Lupita Nyong’o in Prada at the 2014 Met Gala: insane, terrible or avant-garde?

wenn21320809

These two ladies are kind of my choices for the worst fashion disasters of the evening. And I haven’t even looked at all of the women, but OH MY GOD. Lupita Nyong’o wore Prada for the 2014 Met Gala, and this is how it turned out. My opinion on Prada in general: while I loved Lupita’s ice-blue Prada gown at this year’s Oscars, I generally think Prada needs to get out of the gown business. Prada almost always has darting issues, tailoring issues, color issues and now we can add one more complaint: sometimes Prada veers into a complete clusterwhoops of insanity.

I can’t even begin to unpack all the WRONG in Lupita’s look. Part of it is that she’s styled poorly, which wouldn’t be a crime except for the fact that Lupita almost always looks stunning and occasion-appropriate. This is neither. A brown tank dress underneath a neon-green bejeweled net… WITH FEATHERS?!?!!?!?!?! With a bejeweled headpiece. And old-lady shoes. And a matching clutch. What the sh-t were her stylists smoking when they looked at this and said, “Fabulous”?

As for Lena Dunham in this Giambattista Valli. She’s just trolling us, isn’t she? The bangs, the awful dress, not being able to find figure-flattering clothes. It’s really not that difficult, you know. You just have to choose a designer who isn’t known for designing short, puffy party dresses for Jessica Biel. Look at Jessica Biel’s body, Lena. Did you think you would be able to wear the same kind of silhouette as Biel?!

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo….Lupita, why?!!!

    • V4Real says:

Is she supposed to be a peacock? Somebody tell this woman that the headband thing is dead and so is the Gumby hair style.

As for Lena, no words are necessary.

      • Suzanneg444 says:

Seriously…were those two competing for the worst possible outfit EVER. Lean-not should never, repeat, never wear short, strapless dresses. EVER. I love her in her HBO series but she needs to keep it covered.

    • JudyK says:

That was my initial reaction as well, but, let’s face it, she can get away with anything…even making this silly outfit a conversation starter!

      • kri says:

OMG!!OMG!! My beauteous maximus Lupita!! Who did that to her? KRIS JENNER!! Only she could do domething so evil! Maybe she hypnotized Lupita and made her wear this?! WTF! Okay, I’m calm. This sh*t looks like it cam from Party City’s discount “Flapper” bin. This belongs at a rave. Help me, my vision is going darrrkkkk….

    • Size Does Matter says:

Lupita looks as if either: 1) she just escaped from a dress embellishing therapy group at the mental hospital or 2) she ran straight from a Poison Ivy audition to the gala.

    • Lupita looks like she got lost on her way to the hippie convention….

My first thought was that she’s trying to remind all of us that she was considered as Tiger-Lily in the Peter Pan reboot…..

      • Arock says:

I thought maybe she got a different invitation than everyone else- like a singing telegram to a gatsby party.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

The theme is classic Hollywood … she’s doing a variation on the Roaring Twenties. The feathers … the head band … right?

      • Pinky Rose says:

@Emma. No, the theme is not classic Hollywood. It is an exhibition about American Couturier Charles James. I don’t think his clients like Milicent Rogers or Barbara Hutton would wear this tacky mess.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Pinky Rose, who wrote: “@Emma. No, the theme is not classic Hollywood. It is an exhibition about American Couturier Charles James. I don’t think his clients like Milicent Rogers or Barbara Hutton would wear this tacky mess.”

I was actually talking about the notion of a ‘variation on a theme,’ which doesn’t necessarily have to be ‘literature’ and can be abstract or detailed. As for Classic Hollywood … I was going on what Kaiser said in her Beyonce article about the 2014 Met Gala theme:

“I do like that Beyonce and Jay-Z stuck with the theme, which was supposed to be black-and-white and old-school glam.”

‘Old School’ means classic to me.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @Pinky Rose …

Sorry, busy day at work. 🙂

What I meant to say was: “… which doesn’t necessarily have to be ‘literal’ and can be abstract or detailed.”

    • Cazzee says:

It’s a joke, and it’s hilarious. Look at the expression on her face in that third photo!

