Tom Hiddleston commands love, respect & bromance wherever he goes

tommy1

Tom Hiddleton begins filming I Saw the Light very, very soon. Immediately after wrapping on High Rise more than a month ago, Tommy began an intensive process of transforming into Hank Williams. This was achieved by basically putting him with country musician Rodney Crowell. Tommy apparently lived with Rodney throughout September and Rodney oversaw parts of Tom’s work to become Hank Williams. Rodney explained his lovely month with Hiddles in a Facebook post. This post radiates bromance, man-love, whatever you want to call it. Think about this: I would love to see a documentary about a posh English actor going to live with a country music dude in Tennessee. THAT would be a good movie. Here’s Crowell’s post:

During the month of September 2014, our house in Tennessee became the base camp for Tom Hiddleston’s steady transformation into Hank Williams. I’d been hired by a film company—whose vision of shining a gritty light on the life and times of Hank Williams piqued my interest no end—to produce the music and assist their leading man in finding his way into the heart of one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time.

The classically trained British actor arrived in Nashville on the fourth day of the month and the very next day climbed on a tour bus bound for Michigan and the Wheatland Music Festival, his traveling companions Claudia, myself, and a four-piece band consisting of Jerry Roe, Byron House, Pat Buchannan and Steve Fishell. Just minutes before taking part in an afternoon workshop with Sarah Jarosz, whose permission I had sought first, I asked Tom if he’d like to join us onstage and sing “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” a Hank Williams song I’d heard him practicing on the bus. I was surprised when he said yes and skillfully performed the tune before what must have been 1500 people. Later that night, with my band on the main stage, and with very little urging from me, he rendered a joyful version of “Move It On Over.” Afterward, brimming with delight, he admitted, rather boyishly, that he’d never in his life performed with a band and had loved it.

On a typical day in September, I watched him sit for a wardrobe fitting, read through four hours worth of key scenes with the director and leading lady, spend another two hours with a dialect coach, and then, in order to lose the weight needed to look Hank Williams gaunt on screen, run seven wicked miles over hilly Tennessee terrain. With those chores done, he’d then commit to six more hours of singing, over and over again, a very hard to master song like ”Lovesick Blues.” And then, when he finally unlocked the mystery of yodeling the blues, hillbilly style, and was treated to a playback of his performance responded by saying “I can do it better, let me go again.” Then came a late dinner, wolfed down before giving in to a few hours sleep. After nearly a month spent collaborating with this gifted artist, I’m as respectful of the man’s work ethic as I’m mystified by his transformational skills. Without a doubt, the filmmakers chose the right actor for the job.

Rodney

[From Rodney Crowell’s Facebook]

Aw. That’s so sweet. Rodney sounds like he’s gone Full Dragonfly. I’m trying to work it out – Tommy basically spent every waking hour for a month working on becoming Hank Williams. Hours and hours and hours. And it didn’t even occur to me that Tommy would have to LOSE weight to become Hank Williams. Tom is already a skinny beanpole – I hope he doesn’t have to lose too much weight. And it’s nice that Tommy works so hard. For real. His dedication is impressive.

I always liked Rodney Crowell. He’s very talented and I was saddened when he divorced from Roseanne Cash.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I was saddened when he cancelled his performance at the bluegrass festival I attended a week ago.

      • icerose says:

but it was for Tommy so please forgive him

      • Lilacflowers says:

Oh, all is forgiven. The festival was great and we had lots of fun. I’ve seen Rodney before and probably will again.

      • jammypants says:

You’ll get your chance Lilac. Dragonfly mating calls work too.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well, I am slowly making my way through The Avengers cast. Sat near Mark Ruffalo at Fenway last week, adding to sitting behind Chris Evans at a Celtics game. I’ll probably have to finally attend Wimbledon for Tom.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Tommy dear, the hair looks like you’re auditioning for a biopic of Bello Nock or a sequel to There’s Something about Mary.

We can add Rodney Crowell to the growing list of men smitten by Tom along with GDT, Jim Beaver, Luke Evans, Mark Ruffalo.

I’m still worried about he director of this film even though Tom seems to be giving it his all.

