Angelina Jolie plays a ‘former dancer’ with bangs in the 1970s in ‘By the Sea’

jolie by the sea

Ooooooooh!!! Entertainment Weekly got an exclusive on Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s new film, By the Sea, including the first three images from the production. This ^^ is the best one. Angelina Jolie is playing someone tragic, sullen, cheekboney and bangsy. Brad Pitt is playing someone with a mustache, bored with sleeping with his hot wife. It’s set in the 1970s. La Jolie is a former dancer. YES. You can see more photos here, at EW. EW also got more details about the script, which was written by Jolie.

Although Pitt and Jolie just tied the knot themselves on Aug. 23 after a nearly decade-long relationship, this is how they’ll be spending their honeymoon—exploring a marriage that’s collapsing on itself.

Set in France during the mid-1970s, Jolie plays Vanessa, a former dancer, and Pitt is her husband Roland, an American writer. As they travel the country together, they seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper (Niels Arestrup) and hotel owner (Richard Bohringer, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.)

“I chose to set By the Sea in the 1970s, not only because it is a colorful and alluring era, but because it removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey,” Jolie said in a statement to EW.

In other words, it was a time when it was still possible to escape your everyday life without so many methods of staying connected or distracted. In this story, she says a different kind of social networking takes place. As a kind of found-family is assembled amid these maritime dwellers, histories are shared—some joyful, some mournful—and the couple are swept up in their stories, changing the way they look at each other.

[From EW]

EW says that By the Sea already started production last week, and will film through mid-November. Jolie compiled an interesting set of behind-the-scenes people too, which EW details as: “editor Patricia Rommel (The Lives of Others); production designer Jon Hutman (Unbroken); and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). The executive producers are Chris Brigham (Inception), Holly Goline (Unbroken) and Michael Vieira (Unbroken).” Holly Goline has been with Angelina for like 15 years, right? And Goline started out as Angelina’s assistant? That’s pretty cool.

I didn’t know this film was set in the 1970s. That’s surprisingly good news, mostly because Angelina loves a ‘70s vibe. Her default style is very ‘70s, her jewelry line came straight out of the ‘70s and she looks so much like her mother in the 1970s. Sigh… I hope this film is decent. At the very least, I hope that Angelina Jolie forces herself to dance. Or better yet, Brad and Angie can dance together. Again. Like they did in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Another movie that I’m not going to watch.

  2. savu says:

So pumped to see her on screen. AND WITH A FRENCH ACCENT. Yaaaaas. God I fangirl so hard for her.

    • Meme says:

She can’t do a decent accent because she’s not a good actress. Her fame is based on her face, which looks rather strange in that photo. That looks like one of MJ’s noses.

  3. LAK says:

I thought their chemistry was off the charts in MR & MRS SMITH, but the dancing was so stilted. No heat there.

    • Ag says:

yeah, their chemistry in that movie was super hot. dancing – very meh. not everyone can pull that off.

    • Artemis says:

I’m looking forward to seeing it but yeah, no dancing please, girl doesn’t got the moves.

      • lower-case deb says:

aha! reminds me of her dorktastic dancing to Bruno Mars during thr MiR gala
        http://youtu.be/ax_OwNABdEU

not so bad when it’s choreographed like Tourist or Mr-Mrs

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @Artemis …

The description says ‘FORMER’ dancer. I doubt very much we’ll be seeing Angie dance. They both laughed but the fact that neither could dance, even after some lessons for the tango scene. It’s just not their thing. 🙂

      • Artemis says:

        @lcd

Nice video. ‘White people dancing’ is always funny to see 😀

        @Emma
Last time I checked, former dancer means you stopped doing it as an occupation. Meaning, FORMER dancers still know the technical and theoretical abilities to dance for leisure if a severe injury isn’t involved. Nobody just stops dancing all together. We’ll see how their story goes.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Artemis, who wrote: “Last time I checked, former dancer means you stopped doing it as an occupation. As you say, unless they’ve suffered an injury. I just don’t think a script Angie has written will have her actively dancing, because she and Brad made such a big joke out of their ‘lack’ of dancing ability. That’s all.

    • FLORC says:

Really? I thought they had great chemistry. Or maybe I only think that since both Brad and Angie on their own are smoldering. That combined it was still hot if not for the mutual chemistry.

The movie will be good. Not good enough to get me to sit down in a theatre full of people chewing with their mouths open, tweeting on their phablets, and talking above whispers, but will get it on demand.
      (I loathe the cinema)

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

FLORC–you’re just like my mom. The last movie theater she went to was when the Bee movie came out (the crappy Jerry Seinfeld animated one)….and she went to sleep within ten minutes. I was jealous, because even at that age, I HATED the movie.