She is pranking the fashion crowd and having a great time doing it.

      • mercy says:

You may be onto something there. She’s definitely having a good time! I think that’s part of what makes the look almost work on her. But the headband was a bridge too far lol…

      • Joh says:

I agree, and if nothing else she stands out. Hard to be a wallflower in neon green feathers!
It reminds me a bit of Josephine Baker and also seems a bit Afro-inspired.
        She’s brave.

      • CN says:

The only person she is pranking is herself! The outfit is hideous. Let’s just acknowledge that and move on.

      • AmandaPanda says:

        1. If she’s pranking, it’s working – look at the face of the front row photog in that last pic of her – it’s like, *sharp intake of breath*

        2. If I had a body like that id probably wear the feather netting everywhere, minus the slip

3 LOSE THE HEADBANDS, girl. I hated the oscars one and I hate this one too.

    • mercy says:

Call me crazy, but I’m actually digging everything but the headband. The headband is stupid enough that it ruins her whole look. But I really love the vibrant colours juxtaposed against the rich brown, and the shoes!

Oh Lena…she always seems to pick the most ill fitting dresses. She could do a lot better, but at least she seems to be having fun with fashion.

      • ScrewStewrat99 says:

I’ll admit, I actually really like Lupita’s outfit. Even the headband.

      • Greata says:

I love it! She looks confident, comfortable, and seems to be having a grand time. Go Lupita!!!

      • kay says:

glad to find you three! add me in. 🙂 in my opinion it works. all of it. it shouldn’t but it does.

      • Colu says:

        I love it too!

      • margo says:

and its appropriate for a met gala

      • Sarah says:

Yeah the headband takes it into a costume-y realm. I could have done without the feathers and more sophisticated styling. But heck at least she wasn’t boring like everyone else

      • vangroovey says:

I love it. ESPECIALLY the headband. I’m having some serious Olivia Newton John flashbacks…and I’m OK with that.

      • Mazunte says:

I love it too. It’s edgy crazy and looks great on her. The shoes are beautiful.

      • Barbie Doll says:

Count me in…I also like the outfit!

      • Nina W says:

I like it too but it has too many feathers for my taste, if they had dialed back the plumage, the gems would have been enough sparkle and it would be less costume-y. I like how different it is and it flatters her figure. Lena’s dress does not flatter her, she could look so much better, it’s a shame she’s sticking with dressing to traumatize.

      • chrissie says:

You’re not alone. I actually like the look too.

    • Delorb says:

Love Lupita’s style, but this is a miss. A huge miss. And is that an afro puff? The less said about Lena, the best.

  2. LadyMTL says:

    Seriously, WTF? I just can’t…WTF?

Ok, I know this is the Met gala so you can go a bit nuts / out of the box but Lupita, what were you thinking? At least take off those silly feathers and that stupid headband thing!

    • Nicolette says:

SMH. This was the look I was most disappointed with.

    • Mia4S says:

I’m sad because last year’s theme was “Punk” and this look would have KILLED! This year was Charles James (think 1950s gowns): she and the others who completely skipped the theme just look sooo out of place. I will say this, at least she’s not boring unlike 85% of them last night!

      • HH says:

OMG – THANK YOU! This is EXACTLY what I wanted to point out. The point of the Met Gala is to have fun with high fashion. It’s where you should wear the avant-garde pieces. The pieces that some say are only suitable for the runway are the pieces you can wear here. Some hit the mark. Some miss the mark. BUT if you’re outfit would also be appropriate at the Oscars/Golden Globes/(insert any other standard awards show), then you’ve missed the entire point of the Met Gala.

      • Black orchid says:

ITA, none of them stuck with the theme ,neither Lupita’s stylist ,norr that Stella mc cartney gang ,nor Chanel , they all seemed to be showcasing their own styles rather pay homage to Charles , sadly the ones who did manage to stick to the theme are being called out for ugly fashion ,i found this link where his real works were exhibited ,and most of his works resemble disney princess ball gown rather than A lined skirts with crop tops or strange flapper dresses
        http://gothamist.com/2014/05/05/photos_charles_james_amazing_gowns.php#photo-3

  3. Frida_K says:

I could see this on Shailene Woodley, but on beautiful Lupita?

