Naomi Watts in ombre Givenchy at the Met Gala: striking or strange?

Beyond Fashion Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Last night’s Met Gala, in honor of the late British born designer Charles James, saw a huge turnout. We’ll be bringing you the fashion throughout the day. Unlike last year’s ill-executed “punk” theme, it was all about glamour this year, as James was known as “America’s first couturier.” Still, some women took risks, and this was the place to do it.

First off we have the lovely Naomi Watts in a bizarre ombre Givenchy gown that tapers to a see-through skirt. There’s a V shape right over her crotch area and the dress has a kind of avian/fish feel, with a scaled overlay that could pass as feathers. I might actually like this dress if the skirt wasn’t transparent, but as it is there’s too much going on. Compare this very daring look to how Naomi was dressed just the night before, at the Glaad awards. At least she switched it up and took risks.

In contrast, here’s Hayden Panettiere in a Dennis Basso strapless ball gown with a huge skirt, looking very cookie cutter but still gorgeous. Look at how happy she is! That dress actually has a giant flower across the entire front, which is unique and clever. It’s rare to see a pattern that takes up an entire gown like that. I love her perfectly constructed slightly messy upswept hair.

Dakota Johnson showed off her 50 Shades hair in a navy Jason Wu gown that was a bit too 70s for me. I think it’s the shiny nipple-baring top coupled with the spaghetti straps and high gloves. It’s all very disco meets couture.

Lake Bell was much more refined in a strapless red Tommy Hillfiger gown that wasn’t too fitted or loose. This looks amazing on her. The band of contrasting fabric on the bustline is mirrored in the incredible fishtail train. This was probably my favorite dress out of this current handful. Lake was there with her husband of just under a year, tattoo artist Scott Campbell.

Meh, none of these dresses do anything for me

  2. Anna says:

Dakota looks like what Grey would out Ana in. Playing dress-up, not being herself.

  3. AG-UK says:

Who pays for all these people to attend the £25k a ticket ball. Half I have NO CLUE to who they are nor do I want to but I like Naomi’s dress but after seeing most of the photos same thing, bandeau, trains, big skirts and some just look awful.

  4. Jessica says:

    I can’t get past Dakota Johnson’s nips. That’s all I see.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m not trying to be argumentative, and this really isn’t directed at you, but when did nipples become such a shameful thing? I think a lot of female celebs dress in ways that are cheap and tacky looking, and don’t wear underwear, and have everything cropped and hanging out, and show side boob and under boob and nobody cares, but if you can see the outline or suggestion of a nipple we’re supposed to blush like virgins and get all upset. Breasts have nipples. Why is that a big deal? It seems so hypocritical to me. Again, not directed at you personally.

  5. Tanguerita says:

    Lake’s dress is beautiful

  6. Amanda says:

I think Naomi’s dress is stunning, but not right for her. Her coloring and petite frame don’t stand out. I think Charlize would have been stunning in this and could have carried it better- it’s meant to be a dramatic look but it’s not on Naomi ( Altho she looks pretty).

    • Maggie says:

Hayden looks lovely and her dress, the style and the colour was perfect for the theme of the Gala.

I think Naomi is beautiful but that dress is just awful and that trend of sheer skirts is just ugly.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

        +1

I would normally agree with you regarding see-through dresses, but for some reason I love Naomi’s dress! Doesn’t it give you a fairy tale vibe – a mermaid about to become human or something? There is something quite romantic and artsy about it, not too sure exactly what though 🙂

    • Dubois says:

Naomi’s dress looks like something Heidi Klum would wear.

  7. als says:

    Hayden’s smile is the beeest!

  8. blue marie says:

The Black Swan dress on Naomi is different, I like it but Naomi’s face is too orange.

  9. lucy2 says:

    No more sheer skirts!
Lake and Hayden look pretty. Dakota’s look is a mess.

  10. Dani2 says:

Hayden’s look is the best here for me, and I agree with what a poster said upthread that Dakota looks like she’s playing Anastasia here.

  11. GiGi says:

I hate that thing Lake Bell is doing with her shoulders. Why!?!?!