But my mom HATES the theater. She likes to be able to pause it whenever she wants AND not pay money for food/drinks.

  4. Abbott says:

But, but we’ve all seen Dame Angie dance. T.Swizzle in a full body brace dances better. It’s Angelina’s only flaw.

    • BNA FAN says:

I remember Angie saying she knows how to dance because she has had training in dancing.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@BNA, who wrote: “I remember Angie saying she knows how to dance because she has had training in dancing.”

She said she took ‘Ballroom dancing lessons,’ but that does’t mean she was ‘good’ at it. Many people take dancing lesson and still can’t dance. Jane Fonda had classical ‘training’ and Zoe Saldana had classical ‘training,’ but Angie just took some ballroom dance lessons. You saw her in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” … did that look like ‘training’ to you?

    • FLORC says:

What are you refering to Abbott to say she can’t dance? She’s dances a few times on camera and quite well. Not really candid, but danced to fit the scene and character.

    • Meme says:

“Dame” is not a title she can use. It’s symbolic…she isn’t British.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Meme, who wrote: “Dame” is not a title she can use. It’s symbolic…she isn’t British.”

Why, then, does the Queen insist on conferring the title, for males and females? Wouldn’t she of all people know better?

  5. Loopy says:

I hope this really is decent, because Mr & Mrs Smith was terrible. I think their chemistry will be interesting to see this go around.

  6. Godwina says:

She is SO 70s, you’re right! I always think of the stunning 70s actresses in Euro genre films like Maud Adams, Edwige Fenech, etc etc—pretty much anyone who graced a Bava or Leone film back it the day. It was all big hair, big cat eyes, big cheekbones, and super thin body. She has that look. Like she walks through life to the tune of an old Morricone score.

  7. Aj says:

They look hotl Chemistry is still there.

  8. Kali says:

Good god, even with that stupid HD makeup powder fail, she still is ridiculously beautiful. Can’t wait to see this movie, it looks really really interesting so far!

  9. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

For Halloween this year, Angelina Jolie could dress up as Rachel from Friends and the kids could wear mini Rachel wigs. Brad could be Ross. Maddox could be Joey. (Pax doesn’t seem a ‘friends’ kind of kid) Zahara could be Monica and Shiloh Chandler Bing if she likes.

    • Angelina's too beautiful says:

First off, the world knows that Angelina is way too gorgeous to be that character, but Jolie’s incredible acting skills prove she can pull off anything. You must not be a parent, because no kids that age would know or care about that show. Heck, I was alive back then and I don’t care about it. Perhaps you’re trying to be humorous, but, much like the ever lame, hypocritical, rude old TV actress you are championing, it’s just not funny.

      • gigoloaunt says:

        Cringing at this comment.

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

I can neither sit through an episode of Friends nor that boring Smith movie where Brad and Angelina met. Mother and Child – with Annette Bening and Naomi Watts – is worth watching for more than five minutes – both Bening and Watts are far superior actresses to Aniston and Jolie.

      • doofus says:

wow…if I give you a dollar, will you go out and buy a sense of humor? sheesh. lighten up, huh?

For what it’s worth, Mitch, it gave me a chuckle.

  10. Toot says:

    Looking forward to seeing this.

  11. MrsBPitt says:

I loved, loved their dancing scene in Mr. and Mrs. Smith….when Brad looks straight into the camera, when Angie is shimmying down, and he has that awesome smirk…I love that movie, and I can’t wait for this new one….it actually sounds really interesting…

  12. Gina says:

She looks just like Sophia Loren in that first picture. That’s not a bad thing, but I swear her whole face has changed.

  13. lower-case deb says:

Malta turns out to be an interesting working-moon for Angelina. not only her film career but her UN career too.

    http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20140915/local/update-2-jolie-pleads-for-european-nations-to-contribute-to-rescue-efforts-in-the-mediterranean.535814

and much respect to Malta for helping the refugees.

  14. Kim1 says:

I can’t wait to see the makeup sex when the couple reconnects at the end.

  15. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Seriously–I thought I was the only one who was happy/excited to see Holly Goline’s name on there. She moved up. And I googled her name–apparently she quit as Angelina’s personal assistant in 2010ish…….

But I was WONDERING why Brad had that 70s porno ‘stache and hair….now we know.