    Nooooooo…….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Dani2 says:

This is the one look of the night that really disappointed me, I love her but I can’t deny that this look is disappointing as heck. It looked better in motion though.

  5. QQ says:

our Nyongo overlord looks avant garde, which.. This is where you’d wear this fantasy… I wish for more or the hair tint in a diff light! It was purple last night!!! Whooo this girl

i have NOTHING for Lena Dunham and her ” arent i sexy” face

  6. BeckyR says:

    Not good. At all.

  7. LadyJane says:

    Lupita Wears a Dream Catcher.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

A dream catcher from King Lion!

    • Soulsister says:

LOL. I say yuck to both of those dresses

      • janie says:

Thumbs down and broken on both! Good grief what disasters. They looked like Halloween costumes, both of them.

    • Godwina says:

My first thought, too. It verges on culturally insensitive. I won’t be the only person who sees what’s influencing that, however much some people will roll their eyes about “appropriation.” The way such things have been in the news lately, you’d think wiser dressers would just step off for a while.

      • AG-UK says:

        @Godwina

No you are not. I had a vision come to mind and thought no not good.

      • GiGi says:

I’m Native American, but I really did not get that from Lupita’s dress at all. It does have tribal elements, certainly, but tribal from where? Africa, North America, South America? It also looks pretty directly influenced from the 20’s/flapper style. I’m all for cultural sensitivity, but to say that this dress was a miss because it’s supposedly insensitive is really a bit of a stretch.

      • AG-UK says:

        @Gigi
I didn’t get the Native American element from the dress African tribal yes. I don’t know it’s just an odd dress maybe the see thru bits.. I am black and there is no way anyone could put me in that. Maybe it’s just ME.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

To me it looks like they were going for a sort of Josephine Baker homage. But it just ended up a hot mess. They threw the weird ribbon on at the end like “why the h*ll not!” I am seriously questioning Lupita’s fashion sense at this point, though she gets it right 90% of the time so am willing to excuse the Met Ball MADNESS just this once. This is Madonna levels of Met insanity.

      • LAK says:

I am with Gigi that it is referencing flappers. Josephine Baker comes to mind.

If the dress was fully lined, with a matching under dress in pale colour, it would be straight out of 1920s. (full disclosure: my BFF is working on a 1920s flappers and such project, so i’m currently surrounded by 1920s everything)

I love Josephine Baker, and I find it a pity that when she’s referenced, naked Josephine is always chosen.

      • MonicaQ says:

It’s pretty 1920s “Great Gatsby” meets Africa, at least that’s what I got. So I’m going to respectfully disagree on the cultural appropriation here.

      • tracking says:

@godwina. I agree. My first thought was “otherizing” and exoticizing–in part due to the fact that it’s so OTT and unflattering. But it looks like she was having fun!

  8. KattyKitty says:

Gah wtf get DoneHam off the red carpet.

I may not be able to eat breakfast this morning due to these images.

  9. Megan says:

Out of everything I’ve seen, lupita definitely wins worst dressed. She looks like she got wrapped up in a fishing net

    • capepopsie says:

A fishing net that also had been used to Catch birds in.
Some of them lost their feathers!
      😉

  10. maybeiamcrazy says:

Lupita’s matchy matchiness is killing me! These are awful dresses.

  11. Janet says:

Was this supposed to be an ugly dress contest? It’s a toss-up which of the two looked worse. Dunham always looks bad IMO but Lupita… WTF was she thinking?

    • Jenna says:

If not a showdown between the two for ugliest dress, I think it might actually be Lupita trolling us all, not Lena. For months all anyone has been saying is how there is NOTHING this beautiful woman can’t wear (and I hasten to say that I think she is not only stunning but a truly talented young actress) and this seems like her “Oh, ReAlLy?” proof that sometimes, even being stunning just isn’t enough to save a dress.

