Cressida Bonas signs on to her first film role: was this her career goal after all?

Here are some new photos of Cressida Bonas out in London yesterday. She loves her jeggings. One of the most bizarre stories to come out of Cressida and Prince Harry’s split last month was this Daily Mail story. “Sources” made Cressida sound like a narcissist and drama queen, which is funny because the aim was to make her sound sympathetic and like royal marriage material. Apparently, Cressy wanted Harry to acknowledge and understand that she was “sacrificing a lot” to be with him and that she “turned down a lot of opportunities professionally.” Well, now we’re getting a better idea of what those professional opportunities were. She wants to be an actress. That’s why she got so upset with Harry wanting to turn her into a princess – she doesn’t want to be part of some “Firm.” She wants all eyes on her. She performed in a play at the Hay Festival last week, and now she’s signed on to her first film role:

Goodbye royals, hello Hollywood! Cressida Bonas has landed her first big screen role two months after splitting from Prince Harry, the Evening Standard reports. The socialite will star in Harvey Weinstein’s Tulip Fever alongside Victoria’s Secret model Cara Delevingne and Daisy Lowe.

“It’s so clever,” an insider told the UK newspaper. “They’ve cast actual models like Cara and Daisy [Lowe] to play the artists’ models and for the part of the society lady they’ve cast Prince Harry’s ex.”

Bonas, 25, will also be joined by Glee’s Matthew Morrison, Judi Dench, Zach Galifianakis, and Christoph Waltz for the project, which is the film adaptation of Deborah Moggach’s 1999 bestselling novel.

This is a big step for Bonas, who previously kept a low profile following her split from the royal Brit, 29, last April. “Cressida will focus on work for a while,” a source told Us at the time. “She has no plans to start dating people.”

Just as well. If this is the path she wants to carve out for herself, so be it. Cressida Bonas, Movie Star. Sounds better than Princess Cressida. Meanwhile, Katie Nicholl at Vanity Fair says that Harry is totally moving on too:

There were excited whispers last weekend about Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas getting back together, but Royal Watch is sad to report that the two-year on-again-off-again romance between the handsome royal and Cressy really is over. According to friends who have been hanging out with Harry, there will be no reconciliation—and he is back on the singles’ market.

“He pretty much said he’s out to have fun now that he’s single. He wants to meet a girl and he is definitely a bachelor,” a source close to the 29-year-old tells me. The prince spent Saturday at the Audi Polo Challenge, where he reportedly partied late into the night. “He came with ten friends as well as William. Usually Harry leaves after lunch, but this year he stayed and danced the night away. William went home to see Catherine and George,” says one party-goer.

As Royal Watch revealed, Harry reportedly tried his hardest to woo Cressida back. He cooked a romantic supper for her at Kensington Palace, but despite his culinary efforts, Cressida has told him she simply can’t live up to being a princess.

“He was hopeful of getting back together, but it’s not going to happen,” says a source close to Harry. “He was sad, but he’s dusted himself off and is now moving on. He’s on the lookout for a new girlfriend already.”

One possible suitor could well be Amanda Shepherd, singer Bryan Ferry’s ex-wife. The pair are old friends and got along famously at Guy Pelly’s recent wedding in Memphis, where they were described as being “very flirty.”

Harry with a divorcee? *clutches pearls* It’s not that I think Harry has flat-out awful taste in women, it’s just that he needs to branch out a little bit, extend his dating pool. The aristocratic girls will have too many issues with joining the royal family. And the celebrity girls are too indiscreet. I would love it if Harry ended up marrying a Canadian or an Aussie girl.

PS… Cressida looks like Diane Kruger in these pics?

This is an interesting turn! I like it.

  2. HH says:

I was never a fan, but she’s moving on quite nicely. I’m loving that blazer, but not with that outfit.

  3. QQ says:

Oh yeah a Normally Dress Diane Kruger! Yes I see it

    • Lollipop says:

      Diane Kruger is much prettier.
And those are not jeggins, are they?

Her two sisters who are actresses, how are they doing? Is there any actual talent in that family?

      • Bridget says:

Not really. One sister’s claim to fame was that she was in the Endless Love remake (remember that?) the other never actually got her career off the ground and became a society wife.

    • HH says:

All I can think of is the quote from one of the breakup articles in which it stated (paraphrasing) she has a fierce collection of trainers and didn’t want to trade them in for heels. She does seem to like her sneakers! But I’m not one to criticize in that dept. Heels only come out for special occasions for me.

