Drew Barrymore: ‘I would really like to raise kids to do summer jobs & intern’

June 2014 Cover

Drew Barrymore has a new movie coming out with Adam Sandler, which… I mean, the movie (Blended) doesn’t look good or anything, but I think it’s kind of cool that Adam and Drew are still tight, that they enjoy working together and I enjoy the fact that they both seem like real people. I mean, every woman has had a Drew in their life. Some hippie, flowery girl who loves love and has her heart in the right place. And most people have an Adam Sandler in their lives too: the dude’s dude with all the friends, the guy that just seems down-to-earth. Anyway, to promote the movie, Drew covers the new issue of Redbook. For the past few years, I’ve been skipping Drew’s interviews, but I liked this one. Some highlights:

Drew Barrymore on being surprised that her husband chose her instead of a long, tall Upper East Side lady:
“I would love to have long, thin arms, I really would but I don¹t. I can run a company, so maybe I am just going to have fatter arms and run a company wearing sleeves? That is my balance; nobody gets to have it all. I would take wearing sleeves and running a company. Not that running a company is the key to happiness, but while I may not be tall and thin, I am capable. Will [being with me], it does surprise me and it doesn¹t surprise me. However, knowing his personality and what he finds humorous and attractive and appealing, I¹m like, ‘Okay, got it!'”

On raising her daughters to understand responsibility:
“I would really like to raise kids to do summer jobs and intern, and understand that if you are supposed to be somewhere at 3 o¹clock, you need to be there at 3 o¹clock.”

On making time for her girlfriends:
“I fight to carve out the time. My friends are such a priority because they were what I had for most of my life. We are really close. I wish we could play more often, but everyone is so busy it¹s insane. But to go over to each other’s houses on a Sunday to check-in, just get on the phone and talk: ‘How are you? Do you need anything?’ Really trying to be there is important. If I was ever in a bind, no one on the planet would have my back more than my friends.”

Drew on Adam Sandler, her co-star in Blended (in theaters May 2014):
“Some comedians are really dark in person, and that¹s heartbreaking. Adam is a genuinely nice, positive person. He doesn¹t have a mean-spiritedness to his comedy or to his nature. We both really care about goodness.”

[From Redbook]

Drew’s husband, Will, is really rich (family money), and Drew is quite wealthy in her own right (although she’s more self-made than Will). Do you think Drew’s kids will really work summer jobs and internships and know the value of a dollar? I have to think that there’s a happy medium for rich parents to teach their kids about money, something in between “utterly spoiled” and “Warren Buffett not giving his children anything but an education.”

I really like what Drew says about “nobody gets to have it all.” It’s true. Everybody has something they don’t like about themselves, every person covets some trait that they see in someone else. I too would love naturally thin arms. And thinner thighs.

    The last picture is stunning.

  2. Rhiley says:

I think Drew has been really smart in the friends she has chosen over the years, and I think all of her friendships, at least within the moment, have been genuine. In the 80s she was close with the two Coreys; the 90s she was besties with Courtney Love and dated the singer of Hole and Billy Joe Armstrong. Then she married Tom Green and we learned that Drew is more of a goof ball than a flake. And now, she is really close with Cameron Diaz and Jimmy Fallon. I kind of wonder, though, why she has never been close with Winona Ryder, at least 15 or so years ago. They were both close with Britney Murphy, had unstable childhoods, seem to have similar tastes in men, and have worked with Adam Sandler. Maybe Winona is just a bit too dark for Drew.

If she was besties with CLove, I don’t see Winona or anyone else anyone being “too dark” for her friendship lol. It seems like Drew went through some dark times in her own life, but weathered it pretty well, all things considered. She was probably lucky the internet wasn’t around during those dark years. Maybe she has found some friends who aren’t famous.

Dated the singer of Hole? Courtney Love was the singer of Hole. ….. ?

      • Boxy Lady says:

Rhiley meant lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. And Drew is the godmother of Frances Cobain.

I love Drew…after pulling herself up from her crazy childhood and teens, finding success again, and always seeming to have such a positive attitude! I see so many woman drop their girlfriends, after marriage and having babies, I’m glad to see, she knows the importance of keeping close friends in your life.

Funny thing…Had the tv on the other day (not even watching it) and Charlies Angels came on and I saw Tom Green, and I thought, I forgot Drew and Tom had been married for brief moment!

  4. Kiddo says:

I like Drew. Her life has played out in the public since she was a little kid and it was fraught with a lot of strangeness. She comes across as ‘stoned chick’ sometimes, but her commentary on TCM is actually quite thoughtful and mature.

  5. lucy2 says:

    Pretty photos.
She seems genuinely happy and grounded. Given her past, that’s an amazing feat, and I’m happy for her.

  6. Shhhimsupposedtobeworking says:

Is she actually saying that in her world one’s parents cannot instill the simple concept of responsibility? It takes an internship to understand how to be somewhere on time? These poor rich babies.

    • mercy says:

And she’s worried about her arms? I guess that’s supposed to make her relatable or something. I like her, but her interviews tend to be much ado about nothing.

    • S says:

I feel like when you’re a young teenager and get your first job or internship IS often when people get their first light bulb moment about the importance of being on time and being responsible for themselves. A first job or internship is when a kid is finally responsible for checking their own schedule and keeping track of it, showing up on time and doing what is required of them without their parents looking over their shoulder- “Did you do your homework? Did you pack all of your things for practice today? Don’t forget _fill in the blank__”.

I realize not everyone’s parents were like this, but I grew up in an area where most moms were stay at home moms and were able to manage their kids activities from the time they got up to the time they went to bed. I understand where she’s coming from.

    • holly hobby says:

Honestly, parents can teach only so much and some kids respond better when they work with outsiders. I understand what she is implying. You can only lecture so much. As soon as the child enters the workforce, via internship or a job at McDonald’s, they will learn personal responsibility and not to piss off management.

  7. kimber says:

    She looks and sounds happy

  8. poppy says:

most rich people totally encourage their progeny to work and be successful.
i doubt their kids have the real world struggle of finding the kind of internships warren buffet’s kids will have their choice of. some won’t have the luxury of being able to intern. the breaks these kids get compared to everyone else is unbelievable. just because of who their parents are.
but, good for her to encourage responsibility. nobody did that for her really.

  9. magpie says:

After seeing the Smith and Jenner kids whose parents encourage them to do nothing except be famous, this is refreshing. I don’t think Drew will want her children to be child stars and give up their childhood like she did. Good for Drew.

    • ol cranky says:

bbbbbut, if you ask the Kardashian/Jenner’s they are and have always been very hard working kids. they think being them is working

  10. MissTrial says:

Can’t pinpoint it but she annoys me now.

  11. Stormsmama says:

I love her and am so happy for her. I love that she has found/created a healthy and nurturing family <3

  12. holly hobby says:

She didn’t have the most normal childhoods and she had a dark period but I’m glad she turned her life around and want to give her kids what she didn’t have – an actual childhood.

  13. Emily C. says:

I do not have an Adam Sandler in my life, as I avoid misogynistic douchebags.

  14. KC says:

“Drew is quite wealthy in her own right (although she’s more self-made than Will)”

LOL, I like Drew quite a bit, but I do not think this is so. Drew’s family has been famous since the 1800s.

I’m sure Mr. Kopelman’s family has been wealthy for a while, but I doubt that long. We all would have inevitably heard of that surname before he married her.
