Charlie Hunnam had a ‘nervous breakdown’ about dropping out of ‘Fifty Shades’

At this point, does anyone still care about Charlie Hunnam pulling out of Fifty Shades of Grey? It was funny/interesting when it happened, but the film has been shot and the first trailer has been released and hopefully, Dakota Fanning Johnson (my bad) is currently enrolled in some kind of public speaking class ahead of the publicity tour. It’s done. But Charlie keeps talking about it! I guess he wants to make sure that everyone knows A) he was the original choice, B) he was the one who pulled out and he wasn’t fired and C) that he pulled out for complete legit reasons. What reasons? Previously, Hunnam has maintained that it was all about “scheduling conflicts.” His new story is that he was in the midst of a nervous breakdown. Huh.

For all those firm believers out there that things happen for a reason, it’s worth noting that Charlie Hunnam was never going to take the role of Christian Grey in the first place. The actor made international headlines when he landed the salacious “Fifty Shades of Grey” role last summer, and even more when he dropped out two months later. At the time the “Sons of Anarchy” star steered clear of the media frenzy surrounding the departure, but now – a year later – he’s finally ready to talk about what actually happened.

“I wouldn’t have signed up in the first place if I didn’t want to do it,” he explains. “It was a really, really difficult time in my life.”

Hunnam reveals that when he met with film director Sam Taylor-Johnson he only went because he just wanted to meet her and was intrigued by her as a “super cool artist.” He was up-front from the get-go about his availability, in that he had none.

“And then I just fell in love, creatively,” Hunnam says. “I started talking about this thing and I just got so excited. I fell in love with the character and started seeing him and becoming intoxicated, which is the way I work: I find a character I love and I start thinking about it all the time.”

Then it all blew up. Shortly after accepting the role, production on the sixth season of “Sons of Anarchy” wound up, going later than originally anticipated. Hunnam had already been stretched thin thanks to his commitment to shoot Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” in Toronto during his hiatus, a schedule that was crafted by the notorious writer and director to personally accommodate Hunnam’s commitment to the FX series. It was at that point that the actor started to look at “the black and white” of the scheduling and knew something had to give.

“I was going to finish ‘Sons’ at like 11 p.m. Friday night, get on the plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for ‘Fifty,’ missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning. And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting ‘Crimson Peak’ in Toronto. I just had like … frankly, something of a nervous breakdown.”

In the two months between “Fifty”s casting announcement and Hunnam dropping out, he realized the magnitude of the role he had committed to, especially with online petitions popping up from rabid fans protesting his casting and everyone wanting to talk to the star about the sexy role.

“I just said, ‘I can’t … I can’t …,'” he remembers. “To fail on such a grand scale – because ‘Fifty’s going to be massive, it’s going to be huge. I really didn’t want to fail on such a grand scale and I just couldn’t transition from Jax Teller to Christian Grey in 48 hours. I bit off more than I could chew and it was painful. I loved the character and I wanted to do it.”

Going back on his word was equally painful for Hunnam, who commits to being a man of his word and says that if he promises to do something, you can “take it to the bank” that it’s going to get done. Not being able to follow through in this case took everything out of him.

“It was just a s**t situation,” he concludes. “I was really, really, sorry to do it. It was one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t situations.”

[From Moviefone]

Okay. At long last, I finally believe him. I believe that we went into the audition process knowing that he wouldn’t take the part, but he was just interested in meeting Sam Taylor Johnson. And then it just kept getting more interesting and he was in over his head and badly over-scheduled. I think the “nervous breakdown” part is a bit hyperbolic but I get it. Work stress. And he probably did want to break out in some major (crappy) film franchise and he was heartbroken that the part went to someone else in the end.

Slightly OT: Man, Juice (and his fantastic a**) is going to die a horrible death. 🙁

    • Aussie girl says:

That what I said to my sister. The first episodes of sons was very full on. My sister thinks it will end with him killing Gemma.
Back to the post, I believe him n what he says. I believe he was excited to work Sam Taylor J and about the role.

    • Lori says:

      God it Will be ugly.

  2. original kay says:

Whatever the reason, he should be thanking his lucky stars he’s not connected to that mess.

I have only watched him in Pacific Rim, where he was fine because it wasn’t about the characters anyway. No interest in SOA.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I agree with you. I also find it so hard to believe that there is this massive audience waiting to watch 50 Shades. I mean I get with the incredibly poorly written Twilight that pre-teen and teen girls would rush to the theatre ’cause “twue wove” but it’s hard for me to imagine middle-aged women lining up to watch 50 as much as they may have enjoyed the “naughty” book privately at home. That said, I haven’t and won’t be reading it, so what do I know?

