Justin Theroux & Jennifer Aniston did the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: cute?

wenn21485466

A few days ago, Justin Theroux finally got around to accepting his ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from Jason Bateman and some other people. Justin’s friend Jimmy Kimmel posted the video which is pretty standard as far as the ice bucket challenges go. The only thing that worried me was that poor fluffy puppy who was investigating Justin’s boots just a second before the water was dumped. Poor puppy. The puppy took the Ice Bucket Challenge too. The puppy should get to nominate Bo and Sunny Obama.

I’m surprised his guyliner and inky black hair dye didn’t run.

So, Justin nominated his lady, Jennifer Aniston, amongst others. I didn’t really think Jen would do it, but she did. And she did it indoors, in what looks like her (or someone else’s) living room? Let me watch that again… that’s weird. Oh, I guess it’s her bathroom, she just has some wood floors in part of her bathroom? That is a gigantic bathroom though. And Justin was the one dumping the water on her head too. She seems kind of cute here and I always like seeing her in her glasses.

Oh, and she nominated Courteney Cox and Chelsea Handler? Ugh.

Sometimes Jennifer does these odd expressions that make her look like it was Justin doing a drag impersonation of her. That sour piss smirk in particular.

    • Kiddo says:

      Indeed.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Love it.
Doesn’t hurt that he’s kinda cute, either.

    • V4Real says:

What a Debbie Downer. Mild discomfort? A few seconds of water is nothing to able bodied people. Think about the discomfort of people with ALS, diabetes, cancer, Autism and other issues. I donate to cancer research as well as Autism and I have donated blood, (though difficult for me) serveral times to the red cross. What’s wrong with having a little fun while donating to charity. I used the waste of water argument myself but it’s not that serious. Relax dude and open your wallet.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I think that was his point—pouring ice water over your head isn’t anything compared to what people with ALS go through, which is why he referred to it as “mild”.

I think it’s awesome he donated and encouraged others to as well without wasting water or making a video of himself. He used the opportunity to put the focus back on donating to charities (plural), and I give him props for that.

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah. It saddens me that these days there needs to be a spectacle made out of acts of charity. Just do it, do it humbly and quietly, and do it even when no one is watching and keeping score. And do it for OTHER charities, not just a one off on a trend of the day. FWIW, this has nothing to do with Jen Aniston. I was talking in generalities.

      • JenniferJustice says:

I agree with Kitten. Most of the ALS videos made by people are more about garnering attention for themselves rather than the cause. When I see LeAnne Rhymes in a video pullinig kids that aren’t her’s into it, and it’s deemed “participating in a charitable cause”, I can’t help but give her the side eye…and it’s because I don’t believe she’d have donated if she didn’t get to push herself into the spotlight – even for a moment’s focus. The ALS challenge has become an means for people to get attention and make them look like philanthropists when many are just starved for attention and seeking relevance.

I suppose if that’s what it takes to raise alot of money for a good cause, maybe we shouldn’t care about the dorks who just want to be looked at…a means to an end. Just don’t hold it against me for rolling my eyes at Goop taking the challenge in her bikini.

      • V4Real says:

Oh I see Kitten. Well as much as we dislike Charlie Sheen we might love his Ice Bucket challenge. Instead of dumping water on his head he dumped ten thousand in cash that he will donate. He challenged Ashton, the producer of Two and a Half men and someone else to match his contribution.

To others, I don’t see anything wrong with having fun while donating to a charitable cause. There are celebs who donate to charity and it flies under the radar. But even with the people who garners attention by using this challenge, let’s not forget that they can’t garner the attention unless someone else challenge them. They don’t nominate themselves, someone else does and they have to accept it.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

“But even with the people who garners attention by using this challenge, let’s not forget that they can’t garner the attention unless someone else challenge them. They don’t nominate themselves, someone else does and they have to accept it. ”

Yeah totally and you make a great point. A lot of the celebs who refused to do the challenge received backlash from the public so I certainly don’t blame them for doing it.
Regardless of how I feel about the videos, donating to charity is never not a good thing.

