Pippa Middleton gave her first-ever TV interview to Matt Lauer: epic or blah?

121418PCN_Pippa02

I watch the first few minutes of the Today Show every weekday morning, just to see what the big stories are, what news broke overnight and sometimes to get a lead on whatever I’m going to be writing about during the day. This morning, Matt Lauer was not in NYC – he had flown to London overnight to interview a mystery person, and he teased the hell out of the interview. Guess who it was? Pippa Middleton. Yeah. This is her first sit-down TV interview ever, and it follows her successful 3000-mile bike ride across America to raise awareness (and money) for charity. Here’s the preview Today released:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Matt Lauer embarrassed me as an American in that clip. Matt, Pippa is not royalty! You don’t have to get THAT excited about it. Her sister waity’d for nine years for the ring, but Pippa does not have a title and she keeps getting fired from jobs and failing as some kind of party-planning book-writer. Let’s take it down a notch. That being said, I’ll totally watch the interview next week. I really wanted Matt to STFU so Pippa could say more than two sentences. Anyway, do you think the Palace approved of this? Allegedly, Kate and the Queen conspired to shut down Pippa’s American book tour a few years ago. I really hope Pippa has broken the royal shackles of press-embargos.

Full Stop. Am I looking at James’ marshmallow bits right now?! 😱

  2. christina says:

I can’t even read this, I’m too busy staring at James’ balls

    • mimif says:

Lol I’m glad I’m not the only one. Where is the, um, part that goes along with the balls tho?

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

Frank and beans and all that.

    • Mina says:

It looks more like camel toe.

      • FLORC says:

That is the WORST thing about bike shorts. The padding makes it look like you have camel toe. It even looks that way hanging on a clothes line.
Hate to burst the fun bubble you guys are having, but it’s so padded we’re seeing just about nothing. It sure makes it comfy to ride a saddle for a looong time.

  3. Delta Juliet says:

I like that she just completed this 3000 mile ride to raise awareness and yet this is the first I am hearing of it. After it’s all over.

    • FLORC says:

It was publicized not long ago. And since it’s a team event it happens very fast. Round the clock cycling like a relay race. You pass off to the next member while you rest or have finished your section/miles.

    • M.A.F. says:

It was reported here when it was about to kick off then again after it was done.

  4. HH says:

While Pippa’s motives for charity work may nt be purely altruistic, homegirl at least puts in work. She always does pretty grueling athletic events. While some may doubt contribution or effort, her physique suggests she’s very serious about these endeavors.

  5. Sumodo1 says:

Raise awareness for what? Deez nutz! Sorry, I HAD to go there.

  6. Jacqueline says:

Anyone else think he looks like Tzar Nicolas II in spandex?

  7. Sharon Lea says:

I wonder what the British press will think. They were not too happy that Matt interviewed Harry & William before. They wanted to get those interviews. They have a point, why give these interviews to the American press instead? Granted, Pippa biked across America, but you’d think she and James would do the interviews together and at least do something with the BBC as well?

  8. Hannah says:

    Ugh, Lauer.

    • mystified says:

Don’t understand his success at all! Even when he interviews people he likes he seems condescending.

Pippa, for reasons that I’ll probably never really understand, I find truly fascinating.

  9. lassie says:

As an American, what types of feelings do I feel about James? I know that Pippa is the Jan Brady of the Middletons, but are we pro or anti James?

  10. Alexandra says:

Lay off the fake tan, Pippa! Girl looks soooo much older than her actual age. No one looks good orange. Also, Matt Lauer is a dimwit.

  11. The Original Mia says:

My first thought was that she is not that important enough to 1) tease about an interview and 2) to interview. Then I clicked the link and my mind blanked looking at this poser’s nuts. That is not the image I want seared into my brain this morning.

    • kibbles says:

LMAO. I agree Pippa is not important enough for any major American news anchor to fly across the ocean to get an exclusive interview with her. That being said, I get the feeling that Pippa will be a better speaker and have more personality than Kate. That’s just my guess.

