Anne Hathaway on a solo Catwoman film: ‘I would be totally up for doing it’

FFN_Interstellar_PC_IMG_111014_51580544

Here are some photos of Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey promoting Interstellar in Shanghai today. I guess Jessica Chastain wasn’t invited? Which is weird, because Jessica is contractually obligated to ONLY promote Interstellar for the next six weeks. Anyway, I’m not crazy about Annie’s photocall or premiere looks here. My opinion – and I hope this won’t become more fodder for The Poor Bullied Annie Hathaway Campaign – is that Annie’s style has taken a major hit since she stopped working with Rachel Zoe. It’s too bad. Theirs was a prosperous union.

Anyway, did you know that Anne sort of wants to do a stand-alone Catwoman film with Christopher Nolan? Sigh…

IGN recently spoke to Anne Hathaway at the Interstellar junket, and with female-led superhero movies Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel now in the works, we asked the actress if the time is right to get a standalone Catwoman flick off the ground.

“I would be totally up for doing it” she explained “If Chris [Nolan] was involved. For me, the thing that made doing that part particularly fun was that she existed in his Gotham. Without him I don’t think it would be the same thing. But I also wonder about that part. If because she’s a thief, it’s not better to have her be a small part in a larger film. So she can go through and steal aspects of the film. But when the focus is squarely on her, I don’t know if it works as well.”

We then asked Hathaway if she’d be keen on bringing the character back to cameo in one of DC’s many other forthcoming films…

“Oh yeah that’d be fun. I’d definitely love that. I want to play her again. I don’t know – this is just speculation, because I do think about it sometimes – I think she’s got an amazing backstory and it would be great to see her get her own film. But I don’t know – she is someone who… mystery serves her well so I don’t know what a whole film would do. But who knows?”

[From IGN]

I might have to turn in my Feminism Says We Need More Lead Roles For Women card, because I sort of agree with her. I think Catwoman works when she’s playing off of strong men, antiheroes or villains, what have you. She’s more interesting in combination with other people/stories. I’m not sure many people would really care about another stand-alone Catwoman movie, especially after Halle Berry sort of ruined that concept. Plus, I get the feeling that some people are still mad that Annie was ever cast as Catwoman. I always liked that choice though, and I honestly thought she was the best part of The Dark Knight Rises.

PS… I love all of the body language analysis on Anne and Matthew during this promotional tour. I agree, he can’t stand her.

I’d be up for a Cat Woman sequel with Anne Hathaway, but with Halle Berry’s Cat Woman cast: Sharon Stone, Michael Fassbender and Alex Borstein…

  2. Loopy says:

Yes people were mad, honestly she did not pull it off as far as I am concerned her trying to be sexy was uncomfortable, totally unconvincing. Not everyone can pull of the sultry and sexy roles.

    • Val says:

+1 She’s awkward and nothing near sexy or athletic.

    • Tapioca says:

She was better than I thought, but all the way through I kept wondering what an Eva Green could have done with the role.

I’m guessing Hollywood is unconvinced about this kind of movie since the last lot of solo comic book female action hero films all flopped horribly – Elektra, Catwoman & Aeon Flux.

    • sarah says:

She is a decent actress, not horrible but not AMAZING like everyone likes to act. Her “sexy” seems tryhard.

  3. annaloo. says:

I liked Hathaway as Catwoman, I’d be on board for it!

    • FingerBinger says:

No. If Halle Berry couldn’t pull it off then Anne Hathway definitely can’t pull it off. Halle has way more sex appeal than Anne and her Catwoman movie was terrible. They should have done a Catwoman movie with Michelle Pfeiffer when they had the chance. Now that was a good Catwoman.

      • Lex says:

Halle Berry couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag. Catwoman can have more of an identity than just being sexy, ya know. What about being cunning and strong and resourceful and intelligent? Happy for more female leads so go for it Anne!

Jessica chastain was at the Governors Awards ceremony this week-end to spend time with …A Most Violent Year casting

    Hathaway looks good

  5. zinjojo says:

I caught Graham Norton on Saturday, and I can say with authority McConaughey hates her. And I don’t think I blame him; I’ve tried to give her the benefit of doubt, but wow, she’s annoying and dominated the couch with stories that were not funny.

    • sigh((s)) says:

Urgh. I thought she was not completely annoying until she started cuddling with Lena Dunham during Micky Flanagan’s bit. How incredibly rude. You had your turn, show some respect.

    • Void says:

I just watched her 2013 Oscar press conference, the one that the winners do right after their acceptance speeches, while holding their awards.

Some journalist asked her about the “it came true” thing in her acceptance speech. Anyone who’s not convinced that she’s absolutely annoying should check out her infantile and self-absorbed reply, one that made my skin crawl with utter embarrassment for her.

If she were a guy, I’d be judging her the same way. She’s the single most annoying celebrity in recent memory. People don’t dislike her because she’s rich and famous; they can’t stand her because she’s immature and infatuated with herself and can’t summon the smallest bit of self-control over her self-absorption.

  6. lunchcoma says:

Well, that’s nice of her to say, but it wouldn’t work at all. Chris Nolan isn’t making Batman films anymore. DC has moved on, Ben Affleck is Batman, and if they do a Catwoman movie, the role is going to be recast. That has nothing to do with women in leading roles, it’s just the nature of a reboot.

