Angelina Jolie honors her ‘Unbroken’ lead, cutie Jack O’Connell, at the HFAs

wenn21929003

I was wondering why Angelina Jolie would deign to appear at last night’s Hollywood Film Awards last night, considering Unbroken is still a month and a half away from being released, but I shouldn’t have worried. She only came out to honor her Unbroken lead actor, cutie Jack O’Connell. You’ll have to forgive me, because I’ve never seen Jack’s work before, so this red carpet and show was the first time I’d ever seen him in motion and heard his accent. This boy is ADORABLE. He’s got that naughty-boy/bad-boy thing going on, like a young Michael Fassbender. But Jack’s also going to play the game a little bit, mostly for “Her Ladyship” Angelina. That’s what he called her!! Angelina presented Jack with the New Hollywood Award. Here’s the video.

Angelina is super-serious and it really felt like everybody shut up when she was speaking. I wonder how it feels as a young actor, barely known in Hollywood, to be plucked from relative obscurity to take the lead in a huge Hollywood WWII movie and then to have Angelina Jolie present you with an award? Well, Jack wore it well.

PS… Jack wore Gucci. Angelina’s black wool gown was custom-made Atelier Versace!

She looks tired but gorgeous and I cannot wait to see Unbroken. The trailer looks good and this is the movie the critics are waiting for. Fingers crossed it really is good as it looks on paper.

Jack really is very talented and Angelina seems to have a talent to pick the right people for the right roles.

PS: better leave now before the sanctimonious and hypocritical body shaming brigade arrives. Because apparently it is cruel to fat shame people but thin shaming is acceptable.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

“Thin shaming” certainly exists, and all the “eat a burger” comments are inappropriate, but I don’t think that noticing someone looks too thin is necessarily “shaming.” You noticed it yourself, or you wouldn’t have said anything. I like and admire Angelina, but she had dark circles under her eyes and looked very frail. I’m not “shaming” her. I’m just wondering what’s going on.

And to compare attitudes about being overweight with attitudes about being underweight in our society is simply unrealistic. Study after study shows that people have much more negative attitudes about being overweight. That doesn’t excuse impolite remarks about another person’s body, ever, but please don’t pretend it’s the same thing.

      • Maya says:

As a person who is naturally slim and who has been verbally thin shamed all of my life – I respectfully disagree.

It is as much hurtful to be thin shamed as being fat shamed. It’s equally vile and fat shaming is not worse than thin shaming.

I never ever comment on anyone’s body because I hate any form of body shaming. No one knows another person’s medical history or what they might be going through.

Two years Angelina was brutally thin shamed and what happens few months later? She announced that she has been going to her double masectomy. Same now – she could have had the next step of the operation she talked about. People will never know and yet it doesn’t matter to those people.

      • Bridget says:

@Maya, all bodies are wonderful, and its sad to hear any negative comment about our bodies. I absolutely agree that the comments are just as hurtful for you to hear, but I simply can’t agree that “fat shaming” and “thin shaming” are on equal ground (and either term is kind of ridiculous). “Fat shaming” isn’t just criticising a person’s body, but also has tones implying that the person is unworthy and lesser simply because they’re large. That they’ve done this to themselves and if they have no respect for their own body they don’t deserve to be treated with respect themselves. There’s simply not the same implication with terms like “eat a burger” – which, while offensive, don’t necessarily imply that you should be ashamed of your own body and for making others look at it.

All that being said, fat shaming and thin shaming all have one thing in common: people’s bodies becoming a commodity for others to comment on, as though our appearances are for the sole reason of making people (especially men) happy.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Maya
I think we can just agree that no one should shame anyone about their body. I disagree with some of your points, but I know you to be a well-intentioned and quite a lovely person, and I am truly sorry if people have been unkind to you. I agree with Bridget and it doesn’t seem them same to me, but I have never walked in your shoes, and I can see it is hurtful to you, and that is enough to make me see again how wrong it is.

      • Sozual says:

She has skinny arms. She has to workout to pump up her arms. The rest of her is pretty thick.

      • Lady D says:

        What Maya said.

      • Maya says:

        @Goodnames: don’t worry – I didn’t take it the wrong way.

I have been thin shamed and my sister has been fat shamed so many years. I have seen both side of the pain, hurt, insecurity people go through because of that.

That is why I never comment on anyone’s body simple because I can hurt that person. I might do it with good intentions but the other person might not see that and get hurt.

As long as a person is healthy and weights according to their height and doctor’s recommendation – then the rest of the world can go take a hike.

      • Amy says:

I have been thin-shamed too since I am naturally thin. Fat-shaming and thin-shaming are definitely different but they fall into the same category which is making fun of someone’s appearance. Whether you’re making fun of someone’s acne, someone’s droopy eyelids, someone’s botched plastic surgery etc. It all leads to the same result which produces feelings of shame and embarrassment in the person being made fun of. Fat-shaming isn’t “worse” or on “another level.” The end result is the same.

One year at summer camp a bunch of girls ganged up on me saying I had a disease because I was so thin and made up some bogus disease that I had. Looking back it seems silly I even believed them for a second but I was probably about 7 or 8. Girls are equal opportunity–too fat, too thin, it makes no difference. If you’re being bullied about it, the feelings of unworthiness is the same.

      • mayamae says:

@Sozual, you think Angie looks “thick”? In the south, that’s a euphemism for chubby. I don’t see anything chubby on Angie. If I cover her face and broad shoulders, she could pass for the much smaller framed Cate Blanchett.

I saw that part of the show last night. I paid more attention than I usually would to a woman’s body, because I was pretty sure it would be an argument here. She is extremely thin. But when she was presenting the award, she was a little fidgety and was gripping her hands a lot. Her arms may be very thin, but they are toned. That’s something more difficult to see in pictures. That gives me the impression that even though she looks tired, she’s keeping up with her health.

