Keanu Reeves is still disappointed he didn’t get to play Wolverine & Batman

Here are some photos of your vampire boyfriend Keanu Reeves, walking around NYC on Sunday. He was with a “female friend” – I’m getting a personal assistant vibe from her, but I’ve been wrong about that kind of thing before. Keanu actually had a decent weekend. John Wick, his new film, was estimated for an $8 million opening but it ended up making $14.15 million. People still like Keanu, that’s what I get from those numbers. People still have a lot of affection for him and we like it when he finds a somewhat interesting project.

As we discussed last week, Keanu has been talking about his career and what parts he was never offered and what parts he really would have liked. He said before that he would love to play Doctor Strange, but that part just went to Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s also saying that he would have loved to play Batman or Wolverine!

Keanu Reeves may have played Constantine, but he still harbors interest in other comicbook characters. The action star told Moviefone that there are two particular superheroes that he’s dreamt of portraying: Batman and Wolverine.

“I always wanted to play Wolverine, but I didn’t get that,” he told Moviefone. “And they have a great Wolverine now. I always wanted to play The Dark Knight, but I didn’t get that one. They’ve had some great Batmans. So now I’m just enjoying them as an audience.”

Reeves also talked about an iconic character that he did embody, Ted Theodore Logan. The actor said the future of a “Bill & Ted” sequel is still uncertain this early in the development process.

“We’re trying to do it,” he said. “There’s a script. We’re trying to get the rights. We’re trying to raise the money. We’re trying to get a director. It’s still early days.”

[From Variety]

That’s really interesting, right? The way Keanu says “I didn’t get that” makes it sound like he was on those short lists, maybe he even auditioned and met with directors but they went with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale instead. I don’t think Keanu would have been a good Wolverine, but I could totally see him as Bruce Wayne (dude…) and Batman. Damn, Keanu would have been SO MUCH BETTER than The Batfleck!! Sh-t, man.

Oh, there’s also a rumor going around the UK tabloids that Keanu met Kelly Brook at an LA gym and “there was immediate chemistry and they swapped numbers and began texting straight away. Since then, they’ve been on a couple of low-key dates, which has been a great way of taking Kelly’s mind off recent troubles,” according to an insider. While I think Keanu would be a wonderful upgrade from that gladiator d-bag Kelly has been seeing on-and-off for months, I just don’t see Keanu going for Kelly.

    Love Keanu.

    • StormsMama says:

      Me too. Love him FOREVER.

      OK 2 things:
1—That kinda looks like Lynn Collins with dark hair. He DID date her while they shot LakeHouse but I thought shed since gotten married? Anyway it looks like her without makeup on…
2—Keanu for a long time didn’t have a cell phone. Sure, it’s possible that since 06 he’s gotten one! But I’m giving a side eye to that texting story bc even if he finally gave in and got a cell I just don’t see him texting.

      • k says:

i think she looks like keanu. wonder if it is a relative?

      • LadySlippers says:

        •k•

He must have a type because she also looks like his old girlfriend/fiancée, the one that tragically miscarried their stillborn daughter and then died a few years later herself (she and Keanu had broken up by then).

      • LadySlippers says:

        •StormsMama•

I’ve read in several places he doesn’t want anything to do with modern technology and that includes no computers, emails, cell/mobile phones, etc.. Of course, this was a few years back but like you, I’m a tad doubtful about him texting when he was so passionately against technology not that long ago.

    • littlestar says:

ME TOO. Love him forever ever.

  2. khymera says:

Nope can’t see him as either. Batman needs intensity, he’s too laid back.

  3. QQ says:

He is adorable and All but bless his heart he acts like if Pinnoccio grew up and just last week started turning human, so i veeeerryyyy Much doubt he is in short lists for any role that require high energy and/or emoting

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh my God, that was hilarious. Your mind is just a little work of art.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Your comment reminded me of what my mom told me about the Hatfields and McCoys miniseries–with Kevin Costner. I told her that I had started watching it, but stopped because I didn’t think Kevin Costner was all that good. She said he was in this, because he didn’t have to show more than one emotion at a time….HAHAHHA. I mean, you know someone’s a HORRIBLE actor when my Dad says so–because he’ll watch ANYTHING. And he cannot stand Kevin Costner’s movies.