    But nice try, Anne.

  7. Sam says:

The only Catwoman I’m interested in seeing again is Michelle Pfeiffer. Nobody since has even gotten close to that. Anne didn’t do a terrible job, but a stand-alone movie? Eh, no.

    • lisa2 says:

I think they missed the boat with Michelle. But back then they didn’t see woman as the Super Hero.. hell they don’t now really.

Angelina would have killed it. Mainly because she is never the victim in her films and she doesn’t play second fiddle to the guy even when she is the second fiddle.

My point it is not just about the character but the woman playing her. Can you believe that woman as a stand alone. I don’t think Anne is that woman.

  8. pam says:

Love her hair – much better than the pixie cut.

  9. don't kill me i'm french says:

Matthew McConaughey’s blue suit is awful

  10. Amy says:

I didn’t like her as Catwoman. There wasn’t much for her to do in the movie (kind of how Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character was totally useless too) but I preferred Marion Cotillard’s character to Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman. I never saw the Halle Berry version but I think Anne was miscast in that role. I dunno, I’d rather see Jessica Chastain in that role than Anne.

  11. Dancinnancy says:

As an ensemble castmember, I liked her as Catwoman. No way would I watch her in a stand alone movie. Bale made her tolerable.

  12. Marty says:

Frank Millers’ Catwoman which has Selina starting off as a dominatrix/prostitute/petty thief would work well on screen, especially if it was a darker version.

I’m not here for AnnE’s Catwoman. She wasn’t bad, she just played the role a little too campy for me.

  13. Josefa says:

I agree on Anne being the best part about The Dark Knight Rises, which I liked more than The Dark Knight (good movie, but didn’t live up to the hype imo). But I’m not sure if I’d dedicate a whole film to Catwoman either, as Anne said, she’s better off as a more mysterious character. I’m all for more female action leads, but I can’t see that working with Catwoman.

And even though associating both would be inevitable, people tend to forget Halle’s film was about a woman who gained feline superpowers for some BS reason and had no connection to the DC character Selina Kyle, other than sharing the name.

  14. Kiddo says:

I think MimEf would make the best catwoman.

  15. Observer says:

She was a terrible Catwoman, sorry.
Michelle was much better, even Halle IMO got the “essence” of Catwoman better than Anne and with the right script I think Halle would have been much better.
The best so far is Michelle.

  16. gobo says:

Nope. While she didn’t fail miserably as catwoman I didn’t pick up anything feline in her. It’s a great role which she delivered mediocrity to.

    • Josefa says:

I think that’s because of the way the character was written. I guess Nolan just didn’t want to link her too much with cats because that would make the character somewhat campy. She’s actually never called “Catwoman” in the film.

Anne wouldn’t be my first choice for the role but she was much better than I expected. I’d probably pick someone like Natalie Dormer. She’s got this devilish sexy look to her. She’s even got feline-like features if you think about it, lol.

  17. Observer says:

Angelina Jolie, who I generally think is a bad actress, would have been a good Catwoman. If she was younger I could see her as Selina Kyle/Catwoman.
Would love to see a latina play her though, since Selina Kyle is supposedly latina.

  18. Lila says:

Ugh. Pass. I don’t like her personally, and didn’t enjoy her as catwoman.

I can think of other superheroes I’d sooner spin off. A Black Widow/Hawkeye movie I’d totally be down for!

  19. sarah says:

She sucked as Catwoman just like Halle Berry but unlike Halle, AnnE is NOT SEXY!

  20. holly hobby says:

Looks like Matthew M put on enough weight that now his face looks better. Something was really off around his eyes after he lost all that weight. I’m glad he’s starting to look like he used to.

  21. Void says:

She does the flinty thing well and that’s about it. That character in Brokeback Mountain – that’s her. She was okay in Interstellar but I can’t remember her as Catwoman at all. Her problem here will probably be the fact that studio execs and casting agents know people can’t stand her. So will you pay to sit through two hours of full on Anne Hathaway? It’d bomb.
I saw a bit of Graham Norton and yes, Matthew Mcconaughey looked very annoyed at I-need-to-be-the-centre-of-attention Anne Hathaway.

  22. LAK says:

If i’d never seen Eartha Kitt, Julie Newmar or Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, then I’d be open to AnnE as Catwoman.

  23. Sam says:

The photo of her solo in Chanel and bright red lip is fantastic, so much better than the top photo used here of her looking pallid in the limp Lanvin getup.

And I’ve seen many photos of her and Matt McC in China and elsewhere on the tour and they are smiling and talking, getting on just fine – he’s been very mellow and not very lively throughout it actually. He’s said nothing but complimentary things about her so why believe he “can’t stand her?”. The Anne-is-disliked-by-Hollywood meme is false and tiresome.

She’s annoying to online factions like us sure, but I’ll wait until one of her real peers (other than Franco) says actual negative things before I believe colleagues dislike her.

And as others said here she never really played “Catwoman”, she played Selina Kyle who was a cat thief in a catsuit. She was never meant to be the character Halle or Michelle Pffeifer played. She was great in TDKR but its correct that a standalone movie with the character probably wouldn’t fly. Not enough backstory or character material.