      • Bridget says:

There’s a difference between making fun of someone and shaming someone. Yes, it can be heartbreaking and traumatizing to be made fun of. But you are not being shamed. You are not being told that you have no worth in our society, that you deserve to be singled out and humiliated. That you are too big for clothing manufacturers to deem worthy to make clothing for, as though your money is tainted by your extra weight. As though you should be ashamed to go out lest others see you. I’m sorry you were made fun of, but still: thin-shaming isn’t the same at all. That would be like saying that it was really hurtful for you to be made fun of because you had braces as a kid and that people shouldn’t orthodontia-shame.

      • Mimz says:

Im overweight and have been for most of my life (now 28), and obviously have been shamed. Torn apart by mean, cruel comments over my looks or pity eyes towards me. Impromptu speeches by random people about what I should be wearing/eating, etc. I have skinny friends who are very sensitive to being called skinny or being told to eat more and etc. I think its horrible to fat shame or skinny shame anyone, and it is the same thing yes, but the degrees of isolation, cruelty, shaming that each “group” suffers are completely different. A skinny girl can be shamed for her body, and yet be admired for it, there are millions of clothing manufacturers such as Abercrombie and Fitch (hope I spelled it right) who worship the tiny frames, cater to them, and at least when a skinny person and a fat person go look for clothes, the skinny will 9/10 times find something cool, trendy, age appropriate, modern and flattering to use. A fat person will not. not before looking in 20 stores.
People will taunt a skinny person, people will mistreat a fat person just for existing. Even exercising is a reason for mockery . You turn on the tv, there will be only programs, actors, adverts, etc for skinny people. Everywhere you look there is an undercover mockery of a fat person. Not the other way around. Well I suppose I am comparing, but that’s not my intention really. I completely sympathize and understand that it is horrible in both cases, but fat shaming is on another level… I’m sorry. it’s so deeply embedded in our society we barely see it anymore.

Anyway. On another note. I looked at Angie and thought she looked a bit pale and a tad sickly. But like someone said, we don’t know what could be going on, or maybe it’s her body type. As long as she’s happy and healthy, that’s all that matters. I don’t think it is skinny shaming her to notice her apparent thin body…

    • SnarkySnarkers says:

Gaaaaah, I totally agree with this comment on one hand but even as a naturally thin person, she doesn’t look healthy. I actually think she looked thinner on television last night than she does in these pictures. The dark circles were bad too 🙁 That said; I know when I’m stressed out, I lose my appetite and skip meals. I think Angelina has said she has a similar reaction to stress so I’m betting thats whats going on. I’m with you on the whole thin shaming/ fat shaming thing though! I get tired of the whole “real woman have curves” movement because it tends to single out the skinny ladies. I think the goal should be healthy, no matter what that looks like on your body type.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think “real women have curves” was well-intentioned but poorly thought out. I think (was it Dove?) was trying to say that not everyone is thin like the models we always see in advertisements, and that “real” as in “typical” or “the average” woman is heavier. Heavier doesn’t sound nice, so they say “curvier.” I think it was meant to say it’s ok not to be model thin, but it was worded in a way that can be taken as women without curvy bodies aren’t “real women.” It’s a shame, because as someone who has struggled with my weight for my adult life, it was nice to see a campaign trying to show that beauty comes in more than one size. But I can see how it could be taken as a put down of thin women, and that’s not nice, either. Again, though, I don’t believe that was the intention.

      • SnarkySnarkers says:

GoodNamesAllTaken: Totally agree! It probably was well intentioned! Its just not always used in the right way. Again, my thought is that the overall goal for anyone, not just woman, is health. If that means you don’t look like a supermodel who account for less than 1% of the population who the hell cares? Health is the most important thing and should be where peoples motivations lie because its about so much more than looking a certain way.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Absolutely agree, my Snarkysnarkers. The goal should be our health. I needed to be reminded of that today, because I was feeling a little discouraged about that “last ten pounds.” But I have been working out like crazy and am feeling much healthier, and that’s the most important thing. Thank you for reminding me!

      • SnarkySnarkers says:

Aw! That made my morning! Thats exactly why I said it because I think its easy to lose site of. Way to go on the weight loss! Just keep your focus on health and you can’t go wrong 🙂

      • BNA FAN says:

I have been a fan of Angelina for about ten years. I must say every time Angelina appears on a Red Carpet or at an award there are always the same comments, Angelina is to thin and she needs to gain 10-20 lbs. So I’m saying nothing new here today. Angelina is a busy woman and I believe she is naturally thin, I would say her weight sometimes goes up and down about five lbs when she is super busy as she is at this time. The fans have to prepare for for the negative comments because it’s nothing new, I have been hearing the same thing for 10 years now.

      • OriginalTessa says:

I think being naturally thin is a concept that people on this board have a hard time grasping. I am naturally thin. Very thin. I eat. I don’t eat like a bird or diet in any way. I eat, just like everyone else does. Probably more because I don’t turn down food for fear of gaining weight.

        Gaining weight…

I can’t. I’ve tried. It doesn’t work. I want a strong, fit, Bar Rafaeli type body. I want to have a bit of a tush and some muscle and a small bit of beef. I have none. I succeed for a while. I get stronger, I gain a few pounds of muscle, I feel good…

Then life gets in the way and I lose focus or get stressed out and don’t pay attention to my body for a while, and guess what? I LOSE weight. I actually get even thinner, with no actual effort.

People tell me to take better care of myself, to eat more, that they can see my bones and it’s gross. Gross. I hear that word a lot. Or you’re so “disgustingly” skinny. Disgusting. Nice.

The only thing I’m doing differently is stopping my exercise, and I become gross to people.

