Chris Martin: ‘I was vegetarian for a long time but for various reasons I changed’

FFN_Martin_Chris_FFUK_070114_51466598

Here are some photos of Chris Martin a few days ago in London. He’s still traveling the world, promoting Coldplay’s new album (which many critics say is not all that great). I don’t know what’s happening with Chris’s love life at this point. I suspect that he and Gwyneth Paltrow are in the process of consciously re-coupling, although he doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make anything official. I think he really wanted Alexa Chung to be his new girlfriend, and maybe she balked? They were seen together a few times, and they were mysteriously in the same cities at the same time again and again… but whatever it was, maybe it petered out? Or maybe they’re just really good at going undercover? Or maybe Chris wants his cake and to eat it too? And by cake, I mean bacon. Chris gave a radio interview this week where he discussed how he eats meat these days and he’s no longer a vegetarian. Huh.

He was once named one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians. However it is an accolade that is no longer true for Coldplay’s Chris Martin. He revealed yesterday that having ‘consciously uncoupled’ from his marriage to Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow he has also relinquished the vegetarian lifestyle that came with it and is now once again a carnivore.

The 37 year-old British star let slip about his change in diet during an interview with Steve Wright on Radio 2 yesterday.

‘I am not really vegetarian. I eat meat. I was vegetarian for a long time but for various reasons I changed. My daughter [Apple, 10] has been a vegetarian since she was born. I keep getting tempted to go back but I don’t eat too much meat.’

Warming to his theme he then bizarrely said: ‘The honest answer why I changed is because I thought you can only eat something that you should be able to kill. I don’t why I am talking about this. I have got to stop as there will be some sort of headline. I mean ‘Could you kill a fish?’ I would not like it but I probably could eat the fish…or a giraffe… I have been called the world’s sexiest vegetarian. I don’t think I am the world’s sexiest singer. I think I came about 17th.’

Miss Paltrow’s enthusiasm for following a vegetarian diet is well-documented and she has written a cookbook and blogged about the health benefits of following a diet rich in plants and seeds.

[From The Daily Mail]

I don’t even know if Gwyneth considers herself a vegetarian anymore. I think that was just a phase, because didn’t her first cookbook include some meaty recipes? I seem to remember something about sausages? No, Gwyneth’s thing isn’t “vegetarian/vegan/microbiotic” anymore – she’s just obsessed with limiting her food overall. I still don’t know what Chris is talking about though. He stopped being a vegetarian because he wanted giraffe meat?! Something like that. And why is Apple a vegetarian… but Moses is not? Does Moses get undercover bacon from his dad?

They are both idiots. And i’m a vegetarian.

    • mayamae says:

I came here to say the exact same thing. Has he always sounded so stupid? And I’m not really a vegetarian implies that, yeah he kind of is.

I saw Kellie Pickler on The Chew yesterday and found out she’s been a vegetarian for maybe five years now. I remember thinking when she was on DWTS, that she was so thin yet very strong. Anyway, The Chew was all about teasing the vegetarian and telling her what she’s missing, and I am so tired of that. I don’t go around educating every meat eater about the animal abuse they’re complicit in, yet people are compelled to treat me like I’m doing something wrong.

      • Jac says:

Complicit in animal abuse…I just eye rolled myself right off my chair.

      • Pookie says:

Hey Jac. Follow factory farmed newborn baby animals from their births to their deaths…that`s something to roll your eyes at. You only see the nicely packaged end product in the stores. Go to a slaughterhouse and see where your meat comes from and tell me that there`s zero animal abuse involved.

      • Mayamae says:

Glad to provide your entertainment JAC. That’s exactly why I don’t say anything to meat eaters. Even when they’re (in their minds) teasing me about killing and eating Bambie’s mother.

So go ahead and eye roll, I’ve certainly heard worse. Hopefully laughing at someone’s ethical beliefs makes your day.

If you have time, watch the documentary Death on a Factory Farm, and let me know if your opinion has changed.

