Lana del Rey’s secondary market ticket prices are 2nd only to Beyonce

Lana del Rey

Lana del Rey’s toned down her media presentation lately. She’s preparing to release Ultraviolence this year, so she may be back. Otherwise, she’s been coming down off her “Young and Beautiful” high. This time last year, she was in Cannes for The Great Gatsby. Now she’s preparing to perform at Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding for a six-figure sum. Kim loves “Young and Beautiful,” and Lana “couldn’t say no” to Kanye’s request. I do hope Lana tweaks the lyrics to read, “Young, Kat-Faced, and Beautiful.” Is that mean? I think the change would add a nice, personalized touch to the wedding.

Lana’s also making headlines for her outrageous ticket prices. These actually aren’t “her” prices. These are the sums that people will pay on the second market at places like StubHub. I’m not suggesting that anyone buy tickets from StubHub. I don’t know if that site is safe, but I checked prices for Katy Perry’s tour (the daughter begged) and found they were wayyy too pricey. No way. I wouldn’t ever buy Lana’s even more expensive tickets, but other people are doing it. This article is long, so I cut out a lot of the financial data about other artists like Katy and Gaga:

Pop music’s new power ranking are in and, at least as far as ticket prices are concerned, Lana Del Rey is making a serious charge to the top. According to TiqIQ, the average price for Lana Del Rey tickets on the secondary market are $269.68 for her current tour, making Lana Del Rey the second most expensive female performer in music at the moment — trailing only Beyonce, who is arguably the biggest female star in music today.

However, the current comparison to Beyonce may not be entirely fair, as Beyonce will be co-headlining her upcoming “On the Run” tour with husband Jay-Z, making Jay-Z and Beyonce tickets the most expensive of the current crop of female performers at an average price of $306.22. Perhaps a more accurate comparison would be Beyonce’s “Mrs. Carter Show” solo world tour from last year, when Beyonce tickets were priced at $294.01 on average. This would still keep Lana Del Rey in second position, but there is no denying that she is gaining fast.

In fact, it might be surprising to learn that Lana Del Rey tickets are now priced higher than those of more established female pop powerhouses including Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Miley Cyrus. Part of this can be attributed to the relatively rare number of live shows that Lana Del Rey has booked, compared with the long-running massive global tours of her pop diva contemporaries. Lana Del Rey has just eight North American dates remaining on her current tour, followed by five European festival gigs.

The biggest difference between Lana Del Rey and the other artists above is the size of the venue for these concerts. While the big names in pop are touring massive arenas, Lana Del Rey is performing in smaller venues with a smaller quantity of available tickets. The limited availability of tickets is a reason for the increased price of tickets, but compared to artists playing similar venues the demand for Lana Del Rey tickets is clear.

[From Forbes]

This is a smart move on Lana’s part. She plays smaller venues, perhaps out of necessity or perhaps on purpose. She’s created a higher demand for her live performances, which will help convince promoters that she can fill larger venues next time. Lana’s not getting any extra money from secondary market sales, but she’ll gain a lot of benefit from this image manipulation. Isn’t that what pop music is all about?

You know what Courtney Love said about him, right? “More like three inch nails.”

      • Kiddo says:

Ha. I kinda love and hate Courtney at the same time. Anyway, you asked for miserable day.

      • mimif says:

I can’t even get that song in my head right now because all I can hear is BUZZZ but I will not forget this, Kiddzilla Love.

I’ve used StubHub to buy hockey tickets and they were super cheap but I’ve never tried purchasing concert tickets with them. I think you would get the best price the day of the event.

    • Colu says:

I bought a music festival ticket on StubHub a few weeks before the event and paid less than my best friend did from the official supplier.

      • SophiaJames says:

Ah ok, I stand corrected. The hockey tickets I got for cheap a few hours before the game so I just assumed.

  3. Lillipop says:

I love her music, but I wouldn’t go see her live.

  4. Leen says:

I know she isn’t people’s cup of tea, but I really love her. I saw her twice this year (at Coachella and SweetLife) and she was amazing. She might not be the best live performer, but I really do like her albums, and she is a sweetheart on stage. She takes the time to meet her fans and whatnot.

  5. Hannah says:

I don’t think she’ll perform at the K wedding. Just gossip.

  6. Shiksa Goddess says:

Wait she’s singing at the Kimye wedding?! Ugh only makes sense that Kim loves “Young and Beautiful”. Anyhow, I payed $70 for my On the Run tickets and I’m sure I’ll be happy with my nosebleed experience. I can’t see paying $300 for better seats. For ANYONE.

  7. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Only because people will listen to anything is she a thing- her awful laughable performance on SNL several years ago should’ve killed her – she gives manufactured a bad name. To excuse her live performances is nonsense; she’s what 27. Hell, all the bands at Woodstock were her age or younger and they pulled it off, and without today’s electronic enhancements. If you can’t perform live without autotune and backing tracks you have no talent. SHe’s strictly a corporate creation. Esperanza Spalding and Gabriela of Rodrigo and Gabriela have more talent in their eyelashes than this chick, and they are mostly ignored.

    • Hannah says:

All you need to do is a quick YouTube search to see that she can sing live. She had a bad day on SNL. Big deal.

      • Katija says:

        Huh?!

All of her live performances are bad. Do you have a link to a good one? I’m not trying to be argumentative. I’m serious here.

    • Chinoiserie says:

Just because someone sings badly once live does not mean that person is necessarily a bad singer. Idina Menzel did not sing that well at the Oscars but she is a great singer.