Congrats Lupita, we will all stop gushing about how you are a flawless fashion girl and instead start concentrating on your acting talent. Because obviously, unless there is a massive head injury that could explain agreeing to wearing this, or a family member being held hostage… this is just insane. And bad. Sometimes insane and quirky can win through… this has no chance for help.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ok, maybe I’m still asleep, but I kind of like Lupita’s outfit. The headband, no, and the shoes are awful, but her shoes are always awful. I can’t explain it, but I think it would be cute at the right event. Maybe the fisherman’s ball.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      LOL

    • Esmom says:

I actually don’t hate it that much either, but maybe it’s because she can make anything look good.

Lena’s look, on the other hand, makes me want to throw my computer out the window. I’ve said this before but I just can’t with her.

      • Alicia says:

        @Esmom:

That’s pretty much my stance. The dress is awful but Lupita makes it look somewhat decent.

However, she has designers begging to dress her and this is what she chooses?

    • Black orchid says:

Neither do i , in an interview she said “it was inspired by Charles’s Taxi dress “, perphaps her stylists were trying to channel Josephine baker , i guess whats wrong with the dress are its colours and that hideous brown slip ,maybe if it was in a differrent colour o material that dress would have been eyecatching

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      You need coffee, my friend.

      This dress is TERRIBLE.

People keep complaining about the headband but that’s like, the least offensive part of the ensemble to me.

    • Kristen says:

@Good names – I actually really love this on her! Doubt anyone else could pull it off, but Lupita looks like she FEELS beautiful in it, so she’s rockin’ it…

    • mercy says:

Agree about the headband, but I kind of really love the shoes! It’s a fun look, and proves she can look beautiful in almost anything. 😉

  13. Original Tessa says:

Lena’s body is almost worse in clothes than it is naked. I know that’s mean and against the rules of feminism, but my eyes!

    • Froggy says:

You said exactly what I was thinking.

    • mercy says:

Not everyone has to be a model and she obviously doesn’t need fashion to complete her, but she seems determined to sabotage her unique beauty.

    • kri says:

@Tessa it’s not against the rules of feminism it’s against the rules of “sisterhood”. No, but really-I’m not going to carp on a chick who doesn’t have a “hollywood thin” bod, cause I am so far from that myself. But if I was famous and wealthy and invited to these things, I would find the styles I know would flatter my good points, a top tailor, and downplay my many flaws. Lena Dunham always does the opposite. She makes herself look unattractive.

  14. Tanguerita says:

Dunham looks like she is holding in a fart. And Lupita might have started to take herself too seriously as a fashion icon. You aren’t, girl. And her passion for matching everything with everything is getting worse with every red carpet.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Dunham makes me ill. It isn’t her size it’s her lack of taste. Horrible horrible horrible.

  15. lily says:

Lupita lost her mojo after the Oscars. Thank God she has this gorgeous face!

  16. Tatjana says:

Sweet Jesus, what was Lupita thinking? At least her eyeshadow doesn’t match.
    Lena doesn’t look that bad.

    • Zima says:

I like Lena’s dress, but her hair is bad.
I don’t understand why Lupita constantly shows her cleavage and legs which are not that great. She’s turning into a celebrity.

    • L says:

Lena’s dress is at least semi on theme. I can see the Charles James influence. (Structured gown-with a modernized hem) But the hair. Ugh.

I know there was a ‘decorations’ portion to the theme. Maybe Lupita thought that was the main theme?

  17. Samantha25 says:

I don’t know what Lupita and Prada were thinking. It may have worked somewhat if the dress was long and green. I guess she was going for a flapper look and it didn’t work. Lena always looks bad to me.

  18. blue marie says:

Ohh no, I don’t like Lupita’s look at all. Those feathers are awful, she looks like she should be celebrating St. Patty’s Day.

And it doesn’t matter what Lena wears, she always looks uncomfortable. Is it a size issue? Does she just need to go up a size or two? I guess it fits, but there’s something off.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

She doesn’t know how to dress for her body at all. She really doesn’t have to look this awful all the time.

      • ~Z~ says:

I SWEAR she tries to look horrid, and she is so damn successful at it. She truly makes me sick.
Every single time I see her it’s like she is daring someone to say how horrible she looks.
Strapless is not for people with slumping sagging ugly shoulders.
I’m sorry….The more I see of her, the more I just want to barf.

