Gary Oldman apologizes to Anti-Defamation League for his Playboy interview

wenn21046872

All week we’ve been talking about Gary Oldman’s douche explosion in a new Playboy interview. On Monday, the most offensive quotes were released through an exclusive with the Daily Mail, then Playboy hurried up and released the whole thing so we could read the offensive comments in context, but it didn’t make that much of a difference. Gary was not prodded into a weird position, his words were not taken out of context. He really defended Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin, he really used the n-word and “f-g” in the interview, and he really did talk about how Jews run Hollywood. Which seems almost quaint, because the new meme is that gay people run Hollywood, everybody knows that!!

Anyway, it’s the Jewish stuff that seems to have gotten Gary in the most trouble, which is just weird because I personally thought Gary offended African-Americans WAY more. But the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement yesterday to Deadline, which read in part:

“The British actor remarked that, ‘Mel Gibson is in a town that’s run by Jews and he said the wrong thing because he’s actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him.” The ADL says the remarks “irresponsibly feed into a classic anti-Semitic canard about supposed Jewish control of Hollywood and the film industry,” said ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman. “He should know better than to repeat and give credence to tired anti-Semitic tropes. Mel Gibson’s ostracization in Hollywood was not a matter of being ‘politically incorrect,’ as Mr. Oldman suggests, but of paying the consequences for outing himself as a bigot and a hater. It is disturbing that Mr. Oldman appears to have bought into Mr. Gibson’s warped and prejudiced world view.” Foxman adds that the assertion that Jews control Hollywood…”is an anti-Semitic stereotype based on the ‘Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion,’ the 19th Century anti-Semitic forgery that suggested Jews conspire to control major industries such as banking and finance.”

[From Deadline]

I would argue that Mel Gibson’s “ostracization” wasn’t merely because he was and is a “bigot and a hater,” but also because he’s a violent, woman-beating misogynist. Why does Mel get a pass for that consistently? We don’t hate Mel because he just said a bunch of awful things. We also hate him because he beats, threatens and stalks women. Anyway, Gary issued an open letter to the ADL, via Deadline:

Dear Gentlemen of the ADL:

I am deeply remorseful that comments I recently made in the Playboy Interview were offensive to many Jewish people. Upon reading my comments in print—I see how insensitive they may be, and how they may indeed contribute to the furtherance of a false stereotype. Anything that contributes to this stereotype is unacceptable, including my own words on the matter. If, during the interview, I had been asked to elaborate on this point I would have pointed out that I had just finished reading Neal Gabler’s superb book about the Jews and Hollywood, An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews invented Hollywood. The fact is that our business, and my own career specifically, owes an enormous debt to that contribution.

I hope you will know that this apology is heartfelt, genuine, and that I have an enormous personal affinity for the Jewish people in general, and those specifically in my life. The Jewish People, persecuted thorough the ages, are the first to hear God’s voice, and surely are the chosen people.

I would like to sign off with “Shalom Aleichem”—but under the circumstances, perhaps today I lose the right to use that phrase, so I will wish you all peace–Gary Oldman.

[From Deadline]

I chuckled at “Shalom Aleichem” – nice touch, Gary. Gary Oldman: what a mensch!! I take Gary at his word that he’s sorry for what he said, but I still think A) he has more apologizin’ to do because he offended more groups than just the ADL and B) Oldman still has to grovel for a few more weeks/months. He needs to go on a Jonah Hill-style apology tour.

Oh, and TMZ spoke to Mel Gibson’s original arresting officer back in 2006. Guess what? The police officer is Jewish and has never said anything anti-Semitic in his life. Amazing.

  1. Kiddo says:

    A) This is performance art.
    B) The rep for the upcoming movie wrote this, fearing loss of revenue.
    C) This is subversive sarcasm disguised as an apology.

    All of the above?

    • Lindy79 says:

      A little from Column A, B and C methinks

(Is he only apologising to people as their complaints come in? Nothing about the defense of Baldwin or Gibson’s homophobia here so he must be waiting for GLAAD to write to him)

    • Esmom says:

      Definitely all of the above.

    • Josephine says:

I’m going with all of the above. After ranting about hypocrisy, he is first in line to apologize to keep his bottom line alive, the ultimate hypocrisy. Sigh.

      • Annaloo. says:

Well, true that. What is the saying? “When you point a finger at someone, there three pointing right back at you”?

Very true in this case as this story develops…

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

If you read his original rant, he feels the need to end it by stating that although everyone is a hypocrite, “there’s nothing like this in my history.” He already proved that he’s either a coward or a hypocrite before he even got around to apologizing.