Long story short, I can shove cake and pizza down my pie hole all day. I do eat burgers, regularly. I eat all the food. All of it. I’m NATURALLY thin. It’s just the way I am. Being naturally thin and having no control over your weight is the same as being naturally overweight and feeling like you have no control of it. Every person’s body is different.

Giving Angelia a burger won’t make her heavier. And using what her body looked like 20 years ago as a reference doesn’t work either. People’s metabolisms can change. And as we age, women lose a lot of muscle mass. I am 31, and I can’t build the muscle up like I used to. The result is I’m thinner than I was in my teens.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

      @Maya …

I, for one, certainly ‘hope’ we don’t get the same comments about Angelina Pitt (nee Jolie) since Amal Clooney has gotten a HUGE ‘she’s too skinny’ AND ‘she’s gotten a veiny hands/arms pass for being even thinner and even more veiny than Angie. Yet not ‘one’ comment (except for mine) has been made about how Amal brings the skinny and veiny. Don’t get me wrong. I think Amal looks happy and healthy and I think Angie looks happy and healthy. I just don’t see why one gets rave remarks and the other negative remarks for the exact same body type. No need for anyone to ‘riddle me this,’ because I already know the answer.

And for all of you nay-sayers … don’t make me post the ‘proof’ pictures, because you know I will. 🙂

  2. SkinnyFatHunnam says:

angelina needs to lighten up. She didn’t make the greatest movie ever made.

    • Maya says:

Umm – where does she say or even act like she has made the greatest movie ever?

      Seriously clutching at straws here.

    • Charlie says:

I kinda agree. Not just for Angliena, but I don’t like the over-gushing and self-congratulatory speeches that are so common in Hollywood. That’s why I can’t watch rountables before award shows, they all seem so full of themselves.

And to be honest, from the trailer Unbroken seems like your typical inspiring Yay America! WW2 movie. It’s okay, but it’s no Schindler’s List. I hope I’ll be proven wrong.

From the interviews I’ve seen with Jack, he seems like a nice guy, but he takes himself very seriously. I think he said he wants to be the best actor in his generation, and to me that always sounds pretentious. It’s good to have ambitions, but keep them to yourself.

      • BNA FAN says:

People make movies to make money. In order to make money the directors, movie stars Ect are going to say nice things about their movies in order for the public to go see their movies. I don’t believe anyone would invest tens of millions of dollars and would not do everything possible to make their money back with a profit. It’s common sense. I going to support Angelina by going to her movies because I’m a big fan of Brad and Angelina and I know they always give back to the less fortunate.

      • Charlie says:

I’m not saying they should trash their movie, of course not. But the language they use, the way they talk, they make it seem like they’re curing cancer.

      • Katherine says:

” . . . seems like your typical inspiring Yay America! WW2 movie. It’s okay, but it’s no Schindler’s List”

Um, whose side were you on? In fact it may be like Schindler’s list. This is about Japanese prisoner of war camps. The Nazis had very little over the Japanese when it came to inhumane treatment. I was reading a WW2 site the other day and IIRC Japanese prisoners of war died to the tune of something like 30% while German prisoners of war had a 1.1% mortality rate. My figures may be slightly off but there was a huge disparity and that tells you a lot. I think this movie will not pull too many punches about the reality of this man’s war which speaks to the reality of all POWs in the Pacific Theater.

I thought Jolie’s speech which was confined to praise for the honoree, Jack O’Connell, was most appropriate and a wonderful introduction for him to the community. The praise was not about her film but about him. The highlight clips were very well done (for everyone, not just O’Connell) which is usually not the case with the Oscars which IMO inexplicably picks some of the worst moments in a film.

      • Charlie says:

“Um, whose side were you on? ” I don’t understand this question.
I’m not saying the topic of the movie is typical, but the delivery seems typical. It’s an important topic to show. The HBO miniseries The Pacific is one of my all time favourites.

I am from Europe, and 2 of my grandgrandfathers were in German camps ( one died there, the other died of typhus shortly after. ) All 4 of my grandparents were orphans because of WW2. But of course that won’t be in a movie, because if you ask Hollywood, WW2 in Europe was only fought in Western Europe, and maybe they’ll show Russia or Poland once in a blue moon. Interestingly, the Yugoslav Partisans were Europe’s most effective anti-Nazi resistance movement.

      • Nick says:

        @Charlie

I agree with what you’re saying. Everything about this feels to self-congratulatory.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Charlie … because I think you missed it before …

Well said, Katherine … and true. 🙂

      • Ennie says:

It would be more similar to the Schindler’s list than most of other “typical” WWII stories because it is real, this really happened to this man.
This is what drives me the most to see it.

I think lots of movies and escape movies have been made about WWII, including drama, and even comedy (Paul Newman’s “the secret war of Harry Frigg”, for example), but there are not as many remarkable ones about the Pacific theater as the European war. I recall From Here to Eternity or Empire of the Sun.

This is a real story about a remarkable man. I would go see it even it it was the 10,000th movie about it. I prefer to watch a biopic than other war movies, even Fury or Band of Brothers, which I have not seen. Seeing the “triumph of the will” but applied to a man on the other side of the war, fighting to overcome what was brought upon him, is inspiring, IMO.
Sad about what happened to your family. Sadly in wars everyone loses, but usually the civilians lose so much.

      • mayamae says:

@Katherine, Schindler’s List wasn’t about POWs, it was about concentration camps. Therefore, comparing POW statistics is moot. But if we’re comparing death rates, concentration camps ran close to 100%. I’m not comfortable painting the Germans as more humane. Both were horrific. Do a quick Wikipedia search of Andersonville, and see how Americans treated American POWs. About a 30% death rate, and walking skeletons commonly seen in concentration camp footage.