      • FLORC says:

To be fair I think Kate would be a better speaker if she wasns’t trying to uphold her fake accent so much. To hear them both talk they sound like they’ve come from different regions.

  12. Mindy says:

Wow good for her with the bike ride! Amazing

    • FLORC says:

I road the East Coast Greenway this weekend and donate my own hard earned money to charity. Give me a medal! What.. No medal? Well, can i have some aloe for my sun burns? No? Well, that sounds about right.

      • ozmom says:

If you are going to whine about not getting medals and aloe you’re doing charity wrong.

      • FLORC says:

        Heh, No.
I meant to say I exercized in my free time AND donated to charity.I do participate in charity races, but I wasn’t saying I did this time.

And Pippa is doing charity wrong by that take. Would she have done this if it wasn”t going to be highly publiczed with a deal from Matt Lauer. She only seems to do these things when it puts her in the spotlight.

I have no motive for charity. That was pretty much my point.

  13. Talie says:

This is the first step for Pippa taking a TV position with Today as a British correspondent (she does the same with Vanity Fair) — it’s like an audition. I think she’ll fair better than Chelsea Clinton.

  14. A:) old prude says:

Why is she giving an interview? Does she think since her sister is a royal, she is also royalty or a public figure or a celebrity? God this woman is famous for even more stupid reasons then Kim Kardashians, at least she had her own sex tape. But I guess she and rest of the Midds are like Kim’s family, famous for being related to someone famous. After this interview I hope all the Middleton family apologists would stop saying oh they are not courting media or publicity, it’s not their fault that media doesn’t leave them alone or that they don’t want to be public figure etc etc etc. God William choose so badly not only in terms of wife but also in laws. I hope there is a big backlash in British media for this.

I do wonder what William thinks of his so called second family courting press attention this way. And yes this is embarrassing. I don’t get it at all why Americans get so excites re royals, it’s goes so much against there basic values of hard work, making your own way, everybody getting equal opportunity, no birth superiority and anti class system. It’s so bizzare.

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

USA used to have the ideology you said. Unfortunately not anymore.

As for William being embrassed? Please, he has no place to be.

    • wolfpup says:

Confession: I’m curious not only about the royals, but the people who let them be in such a position. It’s hard to wrap my mind around it, but it is sociologically fascinating.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

Can’t speak for all Americans but many of us find this stuff entertaining in a celebrity obsessed culture kind of way. Most Americans don’t pay attention to rf related affairs beyond the pomp/regality or the odd bit of scandal. That’s about it.

    • hmmm says:

Well, Pippa is true to Middleton type- an opportunist.

I don’t understand why anyone would want to hear what she has to say, especially Americans.

      • FLORC says:

        hmmm
If there’s 2 things Americans love it’s a train wreck and getting something for nothing. Pippa is famous from nothing she did to earn it. She’s just famous now because the press swept her up.
And Pippa is the sister of Kate (as we all know). Kate is in a position of becoming a trainwreck (as are the Middletons) at any moment.

Americans are watching mostly for these 2 reasons imo.

    • Talie says:

I don’t get this thinking that Royals need to “control” the Middletons. They can do whatever they want… her parents are entrepreneurs. It wouldn’t be offside for them to make money on social media or giving talks for money because that’s what every other successful entrepreneur on the planet does! They just have to deal with the hater British press riding them.

      • FLORC says:

        Talie
It can’t reflect poorly on the BRF. It’s 1 thing for a born royal to mess up. That is handled internally and protected. It’s another thing for an outside family to act foolish or engage in criminal behavior.
        Pippa Gun France
        Uncle Gary Drug Dealer
Closed books and unclear accounting on PP company.

And for a while it seemed like Pippa and Party Pieces were trying to get business off of the BRF. You can’t go around acting like they endorse something you’re selling. Which for a bit it seemed PP and Pippa were trying to do. They walked a fine line and eventually changed their behavior.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Nobody cares about the royal family in America. You are letting this site warp your perception of an entire country. To be honest, I didn’t realize that Canadians and Australians took the British Queen seriously or that there are quite a few European countries that still have royalty until I started reading this blog. Most people don’t think about this stuff, period.

