Rupert Friend got engaged to Paralympic sprinter Aimee Mullins: super-cute?

Even with the allure of Rupert Friend, I still haven’t been watching this season of Homeland. I’m not saying I won’t see it eventually! Maybe I’ll binge-watch it over Christmas. So no spoilers, please, but if you are watching, will you tell me if Rupert has a bigger part this season? Obviously, Rupert is probably best known to American audiences for his role in Homeland, where he plays hottie CIA assassin Peter Quinn. Costume-drama fans might know him from his many dramatic roles in England too – you can see his IMDB here. Rupert previously dated Keira Knightley, but for the past few years he’s been with a woman named Aimee Mullins. And they just got engaged! What’s interesting to me is that Aimee is a Paralympic sprinter. She wears prosthetic legs!

Aimee Mullins and Rupert Friend are set to become “Friend”s forever – husband and wife. Though she has not been seen wearing a ring, the athlete-model-actress, 38, and Homeland star, 33, are engaged, PEOPLE confirms. The news was first announced Tuesday at L’Oréal Paris’s Women of Worth awards. Mullins, who introduced one of this year’s honorees, attended the dinner with Friend. The happy revelation came when Mullins took the stage to begin her presentation.

“It was really sweet because Aimee was tight-lipped about it earlier in the night, not wanting to take attention from the honorees,” an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Host L’Oréal “gave her a congratulatory shout-out when calling her up to the stage, which prompted a ton of applause from the audience,” the source says.

Mullins spent the night celebrating with fellow brand ambassadors like Eva Longoria, Diane Keaton and Julianne Moore – and, of course, Friend!

“He was very doting the whole night, pulling out her chair, opening the car door,” the onlooker adds. “They were really adorable, just enjoying the night and each other’s company.”

A rep for Friend’s agent, Kate Buckley, had no comment when asked by PEOPLE to confirm the engagement. Friend, who is also a writer and director, split from actress Keira Knightley in 2011.

Mullins, a double-amputee from childhood who competed as a collegiate and Paralympic sprinter before turning to modeling, has hit the runway for the late Alexander McQueen and later became a spokesperson for L’Oreal. She was named one of PEOPLE’s “Most Beautiful” in 1999.

That’s a nice story, isn’t it? Rupert Friend – one of the cutest guys – ends up with a Paralympic athlete and all-around inspirational woman! Rupert might have more substance than we initially thought.

I’m including some photos of Rupert and Aimee out and about in NYC yesterday. They’re cute together!

Check out her TEDtalks from a few years ago. She seems very cool.

This warms my heart, articles like this always make me warm and fuzzy on the inside.

P.S. To be totally honest, my mind is blown that she is wearing a prosthetic leg, it definitely does not look like it!!

  3. TWINK says:

I kinda think phrasing it like that:”She wears prosthetic legs!” is a little bit insensitive.

    • Jaded says:

How do you phrase it then? She’s a double-amputee? A peg-leg? No discreet way around it and there’s nothing wrong with saying she wears prosthetic legs unless you come up with something like “she’s ambulatory-challenged” or some other P.C. expression.

She’s an inspiration and I doubt very much she’d resent the description of wearing prosthetic legs.

      • TWINK says:

I meant with the exclamation point like “LOOK AT HER!”, I know it wasn’t Kaiser’s intention of course but it just felt wrong to me.

    • Ange says:

It’s probably just admiration, prosthetic legs are super hard work to get around on.

  4. tracking says:

Aw, that’s wonderful. They look lovely together. And, yes, Friend is on Homeland more this season. More Friend, more Saul–this season is amazing, imo far and above the best season yet!

    • QQ says:

Agreed! I wasn’t gonna watch but my gf gave me her Showtime to watch it and I’ve screamed my face off every single ep LOL

also They look so cute together!! she is gorgeous, sorta favors a Surgery free versions of Albert of Monaco’s Prisoner Womb

This season has rocked my socks off. I want Carrie and Quinn to bang it out, though. THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

      • QQ says:

I don’t, i hate everything about Carrie ( not that it doesn’t make for a great character unlikeable or not) and find it super ridiculously hard to believe this shrill ass hard, mess of a chick has all these guys tripping over her, also I find it Lazy, like why do they need to tangle o? why does she need a dude puppy eyed trailing her? which she gotta be half a season dickmatized? (Not Now but you get what I mean)

      • Carlye says:

Oh, QQ, TOTALLY agree. Carrie is a hot mess and all these men fall in crazy love with her. Why??? One thing that puzzles me – the beautiful little baby she seems afraid to go near – how did they pull that off, she looks EXACTLY like Brody, In fact, I call her little Brodina.

    • Katenotkatie says:

Oh he is so delicious. I am so ready for the Carrie-Quinn big bang. It’s going to be so hot. This season is definitely benefitting from a lack of Brody and family, but each episode is still so intense that I have to take a break in between to get my heart rate back to normal.