      • QQ says:

*Cackles* Virgilia!! its true tho! i mean his face and aging process is a work of art but Keanu In Motion and speaking words…Naaaaaahhhh

  4. LAK says:

Kelly Brook is too public for him.

Also, back when they were casting Wolverine, there is no way he would have tested. Comic books, with the exception of BATMAN and SUPERMAN, weren’t popular film choices for actors or the public.

XMEN was in development hell for decades and they were looking primarily at action stars like Sylvester Stallone for Wolverine.

Plus he was tied up in the making of THE MATRIX for 5-6years during the final critical period of casting.

  5. Jaderu says:

    Aww Keanu…so dreamy.
I can’t imagine Keanu growling “Where were the other drugs going?!”
    And Kelly Brook? Ya. No.

  6. truthSF says:

I love you Keanu, but no to either role. I can’t see anyone else as Wolverine except Hugh Jackman, and we’ve had too many awful “Batman” already.

  7. Fernanda says:

He looks amazing, it is really incredible. And I am not saying this as a groupie. I mean, can he tell us what is he using? What creams and cosmetics? Vampire is the best nickname for this dude.
And concerning his career, I really think he did amazing, he’s been working for more than 25 years without big pauses. It is an amazing accomplishment for an actor! He shouldn’t be regretting anything.

  8. don't kill me i'm french says:

Keanu was one of Marvel’s choice to play Dr Strange ( around 2006)

    • Maria says:

The last I heard and just read was that Marvel has not officially announced Cumberbatch for Strange yet.
It would be cool if Keanu got it.

  9. Lucy2 says:

I don’t think he would have been right for either, but it’s probably many actor’s dream to play a comic book character if they liked them as a kid.
His movie did surprisingly well- hopped right over Fury and Gone Girl, despite being in about 500 less theaters than both of them.

  10. jinni says:

So basically he is the male Jessica Biel and is getting passed up for roles because he lacks real talent and is only getting by on his looks and reputation for being nice because he’s too boring and charisma-less to attract an audience .

Maybe hooking up with some famous/semi-famous person would help get some public attention, which would help the audience remember him, generate some interest in his projects and actually make him look desirable to the studios. So, getting with a famemonger like Kelly wouldn’t be too bad an idea.

    • Betty says:

Um, he has never made comments about being too beautiful to be taken seriously. And he has clearly demonstrated he can attract an audience–“Speed,” “Point Break,” “The Matrix,” “Constantine”–need I go on? He’s an aging actor making a transition in his career. He can’t play the parts he once did, but he and Jessica Biel are hardly in the same league. And I like Jessica (blame “7th Heaven”), but she was never nearly as successful as Keanu.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •jinni•

Except Keanu is now 50 years old and if he wanted to be tabloid fodder, he could have back in the day when he was a serious box office draw. He didn’t want it then and I seriously doubt he wants it now.

Plus, Keanu *can* act. I’m not sure what ‘magic button’ you press to GET him to actually act but he can do it. Check out reviews of his ‘Hamlet’ (not joking either critics were beside themselves at his brilliance) or his supporting roles in ‘The Gift’ (he was very dark and very intense) or the lighter movie ‘Something’s Gotta Give’. Again, I’d love to find the formula to get him to act because it’s awesome when he does…

      • notasugarhere says:

LS, I’ll add Walk in the Clouds and The Replacements to that list, with some scenes from Much Ado About Nothing.

  11. Mia4S says:

Wolverine? No. But I still love you Keanu.

Batman? In Joel Shumacher-verse sure, anyone could have been Batman. Maybe even with Burton, but in the Nolan movies? No way. The intensity is not there. But I still love you Keanu. 😉

  12. sigh((s)) says:

Awww… I like him but…..he can’t act his way out a wet paper bag. Even a poorly written superhero role is out of his range, bless his heart.