      • Dany says:

This movie will make money, money, money.
        Keyword: hate-watching.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Dany,
I love me some good ole hate watching but I sure as heck won’t pay money to do it! That’s what cable, Netflix, and other the others are for or maybe, I’m just cheap 🙂

  3. Violet says:

    Dakota Fanning?

  4. GiGi says:

I get it… I’m like that. My husband calls it, “the overachiever fallout” which is basically when you realize you actually CAN’T do it all, if you want to do any of it well.

Plus, it really is a BFD to pull out of filming once you’ve committed. He should feel lucky that it all worked out in his favor, but I’m sure it was a time of high anxiety!

  5. Yellowshaba says:

I really do like him and I have seen all of his movies. even though I didn’t read 50 shades of gray, i know what its about, but do not see him pulling off that part. Although Jaime dormer seems quite fitting for the role

  6. JB says:

As happy as I am that he dropped out of this craptastic movie, he would’ve killed it as Christian Grey. Aside from SOA, he really is a terrific actor & he oozes tremendous sex appeal. I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but this man sizzles on screen. Many have converted after watching just a few of his sex scenes on SOA. Just… gorgeous and dirty hot!!

    • Rocketmerry says:

I completely agree. I usually don’t particularly like blonds (they just don’t do it for me), but as I’ve said before he’s my exception. The guy is talented, gorgeous and very, very attractive.
He was fantastic in Green Street Hooligans, loved him since then, but I have yet to catch this SOA everybody keep mentioning. Is it worth the watch (aside from the obvious reasons)?

      • Amanda (@BitingPanda) says:

        It truly is.

It’s funny, it’s dark, it has an amazing supporting cast. You fall in love, you get your heart broken, you get repulsed, you get vengeful, you get involved in their shit.

Charlie didn’t even start out as my favorite, but over 6 (now 7) season, he has won me with his commitment to the role and his charisma.

        Do it. : )

      • Erinn says:

Ah, he’s my blonde exception as well! Very few blonde men are attractive to me. However, Charlie is just fantastic. I can’t handle watching SOA – I get too stressed out for the characters watching shows like that.

But I loved him on Undeclared as Lloyd.

      • Rocketmerry says:

Thanks Amanda, will do. Man, 6 seasons? I’ve got my evenings planned for a while, it seems 😀

      • JB says:

Yes, I agree w/ Amanda! I loved Charlie in Green Street Hooligans, Undeclared, and the UK Queer As Folk… that’s what drew me in to watch SOA , even though I didn’t think the whole mororcycle club culture would be my thing. But it’s very well written and the characters are not caricatures; so much depth and layers to every one of them. It’s a shame the show, cast members and Kurt Sutter haven’t been nominated for Emmys or Golden Globes (other than one GG win for Katey Sagal).

It may be too violent for some viewers’ tastes, but it IS a very good show. Up there with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, IMHO.

    • lylaooo says:

i love Charlie.. he´s awesome as Jax Teller and i would love to see him on fifty shades just because he is gorgeous !!!

  7. Jane says:

He is asked about that it’s not him bringing it up.

  8. PunkyMomma says:

I can buy this explanation and would have preferred Charlie over Jamie Dornan – I find Charlie much more convincing as Christian Grey. After viewing the trailer, I won’t be seeing this film. Oh well.

    • Mom2two says:

Same here. Just look at the heat Charlie brings in those Calvin Klein ads that were recently released. Way more than Dornan, in my opinion.

      • Al says:

Check out Jamie’s CK ads w/ Natalia Vodianova, Kate Moss and Eva Mendes. They are pretty sizzling.

When he was a model, he was the #1 male model in the world. He now downplays it to seem like a serious actor who never dabbled it that sort of lowly work, but he was really huge in fashion. I bet that’s how he was spotted by Sofia Coppola for that minor role in Marie Antoinette.

Jamie looks much better w/ a light tan though. He looks a little pasty in the trailer. My opinion.

  9. TheCountess says:

This guy sounds like a drama queen.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have mixed feelings. After my divorce, I got up at 5:00 in the morning to be at my first job by 7:00, worked until 3:00, then went straight to my second job and worked until midnight 6 days a week. I’m not saying “poor me,” but you do what you have to do. I didn’t have children, and there are people out there doing what I did, plus trying to care for kids at the same time. And he probably made more in a week than I did in a year. On the other hand, I wasn’t doing something so public, and I understand that if he felt he was not going to be able to do a good job, that would make him very stressed. And I also try not to ever break my word. But he does seem a little dramatic about what was a difficult situation for him in his mind, but in reality he was in a position that a lot of people would be very grateful for. I don’t know.