    • aquarius64 says:

D – all of the above. Oldham must be up for projects and now his racist rant hurt his chances; or he has upcoming projects that could take a financial hit over this act of stupidity.

    • Erinn says:

I really don’t think he’s sorry AT ALL for what he said. He’s sorry that he got some backlash, and still isn’t THAT sorry about it.

    • Sighs says:

So I’m not the only one who got a whole lot of (C) going on? Wow.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I go with B. You don’t SAY those things by accident. He made several consistent remarks stating that everybody really “thinks those things” and just a few are called out for expressing it honestly. He’s not sorry.

      • Kiddo says:

So you’re only slightly less cynical than I am. You don’t think he’s giving veiled F* u.

      • Jojoann says:

Oh thank you Kiddo. Hes clever, I’ll give him that. He knows he cant be called out on this simpering mess of an “apology”.

This is like when your mum tells you to apologise to your little brother for calling him a d*ck and you go like “I’m sooooo sorry my dearest brother. You are not a d*ck, you remind me of a unicorn riding over a rainbow. I just finished reading a book on your overwhelming awesomeness. I cant say your name because you are soooo much worthier than me so I’ll just call you My Lord henceforth”

      • Jojoann says:

Oh Happy Day!! I take my previous post back. They ARE calling him out on his bullshit.

        See here http://variety.com/2014/film/news/gary-oldman-apologies-for-remarks-about-jews-and-hollywood-1201246251/

Summary; ADL says “At this point, we are not satisfied with what we have received. His apology is insufficient and not satisfactory.”

      • Sam says:

        @Jojoann

While I agree that GO was being sarcastic, Foxman actually says “While his apology may be heartfelt, Mr. Oldman does not understand why his words about Jewish control were so damaging and offensive, and it is therefore insufficient.”

If Foxman sincerely thinks that Oldman was being heartfelt and not trolling, then he should accept the apology rather than demand Oldman recite a particular script.

Foxman goes on to say that Jewish filmmakers act as individuals rather than as a borg. This is a valid point, but at the same time a person’s background affects his/her outlook. That’s the argument for diversity.

      • andypandy says:

This is the most sarcastic F $$ U non apology ever

    • mimif says:

      D) His mini Winston Churchill nose is very telling.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

He’s clearly NOT sorry .As i was agree with him on some points( Golden Golden, the too politically correct and double standard Hello Ari Emmanuel) as his sarcastic apology is worse

      • Tammy says:

So we pick & choose whose apologies we accept? Anyone who uses any kind of derogatory slur whether it be Jonah Hill, Gary Oldman, Mel Gibson & Alec Baldwin have some major issues…at least three out of the four can either argue they were angry or drunk…Gary can’t. But there’s no excuse! None. However, Hollywood is hypocritical like Gary says…they look over Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, Terry Richardson. …..they’re actions are far more damaging than derogatory slurs at people. It’s easier to get over being called something nasty than it is to recover from sexual abuse.

      • Kiddo says:

Yes, people do pick and choose. Sincerity does make a difference. If your not f*ing sorry, then don’t say you are.

      • T.C. says:

Of course he is not sorry, he is sorry he got called out. The apology using the old I have Jewish friends and read about Jews is so bad that it’s funny. Glad he left out the my best friends are Black, Gay, and Women after using slurs for all three of those groups.

      • Kiddo says:

        @myself…Man, Typos, all over…YOU’RE

    • Godwina says:

It’s all so *weird*. He rants in Playboy about celebs having to issue apologies for saying racist things, while saying racist things himself, then issues own apology. Oldman’s not without cunning so clearly he knew he was setting himself up for this. It’s so *weird.*

      • kri says:

@Tammy you are totally right for calling out woody, Polanski, etc. But this felt much less like an apology and much more of a “I’m sorry you got offended” thing. I’m not buying it, Gary. And I did like you.So disappointing.

    • MoxyLady007 says:

Eat a bag of dicks, Gary.

    • I Choose Me says:

Yeppers. I vote all of the above. I could practically hear the sarcasm dripping from the last two paragraphs.

    • ol cranky says:

      It is absolutely c

this is not an apology, this is a big FU posing as a pseudo apology

  2. original kay says:

    nope.

  3. maybeiamcrazy says:

The apology drips with sarcasm. I LOVE IT! At the same time, I feel guilty for loving it because he is a bigoted piece of sh-t. I would call this ultimate badass apology if his views hadn’t disgusted me just yesterday.

    • Liv says:

Yeah, I’m more and more convinced that he is being sarcastic. What I don’t get is that he said we all said things like that. Um, I didn’t.

