Jennifer Aniston: no matter what I say, it will be taken out of context

fp_1948546_barm_marleyme_italy_022709

Jennifer Aniston seems to have learned hot to not give a damn anymore in terms of the press. She recently told UK Elle she knows that no matter what she says or what she does, someone is going to misinterpret it – normally for the worse.

‘No matter what I say, things will always be taken out of context and misinterpreted, will always be turned around to make it seem as though I won’t let something go, or that I just keep talking about it over and over. I don’t owe anybody anything. I don’t owe anybody my side of the story. There are no sides! There is no bad guy and there is no good guy. There are no villains and there is no heroine in this story. It’s just not the case.’ Jennifer Aniston finally sets the record straight. She’s moved on, and is happier than ever.

‘ I remind myself every day that I am lucky. Look what’s out there. Look what people are really living through. There’s no comparison. I am happy’ reveals the actress who turned forty last month, but looks a decade younger with the help neutrogena soap , regular facials and an obsession with applying sunscreen.

I’m a realist,’ she says. ‘I know that if I eat nothing but burgers and chips, I’m not going to be hired for the parts I normally would. That might be fine one day, but not right now.’

[From Elle UK]

I used to always get annoyed when I read celebrities claiming what they said had been misinterpreted or misquoted. I found it to be such an annoying excuse. But after writing for a year and a half, I’ve been shocked at how many times my own words have been completely misconstrued. I’ve learned it’s not very hard to say the wrong thing. Sometimes you try to be so careful that you end up writing completely boring drivel. Jennifer probably has the same problem – she could stick with bland generics, or be real – but she’s right, someone will always pull out the bad parts and twist them around.

Jen and Owen Wilson have been in Germany promoting the release of “Marley and Me.” They were on the variety show “Wetten dass,” and Jennifer ended up eating a dog biscuit. Well, Owen did too, but he had to. Obviously.

The show asks celebrity visitors to bet whether a special guest can perform the talent they claim to have. This time, it was a German woman who boasted that she could identify each of her team of Husky dogs by the sound of them lapping up soup. Wilson didn’t believe she could do it, while Aniston bet on her.

Then the show’s host, Thomas Gottschalk, told them that whoever lost the bet would have to eat a few dog biscuits. “I wish I had known the stakes first,” Wilson said. When the dog owner, who was blindfolded, guessed right, Gottschalk invited both Wilson and Aniston to join him in a biscuit. Aniston protested, “But I guessed right!” The host told her, “You’re a team, just like the dogs,” which prompted Wilson to put his arm around her shoulder and say, “Honey, we’re in this together.”

Gottschalk gave each of the actors a biscuit and said, “I’ll eat one, I’m the host. And Owen, you have to eat one. Jennifer, you can eat it if you want, but I’d really like to be able to tell my grandkids that I ate dog biscuits with Jennifer Aniston.”

[From People]

Aniston noted that the biscuits were, “a little dry,” but was certainly a great sport. YouTube has a video of the show. Most of it’s in German, but you can hear what Jen and Owen are saying even though an interpreter is talking over them. I can’t think of many other celebrities that would go along with such ridiculousness, but it is endearing.

Here’s Jennifer and Owen at the “Marley and Me” premiere in Italy on Friday. Images thanks to Fame.com.

  1. Jenna says:

Well at least she knows it.

  2. Annie says:

Pfft. Even at work my words get misconstrued and taken out of context. If it can happen on a small scale, it can definitely happen on the larger scale with…oh…a million more people in the mix.

It’s the nature of the beast.

Best to just shut your mouth really. (Learned THAT the hard way. LOL)

  3. Sauronsarmy says:

“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t” she should get that tattooed somewhere.

  4. cee says:

Well then SHUT UP!!!!!!. Leave Brad and ANgie alone and move on. Leave them out of your conversation. She is pitiful. I think that she is not very bright so the only thing she can do is talk about the “IT” couple. I am sick of her.

  5. Kaiser says:

In the Elle interview, she also says that she hopes to be hired as a Bond girl. She’s mentioned Daniel Craig a bunch of times in interviews now. Someone’s got a crush.

Happy birthday Daniel Craig! He’s got 41 years on that fine ass.

  6. kap says:

Now she’s talking about not talking about her Ex, his family, or the long ago break up. OK, I get it (not!). Does the expression “no comment” or I’d like this to be “off the record” mean anything to her? How about negotiating what can or cannot be asked prior to the interview? It’s done all the time. Problem is she’s boring, so no one want an interview unless they can get some juicy BP/AJ comments.

  7. Baholicious says:

She tries to come across as so reflective and introspective and blah, blah, blah. Meanwhile, the woman is about as deep as a petrie dish.