Congrats to the couple, they seem lovely together!

      • Really says:

Agree! I never got into this show before even though hubby watched every week, I found Brody angle hard to keep up with and Carrie a nut job. But Quinn! Now I love that man. Part of me knows the Carrie/Quinn bang is inevitable but other part of me says she will ruin him.
Much more Quinn this season. Can’t wait to see this week what happens!!

  5. witingbit says:

watching homeland in real time and quinn is all kinds of delicious and basically the best this season!

  6. almondey24 says:

    love me some peter quinn!

  7. Val says:

This is awesome!!! Much happiness to them both.

  8. Maude says:

I would definitely encourage you to give Homeland another shot. This has been an excellent season – FAR more of Friend’s character, and in a good way. I really think they’re doing great work with the show.

  9. Kitten says:

Wow! He’s super-sexy and although I’m somewhat sad to see him off the market, I’m glad he married such a talented woman.

  10. Cruxcurio says:

    Cheerful stuff 🙂

  11. Lilacflowers says:

    Good for them!

Rupert in “Cherie” with Michelle Pfeiffer and “Young Victoria” with Emily Blunt.

  12. Brin says:

    Congrats, happy for them!!

  13. Cody says:

Its guys like Rupert who separate the men from the boys. I have seen Kate in an interview and she is awesome. Rupert is a lucky guy..

  14. Florence says:

Lovely story. Rupert also seems to be a man of substance, she is older than him as well as the disability (not that that’s an issue but I can’t see your average actor guy choosing someone like that instead of picking a Victoria’s Secret model type)

She is lovely, very pretty and they make a good looking couple. Wish them all the best for their future

  15. Louisa says:

You MUST watch this season of Homeland! I almost gave up after the last one but so glad I didn’t. It’s up there with the first one. And no Brody family (hooray!)

  16. PrincessMe says:

I’m such an idiot sometimes. I was looking at her feet (but not closely enough it seems) in that top picture, and for a second there it looked like she only had one foot. I was perplexed for a second there (almost to the point of freaking out) wondering if she was hobbling around on one foot (in heels, no less).
    Like I said, idiot. *sigh*

  17. Tig says:

Congrats to them! I have loved him in everything I’ve seen him in. Did she ever pose in SI/ESPN magazine?

On a totally frivolous note- hats off to Keira K- she had a great run of BFs!!!

  18. littlestar says:

Congrats to them! And oh man, he is so hot and sooo sexy on Homeland. Love that they are focusing more on Quinn this season and “highlighting” PTSD.

The first 5 episodes of season 4 are slow and I told myself that if it didn’t get better after that, I would stop watching. But then SOMETHING HAPPENS and I was hooked and all I have to say is that the episode from this past weekend… HOLY SHEEEEEEEEEEEET!!! I was skeptical that Homeland could work without the Brody storyline, but this season is superb.

  19. Norman Bates' Mother says:

That’s a very good news – I hope they are happy together. Aimee Mullins seems like a really great and inspiring person and a wonderful example for other amputees. I recently showed her story to my dad who is an amputee and has a hard time believing he is able to live a full-life now. I think it helped him at least a little bit. Other than Aimee there are not many high-profile people with prosthetic limbs who are as amazing or at least not criminals or bat-shit crazy, though. Oscar Pistorius, Heather Mills and Aviva Drescher are not a good representation and other paralympians are wildly ignored bu the media. It’s important to have someone as talented, smart and beautiful inside and out to look up to and here she is – an athlete, businesswoman, model who will marry a man of many women’s dreams.

If you come across this movie, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont,
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421229/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_21
it’s one of RF’s early roles and he is great (delicious looking too)
in it (and he sings!). Warning though, its a sad movie!

    And congrats to the couple!

    • Bored suburbanhousewife says:

Okay late to this party but I love Mrs Palfrey. I don’t understand why Rupert is not the click bait of Hiddleston and Bendy other than that he is a shy and private person of very deep substance. I don’t think he’s been a self promoter and he has many other interests. But he seems a beautiful man inside and out and I would love to see more attention and appreciation for him, these girls don’t know what they are missing. Thank you Kaiser!

By the way, Season 3 of Homeland made me feel like someone was hammering nails through my eyeballs. Season 4 rocks and Rupert is a big reason, hey folks — Peter Quinn likes plus sized women and will bring all his bad assery to fight for them too!

      • peachblush says:

I love that movie too- I cry every time and RF was perfect in it. He has a good signing voice and he plays guitar!!!
Let’s try to get more people to see this movie!

Agree on all your comments about RF!

She famously walked for Alexander McQueen with a set of exquisitely carved legs/boots and opened the show (spring 1999): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP8c-igI3L