    • Intro Outro says:

@Lalic, hear hear. Hiddleston and Crowell seem to be giving their all to musical/personality aspect, I’m also very glad about Olsen’s casting, but, even though I do not want to sound ill-meaning, Marc Abraham really seems the weakest link. Oh well. Lets hope the team’s joint effort and Abraham’s passionate and well-matured interest in the topic will pay off!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Intro Outro, this may be one of those films with great performances but iffy everything else and sometimes, those great performances can carry it through. There does seem to be a great deal of love, respect, and care being given and that makes me feel good about it.

And Tom, grow it out on the sides a bit more, thank you.

      • M.A.F. says:

Yes to everything you said. Take out the casting and the rest makes me question the film process/progress/outcome.

And he needs to stop killing the curls and shaving the side of his head.

    • t.fanty says:

ARE YOU CRAZY? The ruffled, slightly shaggy sex-hair is the best part.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I do like the ruffled, slightly shaggy sex-hair but in this picture, he really does look like he’s going for Bello Nock. And I really like the ruffled hair from Wallender, which had longer hair on the sides too, so he needs to grow it out more.

      • T.Fanty says:

I’ll take Bello Nock over the tight curly Europerm of Wallander any day of the week.

I like to imagine that Magnus, in his terrible jeans, just read that, paused with the phone in his hand, sighed, and rolled his eyes.

        MAGNUS 4 EVA!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@tfanty, Magnus would also play with the curls around his ears when he talked on the phone.

      • Intro Outro says:

Magnus Exaspersson. That’s the only way I refer to him.

      • joe spider says:

Tom’s Coriolanus hair was the best ever. More at the sides and a hint of curl.

      • 'P'enny says:

tom’s Coriolanus hair was nice, but too short.

top hair, not necessarily in particular order

        1. Magnus
        2. Thor 1 – [off set] where is tously but black.
        3. Prince Hal [wet]

and I’m partial to the Avengers extensions as well. ‘very partial’

      • Ava says:

Look at a picture of Hank Willims, without a hat, which is rare. It is long on top short sides. Tom has to have his hair right for “hank williams role” not for us…….link to hank’s picture without hat

        http://leeharrisonline.tripod.com/hankwilliams/

      • icerose says:

@Ava there are hardly any picture of older Hank without his hat but yes Tom’s current style could fit the bill with a dash of hairdressing. The have the same forehead structure which goes on forever.

      • Isadora says:

I have to admit I’m very very fond of long top, short sides hairstyles. I know the Hipsters ruined it a bit in the last years, but I can’t help it, I still find it hot… *sigh* And I’d take it over the Wallander hair any day (and night). But Prince Hal’s hair was great too.

(BTW Hank sr. looks young and kinda cute in that pic. I dig it.)

    • 'P'enny says:

      @lilacflowers

I’m going off you – you don’t like his curly Mr Whippy hair :-p I need to google Bello Nock.

I think the tweet pic of him in London showed his hair more ‘balanced’ 😀

I love the whippy curls on top.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Oh, ‘p’enny, do Google Bello. The comparison to that picture is apt. I like the side curls, which he plays with in interviews; bring those back.

      • 'P'enny says:

OMG!!! i wish i hadn’t that was shocking! what on earth did he put in his hair to make it stand up so straight? glue?

    • icerose says:

that is his bedroom hair-just think about running your fingers through his hair and playing with puppies and the side hair issues will be completely forgotton

@Lilac flowers I agree about the director but at least they have crossed al the t’s where Tom is concerned and all we can do is wait. It is beginning to get a bit of buzz out side the fandom as well. Rodney being impressed with it also gives me some faith

    • Lucretia says:

Googled Bello Nock (who I’ve seen perform with Big Apple Circus but had no clue about name) — Hilarious! Good call!

      • Lilacflowers says:

He probably would be great in a Bello Nock biopic since he’s so physical and great images of Tom joining the circus.

    • icerose says:

I just love it that they write long loving epistles similar to those Tom wrote about Josh,s script just not as wordy. Having said that Rodney is very articulate and puts his points across well.

  3. delorb says:

I’d watch that show about the Englishman who spent a year in Nashville.

    • icerose says:

so would I even if it was only a month but I would want all the drunk, tetchy moments that make it feel real and they better throw is some secret girlfriend moments

      • Green Eyes says:

I thought that Secret Girlfriend was Trademarked by Lordy Cumby. After the past few months I expect to see: “Secret Girlfriend ™, Benedict Cumberbatch. All Rights Reserved.”