I wish he would shut up now, he’s absolutely ruining Sirius for me.

      • Sighs says:

He was never a good choice for Sirius anyway. Way too old and not nearly sexy enough.

  4. Ag says:

“Dear Gentlemen”? what a d*ck. can’t even get that right. on top of being a racist d-bag, he’s also a sexist one. wow. but not surprising.

    • Tulip says:

Thank-you AG. It was the first thing I noticed as well. He gets a pass if the ADL truly is only men, but…I really don’t think that is the case.

      • Ag says:

it’s sexist bs, i see it at work all the time – women are not presumed to what, work? hold positions other than the ones traditionally held by women? it’s such bs – sad esp since most people write stuff like that without even thinking, it’s automatic, ingrained sexism. this makes his non-apology apology even more of a sham for me.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Ladies aren’t supposed to know about Playboy or what is said in a Playboy interview so they wouldn’t be offended and thus, do not merit an apology from Gary. Their only value is to expose their body parts in Playboy, which Gary didn’t have to do.

    • Omega says:

You forget this is the guy who couldnt just say that he doesnt support Hillary Clintons politics. He had to go onto some stupid rant about how he isnt sexist and its not because she is a woman. That was my first clue that it probably IS because she is a woman.

The same guy who bemoans that twerking popstars are heroes because they are corrupting our youth conveniently forgets that he is no paragon of morality himself. This is the guy that married Uma, then a 19 year old girl, who he met when she was 17 years old and with who he cheated on his wife. He then proceeded to divorce her two years later. But no he isnt a corrupting influence. Oh and he admits to sleeping with groupies and looks back on those days with much relish but you know, he still isnt a corrupting influence. Its the women who corrupt, everyone knows that.

  5. Wren33 says:

Most of it reads as honest and a great apology, but this part maybe me raise my eyebrows, “The Jewish People, persecuted thorough the ages, are the first to hear God’s voice, and surely are the chosen people.” It just seems like sarcasm, unless he is super religious.

    • L says:

It reads as sarcasm to me as well.

I’d rather have him not apologize that this BS line. It comes off as totally fake and insincere.

    • Esmom says:

Agreed. At first I was like “wow, he’s really laying it on thick,” and then I re-read everything and realized the only thing he cares about is saving this movie/his career and yet can’t even bring himself to appear to apologize sincerely.

  6. PunkyMomma says:

Too little, too late. Sit down and STFU.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      No bivalves for Gary.

      • PunkyMomma says:

Nope. Those are reserved for You-Know-Who.🐚🐚🐚

      • Lilacflowers says:

I really need some happy news, like Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Hiddleston babysit Prince George and take him to a children’s hospital where they all give out puppies or something. Something totally ludicrous, cuddly, sweet, and fun. Oh well, off to work.

      • Sighs says:

Can Hiddles have his shirt off in this scenario? And replace Jennifer Lawrence with someone like HBC or Emma Thompson. Not that I don’t love JLaw.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Oh, Emma would be fabulous! And yes, Tom can have his shirt off; this is in response to a Playboy interview after all. Gary must not look so great with his shirt off.

    • LadyMacbeth ex Hiddles F. says:

Ah came to post exactly that.. Too late, especially!

  7. Esmom says:

What? In naming that book he basically reiterates that he thinks Jews run Hollywood, doesn’t he? Too little, too late if you ask me.

    • BangersandMash says:

Every sentence he wrote there was accompanied by some massive eye rolling on his part. He was being sarcastic the whole way through, and then topped it off with, Shalom Aleichem…

This Oldman is giving everyone a non apology of theatrical proportions.

He’s not personally sorry for anything, he’s ‘career’ sorry.

    • Sighs says:

Um yeah. Like, hey, read this book and you’ll see what I’m talking about. :Massive eye rolling:

    • T.Fanty says:

Followed up by the horrifically clumsy book reference, which is one step up from “some of my best friends are Jews.”

  8. Hannah says:

Keep them apologies coming, Gary. One down, 18 to go.

  9. L says:

So he’s not going to apologize for using the ‘n-word’ then huh? That’s still totally fine. As is the f-word apparently. /sarcasm

PR apology written by his press person. Fake and insincere.

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

It is so obvious the he wrote that. It is not even a real apology! I feel like it is an even bigger f-ck off to the Jews.

      • BangersandMash says:

        Agreed.

This guy isn’t apologizing for ANYTHING!!! He’s ‘work’ sorry, not personally sorry.

  10. Lilacflowers says:

So, will he be embarking on an apology tour now, issuing a “most sincere apology” to every group he offended while keeping his name in the news?