      • Sal says:

Agreed. Its a great cause and I donate to MND (Motor Neurone Disease as we call ALS) regularly having went to school with a girl who had MND (ALS) but this ice bucket thing I feel is so immature and I feel it actually demeans the illness. Cheap gimmicks aren’t necessary by most charities. Personally I am offended by the whole thing.

      • Ange says:

I was nominated and refused to do the challenge because I already support charities that get my meagre leftover funds and guess what? I was publicly hassled, called an a$$hole and a hater and a terrible person. That’s what these showy, public demands for charity are; an excuse for people to make themselves look like stars and demand others be charitable without one shred of knowledge of that other person’s circumstances. Nobody should ever demand charity, it should be freely given with a kind spirit.

  2. V4Real says:

My job is doing the ice bucket challenge but I chicken out. I don’t like cold. I will just donate. Some of my coworkers take part in The Polar Bear plunge every New Year. Let’s see these celebs do that. You’re entire body is in the ocean during one of the most brutal months of the winter in NY.

    • Erinn says:

They do polar bear things here too. Jumping into a partially frozen Nova Scotia lake is not something that’s on my list of things to do.

I’d chicken out too, I think. As long as you’re donating, I think that’s the real point anyway.

      • Lorzie says:

Glad to hear of a fellow Nova Scotian on the site Erinn. I’m down in Guysborough County and every year I say I’m going to do the polar bear dip..then last minute think of a very good reason why I shouldn’t lol.

    • Snazzy says:

Oh I did that last year — ok not quite polar bear as I’m in Switzerland but close enough.
      Swam 100m — it kicked my a**.

    • MrsB says:

Oh noo way I could do the Polar Bear Plunge. I was challenged to do the Ice bucket thing, and my 6 y.o. volunteered to take my place and I let him! 🙂 Seriously, I don’t know how people jump in freezing cold water like that, I’m in full winter gear once the temps drop into the 50’s.

    • Louisa says:

I did the polar bear jump this year in NY (Long Beach) with my 10 year old. It was fantastic! Really a lot of fun. That being said it was held on probably the nicest day of the winter. Cold but sunny which helped.

    • lucy2 says:

They do that here in NJ too on New Year’s Day, and always have a big turn out. No thanks!

    • V4Real says:

In NY they do the polar bear plunge at Coney Island on New Year’s day. I don’t participate but I always attend to support my coworkers. I’m in full winter gear while some people are walking around in swim trunks or swimsuits. They also go into the water more than once.

    • V4Real says:

I meant your entire body is in the water, not you’re. I hate auto correct and I should learn how to proof read.

  3. FingerBinger says:

It’s time time to stop with this. Just donate the money.

    • Kiddo says:

Yeah, I stopped watching some time back.

    • Artemis says:

No it’s not. They never received so much money. The donations are coming in purely because of this Challenge. This is a great way to use social media and get people to do something. It’s WORKING. And it’s fun to see famous people being goofy 🙂

I don’t know how anybody can complain or wish this to be stopped tbh. Some people’s hearts are colder than those ice buckets.

      • Kiddo says:

You can care about the cause and be tired of the bucket aspect simultaneously.

      • TheCountess says:

@Artemis, it’s a colossal waste of a resource. It’s fine to support a good cause, but as others have said, just donate the money. This spectacle has become nothing more than celebrities and public figures self-promoting.

      • Luca26 says:

Yeah it’s a worthy cause but if you look at how many people on the planet suffer and die because of lack of access to clean water vs those that affected by ALS it seems a bit off.

      • Artemis says:

Not when the enormous success is directly linked to the Challenge.

The ALS Association has raised $79.7 million to combat Lou Gehrig’s Disease since July 29, as the Ice Bucket Challenge continues to encourage people around the world to dump ice over their heads and send in money.

