Emma Watson in Balenciaga at the BAFTA LA Awards: lovely or poorly styled?

Here are some photos from last night’s 2014 BAFTA Los Angeles Jaguar Britannia Awards in Beverly Hills. The turnout was so-so. I’m sort of disappointed that many of our favorite British people didn’t show up, but hey, they got Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo and Judi Dench! Judi Dench never comes out for any of these shows, so this is actually an event! The biggest fashion headline from this event was Emma Watson in this Balenciaga ensemble. It reminds me of something Kristen Stewart would wear. Eh. I’m seen Emma do better, but this is far from offensive. I like that she’s wearing pants, but I would have loved to see her in something more awards-carpet-y. Emma received the British Artist of the Year Award. Judi Dench received the Albert Broccoli Worldwide Contribution Award.

Here’s Hailee Steinfeld in a Roksanda Illinic dress and Charlotte Olympia clutch. She’s such a pretty young woman!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honored for “excellence in comedy.” People really love Veep, don’t they? I like it and I like Julia, but I don’t think it’s the funniest thing ever. She looks stunning in this gown! Also: she’s a vampire. She’s 53 years old!

Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey were there, and they spent a lot of time with RDJ’s bud Mark Ruffalo and Mark’s wife Sunrise. RDJ won the Stanley Kubrick Award. That photo of Mark holding Robert is pretty special, right?

    Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks fantastic!

That top on Emma Watson – no.

  2. Abbott says:

Emma always wears the sh*t out of a pair of pants. Love it.

    • Senaber says:

I’m obsessed with that necklace on Emma. At first I thought it was strands of hair and I hated it. But it’s creative, delicate, interesting. I like it a lot.

  3. kri says:

Emma is lovely, but this look is meh. I love the man love of RDJ and The Ruffalo. I must say, Susan Downey looks amazing.

  4. InvaderTak says:

    ick the pants! The horror!

Why does Fluffalo hug people from behind? Is this like Chrevans and the boob grab?

    • Lilacflowers says:

He does seem to do that a lot, doesn’t he?

      • InvaderTak says:

He does. The ‘net has noticed it too. Search “Mark Ruffalo hug” in google images and the results are hilarious.

(and yes, that’s how little I have to do today! Hooray for vacation!)

      • Pandora says:

Omg, thanks for that InvaderTak! It’s too cute and funny.
“that’s how little I have to do today!” Well, we are two then XD I just wasted a good time on the net, looking at these adorable pictures. And I regret nothing.

Robert and Mark are just too cute. I wonder how Robert’s other boyfriend Jude Law is dealing with it. I hope he is not too jealous. (Nah is probably too busy making babies).

  5. serena says:

Oh god, I love some Downey-Ruffalo love!

On another note, I don’t really like Emma’s outfit. I don’t dig black and white but this was really plain. Still, she’s always beautiful.
    Yay for Judi Dench!

    • Katenotkatie says:

I think Emma looks a bit silly and try-hard next to Judi, because The Dame brings it just by showing up. She’s Judi Effing Dench, she doesn’t need bright pink lipstick.

  6. Jaderu says:

I finally watched The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and loved it.
Judi Dench is Everything. There I said it.
It’s going to be so weird not having her in the Bond movies now.

  7. jammypants says:

    RDJ and Ruffalo are adorable.

  8. Reece says:

It’s cute and cocktail. It’s also the lipstick to me. Not a fan of anything that sherbert with black and white. And gold.
I like Hallie’s dress the most.

  9. QQ says:

I still don’t see the big fuss about Emma and I feel that is sacrilege to say out loud.. I mean.. I don’t find her that AMAZING an actress or OMG LOOOK AT HER .. her clothes don’t give me a boner or a horror face and her features always seem mousy-unremarkable petite girl THEN AGAIN I’m not a Harry Potter movie watcher (cause i’m still holding off on the books?) so maybe that’s why I’m overcome with *shrug* when i see her?

I love Julia to Death… but this dress and hair … Ugh .. she looks like Elvira’s younger sister

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Love your new picture!

