Lupita Nyong’o in Oscar de la Renta at the WHCD: fabulous or dowdy?

Here are some fashion photos from Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which was actually the 100th annual WHCD. All of the Washington reporters were complaining about the lack of major celebrities at the event, but I think they got a pretty good turnout, a good mix of Hollywood, reality stars and politicos. The star of the evening, at least for fashion, was Lupita Nyong’o. Lupita wore this gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown. I LOVE IT. Oscar de la Renta is a fussy designer worn by Republican women in Washington – it’s awesome to see Lupita step out in the designer and make de la Renta look fresh and cool. Plus, the polka dots are surprisingly chic.

Michelle Obama wore Marchesa. NOOOOOoooo. To be fair, this look was a lot worse on the runway. It still looks pretty cheap though.

Sofia Vergara in Romona Keveza Spring 2014. Meh. I don’t like this.

Julianna Margulies in a vintage Jean Dessès gown. Flawless. Julianna almost always gets it right.

Cynthia Nixon wore this fancy Tia Cibani camouflage dress. What the hell?

And here’s Kristen Bell in what is probably the saddest Dolce & Gabbana gown ever. This is awful!

I feel like Sofia Vergara always wears different variations of the same thing. Loved Lupita’s look that night!

    • LadyMTL says:

She does, but I think it’s because she’s found a look that (at least IMHO) really works for her. And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

As for Lupita, I like the dress except for the peplum thingie. I mean, are peplums even a thing anymore?

      • Marnie says:

I have to agree with you on the fact that Sofia always looks good, but i’d love to see her in something flowy. I think it’d really suit her.
Also, peplums are my guilty pleasure. You can eat in them without worrying about bloat potential!

      • Fan says:

Ok Sophia, we get it. You have a great figure. Do you have to wear the same mermaid style dresses to every event. She comes across as LOOK AT ME!! Doesn’t she have a stylist who could change it up a bit?

  2. Dani2 says:

She’s gorgeous (as always) and I feel like the dress would’ve been near perfect if they’d just tailored it a bit differently.

    • M.A.F. says:

Agree. In the first picture, the side view made it seem as if she were wearing pants.

  3. Tatjana says:

Julianna looks amazing. I saw a picture with her husband, and dear God, he’s handsome.
I hate Lupita’s dress. It was said that there will be new Star Wars cast announcements. Hopefully Lupita.
Sofia’s dress is nice, but I hate that hair colour on her. Dark brown hair like in the beggining of MF looked amazing on her.
    Michelle looks meh.
Kristen’s dress is very pretty and I think it would lookk great on someone taller and with different styling.

    • Jasna says:

I love Sofia’s look, and I agree about the hair.

    • kri says:

Wow on Julianna. I mean, wow. That is how you do classic. She is amazing! I like Lupita’s look-not love. Love her though. She just shines from the inside.

    • mytbean says:

wWen I first saw the pic of Julianna I thought she was wearing micky mouse ears.

  4. K-rock says:

She’s so beautiful but that dress (especially) the top is just yuck. Blech.

  5. Kate says:

re: “Oscar de la Renta is a fussy designer worn by Republican women in Washington.” Not sure if this is some partisan slap or not — and not sure why — but it should be noted that throughout the years, Oscar de la Renta has been one of Hillary Clinton’s go-to designers.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, and I’m a Democrat and he would be my go to designer if his clothes weren’t so expensive. So there. Sort of. I’m not helping, am I?

      • Pinky Rose says:

I think most of his designs are for the ladies who launch type (my grandmother has always worn Oscar de la Renta, so that could be telling), but some of his custom made pieces are just exquisite in the craftsmanship and fit.

  6. QQ says:

All these dresses are just…walking letdowns

  7. Penny says:

Sorry, but Lupita’s dress is god-awful. A very, very tall woman could maybe make it look like something better than a homemade prom dress circa 1985, but on Lupita it’s just terrible, one of her very worst looks. Did she change stylists or something? She started out so strong but gradually her fashion choices have gone from bad to worse.

  8. Black orchid says:

She is gorgeous , She is attending the MET GALA in Prada too ,hope its smthn spectacular!!!!

    • V4Real says:

That dress Lupita is wearing looks horrible.

She needs a gig quick becasue she’s becoming just a celebrity. I was impressed with her because of her educational background and her role in 12 Years but now I’m almost over her.

She is now attending all the events that AList celebrities used to attend.

      • Pinky Rose says:

That dress she has worn today night is a MESS. Just awful. I think she wore for the edgy route, but gurl that is not the way to impress. Yuck

  9. Lucretia says:

Lupita built her reputation on that incredible orange dress. The Oscar dress was a disaster, and the others have been just average. This dress is better than anything she has worn lately. I also like the hair style, which seems a return to her original.

    • Tatjana says:

      I agree.
And why isn’t she wearing any Kenyan designers?

    • I just read her PEOPLE’S Most Beautiful article–she said that she has only chosen two of her looks—the white and gold Dior, and the baby blue gown from the Oscars….other than that, her gowns/accessories have been chosen by her stylist.

  10. Liz says:

Julianna looks good, the rest are disappointing.

“Oscar de la Renta is a fussy designer worn by Republican women in Washington”

Ouch. Oscar de la Renta is my favorite designer, and FYI, it was Carrie’s dream on SATC to own an Oscar de la Renta gown. His designs are feminine and classic and if I could afford it, I would wear Oscar every day. Admit this year has not been his best, but he has a beautiful body of work. I’m going to go cry now.