The organization raised just $2.5 million during the same period last year.

        Seriously, some research wouldn’t hurt.

Other ALS projects have benefited from this viral campaign too.
Just put up with the buckets….

EDIT: I’m aware of that, there are people who use recycled water and bring attention to the water-wasting aspect of the Challenge.

      • TheCountess says:

@Artemis, which means people are donating without doing the stupid challenge. How about, just donate?

Gimmick-based fundraising is not a long-term plan for any non-profit (except perhaps Komen).

      • Sal says:

Artemis so all charities now should sell their soul and employ demeaning gimmicks in case it garners them more money? Sorry but that is RIDICULOUS! I went to high school with a girl who had MND (since passed away) and I am offended by your comment that you need to DEMEAN the disease, just for a fast buck. Maybe its you that is cold.

      • Janet says:

I agree they shouldn’t stop. Personally I never knew what ALS was until the ice bucket challenge started. The challenge and the fact that it included celebrities made sure it went viral and reached more people than they normally would have thus creating awareness and raising a tone of money at the same. after seeing what ALS does to a person, i choose to celebrate the challenge.

    • Paige says:

It isn’t that difficult. How hard is it to pour ice cold water over your head in the middle of SUMMER. I hope everyone is donating and not just doing it because they want to do what everyone else is doing. I hope they actually care about the cause. I already did my part. 🙂

      • Erinn says:

I guarantee, most of the people on my FB news feed aren’t donating. I’ve had some of them doing it with no clue why they were doing it.

    • JibberJabber says:

How is this demeaning? I have a friend who lost her mother to ALS when we were in college. She doesn’t speak for everyone affected by ALS, of course, but I asked about this and she doesn’t have any problem with anything harmless ans/or silly, if it raises money to fight this disease. She knows how terrible the disease is and can’t be bothered even if people ARE fame whoring themselves, because this has raised a massive amount of money to fight it.

  4. Ally.M says:

I’ve nothing negative to say about such a worthwhile cause. Good for her for mentioning donating. So fed up of watching celebrities posing and saying nothing about the charity or donating.

  5. Gina says:

That was actually pretty cute! I think it was done on a deck outside her living room (judging by the flooring).

    • tracking says:

Yeah, that’s what I thought too–covered deck. Cute interaction between the two. Both came across as more laid back than their rather stiff RC appearances.

  6. The New Classic says:

That was actually really cute. They both come across as likeable here.

  7. TheRealMaya says:

Not surprised that Jennifer made and released the challenge video this week – she is going on a week long tv promotion for her straight to video movie and this comes just in time for her to talk about it.

What I am most surprised over is that she didn’t write a hashtag saying the ice water is actually SmartWater – Jennifer never misses a chance to promote her products.

PS: the charity should make sure they receive the donation Jennifer pledged. Haiti is still waiting for the half a million she pledged years ago.

    • Malone says:

So much crankiness over what seem like nice enough videos for charity.

    • Gina says:

      Oh my God…

    • Artemis says:

A lot of celebrities who did it have projects lined up or like Olivia Wilde promote their personal causes. Or like Hiddleston and Cumberbatch and members of the Marvel team, to please their Tumblr fanbase. Not that I think they’re completely selfish but it is fact that this is a great way for them to do something good while looking good themselves! You should snark on most celebrities if Aniston ticks you off so much but I doubt you’ll do that 🙂

This is a great opportunity for celebs to show a different side of them, to seem endearing and relatable. The best part however is that people are watching and donating! The charity never received so much money and it’s all thanks to the Ice Bucket challenge so the snark is really misplaced this time.

    • tracking says:

Um, okay. If I remember correctly, she paid 500K for a painting with all proceeds going to Haiti.

    • doofus says:

meh, give her a break ladies, she apparently can’t help herself. I’m just surprised it wasn’t 7 paragraphs long with the details of how many homes she “wrecked”.

I can snark on almost anyone, but I won’t snark on someone for doing good.

