Justin Timberlake’s ‘curated’ home design website quietly closed: predictable?

justintimberlake
As someone who shops online often, I take issue with overpriced “curated” celebrity shopping websites like Goop, Preserve, et. al. It’s not that difficult to visit the daily sale sites (RueLala, MyHabit and Ideel are my favorites but there are so many more) and the home decor sites or even Amazon, Etsy and Overstock to find nice things that fit your own personal style. For me that’s part of the fun of dressing and decorating: finding individual pieces. I’ll occasionally purchase something a celebrity wears or recommends but I keep in mind that they get that stuff for free and make good money promoting it.

So that’s why I’m kind of laughing at the fact that Justin Timberlake’s home design website, HomeMint.com, has closed. Timberlake opened the site with his interior designer, Estee Stanley, under the umbrella of other “Mint” sites curated by celebrities. There’s JewelMint, by Kate Bosworth and stylist Cher Coulter, Stylemint by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, and ShoeMint by Rachel Bilson and stylist Nicole Chavez, among others. (I’ve never heard of any of those sites and I’m a shopping addict who runs a celebrity blog.)

In an interview last year with ElleDecor, Timberlake and Stanley explained that the BeachMint company “came to us with the opportunity” to run the site. He also said that he loves to obsess over the details of decorating and will “Literally, for hours, sit and compare hardware.” Well it looks like Timberlake’s time has opened up, since he doesn’t have to curate for Homemint any longer:

Justin Timberlake can scratch interior design guru off his resume. His decor website, HomeMint, claims to be taking a “staycation” – but according to a source, the site is kaput. “Justin is far from a decorating, and people didn’t flock to buy his designs,” the insider explains. “He’s disappointed.” One problem was the site’s membership fee – $10 a month – just for the privilege of viewing $140 throw pillows and $100 baskets curated by Justin. “Everything was overpriced,” groused one customer. “It was all stuff you could’ve found elsewhere for a lot less.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition, November 17, 2014]

$10 a month just to be able to shop does sound steep when the same items are available on other sites for cheaper. So maybe it’s not on Justin that this failed. He probably doesn’t care, he’s got his music career, a new baby on the way, and a successful fashion line with his best friend. Plus Justin really wants to act, that’s his true ambition although you know how that’s working out for him.

While I sideeye most of the celebrity shopping sites, especially the “lifestyle” sites, there are a few celebrities working in niche markets who are really killing it. Kate Hudson’s Fabletics is an athletic clothing site which offers monthly workout outfits for about $50. The prices are steep but not outrageous and the clothes are cute. Jessica Alba has The Honest Company which has monthly eco-friendly baby, home and child product deliveries. In those cases the celebrities are offering products they know and care about in a specific category. Justin Timberlake and home decorating are kind of a mismatch.

Awesome header pic! And somebody please explain his eyebrow situation to me immediately. I feel like he’s overwaxing a bit.

    • Kiddo says:

      They are carefully ‘curated’.

      • mimif says:

I want to take a sharpie to them and fill in the middle. It’s upsetting the whole balance if his face and I am being very serious about this. It’s troubling me. Maybe I’m autistic like Seinfeld.

      • Kiddo says:

Minus the hair, I am totally getting this vibe from the above photo, with the eyebrows and eye expression:

*I think the direction turned dark, after the clown shoes.*

      • mimif says:

Ha! And yeah….things went dark when I learned about Murray. *sad face* #cantgetoveritsoimpunishingallofyou

      • Kiddo says:

What ABOUT MURRAY Forcrissakes? Just spill it.

      • mimif says:

Well I’m not sure what to think. Do you remember on BILL MURRAY HAD THE BEST TIME EVER AT KLOONEY’S WEDDING post, a commenter suggested he had beaten his wife, and I got somewhat temperamental and was all, nfw dude, you is misinformed. Then randomly, I found this:

        http://www.celebitchy.com/12613/bill_murrays_divorce_is_finalized_with_no_more_mudslinging/

I never heard any of that. Have you? He cannot be everything to me if this is true. *cries into futon*

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah, not being an apologist, but at that time, I looked up this:
        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/09/jennifer-butler-murray-bi_n_105978.html

I think that the domestic abuse issues were the consequence of everyone being f-ed up, or maybe leverage in a divorce, or maybe true. Not sure. I did hear him say that you have to be a complete person before you marry someone and I think he has enough self-awareness at least to acknowledge he’s not ‘complete’. Definitely not a good situation for those kids, but I’d bet this situation was a dysfunctional tango.