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I completely agree QQ–she can’t act, she’s cute, but nothing *special*, and she doesn’t have AMAZING style moments–her best style moments were in the promo tour for the last HP movie when she had her pixie cut–and they are either generally okay or downright ugly (like this look would’ve been so much better with a plain white chiffon or silk blouse). The best thing she’s got going for her, in my mind, is her gig with the UN, and talking about feminism. Other than that, she’s really done nothing but bitch about how the fashion industry is so not eco friendly (when she has millions of dollars and can easily start her own website with eco friendly designers and put them on a pay roll–but that doesn’t make $$ like fashion contracts). She’s really nothing special to me, in fact she ruins movies for me because she CAN’T act. Urgh.

    • sarah says:

Let’s see if she keeps up with the UN stuff 5 years from now. I’m sure she is loving the attention/awards she is getting from it. So far it’s all talk but we shall see how long this lasts.

      • QQ says:

Virgilia, Sarah… that’s another thing… the commentariat seems extra eager to protect and give chances to her also.. I guess is the attachment to the role?

      • Etheldreda says:

She’s a ‘well bred’ English girl from the right social class. That counts for a lot. You see the same thing with Keira Knightley, another hopeless actress who keeps getting major roles.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

@Etheldreda (where’d you find that name, it’s rather interesting), QQ
Haha, I actually enjoy Keira Knightley’s movies–but I don’t really consider her to be a great talent either. She’s not horrible to me, just sort of mediocre, but with enough charisma to get by, and she doesn’t over extend herself too much. The only movie I’ve ever flat out not liked her in was that spanking movie she did with Fassy. Basically because I saw no point in her character–nothing that made her stand out, other than the fact that she was a main character, and she was getting spanked by Fassy.

QQ, she does seem to get a ton of chances. And there’s a lot of interest in her, to succeed from HW and the fashion industry. I could see if she was Jennifer Lawrence, who’s actually proven that she can headline a major blockbuster franchise AND do dramatic work AND do normal, every day movies (I liked her in The House At The End of The Street) where not much acting talent is required i.e. likeable, but for Emma?

She hasn’t done anything ‘big’ since Harry Potter. Hasn’t been in any standout film, or gotten standout reviews, where people have been buzzing about her performance–not to my recollection. She’s okay. But she’s got a ton of people gunning for her because she went to college. Which, sure. But chica CANNOT ACT. Seriously. Daniel Radcliffe is the only one of the three that I think can act…..

      • Etheldreda says:

        VC,

I reckon Emma and Kiera are about equal with regards to their level of charisma and acting abiity — ie close to zero. Keira has ruined many a film for me, and unlike Emma, she keeps getting cast in plum roles in major films, which is seriously annoying.

As for my screen name, ‘Ethelreda’ is an old Anglo-Saxon name which I’ve always thought sounds pretty cool. There was even a medieval king called ‘Ethelred the Unready’!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @Ethelreda
To be fair, I saw KK in the Pirates movies, Bend it Like Beckham (YEARS ago), and The Duchess, and the spanking movie. She doesn’t *ruin* a movie for me, but I definitely do not see a movie trailer with her in it and say I HAVE TO SEE IT! I think she’s a little better than Emma, because she doesn’t completely bore me, but still….

    • lucy2 says:

I haven’t really seen her in anything, so I have no opinion of her as an actress. As a person, I like that she pursued an education, and she seems smart, well adjusted, and outspoken on stuff that matters to her.

I love Julia and think VEEP is hilarious, but I agree this is not her best look.

    • OhDear says:

I think it’s more that a lot of people see themselves in her Harry Potter character (the smart but a bit nerdy girl) and that got projected onto EW herself. IMO, she’s (her public image) the female equivalent to Henry Cavill – nice enough, attractive, but not particularly talented or charismatic. TBH, if it wasn’t for that UN speech I thought she was going to end up as one of those mocktress types.

  10. L says:

Dame Judy is everything. Love her.

