Chris Hemsworth & the ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ trailer: are you into it?

FFN_Hemsworth_Chris_STOI_101514_51559686

Here are some photos of Chris Hemsworth at LAX on Wednesday. He was arriving in LA, probably/maybe coming in from London? We haven’t seen much of Chris or his wife Elsa Pataky for months now. I’ve assumed that the Pataky-Hemsworth family had decamped to London while Chris filmed The Avengers: Age of Ultron. But God knows. Chris is surprisingly good at being undercover when he wants to be. His wife, not so much.

Anyway, to go along with these newish photos, the brand new trailer for Chris’s film premiered yesterday. The film is In the Heart of the Sea, which is just a terrible title. I know it’s based on the real book and the real events that really took place, but the title makes me think “Titanic 2: Rose’s Heart Will Go On.” As I said, the film is about the real story of a giant whale attacking a ship in 1819. The events inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Here’s the trailer:

I’m not really into it. It seems more like a guy-movie and I’m saying that with no judgment. My dad would have loved it, I’m sure. Whenever there’s a story about boats and old-timely seamen and man battling some ancient monster (or as the voiceover says, a “demon”), I just kind of zone out. It’s not my jam. It comes out on March 13 next year. Which means…? I guess Chris Hemsworth is going to be presenting at the Oscars again this year. Yay?

With Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson and a whole bunch of other people who can act. I probably am going to have to see this.

Oh, Chris and Ron Howard were on Nantucket earlier this week so he was probably flying in from Providence, Boston or New York.

    • Sixer says:

Yesterday’s Peaky Blinders was, well, a blinder! Scene with The Bloke and Murphy. The Bloke channeling his inner ranting sadist while Murphy stands silent. And yet, I think silent Murphy was the loudest. I was so overcome that I almost fell off the sofa, much to the amusement of Mr Sixer and the Sixlets.

      • 'P'enny says:

Peaky Blinders was brilliant – I wish Tom Hardy was in it a bit more, but I expect a big juicy end is coming.

      • Amelia says:

It’s difficult to describe how thrilled I am to have my Tuesday evening fill of Peaky Blinders and hot chocolate back 😀
Just as the weather starts to turn, too.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Ah! I’ve been waiting for Peaky Blinders reaction updates. I don’t need plot details, the reactions are entertaining on their own.

      • Sixer says:

The Bloke has had three big scenes so far. He’s compelling! Murphy is still doing that devastate you with a microexpression thing. Helen McCrory is a star. In fact, all the acting is superlative. Soundtrack’s diversified a bit but is still great. Visual style fab. Man, I love the show.

The hilarious but still good thing this week was the bringing in of a Black Country gang. In a show famed for its accent work, it was a masterstroke. Most Britons would have trouble distinguishing between a Black Country and a Birmingham accent (a bit like the discussions on the finer points of some regional US accents I’ve seen on here) and this week they made an entire scene out of it. Genius!

      • MrsB says:

I just found this show on Netflix and was debating on starting it or Ripper Street. Think I may go with Peaky Blinders!

      • Sixer says:

We’re on Season 2 in the UK now, MrsB. It’s a fab show. Very stylish. Ripper Street is nice too – but much more in the recognisable BBC period drama mould.

      • balehead2012 says:

Sixer, my thoughts exactly! I actually found Cillian more menacing in his silence, than Hardy in all his ranting. Great scene, though!
Oh, I’m so happy to finally find other Peaky Blinders here 🙂

  2. Sixer says:

My father would also go for this! Anything in the Hornblower tradition. Me, not so much. Although, Ron Howard does make films that I’m always quite happy to watch as a good democratic choice for all members of the family at Christmas when we’re all in the turkey-tryptophan stupor anyway. I think that’s probably damning with faint praise. Oh well.

    • Lori says:

It does sort of seem like an old school movie that you see over the holidays. Like a Charlton Heston 10 commandents or something. Hemsworth kinda looks like Heston actually.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Since it opens mid-March, I suspect it may be our family’s Easter Sunday movie selection

  3. silken_floss says:

I’m here for Cillian Murphy!! Chris Hemsworth, not so much

  4. joe spider says:

He looks a lot better down to this size than in Thor mode.