      • Jac says:

Have been to plenty of slaughterhouses and studied their methods tirelessly, Pookie, as I am a veterinarian and animal welfare is my job. I think the videos you’re referencing are sensational. There is abuse out there, to be sure, but it’s not mainstream. For the most part slaughter is a necessary deed carried out by educated people in an efficient manner as their livelihood depends on it.
I could guilt trip vegetarians for being complicit in our deforestation, but I know better.

      • Tara says:

So well said Mayamae. You are my hero for the day. I agree both of them are idiotic in their own way. For some reason Chris is the one that pings my “douchebag, get off my porch” bell… As soon as I see him.

      • Pookie says:

Funny Jac, much of the deforestation worldwide is done for beef production. Just because you’re a vet that has “studied it tirelessly” doesn’t make it any less cruel. Perhaps you’ve become desensitized to animal suffering. And really, how “educated” are the people doing the slaughter. Slaughter 101? They, without a doubt, must be desensitized to animal suffering or they couldn’t kill day in and day out for hours.

      • Mmhmm says:

Eh it goes both ways. I’m not a vegetarian, but have vegetarian friends and I also don’t like the amount of teasing they get. At the same time, I ENJOY meat and I believe some animals are meant to be eaten. Sounds harsh, but I really do think it’s part of the circle of life and that creation has given us neat to enjoy. If you believe that not to be true, then I’m totally ok with that, you’re being healthy and sticking to your beliefs and I think that’s great.

      • jaye says:

I just started with vegetarian diet because I just got put off with the tainted beef incident a few months back. Also I watched an episode of Bizarre Food w/Andrew Zimmern and watched him kill and skin a frog that appeared to still be alive and kill and field dress a deer and I was just horried by it. I’ve heard horrible stories about commercial farms and the deplorable treatment of the animals. I guess I am a vegetarian for ethical reasons, but I don’t begrudge anyone their right to eat meat. Most of the people around me are supportive although they sometimes still offer me meat as if the right dish will make me change my mind.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

Thanks Jac for your intelligent replies. I agree!

    • lisa says:

vegetables leading to deforestation is like duggar science

  2. Lori says:

He’s still not interesting bacon or no.

  3. Size Does Matter says:

Let me translate. “Hey, everyone, it is Gwyneth with the food issues, not me,” says the self appointed World’s sexiest former vegetarian.

    • Liberty says:

      +1

    • Hannah says:

He wasn’t self-appointed, it was a title bestowed upon him by PETA. Which kinda makes it worse.

      • Size Does Matter says:

Interesting. I wonder who the competition was. I don’t dislike him, but he strikes me as the type of guy with a pretty healthy ego without the stroking from PETA.

    • Mmhmm says:

Lol true, but I will always live Cheis since I saw Coldplay live once. Talk about a great show, and they could play instruments and sing. He sings incredible. Anyway, concerning their new album, I was dissapointed with it but it is still much better than all of the auto tuned/overproduced crap that gets churced out. For some reason, it’s become a fad to slam decent albums only because they didn’t live up to their previous albums or unrealistic expectations.

  4. paola says:

AKA ‘got rid of that bitch so I can stop pretending I don’t like meat’.
    They really deserve each other.

  5. Jac says:

    17th?…unlikely, bro.

  6. Abbott says:

According to Lainey’s Smut Soiree (god help me, this is the 2nd time I’ve referenced this today) Martin went back to GOOP in a last ditch effort to make it work. When it didn’t and they announced their Pegasus anointed separation (or whatever), Chung didn’t take him back.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

Hahahahaha! Pegasus anointed! I love that.

    • littlestar says:

I’m enjoying reading the dirt you have from the annual Smut Soiree! I would love to make it there one of these years. While I think Lainey’s head has gotten pretty big with her success, her blinds are the only ones I trust to be true.

  7. Incredulous says:

Hello my name is Chris Martin and after I consciously un-coupled from Gwyneth I went on a taco fries bender which I ate with a battered sausage.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

      HAHAHAHAHAHA!