      • Katherine says:

Charlie, there have been hundreds and hundreds of movies about WW2 made by countries all over the world in the decade following the war up to the orrsent. They almost all tell their story from their own country’s involvement in the war. Doesn’t that make sense? It seems quite logical that “Hollywood” would tell American tales though Unbroken also tells the story of Japanese POWs from other countries as well as the US. When Clint Eastwood made a movie from the Japanese side, Letters from Iwo Jima he got a lot of flak over it. Probably why he decided to release it practically in tandem with Flag of Our Fathers.

If you are interested in WW2 stories from another country’s vantage then I assure you that you’ll find them. But, in fact, I have seen American and UK films that include the contributions of other countries and factions which fought in the war.

      • Katherine says:

        mayamae says:
“@Katherine, Schindler’s List wasn’t about POWs, it was about concentration camps. Therefore, comparing POW statistics is moot.”

Someone else raised Schindler’s List and I pointed out that they are both about inhumane treatment by Axis powers during WW2 so their themes are similar. Plus they are both reality based.

My stats were used to illustrate the conditions Japanese POWs endured and the death rates reflect that. It serves no purpose IMO to suggest you can’t compare inhumanity and its victims’ response to it even when there may be some differences. The story of Zamperini is the story of a man who survived inhumane treatment which could easily be similar to the story of a concentration camp survivor. In any event we’re not talking about the systemic murder of an entire people when we are talking about POW camps. However, the Japanese treated some peoples almost as horrifically as the Germans treated the Jews. The Japanese had their own ideas about genocide and peoples they wanted to wipe out.

I still don’t even get what your issue with my post is.

    • serena says:

Did you already see Unbroken to speak like that? And even if that wasn’t the case, what’s wrong in being proud of her own work?

    • Katherine says:

Same old same old from SkinnyFatHunnam. The Internet has heard your broken record.

She looks fine and very elegant. Why is it ALWAYS something. “Thin” is her normal body and that’s all there is to it. No one is suggesting this is a SAG-like, Osar-like competition. It is more of a showcase for the upcoming contenders. and that’s pretty much what it did. This is how awards campaigning is done – just like all those wannabes at the Governors Awards. It really isn’t all that much different than promotion for your movie but they throw in an award. They did a pretty good job of precursing the awards season to come. And if some of those people don’t get the ultimate award by season’s end at least they were recognized publicly for good work.

And don’t think that there are any movies that haven’t been seen by those who need to see them. Unbroken has certainly had select screenings over the past months.

    • Stacey says:

She just really wants that best director Oscar.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I wouldn’t say she doesn’t want it–but it’s not like she won the award. She was presenting it to someone whose Hollywood debut is geared to be rather high profile.

      • Ennie says:

        doesn’t every director?

  3. Sal says:

Oh my gosh, she looks so beautiful!

  4. hilda says:

    She doesn’t look good

    • Charlie says:

All women Brad dates lose a lot of weight when they’re with him. Might just be a coincidence.

    • Janet says:

      Probably jet-lagged.

    • bns says:

Yup, but she’s a sacred cow on this site and admitting that she looks like shit makes you a “body shamer”.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Why the vitriol? I understand you’re not a fan and think she looks bad, but the aggressive tone of your comment seems unneccesary.

Love Jack O’Connell, Cook in Skins was my main crush as a teenager! He’s a great actor too.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I found the whole thing sort of awkward. Angelina’s reception by the audience was extremely lukewarm, and she seemed nervous, twisting her hands over and over. He was cute in the audience, but sort of lumpish on stage, and the audience was polite but not at all engaged. Maybe they’re just tired of award shows. I’m looking forward to the movie, but certainly not because of this.

    • Greata says:

I agree, but I thought the whole event seemed disjointed, and most people in the audience seemed to not be paying close attention to what was happening on stage. Reese, and Julianne seemed to have gotten the warmest responses.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, I watched a few more of the clips and you’re right. I think they’re just over it. I can’t blame them.

    • mom2two says:

His styling was awful. I am surprised he was not cast as a Hobbit…he has the right look for it. I am sure when his styling is good, he’s adorable and I hear good things about his talent but the “I just got out of bed look” works for a few men and he is not one of them. I think she has striking features but I wish she would wear another color besides black…she has the features where most colors would look fabulous on her.

    • mayamae says:

I thought she was really nervous and found it endearing. She may have been worried about becoming emotional when speaking of Louis. I think she’s much more confident with public speaking in her humanitarian role.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That could be. It’s hard for me to imagine someone so lovely being nervous about public speaking, but I guess that really has nothing to do with it.

  6. celine says:

She looks amazing. I think he is adorable. But can’t wait to see Mr & Mrs Pitt together.

  7. Bex says:

I think actually he’s English. He has a Derby accent, that’s slap bang in the middle of the UK.
Also I don’t think I’m thin shaming if I express that I am shocked by how thin Angelina is.

  8. minx says:

    He’s a charmer.

  9. Amcn says:

She looks wiped out. I imagine it is the travelling and jetlag. And very thin but she has always looked thin and will continue to look thin no matter how much we all discuss it. She is just very thin.

But very beautiful and the gown was perfect on her. Versace should custom make all her clothing.

  10. Bria says:

I have been a fan of Jacks’ since Skins (UK version)…the Cook episodes were some of the most emotional and more powerful episodes, epsicially the 2 part episode when they revived the series for one season. Eden Lake is one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen because it felt so real, as if it could happen in real life. The relationship between Jack and Angelina seems so sweet, like a friendship you know will last a lifetime

    • Artemis says:

      I’M COOK! 😉

    • Anthea says:

He was great in Skins. It’s really hard to not think of him as being exactly like that character in real life because he was so convincing as him. But I heard him in a Radio 4 play and he was excellent in that too; radio is often a great indication of how talented an actor is.