  13. J-G says:

I’m glad to see him here. Still love him. I hope with the success of John Wick he gets more high profile movies. I went to see it Friday in the afternoon and it was me and a bunch of guys in the theater — but still decently filled for 3 p.m. showing.

  14. Ciria says:

I love him forever and ever.
    John Wick was really good.
    He is aging really well.
I would totally let him play Batman… in my pants. 🙂

  15. Someonestolemyname says:

Love Keeanu. I’m a fan, I’d go see him in anything.

Loved him since the Paula Abdul video.

  16. SamiHami says:

I just wish he would SHAVE! He looks like he has mange. He obviously can’t grow a full beard and that patchy mess is just, well, a patchy mess. Besides, he has a great face…why cover it up?

    • mytbean says:

I think part of it is to cover some signs of aging that he’d rather not have surgically altered. He’d gained (and still has) some weight from his 40s and may have a little sag and in some images where he’s clean shaven it shows. And, it’s getting winter so he may like a face cozy. And maybe this particular scraggle is for John Wick.

  17. Nanea says:

“People keep asking me if I’m back and I haven’t really been able to give them an answer. But now? Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back.”
So happy for Keanu that ‘John Wick’ put him back on the map.

Proud K-Fan badge wearer here. The ‘friend’ is his goddaughter.

    • AlexandriaTheGreat says:

People keep asking me if Keanu Reeves is back and I haven’t really been able to give them an answer. But now? Yeah, I’m thinking he’s back!

Haha John Wick (aka Babba Yaga) was an EXCELLENT film. No shaking camera, solid plot, not overdone, and Keanu in his element lookin like a fine, grown ass man in a tailored suit just killin it (and ALL of the bad guys).

The next film you see NEEDS to be John Wick–trust me.

  18. GeeMoney says:

He may not be the best actor in the world… but he’s very likable and I enjoy watching him on screen. He strikes me as a good guy overall, too.

  19. Ruyana says:

Saw ‘John Wick’ Monday. Loved it. Keanu sobs on screen, I could never do that – too repressed. It was a really good movie and I was glad because “47 Ronin” was the worst piece of crap he’s ever been in. Anyway, I think he’s a better actor than people give him credit for, he just has his own style.

    • LadySlippers says:

47 Ronin was sorta okay. I lived in Japan and have a soft spot for all the Japanese.

But tell my *why* John Wick is good — I wanna know! Please?!???

      • allheavens says:

        @LadySlippers

It’s a very stylish, thrilling and almost cathartic film. It’s a slow burn to ruthless, relentless, remorseless vengeance. I would compare it to “The Raid” in style, no it’s not the masterpiece that film was, but it is very good.

        Here’s a quote from EW:
“The shots are clean. The choreography is clean. The acting is clean. There’s a remarkable efficiency and clarity on display here—no shaky cam, no absurd death-defying stunts other than the statistical improbability of one man’s preternatural talent for delivering headshots without receiving any.”

That’s pretty dead on in my opinion.

  20. Ag says:

love keanu. he looks fantastic, for 50 or any age. vampire indeed. also love his outfit in those pics. take notes, hipster-wannabes (ehm, justin t.) – that’s how you do casual cool.

  21. mytbean says:

I always think it’s funny that people claim Keanu has no acting skills but his acting didn’t seem to interfere with an audience’s ability to suspend belief through three films dominated by CGI, abstract concepts and bizarre costumes. We believed all that crap was viable because his acting convinced us it could be.

And, have you ever had to fain emotion at a ping ball ball on a stick for hours on end, every day for years? Have you ever had to hold a straight face while performing martial arts in costumes that make fart noises the entire time?

How people can claim Keanu is a dead pan actor, but felt riveted during Speed, I just don’t know. We love seeing him paired up with actresses because he conveys sensuality. We love seeing him in action because we believe he’s feeling the adrenaline too. What is it that people think he’s not able to convey??