For Lord Hiddles, might I suggest: “Super Secret Girlfriend and FWB™, Tom Hiddleston. All Rights Reserved.”

      • icerose says:

@ Green Eyes I will go with super secret sassy sexy girlfriend but FWB is way past it’s sell by date.
So it i is decided Benedict has the trade mark for Secret girlfriend and Tom is running with super secret sassy sexy girlfriend unless anyone can come up with some more superlatives starting with s

      • Lilacflowers says:

No secret girlfriend! ME! And I’m not being secret about it.

    • sigh((s)) says:

Ugh. Was he in Nashville? I have family there that I could have crashed with and done some proper stalking. Why does no one tell me these things? I could ride a bicycle beside him while he’s running and throw out Shakespearean quotes and air kisses for inspiration.
      GRRR. Misses all the fun….

  4. InvaderTak says:

Thank god they put him with a real country musician. Represent Rodney! We’re not all idiots. This makes me tenitively hopeful for this movie.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And Rodney’s comments should go a long way in calming many of those who were concerned about the casting. It won’t quiet the Hank3s of this world but it is a strong swipe at him and people with respect for the music will listen to Rodney.

      • delorb says:

A good way to quiet Hank III is to not give him any air. Pretend he doesn’t exist the next time he opens his mouth. Or better still, cut and paste all of the above.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@delorb, they have not been giving him air. Rodney, Tom, and the film’s director and producers have not responded to him.

      • jammypants says:

I love how classy the film team have been about the whole thing.

      • delorb says:

        @lilac,

I’m talking the fans. Hank opens his mouth and suddenly there are a gazillion posts about him. Clicks about him. Making the story about him. Just. Don’t.

      • jammypants says:

I’m going to agree with delorb. I don’t see much of it here besides the intial post on it, but elsewhere on the interweb, fans have been pretty vocal. It’s sort of a useless exercise in being offensive/defensive. It just keeps going round and round.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@delorb, in all the threads here, there have been very, very few people who have voiced any thing remotely resembling support for the views of Hank3 on any subject. I really don’t care what happens elsewhere. That man may have his fans but they are not necessarily the movie-going public.

    • icerose says:

I loved the boyishly admitted he had never sung with a band before and from the sounds of it was completely unrehearsed.
I had a look at the musicians CV because I got a wee bit of a thing about the lead guitarist and some of them have had long careers which embrace both country and rock. Very impressive.

@delorb it’s okay I told Hank 3 he had to stop via country music sight and he has been a good little boy since then. My impression is apart from his fans country artists have a pretty good idea of what he is like. He apparently was ranting about Waylon Jenning’s son prior to Tom.

      • Isadora says:

If that’s true, that he has never played with a band before and the whole thing was unrehearsed, then I’m not sure if I’m totally impressed or if Hiddles is just a completely crazy person. Anyone who has ever played an instrument and then together with a band knows the difference it can make. That’s … crazy. I would have had a panic attack there on stage.

      • icerose says:

@Isadora My thoughts as well. Having sung folk music and then found my self with a backing band was difficult especially harmony wise.
If he was singing unrehearsed in the afternoon and then on stage in the evening there would not have been a lot of wiggle room for an event like that for a rehearsal and the fact that Rodney did not know till after the event makes me think probably not. Maybe they talked through it before hand. To be fair he was playing an acoustic guitar which was not plugged so the guitar playing would have been muffled and he never lost the rhythm but he aced the singing.
        But yes crazy and ballsy.

  5. Leah says:

I know its mean but can’t help thinking that he reminds me of an elderly woman when he grins maniacally like that.

  6. Leah says:

That hurt me it was so sweet. I love bromance. I can believe he has to lose weight. Tom is slender and lean not skinny. Hank Williams was SKINNY. Tom probably has to drop at least 15 lbs. The more I read about what is happening with the movie the more at ease I feel.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And it is probably driving him crazy! He loves to eat.

    • icerose says:

Hank was mega skinny at the end -probably linked to booze and drugs-I think I read somewhere that towards the end he hardly ate but do not quote me on it.

      • 'P'enny says:

according to the BBC documentary he ate nothing but eggs in the last couple of years. Wouldn’t eat anything else.

