world!LOL except the cover is good!;p

  4. Trillion says:

I’m fairly positive that Reznor would be doing this as a silly, kitchy thing rather than an homage. Gary Numan, Queen are legends because they are massively talented and original musicians. You couldn’t say that about Brit, although I’m sure she’ll be “legendary” for something.

  5. Samantha says:

NIN…there is nothing that compares. You should really consider giving their later albums a listen, he is just so magical…*sigh*

  6. aleach says:

i would actually love to hear his cover of a britney song. theyre genius and im sure it would be great.
is it wrong that i think theyd be kinda cute together?? i mean, polar opposites, but still…???

  7. Elizabeth says:

I saw the Jane’s Addiction/Trent Reznor rumor on Agent Bedhead and almost fell over in excitement. Jane’s Addiction is the musical love of my life. I wouldn’t be to shocked if Trent covered a Britney Song, he comes across as a pretty amusing fellow and I could see the cover being awesome. To see you mention it on this site has made my day!

  8. curegirl0421 says:

@Lisa… I agree, his music didn’t quite have that same edge after he got off the drugs, but having been quite a fan of Trents since the very start, I’ll take the toned-down to see him looking so healthy, ya know? Love love love him!

  9. dovesgate says:

Yes, Trent and Tori used to date back in the day. I dont know much about his music but she is my favorite artist and she has plenty in her early music that alludes to him. He also sings an uncredited back up for Past the Mission on her Under the Pink album.

NIN is just awesome. I’ve been a huge fan since the downward spiral release (I was too young when Pretty Hate Machine came out). The most recent album, The Slip, he released as a free download off his website as a thankyou for sticking with him all these years and it is very good but my favorite album aside from the downward spiral has to be Year Zero. I saw him in concert in Toronto in August and it was an amazing show. He had killer lights and screens with image projection on them and interactive screens for some songs. It was amazing. I’d go again in a heartbeat.

  11. ChristinaX says:

I really love NIN’s music from the 90s, when they were more dark and grimy sounding.

I think they’d make a cute couple, and Trent Reznor would be a definite upgrade from anyone Britney Spears has ever been with.

  12. KittyKate says:

Thanks for writing about this Kaiser!
If Trent (my dear, sweet Trent) were to actually do a remix of ‘Circus’ I would totally buy it. And I’ve never even considered buying a B.S. record before!

junk573r: I was at that show in Toronto as well. Wasn’t it amazing? The lights were insane. The projection awesome. The security camera video of the couple going at it in the bathroom was a hilarious touch. Every time I see them, he’s got something bigger and better up his sleeve. Totally worth it.

  13. Ella says:

    Morons.

  14. Staci says:

That quote from Trent was taken out of context, he was being sarcastic.

“I can hear the thumping low end of Britney Spears,” notes Reznor, who has such a dry sense of humour you’re not entirely sure when it’s safe to laugh. “It’s been a treat having them here the whole time we’ve been here.”

  15. ? says:

Listen to the Fragile. I am actually currently listening to it, IMO it’s the best NIN album.

I would put it up in one of my top favorites of all time, along with Bowie, Queen, and Dog Fashion Disco.

I don’t like Britney, but I’d be really interested to hear a cover.

  16. santacruz says:

There’s that lunatic smile again…she looks better with her mouth closed…sounds better too.

  17. Alith says:

LOL @ “I’d bet that Reznor is a total gentleman”

Trent Reznor is well, well, known for f*cking groupies left and right.

  18. Because I Say So says:

NO, nO, no, and NO!!!! Trent has a sense of humor–yes, but covering BS is completely ridiculous. He covers ARTISTS, not entertainers. There is a huge difference. I loved him at Lollapalooza last year– amazing show, and I love The Fragile, Year Zero, and The Slip. I will have to revoke my NIN card if he participates in this F*&kery

  19. Malorie says:

I agree with “Because I Say So”: He is being sarcastic and is not going to cover Britney and NO, NO and NO!!!!!

  20. vixen says:

I think her new cd is the shit!! Brit always comes out on top. YOU GO GIRL!

  21. loldongs says:

Trent Reznor has officially come full circle.

    He is now culturally irrelevant.

He might as well just start doing jingles for tv ads.

  22. Tawnee says:

I thought about this and I doubt Britney’s manager would have made a public statement about the relationship without feeling comfortable with both parties to do so. His “getting along famously” claim would be a jab at nin

  23. Jingles says:

I like Britney Spears the most as music is my passion. I think it may be one of the cute couples of the world.I wouldn’t be to shocked if Trent covered a Britney Song. But nothing can say before her album.

  24. Aga says:

Trent also suffered from clinical depression and severe alcohol and drug dependence in the past – how about starting a little support group, hm?

  25. pookynut says:

The best versions of Britney songs are all covers. It’s like the people do the cover as a joke, but the songs sound really good. Check out some britney covers on YouTube.

  26. BillyP says:

what a bizarre combo, like mixing molten lava with milkshake

  27. Jingles says:

looks like Britanny’s trying to revive her career with the help of Rihanna