  11. Angie says:

I’m going to be bitchy but they gave awards to Robert Downey Jr, Judy Dench, Mark Ruffalo….And Emma Watson? One of these things is not like the others. They had a nice group of winners but is this award kind of prestigious? Because she got “British artist of the year” when she had a supporting role in only one movie in 2014. “Noah” underwhelmed at the box office, and she wasn’t even a standout.
Her career is not bad, she has already worked with Sofia Coppola and Darren Aronofsky, so she is doing better than I thought she would, because she was terrible as Hermione, imo. She has improved but I still think she is a very limited and overrated actress, she tends overacts and doesn’t seem natural on screen. Or it’s because the award was presented by Burberry and she used to be the face of the brand? Girlfriend always had a good PR team, I think she and Tom Hiddleston share the same agent.

They should wait a little longer to start giving these kind of awards to young actors, imo. They started giving prestigious awards to Jennifer Lawrence when she was 22 and had been in like 6 movies. Emma had only 3 supporting roles since Harry Potter ended. But 2015 seems better for her , she has 3 upcoming roles – in Regression, Colonia and Lala land – and they seem more interesting, they should have given the award next year.

    • AliceAyres says:

Past winners of the British Artist of the year are: Rachel Weisz, her Highness Tilda Swinton, HBC, Michael Sheen, Daniel Craig, Kate Winselt, Emily Blunt and Benedict Cumberbatch. I am sorry, but Emma Watson’s CV is not anywhere close to those actors and like Angie said: her year has not been remarkable. Maybe they give her the award for her UN speech and not for acting?

      • Couiny says:

I also thought it was for her her UN speech but the winners were announced before it, if I remember correctly. I think she has just a good PR team, she has a burberry connection and Harry Potter is very british so maybe the bafta wanted to give her something. Also she was the most photographed at the event, so it’s also help.

But it’s sure as an actress she is nothing as the precedent winners. She was in a big YA franchise, so she is overrated like a lot of celebrities in hollywood. It’s frustrating when several true good actors remain underrated because they are less famous and fame hungry.

I read several comments who were saying it was even more ridiculous when Felicity Jones and Gugu MBatha-Raw were also at the award. They are not famous and popular like Watson, but they had a better and they can act. I hope they got some awards for The theory of everything and Belle, they were really good.

Keira Knightley winning “British of the year” would have made more sense. She has 4 movies this year, and oscar buzz for the imitation game. And she also has a bigger cv.

      • Couiny says:

It’s even worse when you look at the past winners. WTF, their choice is so random and ridiculous this year. It’s not the people choice or MTV award, if you look at the list of winners they aim for more prestigious. So it’s weird they want to give it to a young actress who only played like 5 different roles and never gave a great performance. It’s just too early. I wonder how they negotiate this kind of things behind the scenes. She is famous so it helps with the ratings?

But then, there is award buzz for Channing Tatum and Kristen Stewart this year (even Jennifer Aniston is trying), so I will give her a break. And liked her UN speech even if it was not groundbreaking.

  12. Couiny says:

The lovely Gugu Mbatha-Raw was at the award too. She is so pretty and talented, I’m happy to see her on more red carpet. She was amazing in the period movie “Belle”, I have such a girl crush on her now. I hope she has a good career, and more opportunities because knowing how hollywood works it won’t be super easy for her.

Emma was adorable when she posed with Judi Dench on red carpet, but her ensemble is boring. Black and white, again. Still great that she wore pants, she used to wear a lot of the same kind of cocktail dresses, so a little change is nice sometimes. She also looks thinner to me, she seems more fragile than several years ago.
Also, Emma’s speech was kind of cute and weird. She talked about her pet who died during the filming of the first harry potter and the crew made a little coffin for her hamster. Then she dedicated her award to Millie the hamster. It was so random XD

    • lucy2 says:

I haven’t seen Belle yet (want to though) but I remember her from the TV show she had that got cancelled. She is really pretty and I liked her in the show a lot. Looks like she has some good stuff coming up, I too hope her career goes well.

  13. sarah says:

Emma is bland and boring. Her eyebrow “acting” is so distracting. What is she getting the award for anyway?? Because she hasn’t even proven herself yet.

  14. blu says:

    I really like RDJ’s suit.

  15. maddelina says:

Love Emma’s whole ensemble. She’s gorgeous!

  16. kls2686 says:

    Science Bros FTW!!

  17. Bob7 says:

Hailee Steinfeld. She’s such a pretty young woman!

Err, no. She hideous, so she must have some good tribal connections.