    • lower-case deb says:

Roland, the 70s washed up porno writer?
      has a ring to it.
and fits right in with the hot scenes the tabs have been telling us.

  16. Talie says:

I love that she’s making a glamorous movie. I bet she was also influenced by that famous W shoot they did together — getting shades of that here. The two of them never looked better than they did in that shoot and, of course, in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

    • Al says:

I guess this will be the movie The Tourist should or could have been.

Lovers who became strangers getting reconnected in a glamorous European setting and have glamorous sex… that sort of thing.

      • Janet says:

It’s got to be better than The Tourist. I like Angie and I like Johnny Depp — at least before he became a caricature of himself — but together they were an unmitigated disaster. Zero chemistry.

  17. Katherine says:

I’m not sure why we are assuming Jolie’s character is French. Unless it’s because Brad is identified as an American and Angelina isn’t.

  18. Sway says:

Looks stupid. But yeah, I’ll probably watch it.

  19. Kim1 says:

Yeah I thought we would see pics of them filming or more candid pics of the family. All we have are the blurry yacht pics.

  20. black orchid, says:

sounds a bit dull actually , couldnt they have done something like the Original Sin?

  21. pnichols says:

I pray she doesn’t dance. She moved around like a broom in M&MS. she’s got no rhythm.

  22. lisa2 says:

Looking forward to this. I like that they gave the description of the film. I’m sure the tabloids would have created some silliness.

I also like that they try to look different in every role. No two quite the same. They have great chemistry and that to me is undeniable.

The film sounds interesting and something neither has done before.

  23. Chris2 says:

Lookin forward to this! The 70s were my favourite decade, and B&A do suit it well. If Brad’s wedding hair was for this film, then that settles it. Rrawwrrr.

  24. illap says:

Her character’s look/makeup reminds me of Christine (Changeling) meets Fox (Wanted) meets (Elise). Angie has among the best if not THE BEST posture of anyone I’ve ever seen, much less Hollywood actresses. She moves like a dancer… Denzel said that she moves like liquid and I agree. For those who don’t like her dancing on film, I think she moves/dances very well for what the character is supposed to do. Jane Smith was into frisking, not dancing, but Elise could waltz beautifully. Same thing for Brad- John Smith was supposed to be a suburban dork drunk on Tequila sexing up so hottie, but Paul in River Runs Through It is a wild child that can dance with skill. In “real” life they seem far more interested in touching, swaying & leaning on each other than actual dancing. Both have shown they are very athletic/coordinated on screen and off and like daredevilish stuff…

  25. MAP says:

Totally superficial: I don’t like the size of her new boobs. She’s so thin and they look porn-starry to me. I would have gone with a nice B. Those look like busty C’s (especially compared to her thin frame).

    • BNA FAN says:

@Map, Why are you talking about her boobs? Very strange comparing her movie BTS to her boobs size, I don’t get what you are saying.

    • Dingo says:

They are a bit big but I think the “problem” is the height off them. They look a bit playboyish, I the doctor could have made them look a bit more natural.

      • Ennie says:

Again, they won’t look natural because she does to have mammary tissue left so soften the implants. She does not seem to mind, why should we?

  26. Micki says:

I’ll watch it .I’m curious to compare the “now” chemistry with the 10-y-old one.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That IS the question. I’ve read four or five diff. articles about this movie, and that’s what everyone wants to know.

But then again–I think it would be very different since they’re not meant to be happy with each other. And I don’t think (based on the summary) that they will be together/happy at the end….so I wonder how that changes things.

  27. The Original G says:

I know we’ve seen that jacket before on pics. It looks like it’s inside out?

  28. Anon says:

Reminder to those who grew up in the seventies what social media has done to communication…and to the younger ones, this is how you communicate, period. Put down your devices. This will be the lesson of the movie. Angelina sees problems where there are problems before many do. jmho.

  29. anna says:

Has there been a non white person in any of her films yet? You’d think with children as diverse as her own, she’d want to contribute to a world that reflects them just a little bit.

    • angela says:

There were few people of color involved in the Yugoslav war. None, probably.

    • lower-case deb says:

lovely Chiwetel was in Salt, he so fine.

    • Ennie says:

She directed one or two short documentaries before, so I bet there are some in them. She does not have much say in the actors chosen otherwise when she has been hired as an actress, but of course, in the LC movies, the bone collector, of course in Foxfire, Original Sin set in Cuba, made in Mexico, beyond Borders, Alexander, Wanted, etc.

