Coldplay gets beaten by a bunch of girls at Brit Awards

The Brit Awards, The British Phonographic Industry’s annual pop music awards, were held last night. The biggest winner was Duffy and her debut album Rockferry. During one of her acceptance speeches, Duffy cursed on live television, but it doesn’t look like the speech police from America have invaded Britain, so nothing will probably happen to her. Other notable awards went to Kayne West, Katy Perry and Kings of Leon. Here’s a list of the winners, provided by The Daily Telegraph:

:: Mastercard British Album – Duffy ‘Rockferry’
:: British Group – Elbow
:: British Single – Girls Aloud ‘The Promise’
:: British Male Solo Artist – Paul Weller
:: British Female Solo Artist – Duffy
:: British Breakthrough Act – Duffy
:: British Live Act – Iron Maiden
:: International Album – Kings of Leon ‘Only By The Night’
:: International Group – Kings of Leon
:: International Male Solo Artist – Kanye West
:: International Female Solo Artist – Katy Perry
:: Critics’ Choice Award – Florence & The Machine
:: British Producer of the Year – Bernard Butler
:: Outstanding Contribution to Music – Pet Shop Boys

From The Daily Telegraph

The biggest loser of the night was Chris Martin and Coldplay. The group had been nominated for a bunch of awards, but failed to win any – they lost to a bunch of girls. Coldplay’s latest album (Viva La Vida) is a commercial success, and they just won several Grammys last week – yet the British people seem to have mixed feelings about the album and about Coldplay. The Daily Telegraph has more:

Although the group bagged a handful of Grammys they failed to live up to their hype on this side of the Atlantic. Their latest album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends topped the global sales chart last year with 6.6 million copies. But it lost out to Duffy’s Rockferry while the title single also missed out to Girls Aloud’s The Promise.

While their commercial success is certain, Coldplay’s style has received mixed reviews and, while nominated for best album at the Brits, they were also up for the worst album gong at the NME Awards later this month.

It was Elbow who walked off with Best Band category, while veteran rockers Iron Maiden ended Coldplay’s final hope of an award by scooping Best Live Act.

In the international categories, the Kings of Leon won best album and best group, while rapper Kanye West took best male. Katy Perry was named best international female.
Reaching number one in more than 30 countries, Viva La Vida was seen as a shoe-in for Best Album.

Their previous three albums – X&Y, A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Parachutes – have sold more than 30 million copies.

The group are currently on a huge world tour, which began last year and culminates this September with two nights at Wembley Stadium.

It is nine years since the band first earned worldwide fame with the release of Yellow, which quickly became the summer’s anthem of 2000.

From The Daily Telegraph

Even though I don’t really care for Coldplay’s music, I think the Brits are being a little harsh. So the album isn’t their best? So what? They’ll make other albums, and maybe one of them will be better.

I really don’t get Katy Perry. I realize I’m an old fart when it comes to what’s hip in music (I still think it’s Britney Spears), but I saw Katy perform live on the Grammy’s, and the performance was, in a word, rough. She’s not a live act. She’s a one-hit wonder who probably won’t be around the music business much longer.

Shown at the Brit awards are Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Estelle, Girls Aloud, Duffy, Taylor Swift, The Ting Tings, Natalie Imbruglia, KT Tunstall, Lionel Richie, and Pixie Geldof (in the white giant shirt without a bra.) Credit: WENN

Coldplay is overrated but I quite agree about Katy Perry.

  2. geronimo says:

Elbow and Coldplay, could they be further apart in talent? Delighted they won nothing, they’re not rated by anyone who cares about music.

Big Yay! for Duffy, Elbow, Kings of Leon and Pet Shop Boys.

  3. voodoobetty says:

I love Duffy! She is absolutely amazing and deserved these wins!

  4. Mrs.Darcy says:

It is always interesting to me the divide in British and American musical tastes (being an American living in Britain) Brits love anything camp/tongue in chic in a way Americans don’t quite get – hence Scissor Sisters, Gossip, and now Katy Perry being big over here. Whereas Coldplay just come across as bland and re-treading old stuff. They certainly didn’t deserve best single, Girls Aloud were long overdue on that front. I also like how Kings of Leon and the Killers pay tribute to Britain for their success (or in KOL case “England”, way to alienate the rest of the country morons!) which isn’t matched in America. Lady Gaga so did not deserve to be on stage with the Pet Shop Boys, now THAT was a sin!

  5. vale says:

Speaking of rough.. hello, Natalie Imbruglia?!

  6. Codzilla says:

Delighted that Coldplay went home empty-handed, since their music is the artistic equivalent of a root canal … But Iron Maiden as best live act? Maybe in 1985, but now?

  7. voodoobetty says:

I dont understand the win by Paul Weller. What’s he put out thats been at all commercial successful in the past 20 yrs? The British seem to like to drag out old acts from the 80’s who aren’t very relevant anymore but still kicking around and throw them a bone every now and then.

  8. the original kate says:

i love elbow! and what has natalie imbuglia done to her face?! also, why does this post point out that coldplay lost to a “bunch of girls”…is that supposed to be an insult or something?

  9. daisy424 says:

    Great headline Kaiser, lol!

Pet Shop Boys, now there’s a blast from the past, alright!

  10. voodoobetty says:

I dont think Natalie Imbruglia did anything to her face I just think the hair doesn’t suit her at all.