    • Lindy79 says:

I’m now imagining him in one of those old timey sideshow carts with a guy in a straw boater shouting “step right up, step right up and see the racist, homophobic bigot while he backpeddles his way across his career tightrope”

      • Lilacflowers says:

Making me want to go see Hamlet in London next year, just so I can boo repeatedly every time he opens his mouth to speak.

  11. David99 says:

He has a really good PR person.

  12. Ms. Lady says:

Apologizing because he got called out on his bullshit. PC my ass Gary, and no it is not refreshing to hear you say those horrible things, what is refreshing is that people are starting to realize that it truly isn’t edgy to say racist/homophobic/ bigoted slurs, now that is refreshing. I hope he feels like a real jackass after this, for a very long time.

  13. Sixer says:

Honestly, I have been kinda laughing all week. I know it’s not funny but it hadn’t occurred to me that people thought GO was anything other than a chippy, reactionary old fart. We have lots of nice people in Britain, but he is representative of an archetype that has views that are um… not so nice. You know: there’s a reason he’s gone for the “law and order” comic book films like Batman and Robocop and not the allegories of racism like X Men. Them’s his politics.

But this apology has miffed me off. He invoked God? Gary is religious all of a sudden? Gary suddenly thinks that the Jews are the chosen people and not the evil conspirators of Mel Gibson’s fevered imagination? Really? What an about turn. Why say what he said then? Sorry, Gary – at least when you’re being offensive you’re saying what you actually think. Now you’re just testing my credulity and coming off even worse.

    • Lilacflowers says:

His apology is to demonstrate his acting ability and it isn’t an Oscar-worthy performance.

      • Sixer says:

It’s just infuriating, isn’t it? Can you believe that Gary Oldman, of all people, would ever use obsequious language like that, however in the wrong he was? As you say, acting FAIL.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Especially after saying how appalling he thought such behavior was in others. Hypocrisy, thy name is Gary Oldman.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Oh it’s just so insulting on so many levels. Now he’s pandering. Just shut up!

    • Kiddo says:

I read it in a sarcastic tone. Like” The Jewish People, PERSECUTED thorough the ages, are the FIRST to hear God’s voice, and SURELY are the CHOSEN people.” It helps if you envision finger air quotation marks, as well. lol

Next up, Gary’s rep will recommend that he have a stint in rehab, even if he’s not drinking.

    • Eve says:

      @ Sixer:

I vowed not to post on threads like this anymore but I read your comment and have to say this: leave my beloved RoboCop (both the original and the remake) out of this!!!

But I agree, this is not an apology at all — like someone said upthread, it sounds like an even bigger f*ck off to the Jews. Plus, he insulted more than one group of people in that interview.

Seriously, I’d rather have him not apologizing at all.

    • Sixer says:

@ Eve – I almost didn’t say that, cos I knew you’d be along to give me a bollocking! But you see what I’m saying about the political themes underlying those films?

@ all – ok. I’m reading again with my sarcasm-radar on. And yes. I find that marginally less annoying, actually. But then I also feel somewhat ashamed that I find it marginally less annoying!

I can like people for their talent even if I completely disagree with their politics but um… even I have limits. I like snark but even I have limits. If that’s sarcasm, it truly is wank-tastic. (Sixlet Minor said wank-tastic the other day and, despite remonstrating with him, I have stolen it for frequent use).

      • Eve says:

But the whole point of RoboCop movies is precisely the opposite of said politicis (especially the original, that is a flat out satire). They show how giant (private) corporations shouldn’t be providing public services, that unethical procedures are done regardless of the law…

The new movie even points out the use of drones in places out of the USA and Samuel L. Jackson plays a character that is a parody of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck — with all their mannerisms and “if you’re not with us, then you’re with them” rhetoric.

Oldman, ironically, plays the “nice guy” who — at one point — starts fighting the system (he’s the scientist who “develops” RoboCop at the big bad villain’s request, sort of against his own will).

That’s it: you have to rewatch the original again — and then watch the remake (with my boyfriend Kinnaman).

P.S.: This one was “strike two”. Don’t think for a second I’ve forgotten the whole José Mourinho crush.

      • Sixer says:

My Eve: I will cede, lest you decide you love me no longer. (And really cede, also).

      • Eve says:

        Scanning for sarcasm…¬¬

Oh, you know I’ll always love you.