  19. Freebunny says:

Lupita lost it at the end of the Oscars campaign, she had made very bad choices since.
I don’t know where her career is going but it doesn’t look good.

  20. Illyra says:

I think if Lena Dunham took some finishing lessons she’d be a million times more attractive. Her posture is terrible.

  21. Crank says:

Lena’s is worse, at least Lupita is having fun. I f—–g can’t stand Lena Dunham…she needs to stand up straight and find appropriate clothes.

  22. Nighty says:

What’s with the feathers in the dresses…. Did I get the theme wrong? Was it “poultry”?
God, drop the feathers and the tulles and so on… Geeee…

  23. Dimebox says:

I’m so horrified at Lena’s disaster that I’m strangely calm about Lupita. I think she looks like she really had fun, even though she looked like a drag queen’s vision of Big Bird.

  24. Olivia says:

Lena, UGH. There is no saving this girl.

With Lupita, I feel like it MIGHT have worked if they’d taken off the stupid headband, given her some basic brown, satin, pointy-toe pumps, a nice brown/nude manicure, diamond or emerald stud earrings, and called it a day. There is just WAY too much happening with the look otherwise. Terribly disappointing.

  25. Esti says:

Lupita is just a trainwreck here. I don’t even understand how that happened.

I actually like Dunham’s quite a bit. It’s a cute dress and I think it fits her well. No, she doesn’t look like Jessica Biel in it, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad look for her.

  26. Lucretia says:

I’m sick of Lupita the celeb, hanging out in all the right places, seeing and being seen. She has made terrible post-Oscar choices, and is about to be famous for being famous. Reality show next. That being said, the gown? Short cute brown dress surmounted by fishnet and feathers–nice green color–I don’t hate it. It’s a bit tacky, but somehow I don’t hate it.

  27. HHazel says:

Lupitas “dress” is so awful it’s not even funny seriously a net with feathers on it?????????
But she gets a point for sticking to her usual style of horrible shoes and matchy matchiness that is as awful as it has ever been.

Lenas dress would look better if it was longer the short version isn’t working.

  28. AG-UK says:

If they were going for flapper couldn’t it be more of the Boardwalk Empire look? just no… and I said this on another thread no one but NO ONE could make me wear this (arms folded shaking head) I don’t care how much the stylist is getting paid. Hell to the NO. I don’t think anyone could make this look good.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have this vision of you sitting in your slip with your arms crossed, shaking your head emphatically and scowling while your stylist is down on her knees, begging you to wear the fishnet dress. But it has feathers! No, no, hell to the no. Lol

      • AG-UK says:

Yep that would be me like a 2 year old. I don’t even think I have seen this dress in photos in s/s 14 or whatever.. Maybe it could look better if the person was 5’11?? she is quite petite but I just think it looks weird. My first impression was what is it before I even really looked at it. I asked my friend as he is in PR and was there.. maybe it looked better close up?? 🙂

    • LAK says:

They are going for Flappers in Paris. Josephine Baker, the follies, Evelyn Vaugh’s ‘Bright Young things’ who inspired his novel Vile Bodies.

EDIT: appropriating MonicaQ’s description: ‘The Great Gatsby meets Africa’

      • AG-UK says:

If they were going for J Baker they should have looked closer at some of her old photos. Yes MonicaQ’s description is accurate.

  29. Lark says:

Horrible. Easily the two worst dressed of the night, although Lizzie Olsen’s ice dancing outfit with yellow heels was pretty atrocious. What were they thinking? Lupita could have gotten ANY gown or high end designer. It just doesn’t make any sense. It looks like a literal costume. I know people don’t adhere to the theme, but this is so far off the theme it’s not even funny. She looks like she is wearing badminton shuttlecocks on her dress.

  30. nora says:

1 Lupita is not in the theme of the evening, the dress is ridiculous
2 I find that after Oscar is not well manages when Marion Cotillard won his next morning she had already started shooting a movie Lupita should have done as Marion accept small roles at the beginning to make his hole hollywood because do we see a lot of red carpet and not much make fims c is not good because I’m afraid that his “moment” happens and that it does nothing

    • margo says:

you are right. lupita cant afford to be too choosy. hollywood is harsh for women black or white

  31. lucy2 says:

Oh Lupita. I love her and she’s gorgeous, but this is just TERRIBLE.