    • lunchcoma says:

I can buy it too. Tom’s usually a healthy sort of skinny – the kind that makes it obvious it’s someone’s natural build. Toward the end of his life, Hank was likely getting most of his calories from alcohol, as some alcoholics do. That’s an ill-looking sort of thin, and I can see that Tom might need to lose a bit of weight to replicate it.

    • MissMary says:

He probably had to slim down from putting on some muscle for his last movie. so not necessarily diet and lose weight but maybe lengthen out the muscles? If that makes sense? get his more runner-like build back instead of the buff upper body (Well, buff for him).

    • Isadora says:

Yes, afterwards we might have to send Hiddles back to ‘p’enny for some good home-cooked meals. And sausages.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        And pudding!

      • 'P'enny says:

well I’ve just joined Weight Watchers! damn, I am trying to lose too. so if he comes to mine, the cupboards are bare except for WW products and Ryvita. He won’t be happy.

      • Isadora says:

He can come to my place instead, my area is rather famous for deep fried food and chocolate cakes. 😉 (good luck for your WW efforts, though! We should invent some motivating “Run with Hiddles” sports programme, complete with yoga practice, Earl Grey detox tea blend and recipes for healthy avocado & wholegrain mustard sandwiches)

      • icerose says:

@P’enny he will get Cambridge bars with me which is even worse

  7. Erinn says:

Now – mutliple times I’ve posted on here saying “I can’t stand this guy” and that “he’s always on, and it’s tiring” and things of that nature.

And then I watched him doing impressions. Of just about everyone. I no longer dislike the man. While I am not going to proclaim my love for him on rooftops, he certainly has won me over.

    • A. Key says:

      LOL, well that escalated quickly

      • Intro Outro says:

@A. Key, nooo, I remember Erinn’s comments on Hiddleston threads from some time ago, and I remember answering her as well 😀

@Erinn, now try to watch a film or two with him. Or better – if it doesn’t go against your principles and if you like gritty takes on Shakespeare – download NT Live’s Coriolanus 😉

      • MBP says:

Intro Outro – tell me, where might one find Coriolanus to download? For, erm, educational purposes of course 🙂

      • icerose says:

MBP I have a link that was still going a few days ago but I do not want to post it on an open sight, Any way I can direct message you.

      • Intro Outro says:

@MBP: hehe, The Pirate Bay or course 😉

      • Erinn says:

Intro Outro – I might have to do that. It’ll be my weekend project.

Kickass torrents is my favorite though, 😉

      • joe spider says:

make sure you get the NTL 2014 one and not the 2011 Fiennes film. Still on PB

      • Isadora says:

I don’t know if it’s still, but it was on google documents a while ago.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Welcome, Erinn.

    • icerose says:

lovely to see you here Erinn

    • jammypants says:

      Enjoy your stay.

    • gefeylich says:

Yeah, I’ve always found him tiresome too (and I haven’t seen the impressions, so, still tiresome). To me he’s the UK equivalent to Bradley Cooper (in more ways than one).

What’s worse, though, is that I’ve finally realized why Hiddleston rubs me the wrong way: he’s a RINGER for the young Steven Weber! I HATED Wings. And Weber.

  8. ncboudicca says:

Hiddleston must be at Clinton Master Level on the Charm-o-meter. He’s unstoppable.

  9. Miss M says:

    My sweet boy! 💝

  10. Lilacflowers says:

Can they somehow manage to squeeze him into an Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost thing in which most of his scenes are with Rosamund Pike? I really need that and after all these dark characters, he does too.

    • icerose says:

I have a feeling he will be trying to form his own band in the future,
Tom and the Wayward Boot Band with a revolving door of Luke ” just a wee bit of the family jewels” Evans, Jim “he’s my best friend” Beaver, Ewan “I like it bare” McGregor, Colin “just give me that Oscar” Firth, Sean “I shot the sheriff but they killed me anyway” Bean and Rodney “I tell it like it us” Crowell putting in guest appearances.
And duets will be with a revolving door of secret girlfriends so secret they come in disguised as cigarettes and bottles of booze, .

      • 'P'enny says:

what about his best friends? Chris and Benny

        ‘Bear necessities’ duet with Benny
‘I got a hammer’ with Chris

      • icerose says:

its a revolving boot so all suggestions welcome
How about Benny “bares all but his necessities ” Cumberbatche and “Tom where is my hammer ” Hemsworth

      • Isadora says:

        Perfect!

