Jack O’Connell on ‘working class’ label: ‘I could almost find those terms offensive’

I still don’t know if you guys are interested in discussing Jack O’Connell separately from Angelina Jolie, but let’s give it a whirl. After diving into several new interviews with Jack, I have to say… I think he should be included in your Hot Bloke List. Granted, he’s not a Tom Hardy and Idris Elba-level Hot Bloke, but Jack is definitely a charming bad boy. Here are some highlights from his Esquire interview:

Whether he likes his “working class kid from Derby” label: “I’m always referred to as a normal Derby lad, et cetera. I could almost find those terms offensive. I can consider myself a normal Derby lad, but there’s a tendency for that to appear like it’s an over-importance. I don’t think my example has been any harder than others who have done this path before me.”

What’s like being directed by Angelina: “She had compassion. She supported me throughout. If I’m watching her treat everyone as an equal, that made me feel exactly like that, too. I spent time with her in the rehearsal period. She set up meetings with my Mum and some of my family. So, by the time we got to the set, it felt like I had a bit of a friend. But it was a massive leap for me, a much more expensive realm of the industry.”

His mum is his manager: “That has its ups and downs. I love my Mum to pieces, but sometimes we have to have serious conversations.”

He was almost a footballer before an injury: “It was going my way for a while. Not to sound big-headed but I was banging them in left, right and centre.”

His juvenile criminal record meant that he couldn’t join the army: “Sometimes I draw from whatever military expectations I had for myself. That idea of discipline and hierarchy. It certainly gets me out of the bed and onto my mark.”

His legacy as an actor/celebrity: “When I was coming up five years ago, I used to open magazines and see actors and it used to make me cringe for them. It threw up the question of being genuine. If I look a muppet in old pictures in clothes I’d never wear nowadays, that’s f–king hilarious to me now, as opposed to embarrassing – as long as I speak definitively enough as an actor by the work I do. I don’t want immortality for myself, but I want to leave a print, my urine scent. Lifting my leg on the tree of history.”

[From Esquire]

I love that his mum is his manager. So hardcore, Jack! And I do think that with the English media outlets especially, actors get locked into these discussions about class. Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston and many more have all had to answer questions about their posh schools and their posh backgrounds, and now Jack is locked into a similar conversation on the other end of the class scale – he’s a working class kid with a criminal record and he’s probably going to have to talk about being working class for the next decade.

Oh, and Jack has an interview in The Guardian too and just the first few paragraphs had me laughing. Jack is the kind of bloke who will tell a mayo stain on his trousers to “f—k off.” Yes, a bloke of the people!! Long live blokes! The Guardian’s reporter also notes that Angelina did “all the background checks” on Jack before she hired him because she was worried about his reputation as a bad boy. He also sort of confirms that he’s dating Cara Delevingne, although that admission was like pulling teeth. He also talks about Angelina’s influence on him and how she got to know all his family and all of that. He seems to care about her immensely. You can read the full Guardian piece here.

“Lifting my leg on the tree of history.”
don’t know why, i find this mucho amusing and will try to slip it into a conversation at least once.

  2. Alicej says:

Loved him ever since he played cook in skins!! He’s dating cara??? Noooooooo!

  3. Ugh, I was hoping that rumor about him and Cara wasn’t true–how juvenile is it to post pictures of your hickey’d neck on instagram? Seriously.

And I guess I can’t really complain about the posh vs. working class/bloke labels….they’re just different words/descriptions in America. But the brits have fancier names for it…haha.

And I like that his mom is his manager—she obviously knows what she’s doing, unlike Heigl’s mother. And/or at least let’s him breathe. I don’t think I’ve seen a picture yet with Heigl just out with her husband and kids, and NOT her mother.

And my boyfriend is so hot. He looks dirty (in a good way).

    • Artemis says:

It was juvenile and begs the question why the fuck he’s so precious about it when he’s being asked?

  4. Sixer says:

I don’t think he is particularly hot but I love him as an actor. I’ll go for intense and instinctive over polish every time. I think he has charisma (acting-wise rather than lust-wise) in spades.

In the good Celebitchy tradition of examining all things Brit through the prism of class, I’ll give you a good adjective for O’Connell: CHIPPY. He is chippy. When asked about class, poshies will tell you all about their great grandfather who was a chimney sweep or that their mother advertised Fairy Liquid (oh, the horror!) to pay the school fees so they’re not really posh at all. Non-poshies will just say F*CK RIGHT OFF WITH ASKING ME ABOUT THIS SH*T, C*NTFACE. That’s chippy. Y’dig?!