    • mazzie says:

It’s such a classic – two sisters, one marries incredibly well (YMMV on this but go with me) and the other ends up cast as the ne’er do well.

      The Queen and Princess Margaret
      Jackie O and Lee R.
Caroline and Stephanie (Ok, this is stretching)

  15. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I couldn’t see the interview. Please tell me they didn’t talk about her behind. Again.

  16. Dany says:

why is only Pippa in the interview? Why not her brother and other team mates too? They all were on their bikes. Why is Pippa singled out?

    • RobN says:

Cause nobody tunes in to see the nobody British guy who rode his bike; they tune in to see the sister of the future queen.

  17. Elle Kaye says:

Why are there bullseyes on their naughty bits?!?! These shorts are a terrible design…unless you want people staring at your privates, then they are pure genius.

    • wow says:

It must be something that runs in the family. They love to flash and focus on their best “assets”. Kate with her multiple flashes, Pip with her butt and James with his balls. Makes me chuckle even more about that Harry diss that Carole supposedly said in that upcoming Penny Junor book. She has no room to talk.

Also, do you guys remember when James use to be HOT? It seems like that end after Kate’s wedding.

      • kibbles says:

LOL. I’m laughing at these comments. Seriously, we have seen more than we ever needed to see of the three Middleton siblings’ butts, boobs, and crotches. Looking at that top photo is hilarious. James always looked queer to me (in more ways than one) but now he just looks terrible.

    • RobN says:

They’re the perfect design if you’re riding a bike for hundreds of miles.

    • Wren33 says:

Riding long distance without them on a serious bike seat = bruising and blistering where you don’t want bleeding and blistering.

  18. Green_Eyes says:

I have a classmate. & family friend that cycled in that 3000 Mile event. We all cheered him on and are proud of him. I don’t get why Pippa is considered royalty… But nice that the event had exposure from her.

  19. Dirtnap says:

Is Matt overly enthusiastic because he thinks he has a chance wit dat booty? Just wondering. Maybe the more interesting question is: Would Pippa be up for it?

    • MinnFinn says:

Same thing crossed my mind about Matt’s enthusiasm. Matt would probably have a better chance with James. Speaking of which, I think James’s hair is filling in. He must have gotten some plugs.

  20. Izzy says:

I would call Matt Lauer a brainless hairdo… but for that he’d need hair.

  21. bettyrose says:

Pippa’s nephew is the future king of England. Neither of them has done anything (yet) to earn their place in history but still have more claim to historical relevance than the Kardashians.

  22. MinnFinn says:

James has an extra long torso just like his mom and sisters. And yeah, I noticed his unit too.

I hope Lauer asked Pippa about the photo of her in a purple bra dancing with brother James who was wearing only boxers. Probably not.
    http://www.tntmagazine.com/news/pippa-middleton-naked-nearly-in-purple-bra

Apart from the dance photo, those two make me cringe twice. First for their famewhoring. Pippa a 2nd time because she’s riding her sisters coattails instead of getting a proper job. She’s got a uni degree and connections with the 1% so there’s no excuse for her not having a full-time career.

And James! He’s a famewhore once removed. He’s trying to cash in on Pippa’s fame.

    • justme says:

Just for the record, the guy dancing with Pippa in that purple bra picture is not James. He is a university friend. He appears in other pictures that people found on her friends’ facebook accounts before they all upped their security.

  23. booboobird says:

wtf signet rings. bloody aristo wannabes. no matter the upholstered crotch as long as the pinky ring is in place. look at meeee

    • MinnFinn says:

Brits help me out. P & James’ signet rings to this American seem off-putting and tone deaf. I have to believe that the ring is laughable to both aristos and middle class Brits. Plus I guess tone deaf runs in the family because P & J don’t seem to get that about the rings just like Kate is tone deaf in so many of her sartorial decisions.