  11. paris herpes says:

Coldplay doesn’t deserve to win anything IMO. If they want to remain musically relevant they need to change it up a bit and stop copying bands like Travis and Radiohead. Katy Perry is a one-hit wonder and the PSB ROCK! I love them to bits!

  12. The Old KC says:

Does anybody besides me think that Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry are secretly the same person? Have they ever been spotted together? : )

  13. Caro says:

Voodoobetty. What are you on about? Weller released a successful album this year? And if we are so happy to drag out old acts, how come so many acts make it in the States as well? RUBBISH! Coldplay are bland so quite why the argument from celebitchy is that the brits were too harsh? What do you expect? A pity award? NO! Rockferry was a good album and she deserved a win. Although I will give yoU Iron Maiden.

Agreed with the American in the UK. We just like that tongue in cheek stuff but not just that, many rockbands from the States are far bigger here than back home (Kings of Leon and Killers for instance).

British music still rocks. Coldplay however, well I am glad they do so well in the States. At home people see them as a Radiohead tribute act. Now THAT is a real band!

  14. Caro says:

BTW I got my tickets! but PSB are performing in the O2. General tickets on sale tomorrow but get them via Live Nation (NO I am not spamming). They were AMAZING yesterday. Ga Ga. Not so much.

  15. voodoobetty says:

@Caro if you would take a laxative and actually READ my post it says “I dont understand the win by Paul Weller. What’s he put out that’s been at all commercial successful in the past 20 yrs?” which is in fact a QUESTION. Seeing as Paul Weller is vaguely known in the US where I live now I had no clue he’d put anything out recently. He certainly hadn’t put anything out very noteworthy in the 9 years I was in the UK. Jesus settle down Beavis.

  16. pebbles says:

that top photo! egads! who. did. this. woman’s. makeup?????!!!

  17. Ally says:

The Brits consider Coldplay a “big wet bag of arse”, justifiably. Their songs have no edge.

  18. meow mix says:

It is Britians way of letting Chris Martin know that they would really like him to take his wife (insert GOOP) back to America and stay there.
I can’t listen to them anymore without thinking of how insufferable she is.
Gwene ruined Coldplay. I hope she’s happy.

  19. Ashley says:

The Brits were just being smart. They know Coldplay ripped off artists and they’re not going to reward them like those idiots at the Grammy’s did.

Ditto to the Gwyneth comment. Anything Paltrow touches turns to s**t. Although Martin does a good job at sabotaging that band with his own ego.

Katy Perry IS a one hit wonder, when will she go away?

  20. ChristinaX says:

    …Go Iron Maiden!

  21. Trashaddict says:

Watch out Mrs. Darcy, you’re sounding kind of Gwyneth-mouthed. And a puckered little thing it is, too. Liberace was the king of Camp. Tom Lehrer – definitely tongue in cheek. Madonna – both (tongue in and tongue OUT). B52s – campy and FUN. Christina Aguilera – camp and ain’t even TRYING to be. Cake – listen to “I want a girl with a short skirt and a LOONG jacket”! Sorry most of these references are old school, but I’m sure people will help me out with more recent ones.

  22. Diva says:

    Love, love, love Duffy!

How is Katy Perry a “one hit wonder” when she’s had three hit songs?

I don’t love her, but just because we don’t like her doesn’t mean there aren’t a whole hell of alot of others who do. I know quite a few 16-year old girls who love her.

  23. voodoobetty says:

Im surprised nobody has mentioned the fashion disaster worn by the girl in the first pic below the story. Not Duffy. i mean the pics below. I dont know who she is (Estelle maybe?) but she loks like she cut the bottom off one of Joan Collins’ old dresses from Dynasty and wore it

LOL Pixie Geldof bringing a giant PURSE on the red carpet! LOL Idiot. She must have used it to smuggle out bottles of champagne.

  24. Jem says:

I just got home from Iron Maiden and they were awesome!

I had coffee with Janick from Iron Maiden the day after the Brits, he told me they won and that no one in the band thought they would win because some commercial act like Coldplay would…and he was like “YES WE F**KING WILL!” YAY!

  25. What's all the hype about??? says:

YAY for Kings of Leon! I love them and “Revelry” is like the best song of ’08!

I digress. Why the hell are ppl complaining about Coldplay ripping off artists while you praise Duffy’s sorry ass? She can’t even sing! At least Katy Perry can sing (but I hate the majority of her lyrics). Point is… Duffy sucks. I DO NOT respect an artist advertising a genre her ass has NO right to be in let alone even compared to a WAY better singer (who shall remain nameless) who actually did do the genre some good.

Rockaberry was good only if you like hearing a chick scream off key for 45mins. That sh*t was wack and I can’t believe ppl are actually giving her credit like she really did something important.

  26. voodoobetty says:

Its Rockferry not Rockaberry and Duffy has a gorgeous voice quite reminiscent of Dusty Springfield with a modern edge. I guess if you took your head out of your backside you’d be better able to hear the music.

Why exactly does she not belong in her genre of music?

  27. Diva says:

If you listened to something that was some chick “screaming” anything, it was NOT Duffy. What Duffy does is the furthest thing from screaming. She’s got a gorgeous voice and uses it in a fantasticly stylized way, ideal for her GENRE.
