Emma Stone in bright Thakoon at the 2014 Met Gala: lovely or unflattering?

wenn21320893

This is a post for all of my “Nice try, but maybe next year” dresses at the 2014 Met Gala. It’s not that any of these gowns are either all-good or all-bad. Most of them would only need some minor tweaking or slight redesign to be workable. Emma Stone wore this two-piece Thakoon which… I don’t know. I don’t like it. I could have gotten on board with the idea of it, but the top just looks like a cotton tank (although I’m sure it’s fancier than that). I think she was aiming for minimalist and it came away looking budget. Something nice: It’s cute that Andrew walked the carpet with her, and I do like that she doesn’t have those awful bangs here.

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton. Ugh, really? Michelle is the current face of LV, so I’m sure she was required to wear the label. But LV makes gowns too. I just feel like a boringly sparkly cocktail dress is not getting the job done.

wenn21321949

Riley Keough wore LV as well. She looks like her mother (Lisa Marie) and her grandmother (Priscilla) here.

wenn21320430

Zoe Saldana wore a Michael Kors duvet.

Jessica Paré also wore a duvet by Michael Kors, but she repurposed the duvet into something altogether zzzzz………. I miss January Jones.

I love Emma but this look almost felt too simple to me. She looks really happy though and that’s always been a part of her charm for me, she’s so present and she’s very engaging.

    • mercy says:

I just love Emma’s personality . Her dress is simple, but the colour choice was brave, and it fits her perfectly.

Michelle’s dress is ver cute, but way too plain for the event.

Lol @ “wearing a Michael Kors duvet”…sad, but true. I like Kors and Zoe usually has good style, but it looks exactly like a poofy fitted sheet / duvet!

      • Liv says:

I actually like Emma’s look – she looks gorgeous!

And yes, I love Michelle, but that dress is ridiculous. Make an effort for the Met Gala!

      • ichsi says:

I love Emma’s skirt. It’s almost budget but then the tail falls too beautifully and it fits her figure too perfectly. Wonderful. It’s also 100 times better than anything she wore for the Spiderman promos.

  2. Wannabeparisian says:

Emma stone should NOT be mixed in with the rest of these fugly outfits. She looks fresh and cool! I’m in my twenties and this is what a fashionista who ain’t interested in being sexy wants to wear.

    • kimber says:

It’s cute, but not on her. Trends arent cute on everyone and the colors of this one are a little too :genie in a bottle” meets pepto bismo. Someone with darker features would be better suit for the color scheme.

Emma would be better keeping it classic like she usually does.

  3. Melissa says:

I think Emma looked great, one of the best dressed of the night imho.

    • Jessica says:

This is my favorite look of the night. And I love her and Andrew together. They’re such a cute and non-obnoxious couple.

  4. TheOriginalKitten says:

Oh Michelle, I expected more from you.
She has a tendency to rely of Mod styling and sometimes it just doesn’t work, like here-this dress makes her look so boxy.

All of this is pretty bad. Emma might not be as terrible if she didn’t have that awful orange eye shadow and don’t even get me started on Gag-field. I do like Emma in pink though-it really brightens up her face.

Pare is probably the best, which isn’t saying much.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Kitten, totally agree about Michelle. The dress made her look so short-waisted. A real disappointment.

    • Kiddo says:

I agree with everything. That bronze make-up on Emma clashes with the hot pink. She’s beginning to really resemble Lohan, and her make-up choices in particular.

    • blue marie says:

Agree with all of it OKitt..

    • reddy says:

Michelle Williams, just like Kate Bosworth, always looks SO boring. I don’t know why people always assume they are so fashionable, when they always look the exact same, bland way.

    • poppy says:

      BOXY.

    • poppy says:

michael kors is a terrible designer. he tried to go with the charles james theme but zac posen did so much better.
kors has no technique and everything he “creates” looks like a bad version of something good.

oops, not supposed to be posted as a reply.

    • Kosmos says:

About Michelle Williams, yes, too bad, just NOT a good look on her. She could have done so much better!! Emma Stone’s hair is simply fantastic. She looks REALLY good, although the combo is a little understated for this function, right? Love her colors, though, and otherwise she looks fab. While Andrew looks great with more hair, his usual head of great hair, this shaved-down look just isn’t doing him any favors, ugg. I really dislike Zoe’s billowy layers altogether.

  5. Nighty says:

Oh for goodness sake… Going to work… it’s more interesting… These are posts on how not to dress…. 🙂

  6. Karen says:

I actually really like Emma’s look, one of my favourites of the night. The rest are blah, though I don’t mind Jessica’s.

    Also, where is January Jones?!

  7. ds says:

Zaldanas dress is horrible. The worst. It’s even worse than Beyonces. I love Stone, she’s so pretty and loved the look.

  8. magpie says:

I hate Megan in MM, but Jessica Paré looks good here. Like the dress even though I usually hate bold print.

Love Emma Stone. So simple and she looks so fresh. Not on theme, but I like it.

So many HORRID dresses this year I’m giving points to people who look OK.

  9. Dani says:

I actually LOVE Emma’s whole outfit. Dress, hair, makeup and accessories. I think maybe shoes she could have done something a bit bolder. I love the colors of the dress, very young and fresh but…not sorry for being a worry-troll…she’s looking emaciated lately.

  10. Janet says:

Zoe Saldana has the worst fashion sense of any woman I’ve ever seen.

  11. Tatjana says:

As always, Emma looks amazing. Especially her hair and makeup. She is so beautiful.