BTW, what’s the source for Aniston never giving the $500,000 she pledged to Haiti? I was really surprised that someone would pledge that and not give, especially someone so high-profile, so I did a little search and found nothing…so, do you have a source?

or are you just throwing out a slur that’s not true?

    • lucy2 says:

She JUST got challenged. You don’t do it until you’re challenged, right? So why would she have done it earlier?
I never heard about the painting thing, but looking it up, the charity event was at Christie’s in NY. I don’t think they let alone stroll out of there without paying.

    • Paige says:

I don’t see the point of hating on her if it’s for a good cause.

      • FLORC says:

That’s not the argument. I think it’s this.
Celebs are self promoting with this stunt. And they’re forgetting about the donation portion. It’s not hating on people for doing good. It’s taking issue with people who are claiming attention for acting like they’ll do good. Not actually doing good.
Or rather that’s the argument and it’s valid if all ducks line up.

        Lucy2
It’s possible. You pay at a later date. You may not get the item. Of course, I think that’s pretty bad if you fail to pay. Outbid only to stiff the charity.
Not claiming she did. Just the act of it is bad, but possible.

      • Paige says:

I said that in my other comment. I hope people are donating too and not just using it for attention. Celebs and average Joe’s.

  8. Jess says:

This was cute!!! I like that she mentioned donating a ton of money, that’s what the challenge should be about, and raising awareness. Also love that she didn’t try to dress up cute or do it in a bikini, she looks so normal and down to earth. Very sweet of Justin to give her a kiss on the head, and pour very slowly, lol.

    • Gina says:

I think it was cute too. He’s protective of her. But, she sure got a lot more water (and ice) dumped on her than he did by a long shot!

  9. Logan says:

“I’m going to make a “huge ginormous donation” and so should you.”
    Dear Jennifer Aniston,
Its good to know you will be making a donation to ALS but you don’t have to brag about how large or huge your donation will be!

    • Miss M says:

I won’t throw shade at her. There were celebrities who diSclosed how much they donated and others who didn’t even mention if they were going to do.

      • eva says:

I don’t like that she told people to make a huge donation, not everyone can afford it and I Imagine any donation is welcome no matter how small.

      • Logan says:

Thanks Eva that’s my point exactly. You don’t need to let us know you will be making a ginormous donation and others should too. Not everyone has her type of resources and it felt like she was rubbing it in.

      • JibberJabber says:

Are we really going to pick nits and find fault with someone who’s pledging to donate generously and encourages others to do the same? It’s not like she’s shaming people who can’t afford to. I think that’s actively trying to find something to be upset about in what is meant to be a light-hearted push for a good cause.

      • Miss M says:

@JibberJabber: I am with you on it. I cannot afford to make a ginormous donation and I didn’t feel insulted. I thinks she meant to say she was going to do it and was encouraging others to do it (within their means).

      • Kate2 says:

Yup, seems like nitpicking to me. It was a lighthearted throwaway comment, one that I could easily see myself making and not meaning it to mean anything more than “Please donate as much as you can!” Which I don’t think is shaming anyone.

I donated $5 and I didn’t think anything of her comment.

    • Jess says:

Why nitpick? She has a lot of money and she would’ve been bashed had she only donated the $25 that’s suggested if you do the challenge. Maybe she just wanted to encourage others to donate more, those that can afford it, obviously she wasn’t trying to make those who can’t donate feel like crap, I don’t understand why people take it so personally.

  10. Malone says:

    They have cute dogs.

I think it’s nice that Aniston was ok being unglam for this. Unlike Goop with her backyard bikini.

  11. kayyy says:

Jen’s video took place in her Sauna it seems, guess they love dogs they’re running around in both videos,

  12. O.K.P says:

Pls take it easy on the hate the real maya, lmao! We get it. You positively detest Aniston and somehow find a way to trash everything she does including the ice bucket challenge which is for a noble cause. Something tells me that were it to be Angelina Jolie ,you would make her seem like a paragon of virtue lol.

