Julia Louis-Dreyfus in red Carolina Herrera at the Emmys: incredible and flattering?

The The 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Press Room in LA
This post is dedicated to some of the female winners last night. As Julianna Margulies mentioned during her speech, it’s a wonderful time for women on television.

Heidi Klum at The 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in LA

First off we have Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who took home the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy, for Veep for the second year in a row. (It was her fifth Emmy overall.) She’s in an amazing Carolina Herrera halter neck full length gown. She told Giuliana Rancic that the color was raspberry and she said the patent belt was burgundy. This was one of my favorite red dresses last night. Of course Julia also won the night with that bit with Bryan Cranston. She played it like she had no idea who he was until they locked tongues. She’s such an excellent comedic actress! Here’s Louis-Dreyfus’ acceptance speech.

Julianna Margulies worked the hell out of a formfitting black and grey Narciso Rodriguez gown. (I feel somewhat guilty for snatching Margulies, as Kaiser love Good Wife.) She looks amazing and I love the detail on this dress. The back is especially stunning. Julianna won for Lead Actress in a Drama, having won once previously for Good Wife in 2011. (She also earned a Supporting Actress Emmy for ER in 1995.) Here’s her speech.

Jessica Lange took home the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, for American Horror Story: Coven. This is her third Emmy, she won Supporting Actress for AHS in 2012 and Lead Actress for Grey Gardens in 2009. Lange seemed pleasantly surprised to have won yet again, you could tell she wasn’t expecting it at all. Lange is in J. Mendel.

I’m throwing Sarah Paulson in at the end because I don’t want to focus on the negative too much. She’s in a ridiculous Armani Privé gown with polka dot tulle puffing out from every angle. Why would anyone even make this dress other than for a costume? Paulson was nominated in the same category as her American Horror Story: Coven co-star, Jessica Lange.

Shit. I kind of love Paulson’s dress!

    • Skyblue says:

Me too! I was thinking it would be as fun as hell to wear and poke people with! Oops! Sorry I took your eye out!

      • mimif says:

Lol I know it’s very inspirational. Oops, sorry your small child is tangled in my web of tulle & eye pokers!

      • FLORC says:

        Me 3!
Its just fun to look at and doesn’t look like sitting down or eating too much would show in the dress. Love it!

    • Erinn says:

I kind of do, too. It’s got this weird, staticy look. Maybe not the greatest red carpet dress, but I’m digging how different it is, even if it’s not a ‘good’ look.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Your comment begs the question: why are you stoned so early in the AM?
      Is it 4:20 out there?

I adore JLD and I think she looks great, even though her dress is pretty safe. Julianna Marguiles is so so pretty IMO– I’m kind of a stan–but I wish she had chosen a different dress…this one is kinda boring.

    • PunkyMomma says:

I do, too, in a Beetlejuice kinda way.

      • Kiddo says:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ dress looked better than it does in these photos. I like Julianna Margulies, but seeing that dress in motion did absolutely no favors for her butt, I’m sorry. Sarah Paulson’s dress was so incredibly interesting and different, but her styling says the wife in “Everybody loves Raymond”, or simply ‘soccer mom’, while the dress is more Haute couture. This could have worked on Nyong’o, Theron or maybe Swinton, to toss out a few.

Oops, I didn’t mean to place this here. But I agree on the Beetlejuice aspect now that I’m here, lol

      • Carlye says:

Reminds me of Pig Pen from Peanuts…

    • Frida_K says:

Me too. She is a little bland and doesn’t carry it off well, but if someone with a bit more personality in their looks wore it…wow, too much fun!

I kind of want to wonder what Angelina Jolie would look like in this dress but no, maybe she’s a little too far on the other end of the spectrum. Well… maybe.

It would be an amazing dress on the right person. Like maybe me, and I’d be wearing my black lizard cowboy boots underneath, of course.

      😉

    • QQ says:

Yo! me Too I saw it and I was like OMF this is some magical dress SHIT!

      Everyone else here looks:

Julia: Supremely flattering, slighty wee bit boring?

Jessica: VERY Flattering, also kinda no pizzazz

Julianna: Kickass details.. Scarily Madonna-Sparethin sooo Idk how to feel

    • eliza says:

Me three. Only the second dress of the Emmy’ s I have liked. It is really interesting and she looks great in it.

The thing Margulies is wearing looks like a faded rag to me.

    • Stef Leppard says:

Her dress is interesting. I don’t hate it.

    • Spikey says:

I’m so with you. This is amazing!

    • Rae says:

Oh thank god! I thought I’d be the only one.

    • tealily says:

Completely! It looks like confetti. So fun!

    • Janet says:

She looks like a dog with jumping red fleas.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

So everyone’s stoned and nobody thought to share their green with me?

      Rude.

    • Mel says:

I thought it was rather wonderful myself.
The mesh is too big, but I love the idea.

    • Serenity says:

Me too! I love that dress. Looks so much fun to wear!!

  2. Jenns says:

If there is a God, and if he likes me, he will let me age like Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

    • Sayrah says:

No kidding! She looks like she took the potion in Death Becomes Her!

      • PunkyMomma says:

Bahaha. (Wishing the magic potion existed.)

      • Sunny says:

Comment of the day! Such a great reference to a very funny movie.

As to JLD does look terrific. I tend to think it has to do with more than exercise, eating well, and good work. She seems to really love her family, and she has a job where she gets to laugh her ass off most days. Laughter really is the best medicine.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She looks fantastic, doesn’t she? She has grown from cute to beautiful.

