Amy Winehouse charged with assault

Even though Amy Winehouse seems to have cleaned herself up and revived the beehive after a lengthy stay in the Caribbean, her old troubles are starting to catch up with her. The singer is facing assault charges stemming from an incident last September in which she punched a female dancer in the eye at the End of Summer Ball in the UK. Of course, this isn’t the first time Amy’s been involved in a physical altercation, but it is the first time she’s been brought up on charges for it. If you recall, this was the incident in which Amy’s young god-daughter made her singing debut at this ball, and Amy showed up wasted out of her mind, embarrassing herself and her god-daughter with whacked out and violent behavior.

So much for a quieter life. Amy Winehouse may have just returned from a sun-kissed Caribbean vacation and moved into a suburban home – but she faces more trouble on the horizon.

The singer, 25, has been charged with assault after an alleged incident in September at the posh End Of Summer Ball in London’s Berkeley Square. She has been ordered to court later this month.

A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police tells PEOPLE, “The singer has been charged. She will appear on bail at City of Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday 17th March charged with common assault.”

The police do not name the person whom Winehouse is alleged to have assaulted, though the spokesman confirms, “It is connection with an incident in Berkeley Square on the 26th September 2008.”

It is understood Winehouse, who has been caught up in scuffles before but never charged with an offense, answered police bail Thursday and was formally arrested and charged.

I hope this latest legal problem doesn’t affect Amy’s recovery – that is, if there’s actually any recovery. Maybe some time in anger management would be a good thing for her. I’m still very skeptical that this new improved Amy is the real deal. Just because she was able to pull herself somewhat together for one day doesn’t mean she’s off drugs. And if the stories of her antics in St. Lucia are to be believed, she’s definitely still hitting the booze pretty hard. She was even involved in an altercation on the airplane home. It’s great that she doesn’t look like a corpse anymore, but underneath the veneer of improved health, there’s still a great deal of emotional and psychological work to be done before Amy is truly on the mend.

Amy Winehouse is shown in a black tank top on the night of the incident and out in a v-neck sweater in London yesterday. Thanks to WENN.com for these photos.

Amy, Amy, Amy….(although I’ve been here before)

I agree, if there has been real progress made with her drug dependency this could put a damper in that. I truly hope that isn’t the case. She looks really cute with the freckles on her nose, though the eyes look glassy. I have a tendency to focus on a persons eyes though, so hopefully I’m just being to anal about the whole thing.

I agree her eyes look awful but at least it looks like she’s in there

I so love Winehouse’s voice and the music. I hope she can beat the demons.

  3. Prissa says:

Are those freckles real? She could be so cute/pretty if she’s just get herself together!!

What a load of crock. She has a bath and puts on makeup..suddenly she looks great and healthy. She is a druggie from Camden. If she is trying to get healthy good luck to her, we should not be supporting her habit. She is probably having a new album out soon anyway. As for the conviction thing.. she can crap in the middle of the road and still get a slap on her wrist.. look at the other deadbeats.. Doherty and Moss!! One law for them [some of them] and one law for normal folks.

  5. Lem says:

is crapping in the middle of the street illegal?

    “Amy’s young god-daughter”

Exactly how mentally f*cked up does a person have to be to choose Wineflask as the god mother of their child?

    Pardon my language, but honestly…

  7. starfish says:

No idea Lern.. but it should be!! ha ha

  8. Baholicious says:

Lem, when did she crap in the street? Are you sure you don’t have her confused with Bjork? She did that on stage once.

  9. Mandy says:

I think Amy Winehouse is kinda like a horse: come up and make any sudden movements, and you’re probably gonna get hurt. Of course, with horses, if you’re walking behind them, you’re supposed to place a hand on their hindquarters so they know you’re there. I don’t think Amy would react very well to everyone grabbing her ass everytime they walked behind her…but now that she’s getting a divorce, she might be desperate.

    those are mary jane eyes…

  11. Codzilla says:

Baho: Bjork crapped on stage?!? For real?

  12. Lem says:

Baho ? starfish said it. Bjork did what? Ew! Are you sure your not confusing her w/ Fregie taking a wash?

  13. Judy says:

I dont think her behavior has anything to do with her drugs. SHe is a jerk and thinks she is some kind of start because people take everything this no talen addict does and sticks it in the papers. She is nothing ! SHe is ugly and filthy and has not class and no talent yet people are going poor amy…
God take her off the front page for a year and she will go away.

  14. Ophelia says:

Ugh, she would look pretty good if she didn’t wear red lipliner with nude lipstick!!!!

  15. Amy Fan says:

Hi, i’m from Uruguay, is a little country in South América and we are enchanted by Amy’s voice, and sad about her troubles. Only I know is she’s a human beeing and deserve not only our compassion, even our respect. At last, she’s her own victim. There are some people here who seems don’t have daughters or sons who have the chance to pass trough similars issues. Hey, at least she give to us a little bet of magic trough her talent. Judy, Buenavissta, Taylor B Have some mercy please!! Or you are the perfect beeings to be so hard to judge the people?

  17. Sakota says:

These celebs are really out of control. Surely no one would object to her getting a sound whipping?

  18. TaylorB says:

    Gus,

I wasn’t being ‘mean’, the woman is talented, she has a fantastic voice, and may be a very nice person, but… she is in fact a drug user and a drunk, and I personally would think as a parent one would consider that fact prior to choosing a god parent for their child. Maybe that makes me ‘mean’ in your eyes, but I certainly wouldn’t want someone who is a drug abuser and a cutter as the person, a ‘godparent’,who should be charged with the religious, spiritual, and personal upbringing of my child in the case of my demise. Perhaps you are fine with that, but I would choose to respectfully disagree.

Granted, to be fair, I am a bit of a nit pickey parent, for instance, I wouldn’t let Michael Jackson babysit my sons, or let OJ, Chris Brown or Hugh Hefner date my daughter… Oops, I guess I was being all ‘mean’ again.