I think I audibly gasped when I saw Lena’s. It’s like she said “let’s go for the most unflattering lines ever!”. With a long skirt it might have been cute, but…just no.

  32. Jegede says:

    Lawd have mercy

Lupita seems to appreciate that it IS a Costume Gala but then missed the memo on the theme.
    I can’t even……………………………………………………………………………………………

  33. Dawn says:

Oh that is a horrid dress. And so is the other one. Two very ugly dresses. Yuk.

  34. Nanea says:

Something nice: the color of Lupita’s clutch. She should have had a real, occasion-appropriate dress in that color, not just the fishnet.

Someone should tell Lena that there are hairstylists out there. Someone else should tell Lena that bare shoulders don’t go with all body types.

(Pet peeve of mine, most brides haven’t heard that one either)

  35. allons-y alonso says:

    IT BUURRRRRNNSSSSS US, PRECIOUSSSS

  36. Lindy79 says:

I think everyone on CB could do a better job than Dunham. WT actual F?

I think Lupita got punked and told it was a Gatsby theme.

  37. Jackson says:

    Just terrible.

  38. daisyfly says:

Peter Pan net and Haus of Frau.

  39. Sabrina says:

Lupita’s outfit is terrible. She should seriously consider firing her stylist or at least get a second opinion.

  40. Karen says:

    Awful, just awful.

  41. snark says:

Lena needs to stay far away from the strapless gowns. Too much Pillsbury Dough-Boy going on here. And that posture! Geez…

  42. Hiddles forever says:

Maybe they thought they were going to the Rio De Janeiro Carnival.. Someone should have told them it was in February though, wrong month…..

  43. magpie says:

I said this else where but this was one year where the theme was conservative and those doing conservative hollwood glamor looked the best and most in place. In previous years you got points for being creative, but not this year.

Lupita needs to get her next project signed pronto before another fashion miss.

  44. NewWester says:

If Lupita’s career choices are like she chose this dress, girl is in trouble! But on the bright side green is a nice colour and if she was ever stranded on a island she could use the dress to catch fish. It is a shame Mrs Howell, Ginger or Mary Ann did not pack a dress like that when they were stranded on Gilligan’s Island

  45. Sarah says:

Hahaha bless both of them! Lupitas stylist really had a bad day! Totally wrong dress for Lena.

  46. Tig says:

This Prada ensemble is a disaster. I really don’t know how it could have been salvaged. It looks like a dress fashioned out of pieces from a elementary school art class department.

I guess Lena’s approach is- if I like the dress on the hanger, I’m wearing it, regardless of how it looks on me!

  47. Nelly says:

    Terrible

  48. Jen says:

Everything about Lupita’s look is HIDEOUS.

  49. Renee28 says:

    Who did Lupita piss off?

  50. LAK says:

    Speechless!

    Colour is good though.

  51. Ag says:

at least lupita’s pretty – bless her. can’t say the same about lena…

  52. cro-girl says:

Lupita’s just getting bored of dressing up now. She’s still mesmerizing.

Lena… wtf. Who put her in strapless? Who?? Why does she look like she’s pinched in the middle and her hip bones want to desperately connect with her nipples? You cant wear what you want Lena, you cant, same with 99% of the population.

  53. marnie says:

We should all pretend to love Lena’s dress because she wants us to hate it.

  54. only1shmoo says:

The designers of Prada hate women, otherwise they wouldn’t have such an unfailing habit of designing unflattering clothes!!! There, I said it.

  55. poppy says:

the dress is fabulous. the skin tone slip is AWFUL. it needed to be longer and a different color. AWFUL. and the headband doesn’t even fit her head and was placed too low.
her stylist is going to have a hard time living this down. as well as miuccia prada.
    those shoes are fabulous.
lena. ugh. just NO. whoever told her to focus on her favorite body part should have told her about dressing the rest in a flattering way. and too short for met gala.

    • Ally8 says:

      You’re so right.