    • Faye says:

Just curious because although I’m a very healthy eater, my occasional treat foods are tacos and fries – is “taco fries” a real thing? A combined food, that is? Or did you just include them together? (am hungry, in case you couldn’t tell :).

    • DailyNightly says:

Gwynnie battered his sausage? Was it because of Alexa?

  8. maybeiamcrazy says:

Sexiest vegetarian? 17th sexiest singer? God, who made those lists?! They always get them wrong.

  9. Cheryl says:

I’m baffled by the giraffe reference. I’ve never come across this in the ethics of meat eating/ omnivore’s dilemma talk that occasionally happens around me. What is going on in his head? Is there a freezer full of giraffe meat in his fridge that he needs to rationalize? Is this a common grocery store item or???? Very confusing…

    • Linn says:

Maybe it’s a comment about the giraffe who got publicy killed (and fed to other animals) in a zoo in copenhagen.

There was quite an outrage about it, partly from people who happily eat other more common types of meat.

  10. Rhiley says:

I can never follow his interviews. He strikes me as someone who probably clams up a bit when he is giving interviews, and he can probably see in his head what he wants to say but having his mouth form the right words under the pressure of another person staring at him, waiting on an answer, causes his palms to sweat and his thoughts to spin so that his mouth cannot properly articulate what it is brain wants to say. BTW, this is the first Coldplay album I haven’t purchased. The one song about Alexa Chung is so boring and bad I just can’t bring myself to listen to a whole album of that mess.

  11. Thinker says:

    Pseudo-Intellectual.

In fact, this man is an idiot. If he was a vegetarian for ethical, environmental, or health reasons he would understand the difference between giraffe meat and a fish. Clearly, he doesn’t read much except People Magazine, which he demonstrates by quoting all the statistics on his sex appeal. He’s quite concerned with presenting himself as sexy and desirable, when the real hard truth is he’s past his prime both musically and in terms of sexual attractiveness.

Chris, you are no Mick Jagger. Your publicist may get you on some “hot” lists, but nobody cares. You aren’t a catch, I’d rather kiss a fish… Or a giraffe.

  12. Kiddo says:

Various reasons = conscious uncoupling from the kumquat. You’re not even number 17 in my book on the sexiest singer, but hey, I guess you picked up the art of the self congratulatory pat on the back from the misses. Or maybe you were always that way.

  13. serena says:

I don’t think it’s healty for a child to be a vegetarian, especially (in Apple’s case) since she was born.

    • Aussie girl says:

That comment made me think to. Please educate me if I’m wrong

    • Bread and Circuses says:

Vegetarian since birth is probably fine, but vegan since birth is a problem, since humans need a source of B12 and will suffer nerve damage if we don’t get any.

Luckily the body recycles its B12 supply, so if you’ve ever eaten meat or meat byproducts (like milk and eggs) in your life, then you’re good for something like 15 years without any new B12. (Caveat: I am pulling this trivia from the dusty recesses of my brain and may be wrong about some or all of it.)

So if Apple is vegetarian, but still eats milk and eggs, then she’s probably fine. Meat is one of the easiest-to-digest, best protein sources for our body, but it’s entirely possible to raise a child in good health on a vegetarian diet. Portions of India’s population have been proving that for centuries.

    • M.A.F. says:

If it is done right, it could be a very health diet. I question those who raise them right out of the gate as a vegan though. But it’s up to the parents I guess. I’m a vegetarian (although I guess you would call me a pesco-vegetarian since I do eat fish from time to time) but I wouldn’t raise my child to be one. It was a choice I made as an adult but it’s not to say I wouldn’t throw some tofu into their diet every now and then.

    • nikitab says:

Vegetarian diets are very healthful for children of all ages, but vegan is where the problems begin…It can be done, but it requires acute attention and planning.