      • GiGi says:

The only reason I’m truly sympathetic is because of personal experience. I had to break a contract to appear in a very small role on a one-hour cop drama a couple of years ago. And it was a huge deal. Enormous. My agent completely lost her sh!t and they changed filming around to accommodate my schedule. And I literally was just a bit player with something like 10 lines and 3 scenes. A nobody.

So I can get why he was freaking out when he realized he’d have to walk from the lead in a feature film. Yikes!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That is so cool! I didn’t know you were an actor. Yeah, as I said, if I had done a bad job at work, millions of people wouldn’t be watching, so I get that it’s a different kind of pressure, and I can’t STAND to feel unprepared for work, so I get that, too.

      • Wiffie says:

I understand both sides. I think it’s circumstances, timing and pressure that have a part in a nervous breakdown coming on. You can be just as busy and handle it one time, but at another time or another year, you could really break down from it all. When I was working, in school, and sleeping 3 hours a night, i was fine. Thrived almost. But recently with a early booming small business all night, being pregnant sahm all day to a toddler, with one day at a job, I nearly had a nervous breakdown. It’s all in where you are mentally and other circumstances. It’s not a mathematical equation.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh my gosh, Wiffie, that’s enough to break anybody down! I couldn’t do that either. For one thing, you’re physically not yourself, probably tired, nauseated and all, then add in a demanding toddler, one of the hardest jobs ever, plus the pressure of your own business startup and another day job? I just want to give you a hug and watch your toddler so you can get a nap. Hang in there and I hope you get to slow down somehow soon.

  10. raptor says:

I can still only think of him as Lloyd from Undeclared.

  11. Chris says:

    My mum loves him.

  12. Talie says:

I still think he handled it wrong and looked incredibly unprofessional. He’s lucky he’s a man pulling these shenanigans because Hollywood would not have forgiven a woman, as we’ve seen.

  13. SamiHami says:

He should be thanking his lucky stars that it didn’t work out. It might seem like a disappointment now, but that movie is going to be a massive disaster. I think in the long run he’ll be very glad for the way things worked out.

  14. Innie Outie says:

Oh Charlie.. I’d appreciate it if you shut up about 50SOG already because it starts killing my generally positive feelings towards you. Especially about how you fell in love with that badly written caricature of a man.

    • Beatrice says:

Yes! Charlie, you dodged the bullet. Now just shut up and thank your lucky stars.

    • kennedy says:

To be fair, I don’t think he ever brings it up. He is ALWAYS asked about it. This article unfairly paints him as the instigator but it’s clear that he’s always asked about it and is very, very polite and thoughtful in his answer.

  15. InvaderTak says:

He just took over from Chris Evans as neurotic actor of the moment. Hope he’s in a better place now though.

  16. Mia4S says:

I’m sadly getting really tired of him. Of course his Hollywood career will be fine (he’s a man after all). I think he’s another classic case of don’t know your favourites too well; he had a certain image and now he’s coming across like a neurotic drama queen.

  17. Meme says:

I love Charlie and he’s going to become Big movie star and remain the sweet kind man he is. Plus he’s hotter than hot and soooooooo handsome.

  18. jinni says:

I wonder if he’s saying all of this because now he has a rep for dropping out of movies and it’s hurting his big budget movie career chances. Because one would think after all of this time he’d move on, but he keeps banging away and coming up with new excuse after new excuse for why he left and it all looks like a desperate attempt to appease someone that maybe angry at him for dropping out of this film.

It all makes me wish that this movie is a massive hit and gets good review for Jamie in particular and I say this as someone who isn’t even a fan of these books.

  19. Pager90 says:

Charlie is smoking hot. That Shades film may make a bit of money, but he will be happy he didn’t do it in the end.
He’ll be just fine career wise in the long run.
The Shades film seems cheesy. IMO

    Gawd he’s sooo gorgeous.

  20. Tig says:

It is curious to me that he can’t quit talking about it- even if asked, how hard is it to say “scheduling conflicts” and move on. As opposed to this compulsive need to over-explain? If he’s your cup of tea, well and good. I think Jamie D will handle the press tour for FSOG much better than Charlie would have done.
OT- what a nice meaningless post and discussion after all the too sad and too true comments surrounding the Ray Rice situation yesterday.