    • Kali says:

I just can’t get over how different he looks out of Avengers beast mode! Not bad at all, just different.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

I still can’t believe people didn’t realize that Chris Hemsworth bulks up big time for “Thor.” ‘This’ (the way he looks above) is his normal size. This is how he looked when I first saw him (and fell in lust … er… love) as James T. Kirk’s father George in the 2009 “Star Trek” film (that was great casting, by the way, because Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine have a similar look and great blue eyes). He just bulks up really, really well. 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

He had to slim down quite a bit for this movie and for Rush as well – he couldn’t fit into the race cars in Thor mode.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Lilacflowers, who wrote: “He had to slim down quite a bit for this movie and for Rush as well – he couldn’t fit into the race cars in Thor mode.”

Yes, but he bulked up for “Thor.” He didn’t ‘slim’ down from his normal size in “Thor” to make this movie and “Rush.” He just stopped bulking and went back to his regular/normal size and weight. The way he looks in the picture above isn’t the anomaly–the way he looks as “Thor” is.

      • Kali says:

There’s a shot of him where he’s trying to lift the hammer in the first “Thor” and he’s just started to verge into “scary terrifying veiny body builder” territory. It totally works though because, you know, alien spaceman/thunder God.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Emma, actually, for this movie, he had to get below his normal size because his character goes through starvation but he filmed this last fall and winter. He talked about his weight loss diet and how he had to look scrawny for it during his Thor 2 promotion because he was dieting then. He then had to bulk up into Thor mode for Avengers 2 this summer. He’s now getting back to normal size.

      • 'P'enny says:

“…. during his Thor 2 promotion because he was dieting then.”

        what Thor 2 promotion? [#sarcasm]

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, the two interviews he gave on Letterman and Kimmel, which was taped the afternoon of the Hollywood premiere

      • Marty says:

Letterman and Kimmel film in two different cities. Or are you making a joke?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Marty, I know they film in different parts of the country. The Kimmel interview was the same day as the premiere. He says so during the interview and he wears the same suit. The Letterman interview was done on a different day. I didn’t say both interviews were the same day.

      • Marty says:

Ah, you just meant Kimmel on the same day. Gotcha. I was confused because you said ‘Letterman and Kimmel’, but Chris didn’t go to Letteman for TDW promotions. He hasn’t been there since Avengers promotions. Sorry, that’s why I got confused.

  5. Kali says:

Since when is 2 minutes a TEASER trailer? But seriously, this looks awesome. I wish they had stuck with that music that’s going under the trailer from 0-30 seconds in (when Chris throws that harpoon) for the entire trailer as it seems to veer wildly in tone. It goes from SUPER INTENSE to ALLTHENOSTALGIA with the voiceover and then Oscar beauty towards the end where it’s just “look at this cast, no seriously, just look at it” and then FLUUUUUUUUKE.

Generally you have the 30″ dramatic teaser with maybe a quick flash of creature/monster, 1 min-1.30 trailer with bit of v/o and then 2 min where it’s the outline of what to expect.

(Sorry for the wall of txt, movies and associated strategy/marketing is kinda my jam 😄).

TL; DR “Master and Commander” period movie pr0n with super good looking dudes and a whale that will haunt your nightmares.

    • cr says:

The music/tone switch up bothered me as well, though you expressed it much better.

      • Kali says:

I was just a bit annoyed as my heart was pretty much in my throat for that first 30 seconds and then they go to the wise old man narration (am assuming it’s an old man version of a survivor) and it just kills it stone dead.

      • cr says:

@Kali, part of the trailer makes it look like an interesting human drama story. And part of it had me expecting to see Jack Sparrow show up saying ‘hello beastie’.

  6. 'P'enny says:

He’s been in OZ, buying a fab house in Byron Bay. [well jel, as they say] I wonder if he is planning to decamp back home and move from Hollywood. Perhaps he want to raise his kids away from Beverley Hills High.