    • TheRealMaya says:

So where are you when Jen fans attack Angelina whenever she does something for charity? That’s right – it’s only when people write something against Jennifer we are haters, need a life etc – hypocritical aren’t we?

@Gina: at least Angelina has children she loves and would do anything for them. Where are the kids your idol Jennifer always claimed she wanted these past 2 decades?

      • Gina says:

I don’t stan for Jennifer, just commenting on the article. I don’t like Angelina though, never have….ever since her cutting days, making out with her brother and her (at the time) ruthless manner of finding a baby daddy. She always gave off that weird vibe, but don’t take it personally….I’m not talking about you and it’s only my opinion…..others can continue the love fest.

      • Sal says:

Gina, so someone cutting is a reason to dislike a person? Do you also dislike people who are anorexic or bulimic? I can’t believe people are so cold. How great it must be not to have had a mental illness. One kiss on the mouth does not translate into ‘making out’. And there is nothing ‘ruthless’ in how she found her ‘baby daddy’. He had been separated for months. She was divorced. They fell in love, she got pregnant and then they decided to adopt. I’m not sure on what planet that can even possibly be considered ‘ ruthless’. If it is, every parent in history is. It seems like most haters, you are judging her on her teens/twenties, and are so self-righteous but I’m sure you wouldn’t like *your* faults dragged up and your face smushed in it all the time. I think her humanitarian work 50 times makes up for any HUMAN mistakes she made as a youngster. But if you want to be so narrow-minded, self-righteous and judgmental that you dismiss a human beings goodness all for silly mistakes and something as minor as cutting? I mean, who even judges a person for being traumatised that they do that? Since when did *that* even become something to judge people over? Do you also judge people with other signs of mental illness? Laugh at people in a wheelchair? Quite frankly I think in her heart and soul she is a much better and humane person than you. Maybe you need to have a good look at yourself, because your coldness is evil imo.

      • maggie says:

        Balls!

    • Kim1 says:

What happened to Jen’s baby bump?
I wish we could have seen Justin’s lovely eyeballs in the video.
      Oh well maybe next time
I see she challenged Courtney so no hard feelings for shading her post plastic surgery appearance.

    • Paige says:

@Gina So you don’t find anything wrong with calling someone else’s child a spawn? Even if you don’t like the parents you don’t insult the children. Plus, you only brought up her past. You didn’t mention any of the things she’s done to help others. It isn’t 1999 anymore it’s 2014.

  13. McCall says:

At least she did her challenge. AJ was challenged by Stella M. but didn’t do it.
I don’t see how she planned it for pr for her movie as suggested above since she didn’t plan the timing of this whole craze nor the person who nominated her. Some things are just a coincidence.

    • TheRealMaya says:

Umm she was nominated by her fiancé – funny how her fans claim she is famous and loved by other celebs and yet no one nominated her expect her fiancé.

Plus Justin was nominated more than 1 – 2 weeks ago and didn’t do it until end of last week and promptly nominated Miss Jennifer Aniston right in time for her promotion week.

    • eva says:

Why bring AJ into it, just because you’re nominated doesn’t mean you’re obligated to do it, there’s the forefit donation route. AJ and BP do more than enough for charity continually throughout the year. And how do you know they didn’t do it, just because they haven’t posted it on youtube or whatever.

    • Gwen says:

Adele was challenge also and didn’t do it so what.

    • Sal says:

I think AJ probably donated far more money over the years to it and other charities than Aniston ever has. And its the money that is important. But BALLS to you for not being able to leave her out of an Aniston thread. How sad. Besides, EVERYTHING to you JA stans is a mere ‘coincidence’. It has been a mere ‘coincidence’ for 8 years. Time for some to wake up methinks.

  14. Talie says:

I really hope she does a Howard Stern interview this year. And she was also really cute in that video…

    • Tippy says:

I doubt that Jenn has any plans to do Stern’s show in the future.