    • Al says:

He is a very thoughtful and courteous man. I should say a gentleman. If you find the chance to watch an interview w/ him, you’ll get what I mean. I think some people here are being quite unfair. He gets asked these Qs, and he politely answers each and every time not to come off as a jerk. In fact, some other news source asked him the same Q this week, and he refused to answer this time, saying he has already talked about this issue ‘ad nauseum’.
He is just being the decent man he is.

  21. Bridget says:

I don’t know that I would say he can’t stop talking about 50SoG -he’s doing his press for SOA so he was probably asked about 50, as it was a big story.

And I totally believe that he clashed with EL James about the story. In order to get the movie rights the studio pretty much gave James the moon, including a lot of final say.

Too bad, because Hunnam is just HOT. That man is sex on a stick. However, I will have to avoid this thread for the rest of the day because I’m not all the way through SOA and for some reason people dont care about posting spoilers.

  22. Penelope says:

God he’s hot. I’m glad he didn’t do it but I wish he’d just STFU about it already–it makes him just a little *less* hot when he’s revealing all this information.

And it looks like he’s fake-tanned his face. STOP THAT!

  23. Miss M says:

I almost had a nervous breakdown when my man signed up for that mess…

  24. tealily says:

I love love love Charlie. And I think he is still talking about this because he is still getting asked about it and still feels really badly about backing out. I’m so glad he’s not doing it, but it does seem like it will be a really good role for Jamie Dornan.

  25. Lurker says:

    Dear Charlie,

We’re all happy that you’re not in that hot mess. Just come over here, and we’ll snuggle and everything will be okay.

    Lurker

    • KatyD says:

I love this response it’s so cute.

He’s probably worried about his rep and he doesn’t want to appear rude or unprofessional, which is a big deal in Hollywood (see Katherine Heigl). It can be a career killer if people think you are flighty like that.

On a personal note, I have a neighbor who met him as a business acquaintance (showed me pics he took of Charlie with him on his phone), and he said the guy was a really nice person. I wish I could spend a day “on the job” with my neighbor and meet celebs, but my neighbor said, “Absolutely not!” Too bad. 🙁

  26. joe spider says:

Well with someone with personal experience of these things it really p****s me off when I see someone just lightly throw in “I had a nervous breakdown” in a situaton like this.

No you didn’t Charlie, you either had a change of heart (unprofessional) or at worst got in a temporary “anxiety state” about scheduling.

Please note Charlie that your recent co-star went straight from OLLA to TTDW without a day in between then went from Coriolanus to CP with about 2 days in between on another continent.

And a really difficult time is when you are OUT of work and can’t pay the bills.

    Rant over.

    • xpreson says:

Not to sound too harsh here, but do you know if he had any other personal circumstances going on at that time n his life? who are we to say a nervous break down can’t be had over being over worked, or making the mistake of taking on a job you can’t deliver? Yes the actor’s life sounds ideal and not as tough as some other people like you mentioned..out of a job, debts, family etc. but anyone, can have a break down over any issue. Specially actors with their insecure nature. We all have an emotional bucket and when it fills up, it spills. I for one will try not to judge someone I don’t know or rant about them.

  27. delorb says:

This guys is milking more press for NOT being in the movie as the guy who is actually IN the movie. I think that when you pass on a movie role, that you should stop talking about that movie role. But hey, that’s just me.

  28. Juls says:

Travis Fimmel. Vikings. Dontblike blonds but he is even more of an exception than CH.

  29. Al says:

At this point, CH is doing a better PR tour for that movie than Jamie and Dakota combined. I think it is rather ironic. Nobody has praised that character more than Charlie. Including Dornan.

SIDE NOTE: This week the very dashing David Gandy gave an interview about his new underwear line for M+S. He was asked if it was true that they asked him to audition for Fifty. He said yes, it was true but he didn’t do it, because he thought the book was ‘so badly written’. Cut to a few days later, he was pictured with EL James @ that GQ event where that rotund Kardashian won that stupid award. EL James was grinning like a tool next to him.

I thought it was a killer. Thank God both Hunnam and Gandy are so astonishingly hot, that they can get away w/ this type of stuff.

  30. MellyM says:

Sometimes, if you feel unprepared, you should just try and do your very best.
I think, Charlie REALLY has this mixture of soft and hard that screenwriter Kelly Marcel talked about (Celebitchy in August).
In that trailer, Jamie looked like the unexperienced young student, not Dakota, lol. I am not going to see the movie since the story is so stupid, but I guess I would have wanted to watch Charlie.

  31. Anath Pariah says:

As a deviant little masochist, I’d be the world’s biggest hypocrite if I was morally outraged by Fifty Shades of Grey, but something about these stories just really make me sick.