  7. Kate2 says:

This book is one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite. As someone who goes to Nantucket yearly and considers it one of my favorite places on Earth, this book and this story is near and dear to me.

It’s written by Nathaniel Philbrick and even though it’s non-fiction, it reads like fiction. It’s an amazing story, and it’s not just about a whale attacking a ship, but about all that comes after, which is incredible. The Essex was a whaling ship out of Nantucket in the early 19th century. On one of their expeditions they were sunk by a whale in the middle of the Pacific and the rest of the story is about what happened to the survivors, which is horrifying.

Herman Melville based Moby Dick on the story of the Essex. I hope Ron Howard didn’t f-ck it up. But I’ll be there with bells on.

    • Esmom says:

My husband loved this book, loves Nathaniel Philbrick, so I have been meaning to get to it for a while. The prospect of seeing the film may force me to do it quickly.

      • Kate2 says:

Has your husband read The Mayflower or Bunker Hill? I’m in the middle of Bunker Hill. Its terrific, but I put it down last year and haven’t picked it up again. Not because it wasn’t good but because I keep forgetting I have it, lol.

When I found out they were making this movie I freaked.

      • Esmom says:

Yes, he’s read everything by him and loved it all.

    • Pipsqueak says:

I loved this book too! It’s an incredible story. It might seem like a “guy” story at first glance, but there is an emotional component that just draws you in. I for one can’t wait for this movie. 😀

    • Size Does Matter says:

Count me in. Love this book and the story. It is amazing what human beings are capable of.

  8. Somenestolemyname says:

It sounds great, can’t wait to see it.
Hemsworth reminds me of a young Brad Pitt. Gorgeous man.

    • Esmom says:

ITA on the Pitt resemblance. I thought the header photo actually was Pitt and in that split second my brain was having a hard time computing why he looked so much younger and blonder. They look more like brothers than the actual brothers do!

  9. Marianne says:

Half of me thinks it looks interesting. The other half of me thinks it looks kind of cheesy. But it does have a good cast.

  10. Jh says:

Looks good but what is up with the title? It’s horrible for a book or a movie or anything at all.

  11. Tig says:

The book is amazing- it’s very similar to Unbroken as it deals with surviving in the face of insurmountable odds. I think Ron Howard does a great job of putting you “in the moment”- see Apollo 13- so will be checking this out.

  12. Hissyfit says:

The close up photo, which was the main icon for this thread, I thought it was a young, blonde Brad Pitt. Crazy!

  13. Mia4S says:

Surrounding the action star with great actors. Smart Howard, very smart.

Odd that it’s a March release. Seems like an Oscar-baity concept. Not good enough for Oscar season so they are going for the cash? Again, very smart Howard.

  14. browniecakes says:

    Where’s Johnny Depp?

  15. Dommy Dearest says:

I’ll probably see it. I watched Rush cause of Chris and found it to be an awesome movie. I enjoy Cillian so I can’t see why I wouldn’t watch it. Even if it is to enjoy the face of Thor while he’s Donald Blake… Taking on a whale. 😉

  16. Marty says:

I was meh on this film, but it actually looks really good. It makes me want to go out and read the book.

  17. weegiewarrior says:

Looks like a great story – ron howard is a very good director – looking forward to seeing it

  18. aquarius64 says:

Boy, he gets mobbed at airports. Who’s the girl with him? The only that looking adoringly at him? Just a fan?

    Watch out Elsa.

  19. RhymesWithSilver says:

I read this book several years ago, and it was amazing! But my favorite genre is historical non-fiction, so I suppose your mileage may vary. In any case, the story of The Essex is really fascinating, and if I get a Hemsworth along with it, well, that’s pretty much a done deal. Although I wonder if they had to starve the hell out of him and Cillian Murphy, because the real-life guys who survived to tell the tale ended up in pretty rough shape, let me tell you. And the title is an allusion to the Book of Exodus, the part where the Pharaoh’s army pursuing Moses is swallowed by the sea.