  11. Backwards says:

I saw the trailer for this film when I went and saw Pride (guys, run out and see this film…it is fantastic). This actually looks damn good. This trailer plays like a full TV promo, but it’s effective. I’m hooked, I want to see it.

  12. Meandyou says:

Ok. I love herbut she doesn’t look good here. Tired, thin, older. She needs a vacation.

    • **sighs** says:

She needs more color in her face. Her makeup was doing her no favors.

      • minx says:

Yeah, that was the problem, that and the black dress and pulled back hair. If she had brighter makeup, a jewel toned dress and different hair she would have looked more rested. She was obviously a little tired, who wouldn’t be with all her commitments?

      • Katherine says:

Yea, minx, I was thinking the same thing when I saw Bennett Miller. At least Jean-Marc Vallee lightened it up with his gray jacket. 😉

Kristen Stewart looked perfect with a fun and appropriately youthful look. Absolutely adorable.

      • lucy2 says:

I kind of liked the dress, but her makeup looks pretty bad here.

  13. Vvvoid says:

She looks like she’s 60 years old. Dear god. I too skip meals when I am under a lot of stress, I get so frail looking, and I’m afraid this is what happens to me when I get older.

  14. Santolina says:

Hoo, yeah! Next to him everybody looks old and tired. Love his talent, energy and humility.

  15. AustenGirl says:

I loved the way Angelina described his audition! She was very articulate and seems very sensitive to the human condition in the way she described how the actors felt in the cell. She just seems so authentic, which is rare to encounter in life, but especially in her industry. We are the same age, and I’m so inspired by all she has done.

  16. anna says:

“Two years ago, Quentin Tarantino sheepishly walked onto the stage of the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s ballroom to collect a Hollywood Film Awards screenplay prize for his gonzo western “Django Unchained.”
The movie wouldn’t arrive in theaters for nine more weeks.
“It’s strange to get an award while I’m still in the editing room,” Tarantino said. Even so, he thought that the honor could prove helpful in winning arguments with his editor. “I’ll be able to say, ‘Hey, you want to take a line out of my award-winning screenplay?’ ”
The Hollywood Film Awards have long enjoyed a wink-wink relationship with movie studios and A-list talent. Honors have often been given to movies sight-unseen. And the selection process could be charitably described as “vague,” with the primary criteria being the winners’ promise to attend the ceremony.”

  17. serena says:

Reading all the comments above.. about how she looks tired, too thin, old and all that I just wanna say one thing: she needs a different make up artist, and that’s all. Other than that I think she’s her usual gorgeous self. So stop it.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see Unbroken!
And yeah she seemed so nervous, twitching her hands and such, but I find that really cute.

  18. Hissyfit says:

She looks bad on the photos posted here but she was the most beautiful woman who walked the stage last night. Her face, it looked so gorgeous on tv!

She was one of the few presenters who looked normal last night. Most of them looked high and sound drunk. Depp’s presentation was the most awkward.

    • truthSF says:

Depp was straight up drunk/high. Did you see how he was acting when he was standing on stage in the background, so embarrassing.

  19. Luly says:

All I can see is his bulge in the last photo

  20. Etw says:

There is a big difference between naturally thin and severely underweight and unhealthy. She does not have a healthy BMI. This is not “thin shaming”, it is taking notice that there is something very wrong. There is extreme, unhealthy behavior occurring, not an occasional “skipped meal”. If we ignore it and do not comment on it, we are encouraging eating disorders and other dangerous behavior necessary to achieve this.

  21. Carol says:

I think part of what makes Angelina beautiful is her hair so I don’t think this style flatters her at all. I think it makes her face look tight and too thin. Her makeup didn’t help either; she needs a darker lipstick.

  22. Jessica says:

I really think it’s her makeup. Plus, she’s probably exhausted. The family just left Malta and soon she will be in Australia for the Unbroken premiere. I do think she would look better with about 20lbs. I would love her get back to her weight in MAMS but I do realize she’s older and kids do change your body. I do hate when people think her Tomb Raider body was her actually body size. She worked like a dog to look that way, which her natural weight.

I am very excited to see this film. Jack looks amazing in it.

  23. kri says:

AJ’s weight/health has been speculated on for a long time now. I think she does look tired, but she works alot. As for body-shaming, I don’t do that (except for Kardashians, and since their bodies contain less than 10% actual human parts, I don’t feel bad) but AJ is very thin here. I always get concerned that she is ill or something. I hope not-I admire her very much and her work is inspiring.

    • Ennie says:

HAHAHA I also think that the KArdashians is a whole different game, that and any celebrity that over botoxes, over plucks, over injects etc. I know is a bit mean, but many of them just go overboard, like that youngest Kardashian (jenner?) with her lips. It really pains me that the illiterate model one just got a contract with Estee Lauder.
I really doubt she will buy an education with those millions!

  24. lower-case deb says:

    Jackyboyyyy!

  25. Kayla says:

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Jack O’Connell’s since his days on Skins UK. He’s very talented and super adorable. He does look better with shorter hair and without that facial hair though.

    • Ctkat1 says:

Me too! You should see him in “Starred Up”- it’s a brutal film (about a young guy who gets transferred from juvie to adult prison), and he’s so, so, so amazing in it. He’s very different from the new crop of pretty-and-sensitive-high-class young British actors so I’m not sure what his place will be in Hollywood, but the talent is definitely there.

  26. zut alors! says:

Angelina did not look at all well last night. I was watching the show and was disturbed by her appearance. Her cheeks were sunken in and she had black circles under her eyes that even makeup could not conceal. I hope she is alright, but there is clearly something seriously wrong. And yes, the audience reception was very lukewarm. I wonder if Gerard Butler looked at her and wondered what hapoened to the vivacious and healthy woman with whom he made a movie. I am a fan of this woman and this is so sad to see.