  8. Annicka says:

All she ever talks about is how Angelina Jolie stole her husband and how ‘uncool’ that was.

  9. lisa says:

Here is some advice Jen: Shut your damn mouth for once. Not everyone finds you interesting in the first place.

  10. Holly says:

“But after writing for a year and a half, I’ve been shocked at how many times my own words have been completely misconstrued. I’ve learned it’s not very hard to say the wrong thing. Sometimes you try to be so careful that you end up writing completely boring drivel.” so so so so so so true. In fact, taking that into account, it makes me want to be a little easier on her. Great post Jaybird!

  11. Zoe says:

Why does she seem to get a new “tweak” done on her nose as often as she gets her nails done?

  12. PJ says:

Love the people who are always telling JA to “shut up” when reading about an interview she did. But if she shut up, then she wouldn’t be doing an interview, would she?

If you don’t like to hear what she has to say, there’s an easy remedy: don’t read it.

  13. Feebee says:

I’m with those who think maybe she should just stop talking. Promote your film. Talk about the film. End of interview.

  14. PJ says:

Jaybird, I agree. People hear what they want to hear, and interpret it according to their own experiences and preconceived ideas.

  15. Kim says:

Then she and the douche bag should shut up because they are narcissit uncaring souls. Nothing genuine about them. I cringe each time a statement
    Comes from them.

  16. Zoe says:

I used to feel bad for her because it really seemed like she just couldn’t win, no matter what she said. Then, at some point around the “Uncool” era, (and the naming of Zahara and Maddox in one of her interviews around this time) I just lost all respect for her.

She used to seem innocuous and kind of sweet, now she just seems like part of the PR machine and she’s riding on other’s fame to stay in the tabs… *shrugs*

I still have some hope for her to come back and get some respect for her work, but it’s fading fast.

  17. Monie says:

I think she looks great in this video.

  18. Wow says:

Jenn A. is right in her assessment. I’vee seen plenty of her quotes taken out of context to feed the public’s notion that she is a brooding and bitter ex-wife even as she’s photographed smiling and glowing with a new boyfriend. Good on her to realize that no matter what she says it will be twisted around to feed whatever image some of the media wants to type cast her as. Its a good thing she doesn’t seem to care about it.

  19. Jen says:

Hmmm. She’s got some Victor Garber ears going on in that header pic…the left one is way bigger than the right. She kinda looks like Dopey. 🙂

  20. Sarah says:

She’s one of the few celebrities I like, despite her very bad taste in men. I think she comes off as very genuine and quite funny. I just wish for her sake she’d drop the loser she’s with. Can’t stand John Mayer.

  21. someone says:

Im a fan of Jen, have been for a very long time..and she is right, no matter what she says or does..the haters and Brangaloonies will crucify her at every turn.ANNICKA???I have never heard Jennifer talk about Angelina stealing her husband….you are one of those haters that like to start trouble. As far as the “uncool” comment..Jen was absolutley right. Angelina is the one who should STFU, and stop telling the media about her personal buisness.

  22. Dingles says:

She’s right- and if she were smart she’d stop talking about her personal life altogether. If she were smarter she would have never started.

The reason people harp on her so much and put Angelina on this pedestal, aside from the fact that one is an Oscar-nominee and the other dates a douchebag who publicly humiliated her, is because Angelina does not get defensive about anything and Jennifer is always coming off as desperate and sensitive.
People respect it when you do your own thing and act like you have nothing to prove. Jennifer, in her bid to get America to LIEK HER MOARRRRR, just comes off as fake and touchy.

I think a year or so of taking a break from the whole ‘wannabe A-list’ thing and a doing few indie movies would do her image a world of good. Posing naked in a magazine will not get you respect, but being damn good at your job will.

  23. debra77 says:

If she believes her words could be taken out of content why did she not apply that same reasoning to Angelina’s words. Angie never said she and Brad had an affair. She said that it took til the end of the movie for he and she to realize that what they were feeling was more then they had let themselves believe at first. Then Brad left Jen and they got together. End of story. She is always the one misunderstood. Yet she is not able to see that it is possible for someone else to be misunderstood too. Angie is not allowed or get critized when she talks about her love for Brad. She has a right to do so. This is the man she is sharing her life with. Jennifer talks about John. Is that an insult to Jessica Simpson or Jennifer Love Hewitt. NO. I am glad this mess is coming to an end. Brad/Angie’s older child will be eight years old in August. The twins are almost 1 year. How long must this man be associated with this woman. She has had 4 relationships since her divorce. Yet Brad is the only one talked about. 4+ years.. is 3.9+ years too long. Let’s all move on shall we.