      .
you mean in the 2 movies she has directed?
one (ITLOBAH) about the Yugoslavian war? not likely…
the other one (UNBROKEN) about WW2 set in the Pacific- Japan area?? not likely either, probably some soldiers hailed from diverse backgrounds, but even so, not all Latin americans look “ethnic”, but I assure you that there will be lots of Asians/Japanese. Is that enough?

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

One of the supporting characters in Unbroken (a guard) is a Japanese pop/rock singer….I can’t remember his name.

      • lower-case deb says:

imdb notes that she has 4 directorial credits, the first one being a documentary, A Place in Time, she did with some of her past co-stars, like Djimon Hounsou (who also acted in Lara Croft Cradle of Life) and Bai Ling (who also acted in Sky Captain).

Unbroken features Ken Watanabe and Miyavi alongside many Japanese actors.

plus BTS and ITLOBAH, that’s the only 4 directorial titles to her name.

      • Ennie says:

@VC: Miyavi. I haven’t watched perform in videos but he is interesting looking. The Japanese music and art scene is a world unto itself!

    • TheRealMaya says:

What a passive aggressive comment trying to make it look like Angelina is racist.

The whole world knows she is the opposite of racist and as several people have already pointed the “non white” people she has collaborated with in the past and present.

    • Ennie says:

OOOPS! I forgot, in Maleficent her own children Pax and Zahara added diversity to the movie in the Christening scene, non counting that the movie itself presented a diversity of creatures which were in danger (they would represent what was “different” to humans, IMO).

@TRMaya I think the poster got served, your post is right at the point!

  30. BeepingSleauty says:

Why am I reminded of “Local Hero” from 1983?

  31. Laura says:

I am definitely going to watch this movie!
But I’m also one of those people that would watch an entire movie of AJ eating cereal or watching grass grow. LOL!

  32. Paige says:

    I’m excited to see this.

  33. TheRealMaya says:

Look at that chemistry just from few pictures. Just imagine how smoking it is going to be in the actual movie😍

Trust Angelina to write and direct something different instead the present movies with superheroes, actions & guns. This movie has the scope to bring out the raw real acting talent of Angelina and especially Brad. Maybe after this movie the Brad slammers will finally admit that Brad is one of the best actors around Hollywood.

PS: just imagine the look on the haters faces if this movie wins lots of Oscars🙊

  34. Esmerelda says:

From the plot, it sounds like a boring Antonioni / Cassavetes mashup.
And the latest Franco would have been perfect for the Roland role… poor Brad.

    • Meme says:

Absolutely. Nothing original here. I’m sure she’ll do a sex scene with Brad to ensure people see this movie. Who releases photos from a film that barely started filming? What next? The daily rushes?

  35. hilda says:

    is that a pornstache ?

  36. Heather says:

Will definitely have to see this! I agree, it will be interesting to compare MM Smith with the chemistry here. I don’t think that photo of Angie is doing her any justice there. She looks skeleton-like in the face and gaunt and older than she is. She was SO beautiful in the MM Smith era…..

    http://angelina-place.com/picture/displayimage.php?pid=3169

  37. Nene says:

Perhaps the chemistry will be just as hot but in a more disfunctional way! Geez, the pics from Mr and Mrs Smith compared to the one above- just wow. She’s really lost a lot of the fat in her face, and not in a good way. That comes with aging but no doubt it’s also as a result of weight loss and a more waxy look from Botox. Still she has a really pretty face!

  38. tracking says:

This is an interesting choice. Seems like it could be really strong or a complete flame-out, not likely to be anywhere in the middle.

  39. Irishae says:

I think it’s going to be a terrible vanity project, but I’m fine with being wrong if it turns out great (and if Angelina can actually do an accent). Neither a fan nor hater. I’m sure it will at least be a pretty movie to look at.

  40. maddelina says:

I do theatrical makeup for live theatre and hers is just awful in the above photo. Waaay overdone!

  41. norah says:

Funny how quickly the excitement of seeing a few pics of both of them ends up by negative comments of her looks etc her makeup etc

  42. TOPgirl says:

I can’t wait to see this movie! No matter how poor her makeup might seem in this photo, she will always be beautiful! Brad is so damn lucky!!!

  43. Katherine says:

This will be nothing like Mr and Mrs Smith. That was a light hearted action flick. This is about darker emotions and a crumbling marriage. Perhaps the real tell of their acting abilities will be if they seem like they have little or no chemistry with each other since that seems more in keeping with the characters.

Angelina looks stunning. Very 1970s European chic. That all wore bangs and had that look.
