Stella McCartney launches charity project alongside her new BFF Angelina Jolie

When Angelina Jolie and Stella McCartney collaborated on a kids’ clothing line inspired by Maleficent, I forced myself to not feel alarmed. Angelina loves an ill-fitting sack dress and Stella has little to no design skills, and I worried that the combo of Jolie + Stella would equal the worst sack dress ever. Alas, Angelina wore mostly Versace and Saint Laurent throughout her Maleficent tour. But she and Stella did develop some kind of friendship. And now they’re working together on a new project which was announced during Jolie’s co-hosted Global Summit to End Sexual Violence In Conflict. Stella IG’d the header photo, writing: “Launching the Draw me to Safety campaign to benefit War Child UK at today’s Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. X Stella #TimeToAct @maryamccartney #AngelinaJolie.” Here’s more:

STELLA McCARTNEY has joined forces with War Child to launch Draw Me To Safety, an international art project that has been designed to raise awareness of how children that are most affected by war see the world, while at the same time offering cognitive support to the most vulnerable. The project will ask young people, aged between eight to 15 in the UK and in conflict-affected countries, to create artwork based on the question: What makes you feel safe? McCartney will then create a fashion item based on the finished pieces, the profits from which will go directly to War Child.

“This project is about young people standing with children affected by conflict,” McCartney said. “Children see the world with clarity and honesty. War Child UK and I are excited to share their insights through art that will raise awareness and encourage the world to do more to protect children from war.”

“There are children across the world who don’t know what safety means because all they have ever seen is conflict,” Rob Williams, Chief Executive of War Child UK said. “Draw Me to Safety is about the power of children’s voices to talk directly to the world.”

The collaboration was announced at yesterday’s Global Summit To End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London, which was hosted by Angelina Jolie and William Hague.

“These are moving examples of how children who have lost so much see the world,” said Jolie. “I hope that this campaign will bring their world closer to us all, and that many people will feel inspired to help protect vulnerable children living in conflict zones.”

It sounds like a nice interactive project. I hope they raise a lot of money. It’s a good cause and it’s nice to see Angelina and Stella leverage their new friendship and their joined power to raise awareness (and money). Plus… I bet this pisses off Gwyneth Paltrow to no end. I know that’s a superficial thing to write, especially given the subject matter. But seriously. Stella must be exhausted with Gwyneth’s conversation skills about what food she’s eliminating this week and whether water has feelings. And there’s Angelina, doing important, serious work that affects women around the world. Who would you choose?

and thank you for your kind words.
i am very grateful for it, and for all the kind support i receive yesterday too. as well as Jenna and Jojoann who had shared their own harrowing experiences. more than any other internet message boards, Celebitchy is one of those very few boards where i feel a lot comfortable.

all my best wishes, and a heartfelt thanks to you and yours from me and mine.

Goop is the bullet that Brad dodged!

I love that they are doing a project that includes children. So important that we get kids involved as early as possible. They are going to be the ones to really change the world.

Stella is a Britt and I admire that she is working on this project that is in her own backyard.

There are videos of her and Angie walking around together.

I like Stella (no idea about design but hey, she sells). She seems to have a sense of humour and is fairly scrappy. I don’t know why but even the Goop association can’t ruin her for me.

  5. Godwina says:

I’ve already come out as a fan of (most) of Stella’s designs, and I honestly think she has native style like gangbusters. “It,” so to speak. Glad to see positive press and her something more substantial than fashion. This will be interesting…

This site owners’ see Paltrow in every corner, they have to mention her everytime they have the little chance to, I don’t know if this is lack of new ideas or some kind of psycho obsessive disorder. And before someone starts with the old joke asking if I’m her or her mother, don’t even bother please.

    • LAK says:

Nah!!! GOOP is the gift that keeps on giving that can be connected to almost anyone or anything in a 6 degrees (or less) of separation game sort of way.

      • Chris says:

Extremely dangerous words there LAK. 😉
GOOP will turn them into a Dan Brown version of String Theory physics.

    • annaloo. says:

Yes! Goop is always the punchline here! That’s one of the (many) things Celebitchy does best!

Stella is the one who was quoted in a magazine article a few years ago discussing how impressed she was on Scarlett Johansen’s intelligence. She said Scarlett came up to her at a cocktail party and opened the conversation with “nature or nurture”. I wrote them both off at that point. I was reminded of the scene from the movie Bridget Jones Diary where Bridget reads up on how to impress people by appearing intelligent when preparing for the book launch.

    • idsmith says:

I read a blind once that implied Scarlett basically studies up on subjects and spews what she reads verbatim in order to appear intelligent. Apparently she has no idea about the subjects and fakes it a la Bridget Jones. Don’t remember the exact details but somehow she was caught out when someone questioned her use of words and the subject matter and Scarlett couldn’t form a thought.

    • Isadora says:

Wow!I That’s embarrassing. And who would do this (learning stuff by heart and act your way through it) just for a cocktail party? Honestly, I would be way to lazy to put on this kind of facade…

  8. Eloise says:

I thought that was Lindsey Lohan. Oops!

  9. phlyfiremama says:

Lets see: Goop does nothing that doesn’t lead to her directly lining her own pockets. Stella already stands to inherit/has inherited more money than any one person could possibly need, from her mother (Eastman/Kodak heiress) and her father both. So, yeah, pay your rent for living on this planet by paying some of that forward. We all need to do our part, but sometimes the sheer gall of people who have so much more than everything and everyone asking those who have so much less to “reach deep” astounds me. Just my $.02
Hands down, the Jolie wins in every category over the Goops and Anistons of the world. Brad scored!!!

    • Duchess of Corolla says:

Linda McCartney’s family was not associated with Eastman/Kodak. Her father was an attorney, and her mother’s family owned department stores. That said, Stella does still stand to inherit a mega-fortune. I always wonder why she looks like such a sourpuss. Or, does she just have a BRF?

      • Belle Epoch says:

Grumpypants! Maybe Stella and Victoria Beckham both have atrophied smile muscles. As usual, Angelina gets it right. People want to see them looking happy and excited about this project. It sounds great.

  10. neelyo says:

Hopefully this will kepp McCartney too busy to design anymore.

  11. Suzy says:

I am wondering if that is where the T-shirt Brad has been wearing with the drawing of the couple on it is from. Perhaps a child drew it to show that B &A made them feel safe?

  12. Penelope says:

Well, at least Stella is putting her utter lack of talent to use for a good cause.

  13. Marny says:

Stella’s bored with Gwyneth’s conversation and moving onto Angelina? Why can’t she be friends with both? Why is it so fun to make women out to be shallow, one-dimensional people? There’s more to Gwyneth than her diet and there’s more to Angelina than her charity.