      • LAK says:

We all laugh at the signet rings, not because they are tone deaf, but because they signal what wannabes [sp?] these people are.

They are fooling no one with those rings.

    • The Original Mia says:

I can’t believe they are still wearing those rings. Is there no self-awareness of how dumb they look wearing rings that scream…my sister married a prince and we came along for the ride!

    • I always make sure I have my signet ring on before exercising. Always. Especially on the tennis court. It doesn’t get in the way at all and is really comfortable, in that special douchebaggy sort of way…

  24. Racer says:

I’m really shocked. I was expecting her to have the same accent as Kate! Has Kate been faking her posh, nasal voice all this time?!

    • Liberty says:

Racer: yes! Kate has had lessons, lessons, lessons. You can hear the slips in her earliest speeches at little events. LAK and others can speak more fully about this.

      • LAK says:

        It’s all MY FAIR LADY!!!!

      • booboobird says:

        rain in spain??? LOL

      • LAK says:

on the plain? on the plane?

      • FLORC says:

Plains! I remember that! Didn’t connect it was My Fair Lady.

        Racer
I said in another post, but it fits here…
Kate may have had a harder time speaking in public because she struggles to maintain a false accent. Each word needs a pause.
Meanwhile Pippa in her true accent comes off more endearing.

And Kate’s accent is so posh it’s more on point than her husbands accent. And he’s a royal aristo!

The accent to the signet rings just seems so silly to me.

  25. greta says:

Does the palace approve???!! Who cares? They don’t own her, she’s a private citizen and should be able to do as she pleases (provided no laws are broken, LOL!).

  26. wendi says:

Wonder why she gave the unprecedented “exclusive” to Today, anyone???? Surely this is a slap in the face to the British press since it is the first time she’s done an interview?

    • LAK says:

There seems to be a preferance for courting the Americans on the part of the young royals. i guess some clever clogs decided that’s where there future lies.

  27. grace says:

Are all the American morning shows like this? People exaggerating their enthusiasm and glee. They’re so… ugh, FAKE! I cringed hearing that guy calling Lauer: poor baby. Are these people really journalists?

    • RobN says:

Morning shows are horrible. Lots of fake excitement. But no, they are not real journalists; they are morning hosts who read what is handed to them and have the ability to fake caring about what celebrities are doing and whether some woman in Nebraska is turning 100.

    • Hazel says:

Ah, British morning shows are just as silly!

  28. mata says:

I don’t get why she’s a thing. Her sister married well. That’s it. It’s like a classier version of the Kardashians building an empire off Kim’s sex tape.

  29. GirlyGIrl says:

    Matt Lauer interviews Pippa.

Just checking, NBC wants MORE people to watch TV not less, right?

the television equivalent of velveeta on wonder bread.

  30. justme says:

She and James are also going to be involved in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim race (6.5 km) on July 20. They are raising money for the same two charities at that time. So she can be interviewed about the bicycle race and also put a plug in for the swim. That can increase “awareness” and (I’m sure they hope) raise more money for the charities.

  31. Aurelia says:

Wonder if waity even has the decency to be embarrassed by the fact her sister does more for random charities than she herself does!

Old Prude, too much, “At least Kim Kardashian had her OWN sex tape” snort, snort, I’m dying.

  32. DanaG says:

I’m going to go out on a limb and say her interview will probably be as interesting as watching paint dry. She did it for the charity so anything private she won’t be allowed to talk about if he is expecting some sort of scoop it isn’t going to happen.

  33. Suze says:

Pippa comes off much better than Lauer.

  34. Kath says:

God, I am so over these horrible hipster beards on 20-something yr old men. HOW can they not know how ridiculous it looks?

  35. Laura says:

Although I am sure Pippa Middleton is a nice person, I’m not really sure why she is the focus of so much attention. She is simply the younger sister of a woman who married the heir to the heir of the British throne. She has not done anything that would have ordinarily garnered this much attention had she not been related to the royal family.