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’m fine with the band thing but I still need the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost comedy thing with Rosamund Pike, who seems like a great sport.

  11. browniecakes says:

TH love. It’s catchy. Like a Hank Williams tune.

  12. JoAnn says:

He just pulls whatever out of the laundry basket and throws it on doesn’t he? And the hair…Tom meet comb – comb this is Tom. He needs a woman to look after him. It is good he has a stylist help him at award shows and he cleans up real nice.

    • 'P'enny says:

I’m loving the scruff, but part of me is really wishing he pops up for Luke Evans Count Duckula prem this evening in a nice set of new clothes. A few of the High Rise cast are going, so it would be a great group photo opp.

I believe [due to tumblr] gossip he is back in London, back to LA, and now back in London again. gets around a bit our raggedy tom.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I will now be unable to refer to that movie as anything but Count Duckula, starring Luke Evans and Charles Dance. Thank you

      • Isadora says:

Count Duckula! Hahahaha… great! Who from High-Rise was there? Are there pictures? *wanna see*

Edit: Ah, found it. The dailyfail always delivers when it comes to my celebrity oogling urges. Sienna G wins the price for most horrible fashion choice on a red carpet lol.

      • Allegra says:

I don´t want to be mean but what hell Sienna G is wearing?
She is an attractive woman, so why she dressed like that?

      • Intro Outro says:

First reviews started coming and I’m not at all surprised they’re anything but stellar lol. The trailer looked as bad as the Blackhat one. And it’s actually something of a pity, because the very idea of Vlad Tepes aka Dracula’s origins story is not that bad. It could’ve for example touched upon the fact that he was a very cruel but at the same time very efficient “gospodar” (king). Maybe show him as scheming and proud, but at the same time a fervent patriot, and so arrogant that he’d think he can outwit any vampire overlords who are thirsting for his soul and land and conspire with his courtiers? I don’t know, so many (campy) ideas but instead it seems like we got an extremely bland and boring flick. I hope that Evans at least got a nice paycheck for it 😛

      • 'P'enny says:

My issue is that Dracula 2000 was such a good origin story [Gerard Butler] that I am not sure we were ready for another one. I think we are vampired out, TBH. However, I will still watch it.

    • icerose says:

I love his relationship with his laundry basket and lets face it with his curls the comb does not stand a chance but the man was born to sparkle in a suit. I saw him walk onto the stage for a q and A at he BFI and the first words that came into mind was “that man is by far the most elegant man I have ever seen”

      • sigh((s)) says:

He is quite elegant, isn’t he? Perfect description.

      • Allegra says:

        icerose:

        Lucky you!
Is it true that Tom is more handsome in person than in pictures or in movies?
It´s shame that he no longer uses gray jacket because this color suits him very well.
He looked great in this video from The Avengers premiere:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S7ufOPXxJ0

I wish I can read lips because I´m dying to know what the lady with back hair said to him.

      • icerose says:

@Allegra my impression was yes he was more handsome because it caught me by surprise.

    • joe spider says:

presumably he is growing it for the film, will be dyed very shortly.

    • Allegra says:

      Tom and his fashion choices:

He said: “As a child and as a teenager, I was uh… hopeless.”
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILVyN2gYNII&feature=youtu.be

And apparently Tom does not only own a yellow trouser but also a yellow jacket, as you can see in this pic:
      https://twitter.com/melmelika/status/515899057953583104

      • Isadora says:

        Haha, I’m blinded!

      • Lilacflowers says:

That looks like a running or bike jacket. Hideously bright colors so drivers can see you.

      • Isadora says:

I think it’s part of a ski or snowboard suit because the yellow pants looked like thermo trousers (and it’s something you might want to wear in cold Iceland). And yes, it’s always sensible to be easily seen on a piste or freeriding or something. Still blinding in normal circumstances. *g*

  13. Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, and as gushing as Jim Beaver’s Facebook postings and GDT’s proclamations at Comic Con.

    • icerose says:

yes -it does seem to be a bit contagious

    • Allegra says:

That was hilarious especially the part that GDT called him Tom F**ing Hiddleston.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, his parents probably spent time and care choosing William for a middle name only to have GDT change it to f**king.