      • Sixer says:

        *smooches*

    • alex_r says:

I agree with everything you said except for choosing Batman because of his conservative views. Chris Nolan offered him the part of Ras-Al-Ghul but Oldman, who apparently was tired of playing bad guys wanted to play Gordon. I have no idea why he did RoboCop though. Porbably money. He is after all the man who was in that third rate werewolf that I can’t bother to look up on IMDB.

i have to say his comments have totally bummed me. I have been a fan for a long time and then he does this.

    • T.Fanty says:

You see, I had the completely opposite reaction. The interview made me grind my teeth, but the apology made me laugh out loud. It takes a real set to send something like that out into the world.

      • Sixer says:

Ha. Yes. I seem to have had a humour fail, don’t I? Perhaps because I come into contact with Gary-clones on a too-regular basis. There’s an element of white flight where I live – the West Country people are lovely, but the city-escapees are all Ukippers and not lovely. Gary would like them, though.

      • Eve says:

I’m too busy laughing at all the memes featuring Uruguayan player Luis Suarez (and his love of biting fellow football players).

      • T.Fanty says:

Oh, to laugh isn’t to dismiss the severity of what he says. On a more general note, it’s repugnant to find this kind of discourse becoming permissible, and more and entering political debate. In a weird way, it’s almost a good thing that he’s saying this. So much of this kind of bigotry is danced around, and cloaked in rhetoric that attempts to deny the prejudice in what is being said, that it’s kind of refreshing for some fool to just open their mouth and confirm what you know they’re thinking. I’m just sad that it came from Gary.

      • Sixer says:

@ Fanty: yes. If they say it, you can argue against it. You weren’t surprised though, were you?

@ Eve: Twitter is very funny on that topic, non? It’s all the more enjoyable chez Sixer since it was a Chelsea player he bit last time and since his club is Liverpool, the bete noir of Sixlet Minor.

      • Eve says:

        Indeed:

        http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BIZQpP3CAAEA0Je.jpg:large

I watched ESPN late night report and it was filled with twitter messages (they show them on the screen while journalists discuss every match’s every single detail). Someone tweeted that he should have his (vaccine) shots checked. Another one said he should a muzzle next time.

        Then I found this:

        http://theunclemikeshow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Suarez-muzzle-009.jpg

But my favourite so far is this one:

        http://i1.cdnds.net/13/17/618×472/odd_suarez_bite_1.jpg

      • Sixer says:

        I like this one:

        http://bit.ly/1nGlR8q

      • Eve says:

They’re all hilarious. Being serious now…he was extremely irresponsible (besides behaving like a rabid dog, of course) because it’s almost certain Uruguay won’t have him for the next match(es).

        Have to go now.

        *waves*

      • Lilacflowers says:

@sixer, I love that one. An office colleague has that as her screen saver.

  14. pretty says:

i just don’t understand how he was so sure of himself that EVERYBODY casually uses N word and F word in private. And calls everyone hypocrite. lol…. that was really telling..

    • Lindy79 says:

I suppose if he surrounds himself with like-minded folks then that’s how he comes to the conclusion everyone has the same views as him?

  15. Lilacflowers says:

Dear Gary, to follow up on letter to you in the last thread, this is the second day in a row in which you have taken a podium to express your views and have reached a wide-spread audience in doing so. Whilst on your apology tour, care to recant on your claim that you don’t have access to a podium? Again, Playboy didn’t publish pictures of your whoha.

    • delorb says:

Actual, tears! Just reading the word ‘whoha’ is enough to send me over the edge! I think I laughed for a good 5 minutes on the other thread too.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I’m guessing that the folks at Playboy weren’t impressed with Gary’s whoha so they didn’t take any pictures.

  16. Fab says:

He doesnt have to. He is right.Same over here.Just like hair seems fragile, so we tread it that way. HAIR IS THE STRONGEST strings on earth.

  17. Renee says:

When I was a kid I thought that the Anti-Defamation League spoke out against all forms of discrimination, not just antisemitism. I was a bit disappointed to learn that they don’t. I wish that all groups, like the NAACP, and GLAAD, would issue support statements when slanderous statements are made against any marginalized group and particularly, when idiots like Mel Gibson and now this tool, utter discriminatory slurs that affect members of all three groups in particular. Also, because there are gay people who are Jewish, and gay people who are black, and people who are black and Jewish and gay, this certainly would be the time to show some form of solidarity.

    • Luca26 says:

      I love this comment!

    • Ms. Lady says:

      +infinity

    • Omega says:

The problem is that there are gay racists and Jewish homophobes and black anti-semites. Alot of people, even within the equality movement, still havent figured out that we face the same enemy.