  24. snappyfish says:

she would so screw up a bond movie. Love Daniel Craig can’t stand this girl. I did like her on friends and that is where she should have stayed.

  25. serena says:

Debra27 well put…. No one ever cuts Angie any slack. Her words get turned around all the time. Except for the interview in which she was very clear about her priorities (I think it was Nightline) She says and I quote. ” being a Mom to her kids, a woman to Brad, her humanitarian work and her work.” Angie is a very special person and Brad is very lucky to have found her.

  26. Codzilla says:

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  27. Ophelia says:

lmao, and JayBird’s title has been completely proven true! Literally, no matter what JA says, everyone will bitch about it. She does interviews about movies and everyone ignores it. She mentions something that *might* have to do with AJ/BP and everyone says she can’t get over it. Personally, and I could be way wrong here, I think talking about a painful memory usually means you’re dealing with it and/or over it. When something bad happens in my life, it can take a long time for me to talk about it. But that’s just me, maybe other people deal with it differently. I just wish all three of them would stfu, they’re becoming parodies of themselves, Jennifer the Desperate, Angelina the Whore, Brad the cad. Damn that rhymed. But none of these things are probably true.

  28. RAN says:

She’s right…even THIS article gets taken out of context by people. Good article Jaybird – it’s nice to read different perspectives around this nonsense.

  29. Trillion says:

I hope the Bond producers know enough to stay way the hell away from her. That would be a travesty.

  30. Bodhi says:

She’s right, no matter what she says, it will get twisted all around. Same goes for 97% of celebrities.

I call MASSIVE bullshit on the actress who turned forty last month, but looks a decade younger with the help neutrogena soap , regular facials and an obsession with applying sunscreen.

Not so much the turning 40 bit, because its true & I don’t give a damn, but a decade younger? Obviously the woman looks amazing, but she doesn’t look THAT young, sun damage never lies, no matter how much sunscreen you slap on.

Even if she DID look 30, it would take way WAY more than Neutrogena & sunscreen to make her look that way.

  31. Bodhi says:

And I do realize that Jen didn’t say the quotes I mentioned.

  32. Rita says:

No No No, No Bond for her. She cannot be allowed to interject RachelG into a Bond movie. She is not a Bond-a-babe. Does she really not realize that she is already a character actor? And excuse me, but why can’t she just say “no comment” sometimes. She is beginning to sound to me like the verbose nonsensical John Mayer and that is not good.

  33. Camille says:

Wow, she looks awful in that header pic, no wonder she rarely wears her hair up. Her hair half up/half down might look cute though. Also that outfit looks terrible on her, it makes her look well, dare I say, manly. Verging into Madonna territory.

I’m happy to hear that she appears to want the whole AJ & BP vs JA thing to stop, also good to hear that she is happy.

  34. Camille says:

@Bodhi- I so agree with you!

  35. tasteT says:

    Ummmm Who cares??

I’d like to see some relevant acting roles.

I think she is a pretty lady but she could be so much more than she is..

    a bunch of cupcake roles..get a oscar
or at least nominated for one.

    That’s why I prefer Angelina..its about
acting–not ya hair, or John Mayer’s
lame looking butt or your workout.

    Angie chooses some interesting roles.

BUT Jen is very pretty to me..more substance is needed.

    JMO

  36. j. ferber says:

I think all three in the “insane Bermuda triangle” are lacking in the talent department. The best I could say of Jen in any movie role is “adequate” (for The Good Girl). I went insane for Brad Pitt when I first saw him in Thelma and Louise (that was one hot boy), but his prettiness always trumped his acting ability (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I don’t think Angelina is a great actress either. I think Jen has done amazingly well in Hollywood and I think she knows this. She’s very ambitious for wanting to be a movie star, but what’s wrong with being a television actress? She’s already succeeded in the milieu that suits her best. Isn’t that enough? Why churn out one mediocre picture after another?

  37. Rosanna says:

If only she sounded as good as she looks ***rolling eyes***

  38. tanya says:

Yes, by now Angelina’s spell is wearing off. 100 kids won’t keep a man and if it does, who really needs him in the first place?

The best thing that ever happened to Jen, was Angelina “stealing Brad” away. The worst thing happening to Angelina is “getting her man”. The future is written in stone on this. Beware of what you wish for…

  39. czarina says:

It must be difficult to say nothing when you are asked a direct question. If an interviewer asks “How do you deal with all the tabloid crap that is STILL going on over your divorce?” it’s not an easy question to ignore.
If you say “no comment” she will sound like a snot. (and everyone picks over what she REALLY meant by that or the interviewer adds on “Jen sighs meaningfully when she says this” or whatever)
If you answer it honestly (as she did) it just invites more criticism.
I think she’s chosen the best path for herself. She is going to be honest, as far as it goes, without being excessive.
If I were in that position, I would probably handle it the same way.
(and let’s be fair–people made way more out of her “uncool” comment than it deserved…good heavens people are turning it into an “era” now! Yeesh!)