  12. Kath says:

Good lord, is there a competition among designers to see how many women they can convince to wear their fugly, see-through, knee-exposing atrocities? Beyoncé, the lip biter, and now this.

  13. MourningTheDeathOfMusic says:

I am not liking Naomi’s dress at all. And side note, what’s up with the batman symbol-like panel on her pink trousers from the night before?

Dakota’s dress appears that while it was being made, the person creating the top portion didn’t consult the person working on the bottom. Those gloves are the strike three on this.

    I absolutely love Lake’s dress.

  14. daisyfly says:

Every Black Swan outfit in one!
    Junior Prom 1987.
    Someone stole her top.
    Pregnant lady in red.

  15. poppy says:

this is a sad showing. the red dress is the best of these but not good on red carpet.

  16. TG says:

I know I am in the minority here, and I almost hate myself for it, but I can’t help it I am obsessed with Naomi’s dress. I can’t stop staring at it. It is stunning to me. Now about that Dakota girl. She looks so common and not the least bit attractive. I guess she is proof the nepotism can get you places. She had a very forgettable face. I haven’t seen her acting skills so maybe she is good and I am all wrong.

  17. MonicaQ says:

Scott Campbell’s tattoo work is amazing. That’s really just about all I got because I don’t care for these lol.

  18. Jenna says:

Okay, bear with me, maybe it’s the impending doom of knowing once I hit submit, I will have to leave the safety of Celebitchy and go pick up my mother in law for her doctor’s appointments then on to hospice for a death watch over her husband but…

if the Met Ball’s THEME is black & white, and Anna Wintour is some kind of frozen hell god of vengeance with the power of the whip known as “Vogue”…. why does it look like barely a quarter of the people who, supposedly sit in twitching desperate hope to be invited (to hand over $25K for the privilege. Each.) now seem to basically say ‘to heck with THAT’ and wear almost anyone other THAN the theme? It seems that in the past, people tried really hard to slavishly follow what was ordered by Wintour but lately… I mean, okay. Navy. Sorta in line. Cream? Ditto. But when even a non-identity only has her ‘fashion girl’ side to lean on now like Blake Lively over in another blog post is in PINK and Lake Bell (another B ish actress) is in blazing scarlet (to be fair, gorgeous color), has Wintour and by extension Vogue finally been revealed as nothing more then a gasping woman behind the curtain and the power of Oz is no more?

    • Bridget says:

Where are people getting the idea that the theme was “Black and White”? The theme was “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” – James was famous for opulent, super structured ballgowns, like the de la Renta and Posen ones you saw this year. Basically, the theme was ballgowns, and the dress code was supposedly White Tie for the men, but that’s still not the same as a black and white theme at all. Plus, the theme is always up to interpretation by the designers.

  19. Size Does Matter says:

Oh, Naomi, with the two grey peens dangling from your lady garden. No, just no.

  20. Maggi says:

Hayden looks adorable, not too try hard and it suits her. Naomi’s dress is a miss. I actually like Dakota’s look, it’s sexy and relaxed. I don’t think the gloves look right with it though.

  21. Longhorn says:

Naomi’s dress would look better on someone more statuesque . And Dakota looks like she got her dress at Wal-Mart.

  22. Helvetica says:

    Naomi’s dress/design is exquisite.

I actually like the Dakota’s dress. It’s fun and whimsical.

    Lake’s bump is adorable.

  23. Heather says:

Lake looks beautiful! Love the necklace with the dress.

  24. whyamireadingthis says:

I think Naomi looks beautiful – the dress is unique and her make up is flawless. Dakota Johnson looks good from the waist down.

  25. silly you says:

    well done, lake bell.

  26. Kosmos says:

Ohhhhh, I LOVE Naomi Watts, but yuck on that hair style and the dress….NOOOOO! She’s actually beautiful and this dress is way too complicated for her. You are not supposed to let what you’re wearing take all the attention away from you. Besides, again, I do hate that sheer-panel dress look, and then the fading colors, geez. Makes me want to scream, “Take It Off!!” Hayden looks natural, sensible and safe, at least, no problem here. Dakota looks kind of tacky, maybe, too many different things going on, but also not formal enough, and the hair could use some work.
