Zoe Saldana attended the Grace of Monaco premiere in Cannes with a surprising dress. On anyone else, the effect of Zoe’s look isn’t that shocking, but I’m so used to her trying to be avant garde and edgy. This is a more classic look with a twist. I was also surprised to learn that this is a Victoria Beckham gown. The pleats on the skirt are crisp and elegant, and the asymmetrical ruffles on the bodice remind me of cake icing. I am a big icing girl, so this dress automatically wins me over. Zoe wore gold Louboutin sandals to match her gold “rope” belt. The earrings are a bit large but go with the gold theme. Zoe wisely let her hair fall in lose waves. She remembered to smile too. Zoe has one of those faces that transform with a smile, which is her best asset.
Zhang Ziyi is always interesting and rarely predictable. She chose a Stephane Rolland couture dress with all sorts of edgy details. The top has a shattered-glass effect, and the gown melts into a cascade of white ruffles. She looks so pretty.
Kendall Jenner wore Chanel and made it look super budget. I know, it’s a Kardashian on the red carpet at Cannes. It’s fine — Paris Hilton has been to Cannes many times. BTW, Kendall is rumored to be the new face of Topshop.
Karlie Kloss fugged the whole premiere up with this tri-color lace Valentino gown. This dress is so ugly, and Karlie disappears into a sea of awfulness. She looks like an attendee at ye olde renaissance fair.
Audrey Tautou wore a pretty enough black and white dress in a geometric print with offbeat navy pumps. How amazing would this dress have been as a cute strapless number?
Jane Fonda looked fantastic in Elie Saab. She’s sexy without trying too hard and age-appropriate but still sizzling.
Sofia Coppola wore Valentino as part of the judging panel. This outfit is so frumpy and reminds me of a 1990s sweater and culottes combo. With sparkles.

Yeah, there’s just nothing special about Kendall. She’s tall and thin, but you need more than that to make it. I don’t think she’s even that pretty. She looks like a normal 18 year old girl, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Girl, go to college and do something of worth.

Dead on comparison for Sofia. Looks exactly like an outfit I wore most of 1995, an oversized sweater and baggy Chino style pleated gap shortS. Except sparkly. Like Felicity is going to the ball. Oh my.
I never would have pegged it for a Victoria Beckham dress! It’s breezy, light and soft, not structured and controlled and “cold” like her usual aesthetic. I love it. And that waist us insane!
Jane looks fabulous too. “Marilyn” popped in my head when I saw that silhouette and dress, before I saw whose face it was. Good I hope I age half s well!

I have a dress pretty much a carbon copy of Zoe’s, except the tank top part is opaque enough to properly cover my nipple. Cost $80 from a chain store, two years ago. This is why I will never understand why VB is a respected designer, I’ve never seen anything from her that hasn’t already filtered down to chain stores months before she launches her collections.
Zhang Ziyi’s dress could do without the ruffle but at least she’s always interesting. I don’t know why more women don’t go all out with proper gowns at Cannes. You can wear a mediocre cocktail dress anytime, why not take the opportunity to wear something special?

I like Jane Fonda’s – it’s very similar to Angelina Jolie’s Oscar dress but I think I like the red better. ERW’s green is still my favorite by far from that line though.

Omg. That Valentino dress is beyond ugly. By the way, that is not “ye olde renaissance fair” attire. That is a shitty “fin de siécle boudoir morning gown” gone horribly wrong. Good god, I can’t get over the supreme ugliness of this… this… how is this Valentino? It most certainly cost a fortune. Why? Why?

I’m surprised that Zoe’s dress is a VB gown because it looks like someone over a US size 2 could wear it. Obviously, let’s not go nuts here, it would probably stop being flattering about a size 8. But that skirt on the dress is just absolutely stunning and the detailing on the top half is really pretty and stops just on the right side of dramatic before it hits crazy town.
Obviously anything on Zhang Ziyi is going to look good because she’s gorgeous. I just wish that amazing top half to that dress had carried down to some amazing form fitting lower half or even a black flowy skirt without the ruffle on the side. It’s like it’s two amazing but completely different looks that just happened to be stitched together at the waist.
Victoria’s dresses have been moore loose fitting for a while I think. I think she got her size 2 reputation from her first collections and now her dresses are as suited for other body types other fashion houses dresses are.
I also wish all of Zhang’s dress would be like the top half but regardless she looks incredible. The color contrast is cool.

It’s strange and disconcerting and flattering and interesting at the same time. The rest are somewhat regrettable. Jane Fonda has a fabulous figure, yet I don’t love the entire look; the color or the make-up or something seems harsh. But, you know what? I will never look that good at her age, so screw me for saying anything.

Is Zhang known for anything other than being a fashion icon and tabloid fixture in China? I haven’t seen her in anything noteworthy in a very long time. Maybe she is in critically acclaimed Chinese movies I have not seen yet. I find Gong Li to be much more beautiful and talented than Zhang.
She’s one of the biggest stars in China (although at this point she’s much less bankable than, for instance, Fan Bingbing – who’s starring in the next X-Men movie). She just won a Best Actress award for her role in the Grandmaster.
I can’t believe Zhang & Zoe are the same age…Zhang looks so young! ZZ also works the avant garde elegant fashionista/ action badass star more chicly than Zoe…and more believably. Overall both women look very nice.

I’ve always thought Angelina’s red carpet dresses were more suited to Jane Fonda. Now, here we have Jane in a dress worn by Angelina at this year’s Oscars.
