Shailene Woodley in Peter Pilotto at the Teen Choice Awards: cool or confusing?

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley stepped out for the Teen Choice Awards last night to scoop up two surfboards. She wore a Peter Pilotto dress that was a visual assault on my eyeballs. Shailene’s been wearing complicated, busy fabrics lately, and she continues the trend. Last night’s selection featured diagonal stripes, a feathery print on the bodice, a contrast skirt, and two-toned sleeves. This dress is a mess. Something nice: Shailene doesn’t care about trends. She also kept her hair very simple and slicked back. The red Kurt Geiger pumps were an acceptable shoe choice.

Shailene won the Choice Movie Actress award for Divergent and the 2014 Movie Drama award for Fault in Our Stars. While accepting the award for Divergent Shailene said, “the truest form of bravery and courage is to wake up every day and be ourselves.” During the Movie drama speech she talked about teenagers with cancer. She said that “nothing is fair” in regards to who gets sick and that “all we have is moments.” Shailene posed with Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff in the awards room. These dudes didn’t bother to get dressed up at all.

Zendaya gets my vote for best dressed. Not necessarily because I like what she wore, but she wore these two ensembles with confidence. Is that a wig? It must be. Zendaya won the Candies style icon award, so she went to town. Her red carpet outfit was a Material Girl dress. Z’s the current face of the label, and she wore modified version of the dress Madonna wore in her video. The result was a cute pink halter number that Z accessorized with a Swarovski clutch and jewels plus pink Louboutins.

Zendaya’s second look was an oversized, zebra-print Emanual Ungaro shirt with Nicholas Kirkwood boots. This outfit would have looked hideous on almost anyone else, but Z owns it.

Selena Gomez chose this moment to go sophisticated in a Saint Laurent pantsuit. This is a bizarre choice for the TCAs where Selena usually wears a flouncy dress with a mullet. Selena looks beautiful but boring here. She won the Ultimate Choice Award and dedicated the award to her mother. Selena said, “amidst all the stuff that we deal with, you remind me of what’s important, and that’s giving and loving and caring about each other.” (Note: Selena recently fired her parents as managers in April.)

Victoria Justice wore a white lace dress by Rebecca Minkoff. My first reaction to this dress was “crochet fug,” but the doily looks prettier with every passing second. It isn’t that bad. Victoria found a way to get away with a disguised minidress at a teen show.

Looks like Shailene’s dress was supposed to be a crop top but once she saw the crop top-calypse on the carpet she tied a bathrob belt around her waste. Or it could be a Hindu wax plant.

  2. Ag says:

    jarring.

  3. Gina says:

Ok, not a popular opinion i’m sure, but I love Shailene’s dress. I love the cut of the skirt and the colours, I’d only get rid of the sleeves as it’s a bit too much material.

    • Lori says:

      I like it too.

    • layla says:

Me, Me! I like it too.

And I also think Selena looks great. It’s a weird Monday morning to be sure. đŸ˜‰

    • kri says:

The cut of the dress on Sunny D Vag is amazing, but the patterns are giving me a migraine. Gomez looks sober, in more ways than one here-nice change.

    • JennySerenity says:

I like it, too! Although I have never, ever understood Shailene’s appeal. I think Zendaya is adorable, although that zebra print thing, ouch. But she looks gorgeous in the pink dress, wish I hadn’t peaked age-wise to the point where I could acceptably wear that. Cute, cute! The rest of the lineup- meh.

  4. QQ says:

For such a cute kid this Zendaya girl is A 5-6 on the Amanda Peet/Maggie Gyllenhall WTF is she wearing scale ..like, consistently…and here too its all bad everything.. Dress #1 looks like a fancy 80s cat interpretation and the second thing is just…UGH

I refuse to discuss anyone else

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree. She’s adorable, but hate both outfits, and I can’t see the same person wearing both. We all have more than one side of our personality to express with fashion, but these two are only consistent in their fugliness.

    • Pri says:

I happen to think that she’s like the newer generation’s Rihanna. I don’t know how far I’m right, maybe not all, BUT I’m thinking if she can pull off that black and white Zebra print shirt/coat with those long boots with the confidence that she shows then maybe she can be a fashion girl after all. Besides, she has the body and face to pull off most clothes. Though, only time will tell…

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Shailene’s dress is bizarre, but it flatters her body. I like that her hair is uncomplicated. Idk, I think she looks nice?

    • KIddo says:

It seems just a little too mature for her? I think I would like it better with a different pattern at the top. But it is a flattering cut.

Zendaya looks gorgeous. Not my favorite dress, but she pulls off both looks because of her figure.

  6. Guest2 says:

I went to see ” The Fault in Our Stars” back in July with friends. My two friends ABSOLUTELY loved it and…I hated it. I think she’s talented but this movie was sooooo boring. I wanted to walk out after 20 minutes.

    • Jules says:

@Guest2: I hated TFIOS as well…I stand by my belief that Woodley is a talented actress but I wasn’t blown away by her performance. I have yet to be impressed with Woodley…and the film was manipulative.

Anyway, as far as the dress Woodley is wearing is concerned….ugh.

    • Josefa says:

I thought TFIOS was an “objectively good” film. As in, I didn’t actually find any major flaws in it, but I didn’t like it for not liking stories like that in general. And I think Shailene, annoying as she may be, really is talented. She needs more time to mature as an actress, but I see the natural talent there.

  7. PreciousRobicheaux says:

    Zendaya is a knockout. Wow!

  8. OriginallyBlue says:

Zendaya looks fab. I don’t like the hair but I lile her outfits, especially the pink one. I also like Selena’s outfit.

  9. Mischa Jane says:

I don’t like all of these harsh patterns and geometric shapes on Shailene. She just doesn’t look comfortable or like herself. She has such a soft and pretty face and is very natural looking, her red-carpet looks just don’t jive with those things.

  10. Josefa says:

In defense of Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff – I don’t think I would’ve bothered with dressing up more than that for an awards show like this, either.

I like the concept of the dress, but it’s not something that would work on Shailene in particular. She is too average looking. The dress is wearing her instead of the other way round.

  11. Leaflet says:

I like Shailene’s dress. The design is flamboyant, yet the hills tranquilize the appeal of the busy patterns, which makes the over all appeal pleasing to my eyes. I also love the dark blue on the sides of her dress that acts as a “slimming effect” of sorts to her torso. I also love both of Zendaya’s looks. Love the flamingo pink dress and bushy bob. It complements her face well. She looks so couture there. Also love the zebra print dress and hills in the way that it appears that she is channeling Lisa Bonet from the 80’s.

  12. Tiffany :) says:

I think Shailene’s dress is ok. I like a clash of patterns and textures, but I feel like the sleeves are too much. I see where they were going, but it is a bit heavy handed.

I think Zendaya is wearing those clothes as best they could be worn, but the pink dress looks really cheaply made to me. The fabric looks subpar.

  13. Caz says:

Yes to Shailene, Zendaya’s pink dress and Selena’s outfits. For Teen awards nights…wacky is Ok. Victoria is stunning…I want to hack off the metres of doily below the minidress though.