What I want to know is why there isnt an organisation that pushes for womens interests??? Seriously, you could smell how excited he was to be calling Pelosi a c*nt while pretending to just be illustrating a point. I feel like there is so much misogyny that would be unacceptable if it was about another marginalised group, but gets a pass because “hey its only women”.

      • I Choose Me says:

Good points as well. That Nancy Pelosi is a c*nt comment did not escape my notice. GO went all out ugly in his interview.

      • lrm says:

well, if we ‘all face the same enemy’, then that enemy is found within all groups, illustrated by your comment. It’s the enemy of bigotry, racism, prejudice, etc etc. And is not exclusive to the current dominant group -ie, white males.
So better to look at the issue this way than ‘us vs. them (the enemy)’ mentality.

    • I Choose Me says:

And this is why I love Celebitchy. Such thoughtful, insightful, on the money posts. I’ve gotten over my disappointment in Gary Oldman and now I’m just loving the discourse that his comments have generated.

  18. Jen2 says:

His greeting says it all. “Gentlemen of the ADL”. So I guess he still thinks the women are c–nts. I would prefer him owning his crap to this obvious “save my career” nonsense. I guess the other groups have to call him out to get their apologies. Drip, drip, drip….

  19. Talie says:

So he just did the one thing he hates seeing celebrities do: Apologize for speaking their “truth.” Weird, meta, strange…

  20. DrFunkenstein says:

What a jerk. Obviously thinks he’s terrifically clever, and worse still, seems to be playing to the bigots in the audience with this “apology”. He made it clear yesterday that he had no use for “political correctness” (which most of us associate with basic courtesy and decency, by the way), and the snarky nonsense about the Jewish people simply reinforces that position. Jerk.

  21. BangersandMash says:

Somewhere out there, Mel is meeting up with Gary and the first thing he says, “Gary F-cking Oldman!! Shalom!!”

And the two of them are cracking up as they go through this apology together, line for line.

    This is flamboyant, theatrical nonsense!!!

    • Sam says:

Nonsense. Mel has many faults, but he is never snide. Mel’s two apologies were very sincere-sounding.

  22. eliza says:

Apologies from celebrities…..ALL OF THEM, ring hollow with me. My feeling is generally they mean exactly what they say and only when the public backlash gets to them, do they see the insensitivity and error of their ways.

If you are going to be a jerk. Own being a jerk. Don’t apologize AFTER you are raked over the coals. Just don’t say idiotic crap in the first place.

These actors only apologize for PR purposes. I feel they are never sincere.

  23. Green Is Good says:

I have have been a huge fan of Gary Oldman for years all the way back to Sid & Nancy, and this story really disappointed me with GO. I respect him as a brilliant, talented actor. As a person? Not so much . I wondered if he was drunk when he did his interview, because he was so belligerent.

    • PennyLane says:

Yes, I thought the same thing – however at another point in the interview, Oldman proudly discusses his 17 years of being sober and how much better his life is now.

If this is what Gary Oldman is like sober, I’d HATE to see him drunk.

  24. Frida_K says:

I’m still too surprised and disappointed by his original remarks to give any sort of credence to this non-apology.

I loved Gary Oldman in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (just to name one of his many excellent roles). Reading his comments yesterday really made me feel sad.

The horse is out of the barn now. It is not going back in, Mr. Oldman.

  25. Marmaduke45 says:

Wow. Just…wow. He’s putting down so many things, it’s hard to know which one to pick up first.

The only thing worse than no apology, is an insincere apology. It’s like adding insult to injury.

Sid to Dracula to Beethoven to Sirius Black to DICK.

    • Santolina says:

Right? Ironically, Sid Vicious wasn’t even as racist as the guy who played him.

  26. Monkey Towz says:

I’m so disapointed about this. I’ve had lust for GO since I was a teenager. He always joined me & Alan Rickman in my fantasy threesome.
I hate that inauthentic apology. I hope that the financial retribution he receives from this will at least open his eyes a bit, b/c you know, once these guys get hit in their wallet, they become very sorry indeed. Ugh.

  27. grace says:

I can’t take this apology seriously. He’s either being sarcastic or just not true to what he stated in the Playboy interview. Either way, it’s disappointing.

  28. Santolina says:

I used to admire Oldman as an actor and I’m sad to learn he’s such a racist. The apology doesn’t sound like him, and was probably written by his PR team. They should have kept it short and included the other groups he insulted. I guess there was too much hate in that interview for one apology to cover. How disappointing.

    • Renee says:

Your comment is funny but true and sad “I guess there was too much hate in that interview for one apology to cover” – it hurts my heart a little bit even though it made me laugh.