  27. Hissyfit says:

Lmao! “She’s not healthy at all”, “she looks ill”, “she doesn’t have healthy bmi”. Thank you for your physical and medical assesment Internet doctors. Jolie has been internet diagnosed “ill” because of her thin – ness for over a decade. I’m sure she would’ve passed away a long time ago if she was really “ill”. She’s thin, big deal. A lot of celebrities out there are as thin as her but they don’t get much flack and they are not being called ill or unhealthy just because they are not Jolie.

    • Artemis says:

Saying she looks ill is not exactly an assessment. And she clearly doesn’t have a healthy BMI for her height but BMI is a crock of shit anyway.

I personally think she’s healthy, she’s too busy not to be. Her problem here is probably a combination of lack of sleep (because BUSY) , not giving a crap, age and bad make-up. Like, it’s not hard to hide bags under one’s eyes. Even an icecube could do wonders. In the past, she had more face fat (her father’s cheeks) but as she ages, that last bit of fat is going away.

The woman is aging and her low body fat will her do no favours in that department. It’s the reason why so many celebs who want that youthful look have fillers because nobody wants to eat for it. Jolie is probably having something done but extremely subtle because her aging process is more natural than her peers.

  28. Amy says:

She looks unwell in these photos. Not because of her weight compared to “average” people, but her face looks unusually gaunt compared to how I’ve seen her look recently. And the color in her face doesn’t look good.

  29. funny says:

I’ve been an Angelina fan since Hackers …almost 20 years. EVERY SINGLE ONE of those years, there have been people who insist that she is way too thin and sick, and in some cases they say she will die very soon. Regardless of these CONSTANT body shamers, Angie still lives, and lives quite fully…she has an very active family, a thriving career, does a ton of charity work, flies planes, makes wine, designs jewelry, writes books, etc., and those are only some of the things we know about, all while being kind to everyone- a rarity in Hollywood.

I would venture to say that she weighs about the same she did in highschool, if not a few pounds more. Except for her pregnancies, her weight has probably not varied by 5-10 lbs since highschool. She has made to almost 40 and done a lot of amazing, admirable, and rigorous activities throughout these past four decades and yet, there are those who insist she is ill- more people should be so ill and the world would be a much better place. Twenty years and I have yet to see this fat Angelina the body shamers keep referencing. Even when she was pregnant, people mocked her skinny arms & legs and said the babies would be damaged because she is so skinny. Quite frankly, only Brad needs to love that body and clearly he does…Hollywood seems to love it enough to keep paying her millions, so she is in far better shape than most.

  30. BlueeJay says:

Why is it that all the women Brad has been with are always at their thinnest when they are with him? Like I mean really thin. He must be into that and they must do it to please him. So weird. And by the way it is not body shaming to say someone looks awful and to thin. We try to help anorexics all the time by telling them they are too thin. There is no doubt in my mind that Angie is anorexic.

    • Ennie says:

mmmh? Are you telling this to AJ directly?
I know for a fact very very slim men and women, bony, skinny I dare say, who are absolutely health, strong and wiry. A bony uncle of mine could go squat jumping up and down the block at over 70 years old! People would laugh about my female friend because of her looks and she feels forced to wear long full skirts to hide her legs because of people…well, like you. It is sad. She has always been pointed at because of her body type.

I would say that in this site when a heavier female is pictured, there are less negative comments that whenever Angelina Jolie appears to be slightly under her regular weight. These threads, with these type of comments are not pro positive at all, even when saying that is genuine worry about her. It reminds me of those sites where they are worrying about the JP children, if they had this or that, criticizing everything and the posters justifying that they are worried about them while trashing the parents.

I am a fan, I know she is always thin or a bit thinner, she has her ups and downs, she has not been always the exact weight, she fluctuates, but her arms and her legs under the knees have ALWAYS be the tinniest part of her.

Every time her slim arms are on display here come the comments. She could easily hide them, but she doesn’t. I accept that her face looks thin, but in a few weeks or month she will look fuller, it is always the same. She is a hard working woman, who has a hard time gaining weight.

    • Jessica says:

@Blueejay I agree that she’s too thin but until I see your medical license and your diagnosis of her being anorexic, then you can’t say she’s anorexic, because at this point it’s only an assumption. If you follow these threads, it’s always the same posters that make the same type of comments.

    • Maya says:

@Blue: again you are making assumptions about someone you have never ever met.

First you vehemently declared that Brad & Angelina are bad parents simply because they actually have a career. And that because they are rich they are not good parents.

Now you have the audacity to say Angelina is anorexic. You dont know her nor do you know her medical or any other situation she might go through.

You seem to be a very irrational person who makes bad assumptions about this couple simply because you hate them.

  31. lisa2 says:

The Jack picture threw me off. I had to click to see that it was in fact about Angie.. So people got a chance today to talk about her being skinny.

well glad to see the usual is well in place.

  32. Kim1 says:

Angelina was thin in 2003 before she met Brad whose fault was that?Angelina is exhausted she is working on two feature films which she directed, she has six kids and she has her charity work.
    Yes she is underweight .
I find it baffling that I never read all these comments about BMI’s ,eating disorders, health when it comes to OVERweight celebs. Why?

    • Yeah, I don’t get the ‘Brad likes them skinny’ i.e. they lose weight because of Brad. Does anyone ever say that Goop stays skinny for Chris Martin? No. Jennifer–she had well documented issues with her mother about her looks and weight, and I believe talked about how a tv producer called her fat (on some pilot before she did Friends, or maybe even during Friends)….and wasn’t there a rumor that she and Courteney had a competition to see who could lose the most weight on the set? And then there’s Angelina–who’s been a bobble head her entire adult life. The only difference between her now, and her ten years ago is that her face is thinned out. And in these pictures, her body/torso looks thick, while her arms and shoulders are thin. I think she looks stiff and tired, but good.