People say he’s emotionally taciturn on screen but Daniel Craig, who looks like a Mr. Potato Head stuck in a permanent Blue Steel gets nods. Christian Bale, who I swear has had his body deadened from the neck up and has had his mouth wired mostly shut, speaking like Wesley Snipes from Blade his entire acting career gets rave reviews.

Part of me is beginning to suspect that these deadpan, no talent actors are all part of a casting couch that Keanu is not.

  22. Hannah says:

He is such a cute man he really ages so well. I will always love Neo!!

  23. Jess says:

I still love him, he seems very genuine and he’s just adorable. I’d love to see him in more roles.

  24. Someonestolemyname says:

I think he’s actually a good actor, I think its more Keeanu’s speech pattern that is the problem, not his acting.

I personally don’t think George Clooney even with his Oscars is a good actor, I think he’s just smart enough to pick roles where he can continually play himself well.
It became obvious for me when Clooney was in Gravity how distracting his acting is, it’s basically personality driven. I didnt find his acting good in Gravity at all.

    • Granger says:

My dad has always called Harrison Ford and George Clooney “the greatest non-actors who ever lived.” Wise man, my dad. 😉

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Someonestolemyname•

Yup! When he looses his speech pattern you can see him act. That might be the ‘magic button’ I referred to up thread. 😃

  25. Sister Carrie says:

Thank you for posting my celluloid husband again!
Although, if this Kelly Brook thing has any truth to it, I may have to leave him for ASkars.

  26. Ginger says:

Nope I can’t see him as Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is just too good in that role. I can’t see him as Batman in the Nolan films either. BUT perhaps in Batman V Superman? I just can’t get behind Ben Affleck in that role. I’d like more Keanu on the big screen so bring it on! I’m going to see John Wick this weekend. As for dating Kelly Brook, at least physically they would be a HOT couple. However, given that she usually dates DB’s I doubt that this is true unless she’s had some sort of epiphany and suddenly decided to date nice men

  27. Allegra says:

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Keanu will star in the Sci-Fi Film ‘Replicas’.
    I´m so happy for him!

  28. Hissyfit says:

No, Batman and Wolverine isn’t the right role for him but i get why he’d love to do big, franchise movies. I’ve always liked him even if he always look sad. I hope he gets more job offers and I hope he finds love despite all the bad luck his love life department has gotten in the past.

  29. Bread and Circuses says:

Love Keanu; he seems like a genuinely kind and nice person.

But as an actor, I think he does better with roles where he plays someone reserved, introverted, and maybe feeling a little hunted. For example, I thought he was fantastic in Dangerous Liaisons and The Matrix, but I found him unconvincing in Speed. It was a nice change to see a more understated action movie hero in Speed, but for me, he didn’t really sell that role.

  30. JM says:

Am I the only one hoping Keanu and Sandra Bullock will finally get together and live happily ever after?

  31. Ag-UK says:

I would like someone to tell me as I am from the U.S. but live in the UK, how can a no talent Kelly Brook without substantial income ( just saying as she hasnt done anything really that I know of) remain I. The U.S. it seems forever and aleays in the papers??! I guess they are giving out O visas to anyone these days. So no he’s not the best actor but liked Street Kings but no to that hook up he’d never be taken seriously unless he wants people laughing behind his back. I can’t wait for John Wick to come here next year I bet.

    • Cel says:

I too would love to know how Kelly “no talent” Brook can get a long term visa for the US.

I think this Kelly/Keanu story has been cooked up by her. She is only known these days for stories about her relationships. I can’t imagine once Keanu’s team found out more about her, he would continue contact, if there was any to begin with.

  32. Kanye's Dimple says:

I still remember him and River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho. He seems really lovely; he shared his bonus from The Matrix box office earnings among the crew. He should try for Liam Neeson’s late-stage action career with something less comic-bookish like the Taken franchise. I don’t see him as Wolverine or Batman or a standard comic-book hero; he’s too low key as an actor for that; and that’s a compliment.