Anyway, The Bill Murray Committee is about the celebrity persona and ROBYNSING and her exuberance in posting, even more than Bill Murray. Kind of how FRANCO became a thing, in spite of FRANCO.

      • mimif says:

By all means, be an apologist because I was gutted when I stumbled across that. It was the “I should have killed you when I had the chance” but that threw me for a loop. But yeah, messed up situation all the way around. I loathe romanticising celebrities, or anyone for that matter, as we are all flawed, but ROBYNSING aside, Murray really was my man. He was EVERYTHING. Shit, I sound like a fuhreak! Ah well, back to idolizing dead people, it is. 😉

      • Kiddo says:

I think it’s really not safe to idolize any human, not just celebrities. But there are so MANY really shitty people in control of things, it makes one desperate to find decency and to expect it without any dimension, since the bad appear pretty one dimensional sometimes.

      • mimif says:

Yeah, I totally agree with everything you just wrote and I was completely joking about idolizing dead people. It just seems like they are the only ones who are interesting to me anymore. Oh well, we will always have Chomsky. 😉

I am “curating” a new site called BreathMint, cause the Tiny Timber leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I am so sick of all of this curating going on. It is gratuitous and annoying. I also just re-read that first sentence, and realize it could be totally misinterpreted. Oh, well.

    • mimif says:

      *passes Listerine to naughty kri*

    • Exactly. Do NOT talk to me about “curating” anything unless you work in a museum and want to discuss dinosaur bones. As for this hipster, small-batch b.s. that has swept the planet….that is what Ebay and ETSY are for…and it is way more authentic and a hell of a lot cheaper.

  3. lower-case deb says:

    the internetz haz been CUREDATED!
hallelujah! and pass me dem chezburgers

  4. Hawkeye says:

If it hadn’t been for this reporting of Justin Timberlake’s website closing, I wouldn’t have known he even had one.

    • lucy2 says:

Me too. Never heard of any of these “mint” sites, so perhaps they need to do some better marketing. Or not.

  5. Cindy says:

Blech. Everything about this guy sets my teeth on edge.

  6. Gingercrunch says:

    Oh puhleez!

  7. Bridget says:

I know that when I think “Justin Timberlake” I think “home design”

I’m curious how Fabletics does in the long term, since they drive a lot of subscribers to their service with the initial $25 outfit offer, but I wonder how many cancel soon after.

  8. Mira says:

Why oh why couldn’t JC Chasez be the more famous one? JT skeeves me out and just seems like a jerk.

We could still be basking in the glory of JC’s amazing turtlenecks!!! http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/2014-08/18/19/enhanced/webdr04/enhanced-19295-1408405368-9.jpg

  9. shay says:

I’ve heard of and bought stuff from some of the mints – stylemint and jewelmint – but I never heard of homemint, or maybe i just didn’t pay attention. Anyways, if they operate like any other mint sites, then the $10 fee can be skipped every month, it’s not obligatory. Otherwise, you would be charged and the credit can be applied to a future purchase. However, they just changed their policy this month and skipping is no longer required as they are not automatically deducting “fees” or “credits” anymore.

  10. Rhiley says:

Yeah, I can see Aniston shilling a Home Decor site, but Timberlake? Makes no sense.

  11. OTHER RENEE says:

I can’t with this stupid word “curated” already! I just CAN’T!

  12. lucy2 says:

I’m kind of amazed at the whole monthly subscription to shop thing. Looks like Fabletics does it too? I don’t understand the point, when you can browse almost every other shopping site for free. I wonder how many people sign up for stuff like that, forget about it, and get charged for a few months before they realize it.

  13. Jesssayin says:

As a member of the mints I should point out they just changed their policy and no longer charge you on a monthly basis and you need not skip every first of the month.

    The people have been heard!!

  14. Amy says:

I think he never really cared about that stuff. If he is interested (like in his tequila), he promotes. Maybe he was helping out a friend like with his clothing line. He sold the golf court, now closed the website. Maybe he wants to focus on being a father if Jessica is pregnant?

  15. cr says:

I think this launched in 2011, a year after JewelMint (Bosworth hasn’t been involved in it for two years). Jessica Simpson also had BeautyMint, but that appears to be dead as well.

  16. GinPlease says:

HomeMint went on hiatus in September 2013, which I guess just goes to share how little the world cared.