Also–when has Brad ever given any indication that he’s after his women with a scale? Remember when that PEOPLE article with Ashton Kutcher–where it said that he didn’t judge Mila’s pregnant body….Angelina has said time and time again that she feels sexy because of Brad when she’s pregnant. So unless someone can give me something legit as to why they think that Brad a body shamer, can we please stop saying it? Jennifer and Goop are/were two women who had serious health/body issues.

  33. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Wow, the audience seemed so bored up until they had to do something i.e. clap. Which I identify with, because I really hate listening to speeches.

And I agree–Jack O’Connell is so freaking adorable. And naughty. God, I want to see more of it.

And I do think Angelina looks exhausted–I saw that BP was in Seoul promoting Fury, so I wonder if it’s jet lag. Her makeup is terrible because she is exhausted and doesn’t help ‘wake her up’–but if she’d been well rested I would’ve liked it better. I guess I don’t see how she’s lost any weight? It has to be super obvious to me, and the only change I’ve ever noticed with AJ is that her face got thinner starting from 2009/10….other than that I think she looks pretty much the same. She’s always been a twig to me.

  34. maddelina says:

Love the dress esp the pleating in the back. She looks severe to me. Jack is adorable. Love his accent!

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I think she should’ve worn some jewel colored (LARGE) stones/earrings with the dress. Then it would’ve popped out more–like at the 2009 Oscars when she wore a simple black dress and those beautiful emerald earrings and ring. Or maybe worn some gold jewelry. But maybe she didn’t want to stand out too much because it was Jack’s night.

  35. Stacey says:

Angelina Jolie is desperate for that best director Oscar.

    • k says:

oh say, stacey, could you maybe post that for a third time? you know, in case your point hasn’t been made already? yeah. thanks.

    • Maya says:

Do you say that to Christopher Nolan, David Fincher or any other male directors?

They have been campaigning the shit out of their movies for weeks now but when Angelina , a female director, just started to campaign her movie – she is called desperate.

    • norah says:

so it is ok when a man wants an oscar for best actor or best director etc but when a woman esp angelina jolie who is the rare breed of women director in hw wants to do her best and is ambitious enough to perhaps do well for herself that is a problem? really. first her physical appearance is not good – she is too thin etc and now because she has directed a movie that she believes in and wants to do well that is also a problem? what is wrong with wanting an oscar?

    • Louise177 says:

Too funny to call Angelina desperate for Oscar when she’s attending an awards ceremony where dozens of other actors, directors, etc are in attendance. Why is Angelina desperate but not all of the others who attended?

      • norah says:

because it is once again a double standard for angelina and brad – everyone else who wants an oscar is ok but aj and bp are “desperate” ? really.

      • Brianna says:

There is no reasoning with the haters, its like all of their reasoning and common sense goes out the window when they come onto a JP thread.

  36. nickeldime says:

Gah! Cook from Skins. He was brilliant even back then. It’s nice to see him here with Angelina

  37. smcollins says:

Angelina looks gorgeous as usual, but dammit, she needs to gain some weight! I’m not body shaming, I’m concerned. If you look back at her younger days she was lean, but still had a voluptuousness to her. I realize she’s older and that her body’s been through a lot (pregnancies, cancer scare…), but her being that thin just doesn’t seem healthy. Still a beautiful woman, though.

  38. Lena says:

Ga! She looked deathly ill to me on screen. Given her family history it could very well be something serious. I guess she thought it really really important to campaign for an Oscar to do it while not feeling well.

    • BNA FAN says:

You are here pretending to be concerned for Angelina health is such a crock of you know what. Angelina is naturally slim with long lean legs and arms, that’s the way her body is. Lena, have you ever seen anyone “deadly I’ll”? I wish you would visit a nursing home or a hospital before saying she looked “deadly I’ll”, that’s so disrespectful. Believe me Angelina does not look deadly I’ll. She looks tired because she has been working hard making a movie that was just wrapped about a week ago, in between that she got married and was flying between several countries. Angelina is also the mother of six children with a husband. She was just in London a few months ago getting honored by the queen of England. AJ is also getting her movie Unbroken ready for release in about five weeks. With all
she has going on I’m surprised she was looking so good last night. She does look tired and her makeup was not the best but she looked beautiful considering all she has going on.. To be honest, I don’t know how she keep up with all that’s on her plate.

    • norah says:

      lena
there is something called throwing shade at aj. on one hand u are concerned abt aj’s health then the next u say that she is busy campaigning for an oscar? she has been trying to do things for the last 2 years non stop – acting directing etc and what is the problem with being ambitious – if a man wants an oscar he is ambitious but when aj is showing off her movie that is a problem? really – perhaps we sd be happy that the movie is almost here and all her hard work is done – what the result of the movie will be nobody knows yet but she has tried her best and u sd at least give her some credit for that

  39. smn1985 says:

Unbroken was one of the best books I’ve ever read in my life. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it. Louis Zamperini led such an incredible life and the amount of obstacles he overcame in his life and during the war is astounding. The fact that one man’s biography could be so captivating blows my mind. I really hope Angie’s movie does his life justice–from what I can tell, she found him as remarkable as I did, so I’m sure she did her best.

  40. delighted says:

Angelina looks mighty healthy to me. Here is a woman that never slows down. She is at the top of the top and looking beautiful. A very busy lady. She likes being thin. Its her “fighting weight”. She feels most comfortable and energetic at this weight. I applaud her vigor, vitality and willingness to fight the good fight. Thin works for her and it works for me. This constant focus on her weight and the criticism of the thin, must be why she prefers living in France. The women are much thinner there. All Americans look fat and oversized when compared with French women.