I predict O’Connell will follow in the good old Christian Bale tradition of stroppery.

    • Kiddo says:

Ha. Had to look up ‘Chippy’. He looks like he has ‘presence’ in the Unbroken Trailer, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it hot. The top photo on this page is okay, but the second is veering into Mark Wahlberg territory, so NO.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Chippy suits him.

    • j.eyre says:

“F*CK RIGHT OFF WITH ASKING ME ABOUT THIS SH*T, C*NTFACE.”. And that shall be today’s turn of phrase! (I promise not to change any ‘S’s to ‘Z’s. Did you grandmother say this one too?)

The upside it that a will be much easier to incoperate into my conversation with the principal.

    • Sixer says:

My grandmother swore in Welsh, thankee! Iesu mawr! I think you should use the Zs, Miss Jane! Added camp never hurts.

    • MtnRunner says:

@Sixer, thanks for teaching us a new word. I lurv it. Gonna show off my expanding global vocab with that one.

  5. Snazzy says:

I can kind of see his point: it’s part of who he his, versus defining who he is. But that’s hollywood, isn’t it? It’s easier to create definitions for people than to understand that people are the sum of many different experiences that help define them.

    He is cute though 🙂

    • Charlie says:

But the background you come from plays a huge part in your life, especially in Britain. I don’t like when people reject those labels as if they’re not important. They shouldn’t be but they are. Admit it and move on.

Maybe because we have a kind of reverse snobbery going on in my country, but being working class is something you should be proud of ( not that he isn’t, just saying)

  6. Allie says:

I’m so disappointed that he’s dating Cara. I would have thought she wasn’t his type. It makes me sad these bad boys are lusting after these stuck up rich girl (Matt Healy/Taylor Swift too). I’m free, jack!

    • At least he’s young–he’s what? 2 years older than her? It’d be a lot creepier if he was heading towards his thirties and dating someone like her….ugh.

    • Charlie says:

He dated Tulisa Costosomething. He hasn’t exactly the best taste when it comes to women.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

But he dated Kaya Scodelario too (Ceffy forever!) and she’s talented and seems nice and smart. And he loves Angelina! His taste isn’t THAT bad.

Oh and since I have to add this to every post about him: I love him and I hope he has an amazing career!

  7. Ashley says:

I’ve read that he’s very nice and down too earth in person and not too much unlike his skins character. So HONK for more Jack!!

  8. InvaderTak says:

Never seen him in much; watching suggestions that don’t involved Angelina?

  9. j.eyre says:

    Sorry, wrong place

  10. scout says:

I agree with Jack, labeling somebody as “working class” is almost as offensive calling somebody as “ethnic”.
Jack is only 24yrs old, he looks lot older in photos!

  11. Cee says:

Can someone explain to me the differences between classes and what each of them implies? As in – Kate Middleton being referred to being Middle class when she appears to be at least Upper-Middle class. Thank you 🙂

    • What was that says:

      I will have a go!
Kate is borderline middle class as her parents were both in skilled/semi skilled jobs. The definition is often related to the Census of population and the work categories such as unskilled/manual labourer such as factory work
the middle class were in non manual jobs but especially the civil service, that is government type jobs
Upper middle class are considered the professions such as Dr ,solicitor/lawyer who have some qualifications
      The aristocracy are land owners
The advent of more money has muddied the waters ,and education such as the private education of Kate has allowed her to meet people that has pushed her up the social scene.
BBC iplayer if you can get it has a 3 part documentary on the Tatler magazine currently ,which is the upper classes handbook!! And it is quite entertaining
With the demise of factories and industry ,many do not say they are working class whilst others may still say they are
It is interesting what people define themselves as,as opposed to how they are defined by statistics
      Just my thoughts…

      • Cee says:

It’s like when I lived in the US, people would be obsessed in trying to classify others into racial/ethnic boxes. The same would apply to the UK with class (perhaps the word obsess is too strong).
I’m surprised someone like Benedict Cumberbatch would be considered posh seeing how his parents are actors.
I wonder where businessmen/women stand, though. Money definitely makes things more complicated.

        Thank you!

  12. Gilmore says:

Jack the lad! I’m really into this kid, he’s very charismatic and charming. Just stay away from Cara Delevingne, it kinda ruins my boner for him.

  13. JoJo says:

Love him! See Starred Up – he’s ridiculously awesome.