  29. bobslaw says:

I love the Jews! I just read a whole book about ’em. And it’s completely not my fault that the interviewer didn’t host a book club roundtable so I could talk about that book I just read!

  30. MissTrial says:

    ” blah , blah, blah , blah , blah”

Sums it up. Just like his recent commercial.

  31. Jaderu says:

How sad that Justin Beiber’s apology sounded more honest and heartfelt than this.
Disappointment in one of my favorite actors has now become disgust and the inability to think of anything other than his hate and bigotry whist watching him act.

  32. allheavens says:

Jesus, his apology is ridiculous, the “reading made me do it” defense is jaw-dropping.

Just do you Gary and let your career shrivel to the size of your microscopic balls. It’s much deserved.

  33. starfan says:

It’s disappointing because he was one of my favourite actors & now I won’t be able to separate his onscreen persona from the real life bigot. I don’t think he cares because he is quite vocal about doing things for money only & shit talks a lot of his own work.
The media will let him get away with being rude because he’s a guy & even call him a “hero” for being a Ahole. Just watch.

  34. in_theory says:

Can there ever be a false stereotype? All stereotypes are false, because they generalise. Is there a true stereotype?

Other than that I don’t like when people say something like “but some of my best friends are xyz”, therefore I can’t really be racist/anti-Semitic/whatever else.

  35. Ana says:

He’s not apologizing because he’s sorry for his language– he’s just sorry that people criticized him for it. He still needs to apologize for defending homophobia and or calling the former Speaker of the House a “worthless c—.” When he does that, maybe I’ll believe him.

  36. Feebee says:

I think I’m the only one amused by his “apology”. It’s the best non-apology apology out there. He doesn’t say I’m not sorry by saying I’m sorry you were offended, he says I’m not sorry with spectacular sarcasm. Loved it!

He’s not going to apologise. He hasn’t really thought about the impact of his original interview and how he came across. He probably doesn’t care. Which is a shame because now we have to deal with the reality of the situation which ranges from fantasy killer to racist, sexist bigot. Ugh.

    • megsie says:

I’m laughing. Rolled my eyes reading the first interview, but this statement is flamboyant, stunningly sarcastic, 100% Gary.

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

I laughed too. I guess if you think you are absolutely right, sarcastic apology is the way to go.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

It’s worse! He really is a jerk here.Don’t do some apologies when it doesn’t sound honest

  37. Liz says:

His apology starts out sincere but that comment about Jewish people being the “chosen” is not. LOL!

Why defend angry men like Mel and Alec? I don’t get it. Back in the mid 90’s when Mel was famous I used to hear whispers at work (hospital) about how certain people of a certain race could not be around Mel because he was a “racist”. I was too young and out the loop to be told all the details but his despicable beliefs were not a secret.

    • megsie says:

There isn’t anything sincere about that non apology apology. Gary’s f*ing with them and enjoying himself doing it.

    • Renee says:

When I was a kid, around 13, I remember reading the Mel was sexist and I knew that he was homophobic…Winona Rider also mentioned being at a party with him in the 90s and him calling her a furnace dodger because she was Jewish…she said that people knew, they just didn’t care.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

Explain me his friendship with Jodie Foster or Richard Donner!
He’s rumored to be the biologic father of Foster’s kids in more

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Liz, well, sincere only to the Jews who are males perhaps. The women got left out of the salutation.

  38. Jojoann says:

Thats how you know how insincere this “apology” is. He is reinforcing his statement on Jews “owning Hollywood”. In ignoring everyone else (black people, gay people and ……..lets not forget women) he is saying that when the Jews complain, we grovel, because you know they are all powerful or some such thing. In his stupid mind he has just proved that Jews are a special class.

This nasty piece of sh*t is dead to me now.

    • PennyLane says:

Agreed – this ‘apology’ is way worse than his original comments. That statement he released is dripping with sarcasm and contempt.

It’s unfortunate because he’s a talented actor, but Gary Oldman really is a nasty piece of work.

    • Sam says:

      @PennyLane

Yup. Either make a sincere apology or stand by your statements. While he only addressed his sarcasm to the ADL, of course others are going to feel belittled by the snide “chosen people” remark.

  39. hmmm says:

I cringed when I first read it last night. Couldn’t figure out my discomfort with it. It sounded so smarmy. The comments here have helped me figure it out. Basically, it’s another anti-Semitic rant, on the same hate level as Mel Gibson’s. He is now dead to me.

  40. db says:

I don’t buy Gary’s apology for one minute — unfortuntely, if anything, the ADL responded exactly the way he wanted so he could spout off some more hateful vitriol to his bigot audience of Rush Limbaugh fans.

