Taylor Swift is People Mag’s Best Dressed of 2014: good call or bad pick?

wenn21640852

People Magazine has released their Best Dressed List for 2014, and OMG is it bland. Really, ridiculously bland. Taylor Swift is this year’s best dressed lady. YES, that Taylor Swift. To be honest, I think Swifty’s style has greatly improved over the past year, especially since she moved to New York and she’s been doing the millennial Sex & the City thing, with lots of leggy photo-ops in short skirts and good shoes. She’s moved away from J.Mendel princess frocks in pastel colors for EVERY appearance, but let’s not pretend that “most improved” is the same as “best dressed.”

When the Style team gathered to choose the Best Dressed Star of the Year, one name kept coming up: Taylor Swift. She seems to have truly hit her style stride in the past 12 months, nailing every off-duty and red carpet look, whether it’s sweet separates or dazzling designer gowns like this Gucci Première design at the Grammys. And we’re not the only ones giving fashion props to the singer; model BFF Karlie Kloss tells PEOPLE, “She’s got great style. I need to take some notes from her!”

[From People]

You can see People’s Best Dressed package here. The list also includes Blake Lively (ugh), Diane Kruger (word, she’s got awesome style), Jennifer Lopez (she’s glam but there are issues), Emma Stone (I’m okay with that), Lupita Nyong’o (YES), Jessica Alba (basic), Rihanna (??), Emma Watson (???), Chloe Grace Moretz and Kiernan Shipka (she’s fab). I’m sorry, NO CATE BLANCHETT? Any best-dressed list that does not include La Blanchett is null and void. I also wonder why there’s only ONE woman in her 40s on this list. And what about the over-50 stylish ladies? You know who has great older-lady style? Helen Mirren.

    A Precious, Precious Pick

  2. Chem says:

The first picture proves the opposite.

  3. Tiffany27 says:

It’s People magazine so this pick is correct.

  4. mystified says:

I actually think People made an excellent choice.

    • wolfpup says:

At least Taylor is cuter than Kate Middleton! I don’t mean to be offensive (?) but Taylor’s look is far more interesting and fun. Kate, bless her heart, just isn’t into clothes, in my opinion, which is kind of confusing considering her rank, as well as considering the fun that Pippa puts into her look. I always enjoy looking at Taylor.

    • Chem says:

This must be promotion for her.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, I like her style too. She obviously puts a lot of effort into her outfits and I think she mostly pulls them off (the first romper being the exception because HELL NO.)

      • Betty says:

I totally agree. I love Taylor’s style–whether it’s retro or short skirts and leggy. I think Hailee Steinfeld, Leelee Sobieski, Tracee Ellis Ross and Krysten Ritter are also great dressers, whose fashion sense is oft overlooked.

  5. Etheldreda says:

”I’m sorry, NO CATE BLANCHETT? Any best-dressed list that does not include La Blanchett is null and void.”

Romper aside, I really like Taylor’s style, and it helps that she’s got the perfect body for showing off clothes.

But yeah, any list which leaves Cate the Great out isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

    • Shannon1972 says:

Agree 100%. I love Cate, but she doesn’t sell magazines like Taylor Swift. If they wanted a young pop star, Rhianna is at least sartorially interesting – but Taylor is a safe, non-controversial choice.
I don’t look to people as an authority on style anyway…if this was Vanity Fair, there would be a fashion world revolt. 🙂

    • Sullivan says:

Completely agree with everything you said. It’s a travesty that Cate isn’t on the list AND Taylor has great style with the perfect body to showcase it.

  6. Anna says:

Jane Fonda is an AMAZING dresser Sexy, appropriate, fun!

  7. jane16 says:

The blue onsie is ridic, but I think she usually has great style.

  8. Jem says:

I would call her the best dressed of 1954, but whatevs. Yes, she is very well dressed. Not very interesting, and perhaps a bit psycho, but yes, she dresses very nicely.

  9. Shannon1972 says:

She’s very pretty, and I appreciate that she has developed a personal style, but she’s nowhere near best dressed. However, her face on the cover will surely move magazines off the racks.

    Way to boost sales, People!

  10. Abigail says:

Yes to Diane, Lupita, Rihanna and Emma W. Jessica Alba has great casual style, but she’s not special on the red carpet. Blake is super cheesy, and Taylor Swift always looks so contrived. All of her clothes are so over-thought they look like costumes. She totally lacks the spontaneous, somewhat effortless vibe that I think marks great style.

  11. J says:

    ” Rihanna (??)”

Not sure what the question marks are for. Obviously Riri’s style is not for everyone but she has her own unique style and is tremendously influential in the world of fashion.

    • Marty says:

The thing about Rihanna is that she can wear things that would look absolutely ridiculous on other people, but she slays when she wears it. Case in point that amazing see-through dress she wore earlier in the year.

  12. Eileen says:

You want to know the people that deserve style awards? Those who aren’t multimillionaires or billionaires with stylists and assistants and people who clean their own clothes and look fierce in the short time between alarm clock going off and being at work on time,or school, etc.

  13. Neelyo says:

Congratulations to her publicist and stylist!!!