    • Grant says:

I disagree when you argue that an artist who can’t sing live without auto-tune has NO talent. There are plenty of acts who may not have a great singing voice but make up for it with energetic performance and dancing skills (Janet Jackson, Madonna, Britney circa 2002, Michael Jackson to a certain extent, Cheryl Cole, Ciara, Fist Brown, etc.) to the point where seeing them live is still enjoyable and entertaining. I think saying they have no talent is kind of hyperbolic.

      • Tiffany :) says:

But LDR doesn’t dance. She just stands there and she still can’t sing well. The other performers you listed had elaborate sets and dance routines.

      • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

All right No talent was hyperbolic, here’s the thing how many of today’s so called “stars” could perform live as the great bands did, often in thunderous stadium settings (I saw a few), with the equipment of that era – performing as they say without a net – in other words, no splash and dash, no live autotune, which is used quite a bit, no backing tracks or pre-recorded music, Everything live and spontaneous. THat’s why so many people listen to and revere the great rock and soul bands from that era (That era is all over youtube) – no floor monitors scrolling lyrics, if they missed a lyric, they just improvised. Elizabeth Grant aka Lana Del Rey would be lost, she really is just a glorified karaoke singer. Why would I pay good money to see that when I can see just as good if not better at my local high school?

      • Tatjana says:

Does she write her music? I like her songs.
I can excuse bad singing if musicians write their music.

“There are plenty of acts who may not have a great singing voice but make up for it with energetic performance and dancing skills (Janet Jackson, Madonna, Britney circa 2002, Michael Jackson to a certain extent, Cheryl Cole, Ciara, Fist Brown, etc.)”
With this I don’t agree. If you can’t sing and you don’t write your songs, you’re not a musician. Go be a dancer.

Personally, I love acts that just come up and sing on stage, no dancing, no costumes, no fireworks or what not.

    • Racer says:

I became a fan AFTER seeing her on SNL. Prior to I had no idea who she was.

    • Isadora says:

I have huge respect for people who simply kill it live (like Adele) and I have to agree that some of Lana’s live performances were cringeworthy in the past, but that doesn’t mean she’s not an artist. She’s just more of a studio artist. I really love some of her songs, very beautiful and atmospheric. She has an interesting voice and projects a certain image with her videos and cover art (which you can love or hate) and all in all I like what she’s doing, fake lips and hipster shtick notwithstanding. I won’t see her live because of aforementioned reasons, but I mean I’m not forced to. Live performances are just one part of a singer’s occupation and not the most important one imho. The most important thing to me is that I don’t want to turn the radio off when they are playing a certain song.

I might also like her better than some of her contemporaries because she was very nice and down to earth (surprisingly so) in the few interviews I’ve seen with her. And while she does the sexy thing (who doesn’t?) she does it without being Miley Cyrus, thankfully.

  8. Tiffany says:

No one ever said hipster/pretentiousness was cheap.

    • Scotchy says:

Ok my two cents are the girl has a mediocre voice but she works with brilliant songwriters and producers. She is a complete product of branding and pr. Nothing about her is actually artistic, edgy or authentic. It’/ basically hip easy listening. I am a touring artist and I can honestly say live shows are actually extremely important to an artists career. Especially in todays download culture, where most people don’t pay for music. The music industry is really dismal, and the fact that we as a cultural so readily embrace mediocre autotuned cleverally packaged sounds is sad. very sad and it means you will have to hunt deeper and deeper for truly insipiring stuff because at the top there are very few great artists today. So sad.

  9. Hissyfit says:

No kidding. I wanted to go to her concert but tix were sold out on ticketmaster and the venue so I went to stubhub and was shocked with the prices. From ticketmaster it was around $45 – $60 but on stubhub it was between $1000 – $2000. Like, are you shitttting me? No thanks.

  10. manda says:

there is something about her that I just can’t stand

    • THeOriginalKitten says:

      Is it the completely-manufactured image?

      The scary collagen lips?

The fact that her millionaire daddy essentially bought her record contract even though she tries to make it seem like she was living in a van down by the river and struggling in clubs before she got her Big Break?

The fact that she sounds like she’s on ‘ludes every time she sings?

The oversharing about her Pepsi-flavored biscuits?

I’m just trying to help out here…..

  11. Franny Days says:

I saw her at the Ryman in Nashville and had an amazing time. The tickets were INSANELY expensive and luckily I didn’t have to pay for mine or I probably wouldn’t have gone.

  12. Christo says:

I’ll admit that I side-eyed Lana in her initial roll-out, but, after a few albums, and, more importantly, within her great interviews, I have grown to really appreciate her. I like the fact that she prefers to stay out of the limelight instead of constantly feeding the masses with her “connectedness” through social media like so many of her contemporaries. That being said, only a major payout of some sort would compel me to sing at Kimye’s wedding, and, even then, I would seriously question that choice.

  13. Tiffany :) says:

I think her schtick is ok…but I find her completely boring because she does the same thing all the time. For example, her version of “Once Upon A Dream” is EXACTLY how you’d imagine it would sound as sung by LDR: slow and melancholy. There are some people who can do the same thing over and over and it works because they are brilliant at it. LDR is not brilliant at her thing, just ok.

  14. MSat says:

Too bad she can’t sing live.

  15. Katija says:

The girl is ridiculously talentless, but her producers and songwriters are phenomenal.