      – The slip doesn’t match her skin tone. The effect was presumably meant to be ‘nude’.
      – Instead, the brown color of the slip is gruesome with those greens.
      – The mesh is too wide. It looks like a bedazzled plant holder.
      – Why so many greens? Lime, dark green, the shiny stones, and then a different shade of green + white in the headband.

Dress-up box hideousness. Maybe a green slip and no headband would have made it better? But why attempt to improve it when you could just throw it out?

  56. Sighs says:

If she was going for Native American Gatsby flapper, then she nailed it! Otherwise…. Lena Dunham should just stop wearing clothes, full stop. I’d rather see her naked. And that’s saying a lot, because I really don’t want to see that either.

  57. MrsBPitt says:

I never really got the Lupita is a style goddess…I think she only gets it right about 50% of the time, but thats 50% more than Lena! Lena always looks like a stuffed sausage! She needs to find clothes that fit and that may help some of the problem.

    • margo says:

She has a wonderful gorgeous skin and great body that make almost everything works

  58. capepopsie says:

My computer refused to load down the pics. But has now eventually. I´ve been studying Lupita, and I must say, I love the green emerald colour and the fishnet actually. Imagine the feathers gone, the headpiece gone, and someting nice underneath, and you would have something much nicer. Avant garde, Yes, but all the same. I Think she could pull that off!

  59. MonicaQ says:

Ugh Lena, she has zero idea of her body type. I will now wait for the police to show up and yell at me lol.

  60. MynameisPeaches! says:

I like Lena’s dress and shoes. I think it’s the pose that is off putting. I also like her fringe too. Lupita’s dress is all kinds of a mess. The headband is just awful. The shape and cut of the dress is flattering though and I like her hair and makeup.

  61. Kiddo says:

Oh Lupita, Lupita, Lupita. You need an acting gig, STAT.

  62. faun says:

Lena is even doing that cringe-worthy twee number with a turned-in foot in that last picture. Gah.

Seriously, though, what would be a better look for her body for a formal occasion? I ask because I have the same short stocky body with short legs, too, and I’d be interested to see links to pictures y’all think would look better.

  63. serena says:

Oh my god, maybe this is the first time I ever saw something that fugly!! What stylist? I think a 5 years old put that disaster-outfit together.. and Lupita, I mean, she has a say right? Why the hell would someone wear THAT?

  64. Val says:

Her stylist apparently thought the theme was 1920’s fashion. That’s a mess of an outfit.

  65. Black orchid says:

    Damn Africa ,what happened?

  66. Longhorn says:

This a bad throwback to 70s Disco. Nobody should be dressing like the Village People

  67. Grant says:

Lupita’s outfit wouldn’t have been half bad if she had ditched the ridiculous sweatband.

  68. SK says:

Clearly you haven’t seen Katie Holmes or Kate Upton yet!!

  69. Melymori says:

I’m gonna get a lot of hate for this comment but I’m still waiting for a fashion moment on Lupita’s…. I didn’t looooooved the blue Prada that she wore at the Oscars, it was an Ok dress, not and orgasmic dress at least IMO, and this dress is a worse mess than any halloween party costume of the last 30 years. Awfull.

  70. Emil says:

I don’t know if this was said or not yet, because I didn’t read all the comments, but it this some kind of subtle-not-so-subtle eff you for not getting cast as Tiger Lily in the new Peter Pan movie? I really don’t see Lupita doing something of that nature, but that was the first thing that came to my mind.

  71. Chibichichai says:

I think lupitas dress would have been alright without the feathers. Interesting yes but not a win

  72. hmmm says:

Lupita looks like she just got off the stage of the Ziegfield Follies.

  73. Jeanette says:

    Bug Zapper

  74. Pumpkin Pie says:

The headband Lupita’s wearing reminds me of the Masai tribe, they wear something similar. I can be totally wrong, but that’s the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it. The dress is awful.

  75. aquarius64 says:

    Lupita…..WHY????!! 🙁

    Lena – no surprise.

  76. Maggie says:

I think Lupita is a one hit wonder and this dress is a disaster!

    • Cecilia says:

Oh Maggie…I agree with you. I am really surprised by all the comments that Lupita is a victim here — look what they’ve done to her, as if she has no say or a brain of her own. Come on…the stylist works for her. Who’s the customer??? Lupita should have said, “I AIN’T WEARIN’ THIS SHIT.”