      • joe spider says:

Actually they called him that so we could call him Twiddles.

William was his grandfather’s name and Thomas his great uncle’s.

        (Sad that I know this, aren’t I?)

      • Allegra says:

        joe spider:

It´s not sad because some fans like me didn´t know that.
        So thanks for this information.

      • icerose says:

wow did not know who he actually was named after.I actually did a geeky chart of his entire family going back to Lord Edmund Vestry and his brothers and their children etc. etc. using using the peerage register.
Did you know if you type into google search the descendants of Lord Edmund Vestey a picture of Loki comes up-how cool is that.

      • Lilacflowers says:

During one of the War Horse interviews, he talked about the great uncle and grandfather and his name. The great uncle died during World War I. The grandfather died either shortly before the filming of the movie or during the filming and he went to Scotland with his father to deal with his belongings and his father found and gave him the great uncle’s war medals and papers and he kept them with him during the filming.

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflowers One of Vestey’s direct descendants died in WW1 so I assumed he was alluding to that in the interview I saw because he was a bit vague about it. I did not know about the grandfather/great uncle on his dads side who was not part of the Vesty descendants. But it makes more sense.

      • Anne tommy says:

My daughter was sorting out her wedding list at a department store in Edinburgh, she’s a big fan of Tom, turns out the woman helping her sort was a Mrs. Hiddleston. No relation she said! Not quite what daughter had in mind with combination of “marriage” and “Hiddleston”!

Oct 2014 today…. One year and 29 days till Crimson Peak [or something like that] May have to put a counter on my desktop.
Hope you all saw the fun photos this week of Sir Sharpe and ipad on the mantle piece photo, and a co-actor reading Vanity Fait.
It was very good, love to know where it was leaked from.

      • Lilacflowers says:

But you have High-Rise and naked sunbathing before that.

      • 'P'enny says:

yeah, but I now I am a bit of traitor, but I keep thinking High Rise is going to be Luke Evan’s scene stealer and the naked sunbathing will be fudged.

so C/peak, for me, is going to be my next big full on – hiddles diva performance.

      • Intro Outro says:

Why do you think that Evans’ character will be the main focus of the film, ‘P’enny? I had the impression that it’s either mostly Laing or 3 main male chars that are POV chars, no?

      • Lilacflowers says:

I still think he’s going to make a cameo in Avengers.

      • 'P'enny says:

        @intro

i think that Luke’s character Wilder is the most interesting in the book, for me, when i read the book i i thought he was a complete nut, and i am really interested to seeing him on screen. I found Hiddles’ Laing character lacking is conversation through the book. A lot depends on the script writing, so we shall see. My assumptions are based on how i’ve interpreted the book.

@lilac – i have my doubts about avengers.

      • Intro Outro says:

@’P’enny, thanks for your perspective! I think he’s indeed lacking in conversation, but I also think that It’ll be very interesting to see how Hiddleston can act out such a non-verbal role. I hope they didn’t add too many conversations.

      • icerose says:

yes I loved the Vanity fair magazine

      • icerose says:

@Penny he lacks conversation but much of the story is told from his perspective so I am curious to see how the film puts that over. i do think both Irons and Evans have the more flamboyant roles but I would never under estimate Tom’s ability to steal a scene or even a film.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I think of the three main characters, Laing, although the quietest of the three, goes through the most transformation. Wilder is always wild and brutish. Royal is always arrogant with a sense of entitlement. Laing is in the middle in every way and changes the most, which gives Tom more subtle work to do.

      • joe spider says:

        @Intro Outro

perhaps he will “think” the dialogue and we can hear his thoughts?

      • Lilacflowers says:

They seem to have changed several of the character names in Hi-Rise. The novel has Alice and Eleanor but the cast listing doesn’t. Instead, there are a few names listed that don’t appear in the novel.

      • Intro Outro says:

@Lilac, I agree re: transformation and subtlety.

@joe: you’ve touched on an interesting subject actually. Judging by the book, there OUGHT to be a lot of internal monologue.. but that’s something I intensely dislike in films. Bits of it here and there – why not? But if abused, it simply becomes lazy storytelling on the part of the director and actors. I am extremely curious as to how Wheatley will deal with it. I hope he goes the hard way and chooses imagery and action and facial expressions instead of internal monologues.