    • Penny says:

Oscar de la Renta paid for name checks on SATC, as did many other designers. Carrie actual clothes and the designers she talked up were usually miles apart.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thank you, Penny, for kicking me while I’m already curled up in a ball of despair. Any other news you’d like to share? Maybe you can find a five year to tell there’s no Santa Claus. I’m busy looking for my Xanax , my “gave up” sweat suit and some old socks with holes in them. Too bad my hair isn’t greasy because that’s how I feel now. Happy?

      • mimif says:

Sorry to laugh while you’re down, but um, laughing. *throws mimosa at Goodnames*

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Sniff. Thank you, mimi. Good to wash down the x

  12. mimif says:

Cynthia Nixon’s dress is amazing. I’m pretty sure I have the same one covering up my pile of firewood outside.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lol If only the cammo worked and we couldn’t see this dress.

  13. Hannah says:

I don’t think it was the 100th dinner, actually. It’s the White House Correspondents’ Association that had its 100th anniversary.

  14. Abbott says:

No, not “all of the Washington reporters complained” about the lack of celebs. There was a conscious effort to scale that back and put the focus on the Correspondents, ie those Washington reporters.

  15. Ashley says:

I’m just happy you can’t see Lupita’s ugly matchy matchy shoes.

  16. poppy says:

cynthia nixon’s dress is cut wrong. very wrong. i like the print but not the dress. it flatters her coloring.
oscar dresses ladies who lunch, not just republicans.
the marchesa dress, while not the worst marchesa dress, is still a marchesa dress. blech.
look at the tulle attachment on the bosom. it is offensively bad. just NO

  17. Chinoiserie says:

I actually think Kristen Bell´s dress one of the best here since the others were so bad. At least that had nice color and was flattering for her, and was good for the event. Julianna´s dress was the best. I do not understand the dots on Lupita´s dress, they ruin it. At least she did not have a purse or shoes that matched her lipstick. But she looked nice despite the dress.

  18. MissNostalgia says:

    Love Lupi’s dress!!

  19. maybeiamcrazy says:

I was scrolling down fast and mistook Lupita’s shadow as extension. I was shocked for a little while. She looks beautiful but her dress is awful and you know she is wearing matching shoes.

  20. Ag-UK says:

No her dress isn’t working for me and that lipstick either. The dress seems like it’s for a rich housewife that is older don’t care for the peplum thing either.

  21. Lucy says:

    Lupita and Julianna killed it!!!

  22. Tania says:

Thank Goodness she’s back to her original short hair.

  23. LadyS says:

I didn’t like Lupita’s dress. It seems frumpy (especially at the hem) and that shade of black is just meh for her skin tone. The polka dots don’t interest me; they look silly and on peplum? The lipstick was totally left field. IMHO she wore nicer dresses to the pre-parties over the weekend. She is still so beautiful and her arms are just AMAZING! Can someone please give her a real movie already!! She keeps going to events and being named this and that, but her IMDB page does not get any updates. I’m seriously worried about her. I hope my worry is unfounded and I’m just being ridiculous.

Sofia is boring me at this point. She’s worn this dress before. She wears this dress always. Julianna looks really nice as per usual, but nothing tremendous. Cynthia Nixon, WTH! She clearly put no effort. At least, I hope she didn’t because if that is her effort…. Kristen Bell, no, just NO! She’s too young for that dress. Not sure why Marchesa continues to be a thing. They were never any good. Always with the damn endless layers of fabric!

I think that most of these women were affected by the fact that the party took place in D.C. They all went for the politician’s boring old wife look. You didn’t feature it here, but Rose McGowan actually had an interesting dress, although a bit provocative. She still made you feel the “Hollywood” though.

  24. Anne tommy says:

Lupita is lovely, and it’s very refreshing to see someone so beautiful without massive amounts of swirly Kate Middleton style hair hanging about all over the place.

  25. LadyS says:

OK a co-worker of mine just passed by and I was looking at this pic of Lupita again because I’m really trying to endear myself to this dress, but I can’t. Anyway, my co-worker stops and says (mind you I’m black and she’s black) “She’s so pretty, but if only she weren’t so damn [emphasis on damn] dark. Too dark, poor thing!” I think I burst an artery or something because I wheeled around unable to speak and my co-worker asked me if I was feeling well. I wanted to KILL HER!! I just asked her if she was being serious and she nodded and walked away. WTF!!?!?!? Is this how stupid people think of Lupita? Is this Hollywood’s mindset as well? I want to throw something! This woman is so beautiful and talented and nice! If black people are thinking like this as well is there any hope? I’m sorry this post is totally random, but AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!

    • Damaris says:

I’m laughing at how someone could say something like that aloud – to a co-worker, at that. Side-eyeing so hard.

      • LadyS says:

Now my co-worker is giving me ugly looks because I so obviously disagreed with her stupidity. She came back later and whispered “You know it’s true!” I think she’s trolling me. Waaaaaat da fu**ity f*** f***!!!

  26. Mamma Mia says:

I don’t know how others feel but I am Caucasian and I think her skin color is absolutely gorgeous, as is she.

  27. joan says:

Except Cynthia Nixon, these were appropriate to the setting — as a plunging neckline is NOT.

  28. janet says:

Lupita’s dress is 80’s ugly. I don’t find her attractive at all.

  29. brionne says:

Michelle Obama’s dress is nice but I feel like she’s done white, off the shoulder gowns before. I’m ready for Malia to attend a few of these things and show her flair.