  77. candy corn says:

She looks like a disco Christmas tree. Not a good look.

  78. OKP says:

    Lupita looks like a tree

  79. phlyfiremama says:

I love Lupita’s look. It is a COSTUME GALA for crying out loud. She looks amazing, headband and all, IMO.

  80. RR says:

I actually LOVE Lupita’s dress– it is daring and evocative of Rihanna & Josephine Baker! Bet it was gorgeous in motion. Least boring look of the night. Not crazy about her styling– I would have loved it more with 20s style hair & different jewels. Still, I think it is bold and daring choice for her in a sea of ‘safe’ colors and styles.

  81. LazyMom says:

I saw this and thought, did she get the memo? This might have been the worse offense against the theme this year! Tons of people disregarded the theme and since I’ve only followed the Met Gala fashion from last year, is this the usual?

  82. Pinky Rose says:

This is just tragic and horrible. There is avant garde and there is just plain tacky and ridiculous. This is in the latter camp, you can wear risky, haute couture pieces (like Lauren Santo Domingo, Rachel Ferstein and Karen Elson did las night) and still being elegant and tasteful about it. I really don’t why she choose to wear such try hard dress.
This Gala has been about extremes, from being totally bland and boring to absolutely ridiculous and tasteless (with few exceptions). This event has just transformed into a train wreck, long gone are the exquisite Couture dresses Babe Paley, Dolores Guiness, Milicent Rogers and C.Z Guest wore to the Gala. That was supposed to be the inspiration of the night.

  83. NorthernGirl_20 says:

    WTF?…

  84. Jayna says:

What the? And the headband destroys what little chance the outfit had

  85. shellybean says:

I think Lupita looks great in green, but I don’t get this dress at all. It’s way too costume-y.

As far as Lena goes…I like her a lot, and I appreciate that she has a so-called “normal” body, but this dress is not flattering and makes her look bigger than she actually is. Surely some designer can put her in something that looks fantastic on her?!

  86. margo says:

    mess gala much

  87. Damaris says:

Lupita Nyong’o’s stylists set her up for failure. Her stylists were confused on the theme of the ball. When in doubt, don’t go for a themed look and wear a regular, post-modern evening gown. It’s not that hard! Imagine looking back on this moment and seeing yourself in that dress while others didn’t take the theme as seriously as you did. Embarrassing, I’d say. Whatever she wears to the next red carpet, hopefully, won’t be such a disappointing fashion disaster.

  88. Janet says:

Lupita looks like she’s going to a kid’s dress up party….as a tree

  89. DrFunkenstein says:

Dayyyum, girlfriend looks like she’s the catch o’ the day at Red Lobster. And I know she’s the “It Girl” of the moment, but yawwwwwn.

  90. Penny says:

The worst part is, Lupita’s stylist – Micaela Erlanger – posted a gorgeous picture on Instagram the other day of all the glamorous gowns hanging in her studio for the Met Ball. Breathtaking, dream-worthy gowns that would’ve looked absolutely divine on her. WHY, oh fashion gods…why?!

  91. Francis says:

I really like it, but I like those hippie fringe looks from the 70s, this reminds me of that.
    I like it.

Lena Durham’s figure makes it harder to dress her for the redcarpet.

  92. Kosmos says:

Everything Lupita has worn before this has been extremely chic and minimalist. I can only guess that she wanted to go all out and do something really edgy for the Met event, but even so, this particular get-up is just ugly…..maybe in person, it might be better, I don’t know, but I really don’t even like the colors here. At one Met ball a year or two past, I saw LOTS of edgy outfits, but they were well done and artistic as well as suited to the woman wearing them. I think Lupita will get a lot of flack for this, but she probably doesn’t care.

  93. melain says:

I love it! I think she pulled it off.

  94. Aqua says:

It looks like she’s wearing a dream catcher.

  95. blahblahblha says:

Lupita’s stylist will pretty much be unemployable now…

  96. Maritza says:

On anyone else it would look tacky but on Lupita it suits her quite well considering she is from Kenya but Lena has no excuse for that dreadful dress.