    • TheGhostofMischaBartan'sCareer says:

Well aren’t you delightful *rolls eyes*

    • Artemis says:

She prefers France because it’s a better location for her UN work. That’s coming from the Dame herself. I don’t know why Jolie, who has been thin her entire life, would suddenly decide to relocate from the US to France just for her weight. That sounds insane.

  41. Kali says:

It’s been mentioned a bit further up the thread but if anyone is wondering where the heck this Jack O’Connell guy came from, watch “Starred Up”. I would honestly put it at the same level as Russell Crowe in “Romper Stomper” and Eric Bana in “Chopper”.

I love the fact that he’s wearing a patterned suit! Dude looks good. I don’t know if it’s just me though but I think he looks a bit like Garrett Hedlund, especially with that facial scruff.

  42. rudy says:

Angie looks stunning as usual. Who cares about bags under the eyes!! Maybe she just doesn’t like to coat her face with makeup. She is skinny, she has ALWAYS been fairly skinny, particularly after giving birth.

She has 6 kids, a rather full life, travels constantly. I would never expect her to look perfect. She also had a mastectomy not too long ago. This is not someone who lives to eat. And I imagine she has a very fast metabolism.

I for one don’t like barbie dolls. I don’t care if these gorgeous woman have hair under their armpits or stains on their clothes. Who cares. Angelina Jolie is an inspiration to me. She lives a very full life and is able to accomplish so much. If I clean the kitchen, do the laundry, and go to work, that is enough for me for one day. It doesn’t matter if Angie has a slew of helpers. I bet she still is on the go constantly. If there were no bags under her eyes, I would be surprised.

  43. LeAnn Stiinks says:

I know I am going to get flamed for saying this, but I think Angelina looked awful. When I saw her in 3D on TV, my jaw dropped. Her body does NOT look healthy and her head looked huge upon said body.

She looked great when she did “Tomb Raider,” this is scary.

    • Ennie says:

She used padding on her chest and hips to convey the Lara Croft look, too, on top on gaining weight. She is just thin, but everyone references those movies. SMH

  44. Leslie says:

My first reaction to these pictures is that she is not well. Has she been ill recently? This is just from looking at her face.

  45. Kt hatuh says:

I’m not a big Angie fan, but I don’t think she’s anorexic. She’s been this thin for far too long. If she were “anorexic” she’d be dead by now. Does she look a little like a bobble head? Yes. But I still don’t think she’s too thin.

Also, I’m probably alone in this sentiment (at least in this forum) but I think she’s one of those women who sometimes look completely AMAZING, flawless, etc. and other times she’s just kinda “meh”. Anybody? She has a humongous forehead, and a very odd profile.

  46. Ctkat1 says:

I get why they decided to televise it (money!), but it certainly didn’t seem like much fun, did it? The Globes are ridiculous, but they’re a lot of fun to attend and watch. The Oscars are boring (mostly), but they mean something. This award…it’s got the lack of authenticity of the Globes (in that the head of the Hollywood Film Awards refuses to disclose who the voting body is, in order to “protect their privacy” and there are no nominees), and the lack of fun of the Oscars…so why bother watching? The awards don’t mean anything much in the wider award season, and it isn’t fun.

    • norah says:

this was the first time it was televised and it did really badly in the ratings – everyone already knew who the winners were etc – seemed really boring

    • Katherine says:

It’s not really much different than the AFI awards. Except AFI gets political which i think should never be part of a film’s evaluation.

It’s a show that highlighted the upcoming contenders. I am LMAO over the seriousness some so called pundits and bloggers are taking this with. As if these same people aren’t encouraging and reporting other forms of awards campaigning without the annoying and hypocritical umbrage.

  47. lisa2 says:

If Angie was on her death bed as often as people like to predict and claim she should be in the Genesis Book of World Records.. Since 2006 or earlier.. and over 10 years later she is still here defying all the Gloom and Doom of her about to fall over at any moment.

Some people should just reference the post they make about her every time they see her.. Like @ my post on 10/3/00 or 4/8/13 Because they say the same thing on ever single thread about her.

    • norah says:

strange how pple keep saying how thin she is etc but if compared to amal clooney who is just as thin nobody has anything to comment abt amal – at all. strange isnt it/ ?? wd double standards be applicable i wonder. well last time we checked aj has managed to survive quite well despite all the non stop ‘thin shaming ‘ going on

  48. Janet says:

Jet lag. That’s exactly how I looked when I got off a flight from NY to Kuala Lumpur.

  49. Dany says:

I love the dress, it´s very elegant. Sadly Angelina looks sick… tired, pale and bony.

Jack´s outfit looks like something the male Harry Potter cast would wear 🙂

  50. Caribbean says:

    Ok people,
I guess you all have not seen Michael Bay and see how thin he is.
Angie has great skin, hair, and posture – hardly someone who is sick. Pictures do not do her justice, check out the videos!
It comes back to being THIN when there is nothing else to criticize…
Has she ever broken down and say how exhausted she is, has she ever quit a project, withdrawn from any commitments, stumbled while walking (because she is weak)?
I do not understand the world that people live in when they act as if there is not all kinds of weights around.
Angie was the heaviest when she trained for tomb raider
Can you not point out another STAR THAT GAINED WEIGHT AND MUSCLES for a role and has not looked the same BEFORE or SINCE??????

  51. scout says:

I had tears in my eyes when she was describing the emotions the actor went through in one of the scenes. She said it so eloquently, with such dignity, with so much admiration and respect for that young actor. My respect grew 1000 fold for her. I can’t wait to watch this movie.
She has been working on her new movie in Malta non-stop after her wedding, probably she is really really TIRED, in need of few days off!

  52. Prentitious says:

I saw the shows d thought she seemed uber pretentious. And her actor seemed to be mocking her and the event.

    • delighted says:

Angelina was as usual poised and elegant. She was stunning in her long very conservative gown. And her leading man was cute and adoring and adorable.