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflowers they also seemed to have added an additional relationship with Royal’s PA for Laing as well. In the book he has one with a lady from the party and another which is a spoiler, In the press releases they say he is linked to Royal’s PA.
Agree about his transformative role and it could be interesting seeing him in something which requires more physicality than words.

@Intro Outro I am not a fan of voice overs either so hopefully it will not be to much. They could also opt for a narrator but not crazy about that either

      • 'P'enny says:

to be honest the conversation is lacking in the book between all three main characters, there is a lot of staring across the corridors, However, I have taken heart with Luke Evans saying that he and Tom have some great scenes together, which makes me wonder if they may have oomphed it up a bit.

Tom is very good at quiet roles, we’ve all seen the way he can catch our attention away from Kenneth Brannagh in Wallander, and obviously his best subtle acting in Archipelago is marvellous. So I can deal with a quite Tom, but if this film has a chance of going mainstream it will need more dialogue oomph.

        roll on 2015

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Intro Outro, I think, if I remember correctly, Siena Miller’s Charlotte character is Royal’s PA and she and Laing have a dalliance in the beginning of the book. Later, Laing is with Eleanor, the TV reviewer, and the third woman. He has to go in search for batteries for her TV so she can do her work. They seem to have changed the names of Eleanor and the third woman.

While this type of movie doesn’t appeal to me, I can appreciate the devotion he has to getting the character right and giving it is full attention. But me, I’m waiting for Crimson Peak.

Luke Evans on Tom, “he’s a lovely man..” i just love his welsh tones.

  17. allons-y alonso says:

Such a cute beanpole. I couldn’t imagine him needing to lose anymore weight for a role. As London’s newest resident, I’ll be happy to cook for you, Hiddleston. Try saying no to paella!

  18. Dara says:

OK, to get the serious out of the way – his focus, dedication and commitment are astounding. That kind of energy and drive will take him far. Combined with his talent and there really is no limit.

But I’m going to re-affirm my opinion from a while ago and say having him as a houseguest – while no doubt highly enjoyable – might also be exhausting. I am still picturing Rodney and/or his wife Claudia hiding in the bathroom with the lights off to have a moment of peace while Tom goes from room to room, guitar in hand, looking for his next lesson. “Yes Tom” says Rodney, “a run sounds like a fabulous idea. If you go left out of the driveway you can take the scenic route. Don’t mind the sign that says ‘Entering Kentucky’ – we’re quite close to the border.”

    • Lilacflowers says:

The boundless energy of a labrador puppy would get to me.

You just have to wear him out.
        😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

Somehow, I would find a way!

      • jammypants says:

The poor man can wear out. I read an interview a few years ago where he had a week off and slept the entire time.

      • Dara says:

But lab puppies are so much fun! All fluffy and bouncy and adorable. You just want to grab and squeeze and roll around on the floor tickling the life out of them… wait, we are still talking about baby dogs right? Sigh – so cute…

@jammy – I have no doubt he works until he drops. It’s admirable, to a point, but I worry that it’s sustainable in the long term, and not just for him. The entertainment industry isn’t exactly the model for stable, well-adjusted inter-personal relationships and the all-consuming pace is probably a huge factor in that. I know someone whose grandfather is an Oscar-winning legend (behind the camera) and his entire family know they come in a distant second to his career and his films – his children resent him, his grandchildren barely know him, he only stays married to his second wife because she’s resigned herself to being a film-widow. His work will live forever, but not sure it makes up for the shambles that is his personal life.

      • icerose says:

yes to lab puppy and I will arrive with doggy treats.
But Tom is a very well behaved puppy who I suspect would be very considerate re his hosts. I would not be surprised if the Crowell’s did not have an arrangement for lengthy guests like a separate dog house where both parties can get away for a break.

@Dara Tom is not married and sometimes that can have an effect on how you approach your work. The fact that he loves kids would suggest that he would probably be a busy bit fun father. And he does take time out to spend time with his family and mother which suggests he is also very family orientated. Sometimes families can feel resentful but I also know families with passionate workaholic fathers where the closeness and respect still exists. There are so many other factors in play that it is difficult to predict what the future holds.