    • AM says:

I can’t imagine that she hasn’t had a little work done, but whatever she’s done is very good work. She looks amazing for any age.

      • Mel says:

I can (imagine that she’s had no work done, that is).
She looks her age – and yes, she looks wonderful. 🙂

      • Bob Loblaw says:

My Mom has seen her around town many times, I don’t think she’s had much done, she’s tiny and energetic and has good genes.

  3. Anna says:

Sarah’s dress is hideous. She should be hanging out with Lena

  4. Marianne says:

I kind of like Sarah Paulson’s dress. I think it might have been a bit better on a younger actress, but it just seems so fun.

    • mimif says:

It’s totally fun. It makes me want to drink champagne and roll around on the grass. I would wear the shit out of that dress, and I’m 92.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I would have loved to wear that dress to my fifth birthday party

    • MediaMaven says:

that dress looks like it’s so itchy – not only for her, but everyone sitting in near proximity to her.

      • lucy2 says:

Yeah, I kept pitying whoever was sitting next to her.
I think if it were just the skirt, it’d be different and fun, but on the bodice too is just too much.

  5. mia girl says:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus looked amazing. Her performance in Veep is inspired.

She is like a fine wine. She only gets better with time.

  6. Lilacflowers says:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus always looks amazing. She knows what suits her and she works it. Julianna always makes bold choices, works them, and always looks stunning. Both are wonderful. I’m so happy they won and I’m so happy we get to watch these fabulous, mature women work.

  7. Swordspoint says:

Re: Paulson’s dress — I like it too. I mean, a little less pouf would be more attractive, I think, but I still like it.

  8. Hissyfit says:

Yay! Bunch of great actresses! Love Julia and Julianne’s simple dresses. Don’t like Sarah’s. It looks like she stinks and the flys are all over her.

  9. Francis says:

I love all the actresses dresses.
    Julia looks amazing.
    Julianna Looks beautiful.
Jessica Lange looks elegant ,I LOVE Love LUv Her!
Paulson’s dress is fierce and she’s wearing it well. That’s a Oscar dress. IMO
I give her best dressed for being fierce and going for it! No half stepping.

  10. alexc says:

Julia looks better now than she did 20 years ago. If she’s had work done, and I think she has, it’s magnificent. She is sexy as hell.

    • mimif says:

Yeah she really looks great. I think she’s had some work done too, but just goes to show laughter really is the best medicine.

  11. poppy says:

how does one sit in a bespangled tulle peplum?

  12. PreciousRobicheaux says:

    Elaine Benes, I love you!

  13. Adrien says:

Sarah Paulson’s dress was a little too much. Could have worked if the net tulle was covering only the the top half not the whole dress. It looked like someone spat pomegranate seeds on a fishnet. But it’s a fun dress. Would I have liked it if Lena Dunham wore it. Hell, yes!

  14. Noel says:

I think the dress fits Sarah very well! This is the type of dress Lena should have gone for.

JLD is just a snoozefest to me.

  15. eribra says:

Sarah Paulson’s dress is the best of the night for me. I don’t even know who this lady is but she has won me over with this dress.

  16. Pants says:

JLD was one of my best dressed of the night. I just love her!

  17. Michelle says:

Julia is so pretty and gracious. She looks better and better each year.

  18. kri says:

Sarah looks like a very exotic, poisonous sea creature. Maybe an urchin. Or a man-o-war. The jellyfish, not the ship. JLD’s dress is perfection.

  19. Size Does Matter says:

Jessica Lang (Lange?) – would not have known that was her if not for the captions. Maybe it’s the odd expression in the photo.

JLD totally in the running for best dressed. She and Halle.

  20. als says:

I think Julianna Margulies’ hairdo is called ‘gym hair’.
Definitely Sarah Paulson won the night for me – that dress is attractive, I can’t take my eyes off of it and not in a bad way.

  21. Jayna says:

JLD is looking so good for her age. I was shocked when I read her age once. Sometimes the beauties don’t age well, and often overdo the fillers and plastic surgery, and the cute, normal-looking girls age beautifully into their 40s, 50s, 60s and knowing how to do minimal work way down the road, not too early at 40. no pillow face, or some not doing anything.

  22. LAK says:

Still can’t get over what Jessica Lange did to her face. So unnecessary.

  23. Mingy says:

Jessica Lange has played the same character in every season of AHS…enough already.

  24. Lux says:

It’s like Julianna and Julia have been sacrificing virgins or something. If you told me they were in their 30’s I wouldn’t even blink.

  25. Tiffany says:

JLD has 5 Emmys. When you see her perform, you absolutely know why.

  26. Kate2 says:

    Yes, love her. She’s awesome.

  27. Kate says:

I love Paulson’s dress. So fun.

I love Julianna Marguiles, but her styling is always so severe. Just once I’d like to see her in soft make-up and with her hair down and left natural. I bet she’d look a good 10 years younger.

  28. Farrah says:

Julianna Margulies is too damn skinny. It’s not flattering at all. Her dress looks like its hanging on a rail. Plus she is too pale to go that thin. Her look didn’t win me over. Julianna gets a D on her emmy look. D as in Don’t to this look again and Don’t skip anymore meals.

  29. Bob Loblaw says:

I like Paulsen’s dress, and I’m no fan of tulle, but I don’t like her styling at all. Her hair, make-up and jewelry are very blah and a mismatch for the drama of the dress.

  30. melain says:

Julia looks classy and amazing as ever. The woman is on a 20-year hot streak.

  31. Jade says:

After dlisted compared that dress to bedbugs, I just can’t. I do think somebody else could work it at the Met Gala. Riri?