  4. Ali J says:

I would rather bbe a princess and lawyer.

  5. janice says:

This path she’s chosen is probably for the best and it’s good that she’s recognized that royal life and all the bs that goes along with it isn’t for her.

  6. SoCal says:

It might have been her career goal after all and dating Prince Harry gave her more exposure and made her very interesting. Do your thing, Cressy.

I agree that Prince Harry has to extend his dating pool, perhaps he will find a Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish lady. I hope he looks at his brother as an example and thinks with the right head lol.

  7. Feebee says:

Well played Miss Bonas. If she gets a few roles/experience under her belt I could see something like being a Bond girl in her future (not the Vesper model, the other type).

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wow, acting with Judy Dench in her first film. This is interesting.

  9. Asra says:

Haha an Aussie girl!, yea mate, let’s have a back yard barbie wedding!
    That would be interesting!

So this has been her agenda…….Harrys better off without her tbh… pity he’s surrounded by celebs/aristos/hangers on – would be nice if he met a nice ordinary girl who would love him for who he is as a person….but nice ordinary girls wont come into his orbit which is a shame – that would’ve been a new experience for the monarchy.

  11. Lala says:

No surprise, really. Seems like she got the role because her friends brought her on; Cara Delevingne and Daisy Lowe are both in her circle of friends. Can she sustain an acting career without her friends bringing her onto their projects? That is the question.

  12. Talie says:

I think her family definitely wanted her to marry in, but clearly she went the other way. Her choice.

I agree that he won’t be finding a wife in that shallow pool of women — he’s going to have find someone socially ambitious.

  13. whipmyhair says:

Wait, William left the party early to see Kate and George? Did he hit his head and change his personality?

  14. Dame Snarkweek says:

    Acting = Limelight, right??
Okay, so aside from that snark I actually think Cressy is moving in the right direction. If creativity is her calling then being a royal robot is a horrible life. I hope she finds fulfillment and happiness. I also hope she continues to mature. Either way, bravo for landing the gig.

  15. Bohemia says:

Oh, no, I hope this doesn’t mean we will have to keep hearing about her. This girl really bugs me!

    • kay/lv says:

she bugs me as well. I still think the main problem was she didnt like the attention on harry. Harry is the most popular royal and she would of always had to take a backseat to him. Shes used to being the focal point in the circle of friends she is in

  16. Mel says:

Anyone who is “on the lookout for a new girlfriend/boyfriend”, couldn’t have been in love.
Not that I believe even one tenth of what rags a la DM say.

  17. Eloise says:

Judi Dench, Christoph Waltz, Zach Galifianakis, Matt Morrison and Princess Cressy?! That is the most random movie line-up ever.

  18. fairy godmother says:

This movie could not even get made back in 2004. Has anyone actually read the book? It could not be made back then wonder if the film will be any good.

So the woman is now an add-on for name recognition alone?

She did that play last week and was not even in it for ten minutes- wonder if she will just be background like Bea in the Victoria movie. It is all about who one knows and she seems to be getting on and playing it quite well. Sorry to say good riddance to her and hope to hear/see less and less of her! She is no Diane Kruger that is for sure! Diane radiates beauty and personality not to mention has real talent!

    • Memme says:

My reaction when I read the title of this article was “Duh.” Her PR people were not working overtime the way they did for the past year for nothing. I’m surprised the general public is surprised.

This is a Harvey Weinstein production. With Judi Dench and Christoph Waltz at the helm. I highly doubt Delevigne, Lowe, and Bonas will have much, if any screen time. Their characters are insignificant in the book, so imagine a film adaptation?

The question is can she act? If she has solid acting chops she might be able to turn this into a more prominent career. To have this film on her resume, regardless of how much she appears in it, if at all, is big. If she can’t act, it won’t matter who she knows, she will fade into obscurity soon enough. Unless of course Harvey Weinstein picks her to be his new ‘muse’. If she chooses to go along with that she will be everywhere, much more than she is now. Only time will tell.

Either way, Camp Bonas tuned that fiddle to almost perfection and have been playing it extremely well.

  19. kay/lv says:

Katie nicholl is full of it. I think people got it right for once. right from the start. I think something serious happened after the ski trip to kazakstan. And it seems like cressidas blue dress and hand holding with beatrice didnt work on harry. The uk press has been trying to put this split back in cressidas corner as if the ball was ever in her court to begin with. I never believed they were anywhere near getting engaged. If you check the royal reporters twitter feeds and follow some of their links its really interesting what they have to say on there.
