‘Today’ anchor Savannah Guthrie welcomes daughter Vale Guthrie Feldman

If you’re anything like me, you can’t stop yourself from watching the Today Show for a few minutes in the morning. I know I should be watching Good Morning America. But I got into the habit long ago of watching Today and now I’m stuck. So, I’ve been following the ongoing pregnancy saga of Ann Curry’s replacement anchor, Savannah Guthrie. Savannah seems nice (nicer than Matt Lauer) and she only went on maternity leave a few days ago. And she gave birth quickly, it seems (I kind of think it was a scheduled C-section). Savannah welcomed baby girl…Vale Guthrie Feldman.

Today is looking bright for Savannah Guthrie: she’s a mom! The morning show cohost and her husband Michael Feldman welcomed their first child — a girl! — early Wednesday, Aug. 13. Daughter Vale Guthrie Feldman weighed in at 8 lbs., 5 oz. and measured 19.5 inches long.

Her baby girl “has blue eyes, a little bit of blondish hair and the chubbiest cheeks you’ve ever seen,” Guthrie, who will be calling in to the show on Friday, told friends of the program. “Mike and I are so overcome with happiness, gratitude and joy.”

Guthrie, 42, began her leave from the show Monday, where she was sent off in style with gifts from her colleagues.

“It has been so much fun,” Guthrie joked of her nationally broadcasted pregnancy. “It’s been so surreal to go through this on TV.”

Well, congrats. Let’s hope this baby doesn’t end up looking like Matt Lauer. Anyway, thoughts on the name? Vale is probably a family name, I would think. I mean, do people go through a baby-name book and think, “YES, Vale is it.” But this baby’s full name sounds like quarry. The Vale Guthrie Feldman quarry.

    I like the name “Vale.”

    • Sammy says:

How do you pronounce it? Like Yale with a V

      • Abbott says:

That’s how I’m mentally pronouncing it. Although if you went with Old Valyria it’d be something like “ValeBalerionVhagar” Targaryen.

    • QQ says:

Me Too! When I watched this am I kept telling my bf that it was EXCELLENT! but then I Love girls with Boyish/androgynous names

    • Kate2 says:

Yes, thats how you pronounce it. I like it alot. Different but not weird. Not weird for me anyway. I like it alot.

All I could think this morning is that she left JUST in time…

What a cute baby too, she looks just like her mom.

  2. Christin says:

Very pretty newborn. Glad they both seem to be doing well.

  3. bella says:

    awwwww
    Beautiful baby!
    Congrats.
Vale does sound like it must be a family name.
And doesn’t Savannah look SUPER young in the after birth pic without makeup?
She is youthful looking otherwise but even more so sans makeup…

  4. Observer says:

    How do you pronounce it?

  5. Annika says:

    Wow what a gorgeous baby!

  6. Jaderu says:

That baby looks like an angel singing on a Christmas card. Congrats!!

  7. Blythe says:

Vale sounds like a brand name vegetation killer.

  8. jenn says:

    that’s a c-section baby for sure

    • MollyB says:

Yep. World of difference in how my c-section baby looked compared to my cone-headed first born.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Was just about to say the same thing – beautiful, little, unsquished face.

      • bella says:

        gotta say…
this baby is a good size so not necessarily true that it had to be a c-section.
both of my babies were not c-sections and because they were both well over 8 lbs. they had beautiful, round cherube faces and beautiful heads….
        no squish.
so baby vale may not have been born with a c-section.

      • notsoanonymous says:

I’d guess this was a c-section baby too, but for reference, my poor c-section girl came out bruised as all hell! Long labor before an emergency section will make a kid look a little worse for the wear. Probably a scheduled 🙂

    • HappyMom says:

You never know. My first had the same look-in fact the nurses commented on how pretty she was and how she looked like a c-section baby!

  9. Birdie says:

    Wale.

  10. kcarp says:

Probably a C-Section, she isn’t a spring chicken, her timing of taking off work, the nice little look.

I had a c-section I went in at 2 she was born at 2:30 not 1 labor pain. I do not know why people have trouble with them, I was at grocery store alone the day after I came home. I was fine.

A real after picture. She looks great glad she didn’t have hair and make up, that is really just obnoxious.

    • notsoanonymous says:

People have issues because everyone is different – and I think if you weren’t in labor for a long time beforehand, that makes a HUGE difference.

      • ctkat1 says:

Definitely- recovery from a scheduled C-section can be really different than recovery from a long unsuccessful labor followed by an emergency C-section.

    • metallicwow says:

C sections happen for all sorts of reasons, not just scheduled appointments, and everyone’s body reacts differently to what is essentially major surgery. You should consider yourself really lucky.

I stopped watching the first half hour of the Today Show when all the crazy Ann stuff happened, and to keep myself from falling back into watching it I started leaving for work a half hour earlier so that I am at my desk no later than 7:15 am. So I didn’t know SG was pregnant, but would like to say, kuddos for her posting a picture sans makeup. She appears much more likable, and less boring, and fake, here. Plus, the child is darned beautiful too. About the name, it sounds like a foundation. “PBS is a proud donor to the Vale Gutherie Feldman Foundation.”

I hate to start my day with the TV on, so I never watch morning shows. They depress me for some reason.

  13. holly hobby says:

Nope don’t care for the name. Maybe she should have named it Vail like in Vail Colorado. Let’s go skiing in Vale.

Not a Today show fan. I think Savannah is annoying too.

  14. Amanda says:

    Ugly name, adorable baby.

  15. Lori says:

If not a c-section why is daddy in scrubs???