      • Hanna says:

I’m vegan myself and have vegan friends with kids. A few of them have been vegan since in utero and they’re the healthiest kids. They’ve never been sick yet and the oldest kid I know starts high school in the fall. It’s safe and totally fine as long as the parents are educated on basic nutrition– vegan kids turn out to be just as strong and they get there without the allergies and colds. You can get B12 from fortified soymilk, nutritional yeast or supplements. I wish ppl would stop freaking about B12 — it’s not difficult to get. It’s also well-known that omnivores more often suffer from nutritional deficiency than vegans *because* omnivores assume they’re getting everything they need because they consume animal products.

Also remember, there are many animals who are vegetarian-vegans and they’re just fine. The rhino and hippopotamus are some vegans in the animal kingdom.

        Here’s a list of them: http://www.veggieboards.com/forum/11-vegetarian-support-forum/54726-list-vegetarian-vegan-animals.html

      • Bridget says:

@Hanna: being vegan has absolutely nothing to do with how healthy a child is. Vegan, vegetarian, omnivore: they all get sick, because being exposed to germs is how one builds their immune system in the first place. In fact, there’s more of a correlation between immune system and breast feeding than there is for vegetarian/veganism.

  14. kibbles says:

I watched that pretentious cooking series with Paltrow traveling Spain with chef Mario Batali. That was back in 2008 and she ate meat on the trip. I think she probably limits the amount of red meat she eats but she does eat meat and seafood, so she is not a vegetarian. It surprises me that Apple is a vegetarian. Boy, is that girl going to have major issues with food and body image with a mom like Paltrow.

  15. ashley says:

I love ghost stories,”o” is just perfection. Bands grow and change,it is what it is. I’ll continue to buy their album,as long as they release it. Poor chris must have been tired of hiding while eating his ham and cheese sandwich.

    • whatsmyname? says:

Ha, I’m listening to O right now I love it. I havn’t listened to the whole album yet, what other songs do you like? If you don’t mind me asking..

  16. Ms. Lady says:

I just come here to say as a meat eater with friends who are vegan and vegetarian, that this dude is full of bullshit. That is all.

  17. SpookySpooks says:

I like Chris, He always comes off funny and self-deprecating in interviews, but very nervous. And I like Goop. And Alexa for that matter.

    • isabelle says:

Hooray – someone who is not out to slander Goop & co. Her cookery books are wonderful and she’s an example of a hard-working woman who is put down by a lot of jealous ladies out there. When men work hard it’s seen as a good thing – when a woman puts herself out there, she’s a bitch.

  18. Silver says:

I don’t believe GP was ever a vegetarian; she’s always had chicken or fish in some of her recipes. If she was vegan it was probably only for a few weeks during a fast.
You can get B12 from nutritional yeast and (i believe) some sea vege. You have to be ocd about your diet but healthful veganism is possible.
Generally I think GP’s lifestyle seems EXHAUSTING. Personally I do a bit of intermittent fasting, stay away from animal products, and focus on common superfoods such as chia, greens, and quinoa. Keep it simple otherwise it’s going to get boring. As for Chris Martin, he travel A LOT so I can see how it’s easy to fall off esp if you’re going to meat-heavy places like Brazil or Germany for a tour. But then he’s a gazillionaire so I think he probably has a personal chef with him on tour.

  19. anne says:

Eat as you choose folks but be healthy. Thankfully Chris is his own man now after years of suffering under the Paltrow regime. He and the kids are and will be fine! Gwyneth REALLY messed up and her futile attempts to get him back (for her image) get his money, slant the press are so obvious. Chris and kids happier by the day and want this over with! Yay for finally getting out Chris – we’ve been waiting, now go be happy! And all you guys out there too (least as much as we can anyway right?)

    • isabelle says:

‘Get his money’ – excuse me, do you know how independently rich she is? She’s not after his money by a long shot.

  20. isabelle says:

This is ridiculous. In It’s All Good, Moses is pictured eating a slice of duck bacon. These folks were never vegetarians – according to Goop they just don’t eat red meat.