  40. czarina says:

Ah, I meant if SHE says no comment…MY resolution is not correcting my grammer now that the edit is gone…I’m going to go wild and just ignore it!!!LOL

  41. Granger says:

Bodhi, I agree, and all you have to do is watch Jen at the Oscars to see that she doesn’t really look as young as people think she does when they see her in all her air-brushed-and-under-perfect-lighting glory. Her skin is seriously sun-damaged.

I should clarify that I don’t think she looks OLD. I just don’t think she looks any better than my 40-year-old friends, all of whom, incidentally, have young children they’re up with in the night, and none of whom have the benefit of regular facials and expensive skin-care products!

  42. TM says:

While pretty in a bland taupe kind of way, she is remarkably forgetable…. Smart girl for being able to flog the same dead horse for over 4 years….
She is now in “talk about it while pretending not to talk about it” stealh mode
……waaay to go girl to get the millage

  43. Kaiser says:

Amen to Granger & Bodhi on the sun damage front. I left it out of my coverage of the Oscars, but Aniston really needs to lay off the cigs & put on some sunscreen. Her hair still looks good, but her skin is leathery. Use a face cream with SPF, Jen!

  44. Ana says:

If she realizes this, why does she continue to bring stuff up. Oh I forgot, she had a movie to promote. She’s not stupid.
I find it difficult to believe that she uses sunscreen often. Her skin is looking kind of leathery and freckly. If those are words. lol.
And her face is melting into her neck! Gah.

  45. Ana says:

I do want to add that I think it’s refreshing she admits that she eats healthy and exercises unlike a lot of other celebrities that claim “great genetics” and “I eat all the time I swear!” crap.

  46. Faye says:

Jen Aniston seems to be not only referring to herself but to other celebrities as well. there are no villians, no heroines, she states….she is actually really asking everyone to back off, she was wronged, yes, and hurt, yes. I definatly feel that what Brad and Angie did was wrong, and she does not deserve all the negative feelings from people as she really did nothing wrong.

Would really love to see her take on some more demanding roles, she wants to be a bond girl, that is something earned, lets see some sexy, or action, career needs a 90 degree.

She says everything she says is taken out of context, prooven herself right right here 🙂

  47. geronimo says:

Amen, Dingles. You’ve said it all. A break is what she needs. If she acted like someone of substance, she’d be treated like someone of substance. She needs a long hard look in the mirror.

    @Bodhi – agree!

  48. NotBlonde says:

I really do not and still do not understand what the problem is with her.

She says she’s over it and says there are no bad guys and basically says that whatever she says will be misinterpreted (way to prove her point, some of you) and yet still the hateful stuff.

“Take a break”? Then you’d get on her for being on vacation and not doing anything.

“Why does she continue to bring stuff up?” She’s clearly saying that she’s tired of other people bringing it up and misinterpreting her words about it.

She’s an actress and a celebrity who disappears whenever she isn’t promoting something. She isn’t an attention whore and she leaves well enough alone when she doesn’t need to be in the public eye. I swear it’s like the bullies in school who pick on the boring girl just because there is nothing to pick on her for.

  49. Hmmm... says:

Jen can’t do “serious”, Angie can’t do “comedy”, neither is the box office draw that people pretend them to be.

Marley & Me was successful, but HJNTIY, not so much; while Wanted made money, but Changeling (and the last other Angie lead role, Mighty Heart) tanked big time compared to Mystic River, Gran Torino, etc…

If it wasn’t for the “triangle”, no-one would give a damn about these people. Selling trashy gossip mags IS their career!

  50. debra77 says:

    hmmmmm,

I guess you are going to apply your same logic to Kate W, Cate B, Anne H, Penelope C, Charlize T, Hillary S, and so many others whose movies have grossed much less than Angelina’s movie. Yet many of you go on and on about how unsuccessful her movies are. Well if she is a failure at the boxoffice she is in great company.

  51. RAN says:

Debra, let the obsession go for a second and re-read the post you were attempting to criticize. Hmmmm… was talking about BOTH actresses, not one.

  52. lara says:

debra, all these women you just mentioned aren’t not nearly half as often in the gossip mags as these three twits. And that’s the big difference. They (the ones you mentioned) are doing movies and if these don’t do so well at the boxoffice, then they don’t go out trying to sell it with stories about their private lives.