In the late 80’s when she was an unknown Jennifer appeared on his show as a Nutri-system girl.

Years later, after she became famous on Friends, Stern replayed the old tapes just to humiliate her.

  15. Sara says:

    Wasting water not necessary.

  16. Peppa says:

I don’t think Chelsea Handler will accept the challenge because she will probably melt if a bucket of water gets dumped on her head.

  17. eliza says:

Good for them. No shade from me.

  18. O.K.P says:

@ the real maya,i actually like Angelina Jolie. But I’ve always loved Jennifer Aniston ever since friends. I just have a soft spot for her. But as for calling her my Idol, you are just hilarious, LMAO! It’s a free world though. Don’t take it personal about what I said. Your first comment had me in fits.

  19. mollie says:

I think this was really adorable, and up til now, the only thought I really ever had about her was that she really knows how to rock a black shirt like noone else.
This added a dimension. Super cute.

  20. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I’m surprised she did it—I’m surprised anyone did it. I think it’s dumb, but I guess it raises money, so that’s good. Plus I HATE cold water (seriously–I don’t even go swimming). I’d rather just donate.

But I like that she actually looks like a normal person doing it–she looks like she had been lazing around the house when they did it.

  21. Jayna says:

I’m sure the people that do it to them are loving it and get the water freezing. I had to take cold showers once years ago in my 20s when the hot water heater broke, and it was a couple of weeks or so before they came out to replace it at the apartment I lived in. I can’t describe how cold it was. It wasn’t the same as a cold shower where you turn it to colder. It was mind-numbing cold where you can’t catch your breath.

  22. Blythe says:

    Jennifer’s was cute.

  23. gigoloaunt says:

    That was super cute.

  24. Jenns says:

Man, tough crowd. I’m not a huge Jennifer fan, but the video was cute.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

As sick as I am of these videos, I was curious enough about Aniston’s vid to watch it.
      I thought it was cute.
Honestly, people would hate her no matter what she does.

  25. Camille (The Original) says:

Sorry, but I can’t stand her voice, I find her irritating and the opposite of cute/sweet. JMO. But good on her for doing it I guess. (And honestly, not everyone is going to love the same actor/actress that you do).

I liked Matt Damon’s ALS IB video that Lainey posted today. He had 2x good messages in it.

  26. maggie says:

    Awesome and cute!

  27. Sal says:

Well its good to see her doing something for charity. I won’t shade her for this even though I think the whole thing, no matter who does it, is immature and makes a mockery of MND.

  28. ike says:

No extensions were harmed in the making of this video.

  29. Mrs. Darcy says:

Just curious…why does Justin pronounce his last name differently form his British cousin, Louis Theroux (pronounced “Ther-ooh”, not “Thorough”)? I still find him super cringily pretentious but if getting Jennifer to do it raises more money all the better. I can’t believe she wore her glasses though, a bit weird as I avoid water/rain at all costs when wearing mine.

    • Alice says:

Probably for the same reason that anyone pronounces someone’s last name different depending on what country they’re from. Different accents, although the british cousin’s version is closer to the proper pronounciation of the french surname, even if it’s not exact, since the “th” (as in the) doesn’t exist in french and would probably be pronounced closer to “Tay-roo”. Likely they go by however the philosopher “jean-jacques theroux’s” name is pronounced in their respective countries, as that would probably be the most known example of their surname. Acclimatisation, assimulation. Plus you end up looking like a pretentious wanker when you try to impose a foreign pronounciation.

I imagine that the french actors/actresses who come to Hollywood probably don’t make much of an issue when their names aren’t pronounced as they are supposed to be either. In the end, if they know who you are, that’s what counts, regardless of how they pronounce your name.

  30. Carrie says:

I’m so tired of the ice bucket challenge. As much as its a good cause, it’s just another of those fad causes where everyone is concerned for a few weeks because it’s trendy, then they’ll get bored and thatll be that until the next one comes along.