I dont’ believe for a second she puts her outfits together herself.

  14. taxi says:

Her figure is great, she has some good dresses, but side-draped forehead cover never looks good. Bangs are better than that. Connie Britton does that same too-low side part. It is not a Veronica Lake look at all – just makes them look as if their foreheads are proportionately too low.

  15. Alyce says:

I actually agree with most of their list. l’d add Nina Dobrev and maybe even Zoe Kravits ( I think she actually pulls off the bohemian look). Diane Kruger is the best, I’m glad she made the list!

  16. TheCountess says:

I don’t think she’s a terrible pick, VMA diaper get-up aside. It’s nowhere near the disgrace that naming Adam Levine as ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ was 😉

  17. Nicole says:

I dig watching her street style and I’d put her in the top 10 but number 1?!

I disagree with the ???s for RiRi – she’s a supermodel taking wild chances and hitting some of them out of the park.

    • sally says:

I think RIhanna is so brave with her styles. She doesnt give a F*ck about what others think. Prim example of dressing for yourself and not others.

  18. Angie says:

Where is Keira Knightley?!? She has a lovely style, I doesn’t like all of her clothes – she tends to go for princesses dresses with a lot of lace or tulle – but she is a clothe horse and has effortless style. My favorite are Lupita, Diane and Keira. I’m ok with the two Emma but they can be hit or miss.

They also forget Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington. Charlize in a dior gown has more allure than most of these bitches XD. Michelle Dockery, Zoe Saldana, and Elle Fanning could also be good options, imo. And there is no Kate Bosworth, ha! Poor Kate, at this point wearing pretty clothes is what keeps her relevant. And it’s weird there is no Jennifer Lawrence. I think her style is terrible – she is not a good fit for Dior – but she is the kind of actress people magazine likes to cover (America’s new sweetheart).

I’m not surprised by the absence of La Blanchett, it’s PEOPLE magazine not vogue or vanity fair. This magazine is not going to look after the actresses who can pull of fashion forward looks. So there is no Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchett, but bland celebrities like Taylor, Blake or Jessica are on the list. I doubt their stylists are losing sleep over these kind of lists XD.

    • Janet says:

Yes to Taylor Swift, Emma Washington and Lupita N’yongo. No to everybody else.

Zoe Saldana? Please. Every time I see her on the red carpet I wonder if she got lost on the way to a Halloween party.

Kerry Washington has two different styles: Olivia Pope and un-Olivia Pope. Her Scandal wardrobe is flat-out fabulous. I literally drool over her white trench coats. (One big exception to her Scandal outfits was that black/white top she wore in the last trimester of her pregnancy which made her look like a molting penguin.) Her style as herself isn’t all that great.

La Lupita — OMG I want her skin so bad. There isn’t a color in the world she can’t wear.

  19. lucy2 says:

I like a lot of the pieces Taylor wears, but this reeks of PR and trying to sell magazines. I do love Kiernan’s style, it’s always nice and age appropriate. JLO??? She’s always so costumey and overdone, which is a shame because she’s very pretty and doesn’t need all the gimmicks.
    No Blanchett? Insane.

    • FingerBinger says:

It’s definitely PR for Taylor since she has an album coming out. As for People a “controversial” best dressed pick will get a lot of hits to their site. So it’s a win win for everyone.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

JLO’s fashion, to me, always seems SO desperate. Maybe it’s because I’m reflecting her dating choices back onto her–but she always seems like she’s DESPERATELY trying to prove that she’s still hot.

  20. dc4b says:

Her red carpet style is pretty whatever but I absolutely adore her personal style/everyday clothing! If there’s one celeb’s closet I’d love to raid, it’s Swifty’s!

  21. Anon says:

At this point, Taylor seems like she plays dress up…goes out to pose for the paps. Girl needs to remember not to look at the camera so she’s not so obvious.

  22. Janet says:

She annoys the bejesus out of me for some reason, but I have to give her her props. I have never seen her make a fashion mis-step on the red carpet. That silver mesh dress is to die for.

  23. luana says:

I agree with La Blanchett, she should be here instead of…mmmh …Jlo, or Rihanna. Another woman over 40 with great syle? Robin Wright. Even if her everyday style has become very bohemian and “I don’t give a shit about dressing up”, her red carpet style is perfection. She’s not missing one point since many years now. It’s classic, sophisticated and sexy. And don’t let me start about her Claire Underwood onscreen style. The bitch is rocking it!

  24. Chinoiserie says:

I think she is a good choice. She has a unique style that suits her.

  25. AJ says:

People got it right. Taylor has been looking sexier than ever lately, and always looks amazing. She’s got the body of a supermodel, so clothes look great on her. And her confidence has improved tremendously over the years. Taylor’s “new Pop era” has just begun, so I expect alot of interesting looks from her in the near future as she continues to experiment and try new things.

  26. Pager90 says:

Taylor is a beautiful lady and she has worn some beautiful gowns but …

Cate Blanchette is so amazingly stylish ,she could throw her shoe on the floor and have more style than most.

    “People”should change it’s name to “People-Kiss-Celebrities-Ass-Magazine! “