    • starfan says:

His manager is Douglas Urbanski, a regular fill in for Rush Limbaugh so not surprised.

      • db says:

Ahhh, interesting! He sounds like the sort who only watches/reads whatever confirms his prejudices

  41. Sam says:

It reads to me like sarcasm rather than an attempt to keep working in the town.

Gary wrote an apology to the ADL (and only to the ADL) because Abe Foxman issued a press release comparing his statement that “the Jews run Hollywood” to the worst 19th century anti-Semitism.

  42. peggy says:

I’m not Jewish or Gay or Black, but I’m offended and want an apology! I’m looking at him in a new light.

On one hand I appreciate seeing the “truth” behind these actors that I admire, on the other hand, I don’t wanna know. It’s so disappointing!!

  43. Triple Cardinal says:

“I look at every aspect of our culture and wonder what will make it better.”

“It’s like the old saying about mediocrity: the mediocre are always at their best. They never let you down.”

“What irritates me more is when other people aren’t respectful. There’s a lot of nonsense behavior, especially in places like Hollywood. The money, the power, they create little monsters.”

“That’s what gets me. It’s just the sheer hypocrisy of everyone.”

    • starfan says:

“Oh, F-K THE POPE! You have to edit and cut half of what I’ve said, because it’s going to make me sound like a bigot.”

”WE’VE ALL SAID THOSE THINGS. But it’s not like I’m a fascist or a racist. THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THAT IN MY HISTORY”

“The policeman who arrested Mel has never used the word n***** or that f***ing Jew?”

“Alec calling someone an F-A-G in the street while he’s pissed off coming out of his building because they won’t leave him alone. I DON’T BLAME HIM.”

“Mel Gibson is in a town that’s run by Jews and he said the wrong thing because he’s actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him – and doesn’t need to feed him anymore because he’s got enough dough.”

      “If I called Nancy Pelosi a c*** — and I’ll go one better, a f***ing useless c**— I can’t really say that.”

“If you didn’t vote for 12 Years a Slave you were a racist.”

“Take a f***ing joke. Get over it.”

      • lunchcoma says:

Definitely the quotes of a man who understands the meaning of “respectful.”

        Sigh.

  44. Jayna says:

I don’t want him to apologize because he doesn’t mean it. It means nothing. Own it, Gary, if nothing else. If you are so secure in what you said, why are you caving for your career?

  45. lunchcoma says:

Repulsive. This sarcastic, insincere apology mentioning only some of the horrible things he said would be worse than just saying nothing.

    • Random Person #1580 says:

I totally agree. Why is it that any form of sarcastic humour gets praised today? Saying all those terrible things and then writing this joke of an apology makes him look no better than a 16 year old internet troll, except with better vocabulary.

I’d much rather he be more of a man about it and just say he regrets nothing, instead of treating the subject like it was some dumb joke and people are just overreacting. I find this mockery of an apology far worse than everything he said. It just shows how little he cares about what the offended people feel.

  46. dana says:

Pl’s note that Anti-Defamation League has a budget of 30 million $ so they can do you damage if they want.
I am so tired of this word “antisemitic” used so incorrectly- there are 13-14 of semitic people/groups in the world and they are not referring to them, they can say plain “jews haters”.
Gary is only an actor and people ask him opinions about stuff and he says what he wants to fart in that moment and anyway he and the ones who printed have to pay the price of their unfortunate expressions, actors are interview about stuff like they are geniuses or something and usually diarrea comes out.
Anyway- i am jewish and israeli and i have absolutely no problem with jewish haters-everybody is entitled to his opinions and their lifes will look like their opinions- like mel Gibson seems to u a happy person, even he has like half billion $??….no.

  47. Mark says:

He could have worded the Gibson thing better but overall he was correct and didn’t say anything wrong, just look at sites like these hyper-sensitive and hypocritical. look at the comments section on this site peo0ple get offended if someone says they don’t like cats.

Typical clickbaity posts, it’s so hacky thats why no one takes blogging seriously

    • Josefa says:

I’d agree with you if it weren’t because experience has thaught me that 98% of the time, when someone is calling someone else hypersensitive about something they said, it’s because they are totally unwilling to process the thought that maybe, JUST MAYBE, they did say something offensive.

  48. Lilacflowers says:

@An, actually, he only offered that lame apology to Jewish men. Jewish women got left out of his equation altogether.

  49. LouLou says:

That is the most sarcastic apology ever. And now he’s probably laughing at the people who didn’t get the sarcasm. I guess he’s kind of a mean person.