  19. Maria of MD says:

They were or they are auctioning off a pair of Hank Williams’ boots from the Waylon Jennings estate. Wonder if anyone told Hiddleston or the producers about that. That would be the sort of cool talismanic things to have for him to play Williams.

    • 'P'enny says:

someone auctioned off hank’s car last week, i big lovely red thing, went for over $100,000 i wondered if the film studio got it as well.

      • icerose says:

Could be -. Abrahms is a huge Hank fan so he may have brought it for himself.
re the boots I can just see Tom as Cinderella saying “And yes they do fit”

      • Isadora says:

Ouch, hopefully not the way the stepsisters “fit” into the shoe. That fairy tale is quite gruesome and bloody.

It would be cool if the film company got some real Hank Williams stuff from the auctions!

  20. BadAssCompass says:

gosh, the more I read about Hiddles the more enchanted I become, I mean, is he even a human? it’s clearly a PR move to reassure the sceptics, but nevertheless, the drill, the courage to even take up on that role and then immediately go up on stage with zero band experience, that does command respect indeed.
I hope his hard work and dedication pay off and he doesn’t get hollow cheeks on Hank diet.

  21. icerose says:

tweet from what looks like a back up singer plus singer /sonhwriter @jessEdondero Sept.30th so he is still recording

It was a pleasure and honor to sing with @twhiddleston today ! #hankwilliams

  22. Lisa says:

I just don’t get it. Sorry.

    • JL says:

Really polished and practiced “everything to everyone” image is his appeal, some people like that but he doesn’t hold my attention too long either. He’s def a hard worker, decent actor.

This facebook post reads like a PR blurb though, maybe to ward off HW3’s crap. Not a fan of it.

      • joe spider says:

What, the facebook or the crap?

      • icerose says:

Of course it is part PR but Rodney is not paid to do PR only to work with him on his music . What makes this and Beaver’s interesting is that they are not just the usual “he is very professional and fun to work with” platitudes but very lengthy, detailed posts which they were not required to post.
Rodney was pretty foxy. He held back from saying anything to counter Hank until he had the enough to make a measured response with evidence to support it.
What I like about Tom is his spontaneity and sense of fun but not everybody is going to see it like that.
@Lisa no need to feel sorry you cannot be a fan of everyone.

  23. TotallyBiased says:

Yay!n The post I was looking for–how DO people find these when they aren’t tagged Hiddleston? Anyway, the minute I read the original FB post, I knew CB would get to this eventually. And the commentary does not disappoint.

Now, nuts and bolts: elsewhere someone snarked that this wasn’t Tom’s first time performing with a band. I can only surmise they were referring to his singing Bear Necessities at the charity gig. But to me, a bit of stunt cabaret warbling with a couple of musicians is NOTHING like getting up on a main stage with an established band. Not to mention playing an instrument at the same time. Rodney’s description does perhaps go a little over the top ( boyishly? How ADORABLE!) but as we’ve seen, Tom brings out the cuddle in the straightest-seeming of men. 😀

    • joe spider says:

“knew CB would get to this eventually. And the commentary does not disappoint.”

I confess – I emailed to tip Celebitchy off – Just to make sure it wasn’t missed, you understand.

      You are welcome 🙂

      • TotallyBiased says:

Thank YOU very much, my arachnoid friend! Now if only it would get properly tagged so it will show up when you go to his name on the CB celebrities list.

      • Allegra says:

        Sorry wrong place.

        I agree with you!
Sing at a charity event does not compare to sing at a festival music. In the latter, people will have a more critical stance.
It is obvious to anyone who watched that video on Youtube, that he was having too much fun singing Bear Necessities and swinging his hips.

    • icerose says:

the cabaret performance was very intimate charity affair-Wheatlands was a 1,500 crowd. I can see why Tom said it because there is a difference between a country rock band playing an open air festival and a cabaret set up, Basically it has a slightly cooler image and he and as you say he was also playing an instrument as well

    • Josa says:

That charity event was like a karaoke setting with a live band playing instead of can music. There was no expectation from the audience. At Wheatland, he is playing as part of a professional band. Big difference.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Good description! “like a karaoke setting with a live band…no expectation from the audience”–You really hit the nail on the head. Wheatland Festival audience was friendly, but not there to hear actors pretending to sing 😀 And the next day, in the video, you can hear an audience member telling him he is “welcome back anytime.”
        Gotta love it.