  12. Jegede says:

Another fashionista actress that does not get there is a theme.
At least Zoe appears to take inspiration from the Charles’ James aera

    • mia girl says:

Yes, it’s disappointing because Emma does so much right with this look, but got it all wrong for the event.

And I’m not sure why, but as impeccably as this looks on her, my first impression was kind of sad. Maybe it’s the make-up. She’s missing something in her expression, or the make up is overwhelming her. Not sure.

  13. Renee28 says:

I actually like Emma’s look. It’s simple yet sexy.

  14. paola says:

    ahahah!!
DYING over the ‘Zoe Saldana wore a Michael Kors duvet’ comment.

You can’t say that! She has style! It’s so painful being her with so much style and class!

Quote: ‘“The trend of trying to dress like everybody else is the tackiest and most dishonest thing you can do to yourself. You suffer so much because you don’t ever really find your own true voice.”

  15. Sayrah says:

I really like the colors of Emma’s dress. I think they would look great on her in a different style though.

  16. eliza says:

Why does Williams always stand like a 5yr old getting her picture taken? This “I’m so shy and fragile” shtick is getting super old.

  17. smee says:

Emma’s outfit is nice, but you’re right, it’s just too casual looking. She looks fab in it tho.

Michelle Williams really needs to get past the baby-doll shaped dresses. It worked very well for a while, but she needs something….less girly and more tailored.

  18. Mia4S says:

Emma: cute outfit, wrong event! That dress is for a summer movie premiere, not the MetGala. It just ends up looking lazy. Too bad.

Zoe and Jessica’s dresses suit the theme…and that’s the best I can say.

  19. AG-UK says:

LV was best when it was Marc Jacobs.

  20. Maggi says:

Love Emma’s dress but her hair and makeup look off. Maybe I’m too used to her having some sort of fringe and wearing a bright lipstick…..her face looks odd here.

  21. LadyRay says:

Yea Emma’s outfit is missing something. Definitely wrong occasion. And I hate the eyeshadow

  22. It'sJustBlanche says:

I never think Michelle Williams looks good is dressier things–she looks best in casual clothing, kind of like Miranda Lambert.

Didn’t Zoe Saldana have a much larger chest in the past? It seems like she used to be very busty.

  23. QQ says:

I liked Emma’s A Lot! The rest are zzzzzz

  24. mia girl says:

Michelle Williams – You are a grown woman, stop wearing dresses from Matilda’s closet and posing like an awkward 11 year old girl. Enough.

  25. Grant says:

Love Emma’s look. I think the varying shades of pink look great on her and I love her hair. One of my best dressed of the night, actually.

  26. Jayna says:

I adore Emma’s look, and the color on her suits her. She’s not a fussy person and she looks great, like not playing pretend in dress-up like some of these celebs do sometimes in their gowns. I love the cut on her, how unique it is in its simplicity. Good job

  27. Nicolette says:

I like Emma’s dress, but not for this event.

  28. Liberty says:

“Hello. Wrong party. Your event is next door at the Marriott.”

  29. dana says:

Emma Stone’s tank top and sarong skirt remind me of the scuba gear Calvin Klein was trotting out in 2011.

  30. serena says:

I like Emma Stone’s dress.. nice try, as you said, but it looks cheap and above all her make up is completely wrong! How can such a pretty girl always be looking bad on official occasions? Such a shame.

Michelle Williams always manages to look like a 50 years old woman.. enough with the white-blonde, get some darker highlights or something! And stop with the cocktail dress.. it really does seems like a try-hard. Still, I like her, lol.

  31. poppy says:

the pink on her is fabulous. her makeup clashes terribly tho.
michelle’s dress is too short for this and makes her look so terribly boxy.

  32. claire says:

Emma looks amazing; it’s probably one of my favorites of the night. My only criticism would be that it might be a bit more red-carpet than Met gala.

  33. shellybean says:

Emma and Andrew look fantastic! Emma’s look is probably my favorite of the night. She looks so good in these colors, and very young and fresh, and she has the body for this. I love it. Also love Andrew’s suit.

    Michelle Williams = snooze

Jessica Pare looks good, this is a huge improvement over her normal red-carpet looks.

  34. Aysla says:

I think everything about Emma Stone’s look is bright, youthful, fun, and lovely. Especially love the hair and makeup. One of my favorite looks.

  35. Just Lurking says:

Nothing looks like Priscilla, at least nothing from this planet.

  36. Samtha says:

I love Emma’s hair. That styling is so cute, and it looks really fresh and fun.

  37. Pinky Rose says:

Emma looks stunning but the dress is totally wrong for the event and reminds me of a Lanvin dress she wore to the BAFTAS in 2011.

  38. salma says:

    Gorgeous

  39. Jessica says:

I think Emma looks great. It’s not my favorite thing she’s worn, but it’s nice, and do much better than most of those dresses last night. Way better than anything else in this post.

I love that Andrew walked the carpet with her. They make a nice couple; I like them together.

  40. gritsngreens says:

Well, Lord. All these awful messes that most likely took hours…natch…DAYS to get ready.
Making me feel better about not finding a good outfit to go to work in…..

I did actually like the Olson twins outfits just because I’m so tired of the boobs/ribcages/legs/vags being thrown in my face all the time. I found them somewhat classy and refreshing.

  41. lucy2 says:

Emma looks good, but I don’t like the top so much.
Michelle’s would be cute for a lesser event, I think.
